StarTopic Metroid Prime Remastered |ST| Prime Prophecy Fulfilled

Man in retrospect it is a weird decision to make the visors set to the d-pad but the weapons set to the d-pad + button

Like I change weapons way more than visors and weapons are way less contextual, come on Retro!

Holy shit. As a first-time player, I just lost hours of progress (or at least it feels like it). Lost the Varia Suit.

And I even sequence broke (I think) by skipping Magmoor Cavern North, going back to Tallon IV Overworld and finding Magmoor Cavern East, then making my way to Phendrana Drifts North without ever exploring Magmoor Cavern North.

My hours of bliss were ruined by a lack of any autosave whatsoever. I can't believe save rooms are still this infrequent in the remaster. Lost 4 missile expansions too. Oh well, I at least killed the first major boss again and saved.
I hope that didn't ruin the game for you, but I totally understand if it did.

Did the Zelda remasters add autosave now that I think about it? I think Skyward Sword HD had it but not the 3DS ones.

Absolutely did not ruin the game overall haha, just bummed me out for about an hour of gameplay. But I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I was able to return to that spot knowing the general layout this time. Just got the
Boost Ball

Time to post this ad:

Never saw this advert back in the day but holy shit is it hype.

Waiting for the physical release for this game but damn is it painful. I downloaded the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U back in the day and never managed to complete the first game so I’m really looking forward to beating it for the first time.

I think there's a setting to swap the two.

First timer, this game has sucked me in and won't let go

Wow, thank you! I feel so dumb. The funny thing is I did already spend a few minutes in the options menu when I started the playthrough to figure out gyro.

I was joking about the Retro part anyways 😂

I definitely miss the sequence breaks. Coming from the original GC release where you could get the plasma beam before fighting Thardus, I still get a bit confused about the proper item order in the game: doing sequence breaks was so natural to me that I grew to think of that as the best way to play the game. And honestly, it was hella fun.

Hope Prime 4 will be more accommodating of sequence breaks, specially after dread.

I'm a bit stuck after getting the
Boost Ball
, but still having a great time. The world is unbelievably immersive

Don’t worry, that’s a pretty classic “stuck” point. Do you have the hint system on? It’ll eventually point you in a direction if you wander around too long without making progress (if that’s something you want! You can also turn it off)

Yeah not gonna lie, I've gotten stuck more than I'd like considering I've played this before (though 7 years ago at this point!). One or two of those times were fairly obvious, too. I just recently almost didn't make progress because I thought a gate wasn't destructible, took me a few minutes to figure out because it wasn't scannable. :censored:

Glad I don't have to feel too dumb, haha. I have the system off for now, but I'm thinking of turning it back on soon. I have a feeling my next step is somewhere in
Tallon Overworld
since it feels like I've only scratched the surface there

Also playing this game, I wonder if the next Metroid Prime will have seamless environments without elevators? I remember being kind of disappointed that Dread went for the elevator approach, but I think that's because it was 2D and those games have pretty fast paced exploration so it broke up pacing. With Prime the areas are just massive sprawling levels you explore at a slow pace, so the world kind of feels less segmented and more expansive from the get-go. At the same time, mini-areas like Sunken Frigate make me see the potential in such an approach in Prime 4 for larger biomes, and it's probably at least possible to pull off on the Switch as opposed to being an issue for Gamecube and Wii.

Found the way forward! So satisfying, and yeah, definitely super easy to overlook that path.

While playing, I was thinking it would be cool if Prime 4 had at least some parts where areas were not separated by elevators. Like, imagine if you explore deep in Chozo Ruins and find a path that leads directly into Magmoor Caverns.

I also feel that Prime 4 will definitely add fast travel like the other Prime games and later 2D Metroid games did. Prime 1 involves a lot of travel by foot and while I never mind it, I can see newer players finding it a bit tedious.

I'm done Live A Live so I can now devote myself fully to Metroid Prime.

It is a game that feels good as soon as you turn it on. There's no other way to describe it.

Got a little stuck there first as well. Prime - just like Dread! - is really good at subtly guiding the player's path, so initially I got the right spot, but I hadn't figured out how to use the BB's momentum just yet. Got some optional stuff before the game told me "oi, fiddle around in that spot some more alright?" which did it for me =) .

I prefer with elevators because would go from a lava area to ice area without look incoherent. Also, is more easier for look at this type of maps 3D.

Jetzels are much more frustrating the fight in this game, as attempting to charge a shot will hit them with the small shot and make them close. Glad I remembered to not trust the game when it tries to send you down the frigate without the gravity suit lol

One of the best things about this Remaster is that I've been seeing many people referencing Dark Souls and FROM games as spiritual successors of the 3D-Metroid formula - and that's completely right.

The interconnected world, environmental storytelling (yes, Prime has lots of it), the slow atmospheric rather than action packed pace, the lock on focused combat, the descriptive lore behind menus... It's all there.

On the comments session of a lot of youtube videos you can read people that have never played a Metroid game (before Prime Remastered) saying that they can see from where FROM took some of its inspiration.

And incredibly, Prime is as good today as it was in 2002. This game is so freaking ahead of its time that I can barely remember a modern shooter or walking sim better than it.

Welp, that was fun. The only problem for me was the absence of britghness settings, some areas were way more darker on my TV then on Switch screen.

Yeah, I've noticed that too with my OLED. Maybe in those areas I should give handheld mode a go.

Me looping around Phendrana Drifts three times before spotting the door I needed to progress when I probably should have just checked the map:

@Yazmat @Dragoncaine I've noticed a lot of people online having brightness problems with this game (including myself!) and what many of us discovered was that the cause was our Switch color output setting (typically set to auto) was not cooperating with the TV, causing a range mismatch and blown out contrast.

Fixing those settings instantly solved the darkness issue for myself and several others elsewhere on the net. Make sure your settings are properly configured between the Switch and your TV, see below post:

PSA for any goofs like me may be experiencing areas of pitch black and crushed darks:
As usual, always remember to make sure your color spaces are matched up between devices!

My TV was set to YCBCR(limited) color space, while my Switch was set to Automatic (and was apparently outputting RGB). I believe YCBCR is typically the norm for gaming, however switching that TV setting to Auto (which caused the tv to choose RGB instead, or by manually switching it to RGB) instantly solved my crushed blacks by matching up the color spaces between the two devices. Blacks are still black but areas of shadow are now full of detail.

I'm a little embarrassed because I'm a bit of a display enthusiast and usually very conscious of these settings. I don't recall ever having this matchup issue with my Switch games before though, that's weird. However a recent TV firmware update scrambled all my display settings, so I'll blame it on that.

Before: Switch Automatic (RGB), TV YCBCR (Limited)
After: Switch Automatic (RGB), TV Automatic (RGB)
Whether you go with Limited or Full (or Auto), just make sure both are matching up!

This game and the original are up there with the best 2D to 3D transitions for any series.

That's the holy trinity.

Time to post this ad:

That commercial is what put the game on my radar and caused me to beg my parents to get a gamecube. It's awesome how they intercut live action footage with actual gameplay footage, and the brief cuts totally work.

I change my avatar here on famiboards to call back to some old Direct Speculation thread nonsense, but more typically I use the below image which is Samus from this commercial (with a photo of the First4Figure's Gunship statue inserted behind):

Well, I got past the Infrared Shenanigans (for anyone having trouble: treat that entire section as if you're a sniper. Charged electrical beam and a single rocket gets rid of all the dudes.) And I'm back to being utterly and completely in awe. It's eery, beautiful, wistful and has incredible level & world design. It's made my Switch feel brand new. It makes me think that game design hasn't progressed all that much these past 20 years.

Earlier I made the comparison to Morrowind, and I'll do it again: the eery beauty of this game reminds me so much of stalking around empty Dwemer ruins. Background info is doled out optionally and tastefully as well. It's suitably tense and creepy. Dweme.... erm I mean Chozo Ghosts, brrrr.

Just got the frosty beam and DANG it feels good to fire - and to maybe finally enter the crashed ship!

Favourite Switch release since Dread and Skyward Sword in 2021. (2022 was slow for my tastes.)

I'm in the minority of the Phendrana research lab (and all of Phazon Mines) being some of my favorite parts of the game. I love how intense and uninviting it feels. It's part of what makes the serenity of the rest of Phendrana and Tallon Overworld even more pronounced.

Oh also, LOVE the new visor effects for the thermal visor, and it's sound effect is so cool!

Another thing that surprised me about this is that despite how good it looks at 60fps, the battery doesn't die nearly as fast as in other similar games on the Switch like Portal 2 or Doom Eternal, and the fan doesn't go as crazy as in those. Is still not as good as an indie or an old emulated game in that sense, but it still kind of shocking imo.
2 aspects:
first:
they are using a propriatary engine that never had to do much more the run first party games on nintendo hardware. --> lean

second (and more relevant):
the CPU is probably bored?
The games logic and physics are unchanged,
and while the GPU is probably doing a lot, it being an SOC and sharing the space with the cpu, having the cpu sipping power means the while SoC is not getting to much heat -> less cooling, less power to the fan ->longer battery life.
I assume thats also the reason for the 100% fixed performance, GPU output can be scaled, and the benefit of never really going big (most areas are confined) there is not much variance that they needed to account for.

I expect MP4 to struggle in all of those areas simply because they will try to do more (some open areas, more destruction physics or such, more stressing enemy encounters etc.)

This game is dangerous.

HOURS spent just wandering through and trying to interact with everything in the world here has just zipped by for me, and now my weekend is basically gone! 😭

But I love it. The much maligned "FPA" moniker Nintendo branded this game with is absolutely spot on imo.

I went through this section earlier today and yeah! Couldn't agree more, the transition into their fortified lab was so cool and it feels like a big moment to finally meet up with the Space Pirates in earnest and immediately throw down.

I took so many captures of the thermal vision, it's a great effect! And the regular overworld feels extra inviting to get back to after a bunch of scraps like this:

Just a reminder :
The Totem Scan Log is automatically gained wether or not you scanned the totem or got its Artefact before scanning the totem.

I said I was not going to buy this game because I replayed it about one year ago. Every time I look at a screenshot of the remaster, I itch closer to caving in and giving Nintendo 40 bucks.

My only complaint about dual sticks with gyro controls is beam select, it could be a more elegant way of switch beams than hold X+ dpad, like hold L +ABXY buttons or right stick could be better, but it's a minor thing, still is best control scheme across every versions.

I remember the Phazon Mines in 2002.

I was playing through it, and it had been a couple of hours and I hadn’t found a save station. My parents were telling me it was time to turn the game off, that we had to leave to go somewhere, but I was trying (in vain) to explain to them that I couldn’t just turn it off and I needed to find a place to save the game.

Didn’t matter. My dad comes in and just unplugs my GameCube. I didn’t finish the game until a few years later because I was just so angry about losing all of that progress.

I’m kind of intimidated approaching that area of the game again.

Just finished the phazon mines first time this afternoon. My god dying in that part is brutal, was quite pissed for a while...Got the power bomb with 18health left , before finally getting a save station.

Kids today will never know the pain of being forced to quit playing/go somewhere/etc and being unable to save and losing a ton of progress. I wouldn’t have minded them adding like a “quick save and quit” option that allows you to pick up right where you left off, but then deletes that save so you can’t use it as a real save point or something. Although I guess these days putting the console to sleep is roughly the same thing.

The path to the first checkpoint in Phazon Mines is the most brutal and one of the best segments of the game.
Just finished that part earlier today, and the game hadn't challenged me much until then. I figured that I would be fine since this is my 3rd time playing Prime.

Soon enough I lost a few energy tanks and things got intense! I was never dangerously close to dying, but I recognized I hadn't saved in a while and took things really slow after that.

I remember one part in Prime 2 where I lost like 45 minutes of progress, and it was aggravating. That's one of the less modern features in those games, I guess.

Prime 2 segment I'm referencing, if anyone is curious:

the part where you go underwater and fight that big fish for the gravity boost (I forget its name). The only save station was RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING of the area, and I remember struggling to even reach the boss a few times.

You can swap dpad to weapons and button+dpad to visors, if that helps.

Gamestop has the physical release date listed as tomorrow (2/13) on their site and on the app. I guess I'll find out if that's true or not tomorrow.

I adored this back in the day, my GOAT for so long and I'm blown away by this remake.
Hard to imagine how they could have done a better job, looks and feels fantastic.
An utter joy.

I really hope they know with MP4 that all they have do is keep the feel and atmosphere of this remaster and they're most of the way there.

Any idea how easy the casual mode is? I never beat this as a kid/teen. I finished Dread but I feel like it was only because of the frequent checkpoints, which I know this doesn’t have.
