it really is because modern headline directs go at such a blistering pace

it does a disservice to anything in depth
Headlines are no place for in depth yeah. That's why there are things called "Nintendo Spotligh" that's their official name I learned on their website. Basically every trailer that's not part of headlines.

It was also a fantastic bait-and-switch. Like I could feel the groans of the community over Miyamoto talking about a mobile game in a Direct, and then wham, he hits us with the good shit.
I had no problem with it really, it was more that it's a mobile game presented in the Direct.

the pikmin bloom segment was the best segment in any switch direct because it had shigeru miyamoto explaining the design philosophy of a game

what more could a nintendo fan want?
I like these types of segments. People may hate it, but the segment where the coordinator at Nintendo explains how she knit yarn yoshi and it became the idea for the plushy amiibo. There also is a lot of explanation on the game in that whole thing That was peak direct content.

That's why am glad that E3 is back this year. Last time Miyamoto appeared on Treehouse Live at E3 was (i kid you not). E3 2016. (But he appeared in Treehouse with Switch and BOTW and brief Odyssey segment January 2017). He was at E3 2017,18,19 but no appearance in Treehouse Live whatsoever. Can't wait for him to talk about Pikmin 4 how long he wants.

Even if it’s not what it used to be and had all kinds of issues especially lately, E3 simply existing solves so many problems and gives the year an anchor point that it very much needs. I’m excited to have it back.

I would love Directs back with these developer insights but with how much content there is I simply don't see it happening. It was there because it was rough. Maybe introduce the another type of presentation specifically for this? But at least we have Treehouses at E3 with EPD staff. Can't complain.

Ehh, the 2022 Direct felt off for other reasons too. I didn't like the new voiceover, Pikmin Bloom was talked about for way too long, there were too many farming social sims (this is coming from someone who loves Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing), and Pikmin 4 and Tears of the Kingdom had very small teasers. Not great.
It was kind of lackluster I thought. Especially against the Sony Direct on the same day lol

People say Nintendo can't surprise us anymore, but that isn't true. They managed to make a Direct with Fire Emblem, Pikmin 4, and freaking BOTW2 boring.

sometimes I'm more weirded out by the insinuation that I should care what someone thinks than what they think. in which case, mission accomplished? I really shouldn't let that part bother me either

i agree but also not?

Like, i think it was very easy to predict a new 2d game 2 years ago.
After how Samus Returns sold?
No.
If there hadn't been Rumors and people like Nate corroborating them I wouldn't have blieved in it.
It was pretty dark times for Metroid.

i never felt sr was about sales. It was about quality and people enjoyed it very much.

Nintendo said SR's sales were "strong" in one of dem papers i think too. Not only that but i doubt nintendo predicted SR to sell bonkers as no new game in 2017 sold over a million copies, only miitopia doing it barely.

And MP4's reboot showed that Nintendo had high standards and expectations for the prime series at least.

would be cool if the next direct starts with another fire emblem game 🤓
This but unironically.

I could go for FE4 remake right after engage.

Extremly insulting of you to claim that the direct where Ocotpath 2 got announced was "boring".

Like, in front of my face and eveything, how shameful!

This is a thread of mostly shit posting and memes until we get a nugget of real info. Might as well improv and play up your passion or anger towards something as long as it's all in good fun.

That's why the did 3 GDC talks, making of BOTW series and also released the two whole books on behind the scenes of Odyssey and BOTW.
I was talking to someone the other day who put it in a way that really resonated with me: the audience has changed. Nintendo Directs have pivoted away from any behind the scenes talk in favor of their current form.

Development stuff is now something to be sought out, rather than being pushed.

The other point is how many people actually want these. It seems like it's no brainer for most of us here, but it's Nintendo who has the actual stats.

exactly. Nintendo Directs have gone from targeting Nintendo fans to targeting the hundred million people who own one of these things.

in the 3DS and Wii U era it made sense to target Nintendo fans because they were the only people who bought to systems. we live in a very different world now, and this is the way things ought to be

Which also makes me question why so many people keep keep bringing up "I miss old Nintendo when they did the skits during Directs" but no one mentions something about how the miss "inside of development" segments. The latter could give you the insights from arguably one of the most talented developers on Earth, while the first can give you "oh, that was fun" for 20 seconds. I would rather like have them have one of "developer's note" in the Direct than a skit which is just a skit.

skits are fine but I can't remember ever caring for them. the 2015 puppets were neat, but 2014's robot chicken did nothing for me then and does nothing for me today. meanwhile the splatoon reveal and yoshi's woolly world re-reveal are surprisingly detailed with lots of insight into creative decisions

I don't miss skits, but I do miss the slower pace and developer info. again, though, that's a niche interest

if I could destroy headlines forever I would do it
Me too. One of my least favorite things is how the headline will often have a tease of what the game is and even a picture, meaning for example Chrono Cross was kinda unceremoniously spoiled in the middle of the Direct, by its own headline, rather than the shock and surprise of like a black screen fading into the book from the intro along with the excellent intro music.. we don't get shit like that a lot anymore outside of the "one more thing" at the very end. We don't have time to be surprised by or savor the announcements, it's like they're just running cattle through a coral now. Do I care too much about this? Probably!

I miss this sort of thing so damn much.

I didn't actually

I really don't care that people don't like Pikmin, it's a weird and niche thing
I feel that way about a lot of stuff. I love weird and niche things, and I'd go as far as to say I almost don't want people to care about them. Games, movies, anime, cars.. like the stuff I've loved has always started niche but in many cases I've had to watch as a lot of it became popular and the drastic shift in not just the culture around it but the way the market caters to it and eventually changes it really... irks me. But I know the only way for this stuff to survive is to be successful, and the only way for it to be successful is to be popular, and so the very thing I don't want is the only way for it to feasibly keep going.

I want there to be a way for weird niche shit to be able to afford to stay weird and niche. I don't want stuff I love to have to change in order to chase a larger market. It's selfish and dumb of me but like, fuck.

I'm actually really happy that Miyamoto can just kinda fuckin do whatever. I hope he does whatever he wants for the rest of his life.

And people don't even realise that skits were just purely NOA thing (NOE did few too), japanese Directs rarely had skits (Miyamoto, Iwata vacuum thing maybe?). With Switch, Directs became globalized so NOA efforts were put to rest. But I miss the "directly to you gesture" while it was Iwata's thing I remember that Ishihara used it in Pokemon Direct after Iwata passed and even Miyamoto used it in Nintendo theme park Direct. But I know it's obvious why they don't want to go with it.
Anyway, this maybe starts to be too pesimistic so good time to end it.

In the context of the Wii U it's not hard to see why the skits and developer interviews were construed as filler, especially at E3. If Nintendo started bringing that stuff back in a major way I'd be worried about their software pipeline

these are my favorite """skits"""

iwata holding bananas, the vacuum, and in recent times doug bowser's brief introduction

edit: if takahashi and koizumi playing volleyball counts it's definitely up there
this wasn't really part of the Direct but also good

Tomadachi Life Direct reminded me that the only Directs I ever intentionally skipped were Tomadochi Life, Fire Emblem, and Dragalia Lost

Remember the Tomodachi Life Direct?

Good times.
I miss Satoru Shibata.

Really good to see that everyone is nice and calm in here. Next week really feels like the start of newcomers' mass migration to the site as rumors start heating up - a national holiday in my book!
