The E3 news is just depressing to me, the speculation part can be fun but I always liked having a concrete date for E3. I'm honestly not looking forward to having to wonder if or when we're getting a direct in the summer and what kind of direct it will be. Unless we get a proper one earlier than we expect, then I'll be happy haha.

....Why is this exciting?

Maybe I just don't understand "anticipate stuff on a forum" culture.
it's just a little more interesting

we're in a thread that was opened a month ago with a strong sentiment that it'd be in february. lo and behold, it's going to be the same week as every year. meanwhile, E3-less summers are a tougher nut to crack.

no speculation would be one thing, speculation in times of certainty is lame imo

As always, their current games in development and their readiness to be shown will dictate when a direct is held and what is shown in it. E3 was just a magnet doesn't mean games aren't still in development.

I mean, this is a Nintendo Direct Speculation thread haha, not just Nintendo at large

you all know the games come out either way, right? direct timing has no bearing on anything other than its own fun

for those that are worried by this news, I have a recommended path forward

  1. Hibernate until May 12
  2. Awaken, Prosper
  3. Back to Sleep
  4. Wake up by Christmas
  5. Surprise! More games

As a subscriber of the "Nintendo is artificially inflating the value of the E3 by cancelling Directs when it doesn't happen" theory, I'm shocked they straight up abandoned it this year. Since it was of their own choice this time, a June Direct still isn't off the table imo. Either that, or they're only not participating because they have nothing to show and there's no June Direct

Sigh. I just wanted a nice Sunday-Tuesday in June where I could watch either some live shows or streamed events from XBOX/Square-Enix/Ubisoft/etc. that culminated in a Nintendo Direct. I don't care whether it's part of E3 or whatever, but what I do want is for them to all be within a few days of each other and known about well in advance. I like having everything concentrated within a few days time, having all the hype and everything close together into something that really feels like an Event. But apparently that's too much to ask for these days.

(I'm not like... mad or anything, but I am definitely a little disappointed)

I've always thought speculation about what would be shown is endlessly more interesting than "speculate what day a direct will be with basically no information at hand". It was fun the first time it happened on the old place with the "reset the clocks" meme, culminating in the Chibi-Robo on fire tweet from Nintendo, but every time since has just felt like people kinda trying to force the magic of that again, at least in a way, though I guess it can be a little fun. I suppose I'm kind of raining on this thread's parade though; I mostly come here for the scoops to stay up to date about the most esoteric Nintendo rumors and seeing if there's going to be a day I might have to make an excuse to leave work for 30 minutes for soon, not to speculate myself.

If there is going to be speculation on this I'd prefer we have some kind of certainty so there's always a small chance they buck the trend (like now, it's technically possible they skip the February Direct for a March one, however unlikely).

E3 gave publishers a reason to present games. Without it we will continue to have an uncoordinated mess where every publisher does their own thing. I get that this has proofed to be successful over the past few years and makes it easier for the publisher. It is also not really to bad if you only want to be up to date about certain platforms, publishers or even just a certain game (which is let’s be honest the majority of people), but for someone like me who is interested in the gaming industry as a whole, I don‘t know, it‘s just too spread out and to many small events. Even though I see that it also has its benefits for indie games for example.
I guess I‘m just an old man yelling at clouds.

the bolded is definitely true, and after next week I'll probably be ready to move on for good. it's just an adjustment for me, y'know? I'm not really taking it well I suppose

I've long felt that the really interesting talk happens in the first party thread

Let's all admit that it's very funny and parodic that a Direct is happening in the next 10 days and the thread is talking about June.
wait... you actually watch the direct once it's announced?

I thought we were supposed to just start speculating about the next one

Just checked and it seems what was privated was the Radiant Silvergun trailer from the September Direct. (And it might've been privated months ago)
Sounds good, thanks. Won't make a video about it. Was just curious. Thansk for sleuthing for me.

nothing is more indicative of the superfluousness of a february direct hype thread than its current state

I've seen way more posts about team january's ridiculous hopes than any of team january's ridiculous hopes

Whether Nintendo will have a full Direct in the summer or not ultimately comes down to their release calendar/strategy. Of course, the publishers' events will probably spread out through the summer and that's not as exciting as E3 was.

But hey, there's at least a Direct coming in the next few weeks, let's not forget that ;)

Oh for sure I love(loved?) E3, having all that news crammed into one week made it feel special. My post was more aimed at people acting as if this means we're not gonna hear from Nintendo ever again.

Everybody just gotta relax and enjoy the speculation and shenanigans. Who knows, some people’s educated guesses could actually come true? The direct is usually under an hour and over… that’s it. The journey, however is what makes it enjoyable.

I haven't watched his video yet, but I do know that Arlo's take is that it's better to have less ambitious games that reuse assets and cut corners and whatnot than it is to have games that don't if the former means we get releases less frequently.

It’s actually quite nice without being told when to expect a Nintendo Direct! It will just come randomly one day. Cryptic hints for games are always fun though.

Wow that sucks, I was actually planning a trip to E3 with some friends, would’ve been a literal dream come true, but we’re definitely not gonna go if the big 3 aren’t there

This recent Arlo video is more obnoxious than usual.

"How could games take five years to make???" Arlo, have you played a video game made in the last 7 years.
Arlo is the only person I know of who got actually upset over the development restart rather than being grateful Retro was back on the series and that Nintendo was open and transparent about it.

well we've hit two points on the cycle

  • question the existence of this thread
  • complain about arlo

a direct announcement must be close

The lack of E3 presence means just that: no presence at E3 -- no booths and such. In no way does this change any intended plan to host a June Direct. That is, if Nintendo plans to host one in June.

Plans can still change though right? Say they were planning a June Direct, then when the decision came to skip E3, they just say fuck it let's skip that too. Last year weren't you expecting a General summer direct and had to edit your podcast because plans changed?

According to VGC’s publishing sources with knowledge of Nintendo’s plans, the company has decided to skip E3 2023 – the event’s first physical show in four years – because it feels it has fewer major releases than usual ready to show and which would justify significant event space.

What were they supposed to do? Beat the original team until development improved?

I feel the same way as i tend to take the week off as holiday as i have been watching it since back in the day When Geoff did E3 interviews and walked around the showroom on G4/Tech TV so nearly 20 years.

source: IGN tweeted it!

EDIT: lmfao wait "But organiser says it's received "a tremendous amount of interest" from "the biggest companies in the industry"

... ma'am there's no but here; you have ZERO amount of interest from the biggest three companies in the industry

I guess Arlo would have rather had a barely functional Metroid Prime 4 soon rather than an actually good Metroid Prime 4 later.
