Imagine the excitement from Geoff Keighley when he gets the go ahead from Nintendo for an open world Zelda announcement. The only catch is he can't see it ahead of time. No biggie.

So Keighley builds up this hype cycle around a major Nintendo announcement, and then boom reveal time comes. Four minutes! This must be something truly significant!

But instead it is mostly two old men talking loosely about their upcoming release schedule, while off-screen footage of the new Zelda game plays in the background with Link riding on a horse in auto-pilot mode.

Well that's all for now, thank you for watching!

I'm sure Geoff wasn't into it but this was one of the greatest Nintendo showcases of that decade

I dunno, but I just checked in case I misremembered, and look:

September 22, 2017, in an interview with Gamespot:

October 6, 2017, when asked the same thing by Express Online:

Who knows, really. Maybe he asked about the possibility of doing it, he was told "no" so the next time they asked him about it he came up with the "not a good fit" explanation.
I wonder who told him no, or if it is too technically ambitious to get it running on Switch. The games themselves being several years old now doesn't make it seem like it's gonna be detrimental to sales on the other consoles despite now being a Microsoft property, so...

Yeah, that is extremely peculiar

Holy shit, Pokémon Stars lives.

Seriously, why would Game Freak port Pokémon US/UM to Switch now? They did not even try with this "leak".

It got people to watch and talk about his show. That's all that matters. This is also the same person who had a Fast and the Furious game be the final reveal at one of his shows. Even seeing offscreen glimpses of a new Nintendo game is a step above many of the big reveals he has had in the past so I don't think he was all that upset.

Anyway, the last year TGA was final nail in the coffin. Am not watching anymore for Nintendo news. And that comes from someone who said that BOTW2 will be there in 2019.

Here we are. The last uneventful morning before we start resetting the clock, though I think we should be looking at Tuesday and beyond for any announcements. Still thinking the week of the 6th, but I hope it's on the 8th since I host a virtual intern class on Thursdays from 4:15-5:15pm EST every week.

For golf it really does feel like they had the same plans but then just dropped support early, it feels very abrupt kinda like the Mario maker 2 support. And for strikers, is all the updates out? They only had 3 iirc.
Mario Maker 2 got far more content added then MM1. The only difference is instead of many smaller updates over the course of like 18 months Nintendo did two dumps of content. MM2's final update added more content then every Mario sport got for free combined.

Wasn't last year better than usual for Nintendo news? We got a couple of third party announcements, DLC for Fire Emblem, and Bayonetta Origins.

I don't think we'll get another game like Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99 or Mario 35, cause it's just too late, but will we get another weird one-off localisation like the Famicom Fire Emblem or Earthbound Beginnings?

Maybe the Frog for whom the bell tolls?
I dare not say Mother 3.

Zippo said more 99 games so it's happening

i'm expecting something next week or the week after because bayonetta origins is out in 7 weeks and all we have at the moment is the reveal trailer and i can't see them waiting for the 15th-16th before giving us more info. And considering the nature of the game, it's best to fit it in a direct rather than a random trailer on Twitter.

What do you mean too late? Did NSO stop existing?

Ik im mostly talking about how the end for the content felt abrupt, not the amount of content added.

I would think that if the Switch successor is a more traditional follow up to the Switch with BC that there wouldn't be a reason to "hold off" on the next 99 battle royale game.

Aces was great. A shame people didn't stick with it for long. And those that did mostly were doing tourneys with the crappy gimmick.
Hot take

Even if every Mario Sport game on Switch was packed to the gills with content like people claim they want, they'd still only play it for like a week or two before moving on to the new hotness.

I don't really think I'm disagreeing haha.

In terms of content there is no reason for them to not have full content at launch with added content afterwards. It's not good for a game's longevity, if there's a chance, if people feel it is barebones at the start. What's the reason to come back? Whereas if someone is playing a game they feel had enough content and enjoyed their time with it, they may come back to it for DLC.

For me, I only kept coming back to Aces because I'm a huge fan of tennis and I'm desperate for a tennis game that feels good. With golf? I stopped playing it because it felt so barebones compared to the 3DS version which was arguably the best one, so I had no reason to come back to it.

For me the Mario sports games are like a Mario Party titles. I'll pull one out when I have a group of friends over, we'll play for an 60-90 minutes, have a good time, and move onto the next game. The single player story modes of Aces and Super Rush pulled me in a little longer, but at the end of the day it's "just Tennis/golf"

I think the pandemic complicated development for both Strikers and Golf. Tennis Aces came out before it (2018, I believe) and got new characters and modes every single month for 12 months.

Strikers and Golf would've likely enjoyed that same kind of content output had it not been for that pandemic.

Apparently Nintendo was not pleased with the person who tweeted the burning Chibi-Robo on the Nintendo of America account, according to Kit and Krysta.

I still wonder what the heck even happened there.

What??

That was so good though?!

Nintendo corporate hates fun

It was probably an NOA employee who was watching people online waiting for a Direct and decided to have some fun with it without authorization. It might not seem like a big deal but Directs and marketing are planned well in advance through the hard work of many people and people don't like it when someone potentially spoilers their work. Not to mention that the Tweet has hinting at Dark Souls coming to Switch. Even if people at Nintendo were happy about it, someone at Namco might not have been. Not to mention that it likely head to false expectations that Chibi Robo would be in the Direct.

Was it? I didn't think of it that way, but that tweet was kind of like a Rorschach test. Everyone saw a different message in it and that's probably exactly what Nintendo wanted to avoid.

Yes. Dark Souls was the final announcement of the Mini and the picture was Chibi Robo praising the sun. It's pretty obvious. It might have been before the reveal but it's pretty damn obvious in retrospect.

Nintendo needs to find any way possible to get Fantasy Life on the Switch. Promise Level 5 some low budget japan exclusive anime or something I just want to play this game on a bigger screen.

Anyone expecting H2 reveals or mostly a focus on H1 with a lengthy TotK blowout?
uhhh. Mix of mostly H1 with one or two H2 reveals, as per usual. No TotK blowout, instead a treehouse announcement for it. But then again they sure can go 10 minutes of ToTK content so that may be considered a blowout haha.
