Fair enough, but why these designers specifically?
just because they're around and no one knows what they're up to

with 3D Mario being well taken care of my guess would actually be Pikmin, which is at its heart reliant on clever level design

If we don't get news this year, I swear I'll protest outside Nintendo headquarters wearing nothing but a red necktie!

You've been warned Nintendo!

I want to see Aonuma in the next Direct, but I don't want to be terrified during the first 10 seconds of his possible appearance.
You could feel a pin drop when he showed up and announced the delay of Zelda

Only other time I felt tense like that during directs is during a Smash segment wondering who is gonna get confirmed (or deconfirmed)

here's a breakdown of the number of retail games nintendo have published for switch each year since the console's launch

2017 - 10 total, 2 were rereleases
2018 - 17, 7 were rereleases
2019 - 17, 3 were rereleases
2020 - 13, 6 were rereleases
2021 - 15, 5 were rereleases
2022 - 11, 1 rerelease

that's an average of around 14 games per year - 10 new, 4 rereleases

right now, 2023 has 4 slated releases, with 1 of them being a rerelease. going by precedent, it's likely there are a double digit number of nintendo-published games that'll come out this year that we don't know about yet
accurate and useful list, kudos.

let's try to predict a possible publishing list, just for fun.

6 re-releases: Metroid Prime HD, Baten Kaitos, Kirby Wii Deluxe (officially announced), F-Zero GX remastered, Advance Wars maybe?, Pokémon SV complete edition

9 brand new release: Fire Emblem Engage, Bayonetta Origins, Totk, Pikmin 4 (we already know about these games), Rhythm Heaven, a 2D platform (Mario or DK),
maybe a casual games, a Musou and Mario Sports/Baseball?

I think I'm stretching a bit but it's feasible

This is really useful to have. We've seen maybe a third - or perhaps only a quarter - of what Nintendo have this year. I could see the total number of releases being higher than last year if there are more re-releases planned, which seems likely.

All of this Kong talk and I can't avoid hoping we will get DK 64 this year. I have been wanting to replay it outside of the N64, and I remember buying it when it launched on WiiU, and I just played 5 minutes and erased the game. It looked awfully dark. Hopefully a NSO release will do justice to it.

You know what, I'm gonna force Nintendo's hand! I have 10ish golden medals left to get in DKC Tropical Freeze and after that I have done every possible thing in that game: KONG, puzzle pieces, hard mode (also with KONG) and then time trials. Then they cannot ignore Donkey Kong anymore, that will show them to show a new DK game in the next direct

Otherwise I will send them an email

We are 113 days away from the release of TotK. When will they finally give us more info? This is ridiculous.
I strongly agree. I think people really overestimate how easily this will sell. BOTW was a launch game of a very hyped system, the first open world Zelda game, one of the highest rated games that broke new ground in the genre. It had a lot going for it. Why should these 30 million people care again for a game using the same world? I don't. I am a 2/10 on the hype level. Those 30 million aren't all hard-core gamers. At best, a third. How will they sell this game to everyone who doesn't follow? My friends (casual) who loved BOTW don't care at all even after I told them. They say "sounds too similar"...even though they buy CoD every time..

I can use anecdotal evidence too. My friends are hyped and keep asking me if I've heard any rumors or seen any leaks about the game. I think you're underestimating how big of a reaction TotK will get when they finally go all in with marketing.

Shorter, more intense hype cycles are easier to maintain through release.
Yep, and in these uncertain times when a delay can rear its head literally at the last minute, i understand why not just nintendo, but other companies as well are keeping details close to their chest. I really think that cyberpunk scared alot of industry away from announcing dates too early, or showing off gameplay too early.

Are your friends Call of Duty Xbox people that bought Switch just to play Zelda and bought no other game? Likely not. And obviously we'll see. I'll say it...it won't break 20 million. Mark my [90% likely wrong but for shits and giggles] words. gasp

My brother is (well that and Fire Emblem)

Checkmate atheist

Now if we're done having stupid anecdotal "my friend/family counts more then your friend/family" arguments, we can get back to direct speculation discussion.

Yeah, that's my take away from this. A holiday 2024/early 2025 release window gives devs time to catch up, so 3D Mario isn't so important anymore.
Yeah, I am not that disappointed thinking that there is 3D Mario this year. It's a bummer it won't be for new hardware? Yes. Will it still be one hell of a masterpiece? Yes.

Yeah, the bummer here is that somehow new hardware feels so far away (possibly even 2025 which is insane), yet we shouldn't exactly see a lack of meaningful games released in the next two years if we still have that long to go for new hardware. It'd be nice if Nintendo could actually drop the successor when its specs would still be impressive, though.

my current guess is 2D Mario

a very impressive 3D Mario is just about their only option to really sell a new system
well they could sell it with something like Luigi's Mansion 4. There is plenty of options. Either way, we should know better in next weeks were we stand with 2D/3D Mario.

If it's 2025 (which is possible now I guess), there's a lot of other titles that could be done in time. Kirby and Pokemon for example.

It would be so funny if EPD Tokyo had bigger absence than Retro Studios. That's why it won't happen. EPD Tokyo 2023, we are going for it.

My own guess for this year's big Mario game is Mario vs DK, simply named as Mario vs Donkey Kong 23. An ode to one of the best Game Boy games ever made, a true successor. Will have both 3D and 2D stages and option to play as Movie Mario and Movie DK. And a custom stage maker.

Damn. This is a bummer.

I'm ready to buy new Nintendo hardware, and really don't have any interest in figuring out emulation.

Makes very little sense to me. Nintendo first party software is what will separate this from the Steam Deck. Nintendo releasing a new console where

3D Zelda isn't until early 2028 at the earliest
3D Mario isn't until late 2027 at the earliest
Who knows about Mario Kart because of the current DLC plans
Who knows about Smash

With the launch in late 2024? Does not seem likely at all.
