The only thing the dislike situation has changed as far as Nintendo is concerned is that people on message boards and twitter cannot use the ratio as a way to validate their opinions. The good thing about Arlo is that he's pretty honest about this: He admits in the first few minutes that it's petty to see the dislike ratio and point and laugh at it.

I really like my Mario G&W but really wish I waited for the Zelda one instead.

This is where I see how this move is an anti-bullying tactic. It is in opposition the coliseum mentality of Internet where the masses delight in seeing the Christian ripped apart by the lion.

Imagine a workspace where a manager comes out and says, "Gather round everyone and watch as I rip Donny a new asshole over this report of his." That manager would be considered completely toxic.

By removing the dislike count from public view, the feedback is made, but discreetly. It is an improvement, though maybe a miniscule one in the grand scheme of things.

I wonder what Shin’en is up to. Personally, I haven‘t immensely enjoyed all of their games, but it‘s so impressive to see what they have managed to develop with 3 to 5 people. Extremely efficient.

Speaking of German, I named one of first horses in BOTW Pferdinand. Was I original or is that a common name? It's a pretty obvious one so someone has to have thought of it before.

I don‘t think Pferdinand is (very) common and I agree it‘s pretty good. 😄

Nothing like going to work and getting an angry mail (plus a call to your boss) by the town mayor about one of your articles they got to read in its entirety before it was published.

Didn't the blue puppet used to be really upbeat? The video game YouTuber pipeline!

Yep. I'm a little shocked (but not that shocked!) at people saying "it's not about bullying." For Nintendo, sure, but for the many smaller creators who are targets of harassment and pile-ons, being able to not have that pile-on visualised under their video or screenshotted for Twitter is good. And ultimately, even companies being able to hide likes and dislikes doesn't even seem like that big of a deal to me - a small user being piled on can actually do damage, but a massive company being shit on with a thumbs down isn't going to do anything. I can't imagine many people are thinking "let me go check what their social metrics are like before I buy their product." This isn't vital info being hidden away.

And hell, even with companies - who are not our friends, who we shouldn't care about, yadda yadda - those like/dislike ratios are battlegrounds for weirdo stans. I've seen music companies turn them off because a larger fandom has decided to mass downvote something by another artist just to be petty and assert the lamest show of power imaginable.

Woof, getting the booster plus flu shot at the same time really hit me hard. Horrible chills all night and I just generally feel like crap right now.

I don't even know what benefit anyone gets out of seeing the like/dislike ratio. You can still "send a message" or whatever by smashing that dislike button, no one's taking your voice away.

The most depressing thing was always the guarantee that any gaming video with any social commentary whatsoever would have a disproportionate number of dislikes

And this is surely one of the things that helps to poison the well - the more a vocal minority become convinced their hate is valid and the majority view, the more it empowers them.

And, importantly, there are creators who are genuine victims of this kind of pile-on. As other people are saying, this barely effects a major corporation like Nintendo. If outrage on the internet was bad for their business, Switch would never have taken off. For some people, these piles on are detrimental to their living and their health.

I get that Arlo is a Nintendo content creator, but I'm a little irritated seeing Arlo - and others, like Nintendo Life - frame this purely through the NSO angle. Yet another example of how twisted internet discourse is. I said it the other day: connecting largely unrelated things into a narrative is how sites and creators make money and it just helps this toxic stuff spiral on.

@Raccoon
Hey bud! Many people in the last couple pages have said stuff much better than I ever could, so I’ll try to keep it short:

You’re a cool person who’s made me laugh a lot, and like everyone else here, you’re more complex than your most recent take (and I mean that in general sense. I don’t know anything about what what went on in the Pokémon thread.) Too often we fixate on the last thing a person says, like somehow it invalidates everything else we know about them. It’s like we’re always keeping score for our own opinions in an effort to validate them and it feels like it has gotten to the point in society where we can be quick to cast someone aside in our minds for “scoring points for the other team.”

Beyond that, striving for growth is an awesome and mature outlook to have. Seeing how you’re self-aware of, look critically at, and take accountability for things you’ve said and done in the past, shows that you are better equipped to tackle that challenge than most people I’ve come across. You’ve undoubtedly grown already and are continuing to as we speak, so I have all the faith in the world you’ll achieve whatever personal goals you set for yourself.

We’ve all said and done our share of stupid shit in this world, and it knocks us down from time to time, but that doesn’t define who we are. It’s how we respond when we get back up that matters.

I love you, little Raccoon. Take care of yourself and good luck with graduation. I hope you and your sister are able to squeeze in some quality video game time together!

Oof, sorry to hear bud. How'd they even get a chance to read it before it was published, though?

@Ramune @MisterSpo
In regard to your “dislike” replies — well said. I was going to throw my two cents in, but the two of you laid out how I feel about it better than I ever could.

@Brofield
Mr. Peanutbutter is so damn cute. Congrats on the addition to your family!

They got it from me. It was a piece on a complicated and expensive construction project that is up for vote in a few weeks and they asked if they could see it before publishing. I told them that we usually don't do that but that I'd make an exception in case I didn't get all the facts right. I just couldn't guarantee that we'd change anything. Sent them the article, got a reply 2h later with three suggestions. Mulled over them, made small adjustments and that was that. Or so I thought.

Generally I'm a bit allergic to requests for "clearance". Especially when it's a spicy subject and someone wants to change passages to their favour. In this case one of the passages they suggested actually made them look worse but that's really their issue. Every now and then it can be helpful. In this case I'm glad I did it because we can show the mayor's pivot after the article was published.

Little rascal is up to eight successful escape attempts this morning 😂 I'll breathe easier once I can get a roof installed ahaha

At least there's a silver lining to all this, and good show making people aware of this.

Something something like video games, if you're facing adversity, it means it you're going the right way

I watch a lot of Arlo's videos and find them balanced and well reasoned. 🤷‍♂️

Recently his take on the OLED was fair and his excitement over Eric Barone's new game infectious.
Look, I used to watch his content religiously. I never really used to agree with him, but I thought the content itself was fine and his gimmick of being a puppet among the many other content creators was charming.. but once he discovered that being loud and only putting energy in complaints got him more views, it's when I got enough;

Back when Terry was announced for Smash Ultimate, he said that Nintendo knew people would be disappointed, that's why they announced more DLC right away lol;

Wait, have they confirmed it as a 2022 release?
It's in the 2022 section here:

Though they may mean that to cover "2022 and beyond." The text at the bottom does call these "games releasing on the Nintendo Switch in 2021 and 2022" but I guess these things are always subject to change.
Happy SMT V release days, folks.
I brought it inside on my way out the door this morning but now I am at work. This is my most anticipated Switch title ever so I guess I should've taken the day off, but I was an idiot and scheduled a bunch of stuff for today ages ago. This epic is not sweet.

Thanks!

Yeah, it's one of those things I had to learn at my very first internship. If no one gets a little mad at your article it's probably too boring lmao. (not entirely serious but maaybeeee a little)

Yep! At the end of the E3 trailer.

I cant wait to play Zelda U in 2015 So hype

i havent been active here over the last few days because ive given myself over to the dark lord that is ps5 hunting and it'd driving me insane

I think it's easier to believe BoTW2 will be out next year, because we actually saw substantial footage of the game (heck, we saw much more of the game in it's initial reveal than we ever saw of BoTW1 when it was first unveiled);

And with supposedly a lot of recycled assets, engine and so on, it shouldn't be so tasking on the team as the first one that had to be made from zero.

On top of that, they are under comparatively zero pressure to show the game early or hype people up about a close release date like they were for the first game.

Yeah, I liked your analysis about this a while ago about how a lot of these controversies are self-fueling and self-perpetuating. It doesn't help that many of these takes are hidden beneath layers of sarcasm to the point where it becomes impossible to tell how serious they are.

A small rant, but you know what's grinding my gears this morning: terrible customer service. I've been trying super hard to support local shops and not go for the big corps recently. There is this local game store where I live and I try to support them instead of ordering from Amazon/GameStop/Digital. But every time I get this weird interaction where I feel like I'm some nobody who knows NOTHING about games and the people there are these hyper PhD level game geniuses that HAVE TO speak to me in a condescending tone every time I'm trying to give them my money. And it happens every time with everyone in there.

It's the same bullshit feeling I get when I go to my local comic book shop. As a gay man of color, this is wild. I'm gonna go pick up my pre-order today after work, but I may just give up going into these spaces. Sorry for the rant. It's just frustrating.

I think at least twice a day about how Yuki Hayashi is the man to truly bridge the gap between Japan and the West: He took the highest cultural achievements of both, Dragon Quest and cape shit, and improved both.

Truly, we're not worthy to walk upon the same earth he walks on and to breathe the same air he breathes.
