I'm gonna be needlessly negative and say it won't even crack 80

It'll feel good when it's higher

Gonna go with 84, it’ll be praised for visuals and gameplay but the story won’t hold up favorably compared to 3H.

Really looking forward to playing it in any case!

It's gonna be 88/89.
It will be praised due to the improvements over three houses, moreso the graphics, but won't have as much praise on its story so the score stays the same.
I think it can be 90 if it somehow manages to please everyone but it's just getting harder and harder to get there.

Definitely ain't dropping to low 80s lol there's literally no reason for that.

Fire Emblem Awakening : 91 MC
Fire Emblem Fates Conquest : 87 MC
Fire Emblem Gates : Birthright 86 MC
Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia : 81 MC
Fire Emblem Three Houses : 89 MC

I just can't see Engage being low 80

The Echoes MC score has always been a bit of a headscratcher for me. It's an 84 on OC, which has more reviews logged too.

Fire Emblem lives in the mid 80s to low 90s range, and unless something significant is changed it ain't leaving anytime soon.

The Echoes score makes sense to me personally. It’s not a very fun game to play, map design is very weak, repetitive dungeons gameplay, skirmishes that don’t work well and the gameplay mechanics aren’t expansive enough. While simpler, it made the game “slower” to complete fights.

But it also on 3DS and there was this strange aura of “should’v been on switch, this device sucks completely now” online both in media and forums (some won’t admit it but some Nintendo fans got really upset as Nintendo trying to keep 3DS alive).

Positives were
-music
-art style (like characters and art, but the game looked ugly, very brown most of the time)
-first title with full Voice Acting.
-solid all around game.

Interesting to think about, no Avatar and and no romance (paring) aspect either. Supports were very limited as well. Main story is a love story as well, so if you didn’t care either character, you might’ve had issues with the story. Granted the story itself isn’t that good either, but voice acting helped a lot in some areas

All and all. Impressive remake of a NES title to a more modern style. But barely improving gameplay and map design hurt a lot. And somewhat unfairly treated for being a 3DS title by a few individuals, but I like to think reviewers didn’t point it for it being on switch.

Should clarify that my problem isn't really with the score itself, it's that the score is 3 points lower than the more trustworthy and open (heh) aggregator in OpenCritic. MC scores have always been a bit funky, and Echoes is one of the stranger ones.

I mostly bring it up because it's the only MC score to not fall in the mid-80s range, but considering that it's an 84 on OC, it isn't really much of an outlier compared to other modern FE titles when it comes to review scores.

The game echoes was a remake of was the black sheep game of the franchise. There was only so much makeup you could put on the pig.

It was never fair to call that game a black sheep. Gaiden was unpolished, but it had plenty of great concepts and ideas that just didn't immediately get revisited.

I can’t believe Echoes is 81. I prefer it to TH tbh (I played Fates, TH and Echoes)

Yeah, I remember this. Discussing late 3DS games on early Era / late Gaf was impossible without loads of "why isn't this on Switch???" "let 3DS die already, Nintendo!!!" posts.

A shame, because some of the best games on the platform were released in 2017-2019.

Holy shit, that Engage banner in Heroes is bad.

Color sharing (two blue orb heroes), no 4* demote, no colorless orb hero at all, making this Alfred a Rearmed Hero which is normally only for Heroes OCs or fav heroes from past games.
While some of the skills themselves are good, they're partially ultra powercreepy, especially Alear's B-skill.

Alfred almost overshadows Alear, the Lord character of Engage, due to his weapon, because arcane weapons are really strong, he doesn't disappear if you use him for skill inheritance and because he has a exclusive unique A-skill that is pretty nuts.
But because you shouldn't overshadow your Lord character on their very own banner, they made Alear pretty broken and a rather big powercreep on other sword characters.

Male Alear completely missing ... IS, it's good that you've understood that an Avatar / Lord protagonist should be available male and female, but you can't just ignore one of them in Heroes.

Now for that "bonus" for getting Engage in Heroes ... laughably. 5 Orbs is one single pull. Three Houses bonus gave you a free Byleth. What is this shit?

The Engage bonus for playing Heroes on the other hand is way better. While having Alfonse, Sharena and Heroes Anna as Emblem Rings would be cooler, those Bond Rings are at least useful ... i hope.

So, rant over.

My Divine Edition from the My Nintendo Store shows up as dispatched on my order history, so i guess i could get the game early!

....

Bah, rant not over ... boy ... how could Engage's addition to Heroes be so bad.

Totally, there were stacks of great releases at the end of the 3DS’s lifespan. I remember this argument being particularly annoying when Samus Returns came out. Presumably because early adopters had finished the early big Switch releases and were wanting directs to focus entirely on it.

Im really curious to see what people make of it, it seems like it’s got something for everyone for me, in that it’s got a ton of customisation and downtime activities but a bit more streamlined than TH, which was a fair criticism of it, particularly in the back half. I guess people that preferred the sheer darkness and shades of grey and faction politics of TH might dislike the more brightly coloured, Saturday-morning-cartoon look?

Personally, I find it refreshing- usually I’d lean closer to what TH did in terms of story and characterisation, but after playing through one heartbreaking decision after another in Triangle Strategy, I’m up for something more upbeat and clearly good v evil here. Sometimes I just want to rally good people and go mess up the bad guys. It’s a bit like D&D really, for every campaign I play where every decision is gutwrenching, it’s nice to play another where we are kicking in dungeon doors and fighting monsters without needing to unpack the nuance every time.

Looks like, similarly to 3H, being connected to the internet (and presumably having the online sub?) adds items throughout maps that you can pick up. Unlike 3H though, which iirc showed deployed rankings for each month, it seems like this game has deployed rankings for each individual chapter, which is pretty cool! What's even cooler is that, looking at the scroll bar on the right, it seems like it shows the placement for every playable character rather than just the top 8?

Looking through some of the leaks.
Looks like the the theory on three additional playable characters was correct. I like the look of the woman, Saphir. Seems like she and the priest will join later, probably as some traditional "late game units in case you killed everyone".

Edit : last message was posted twice, so enjoy some good FE music while waiting for the reviews (mods can obviously delete this message if they wanna)

I also like that it'll seemingly show rankings both by character and by character with Emblem.

Echoes probably deserved being around 80, the map design sucked. It looked and sounded great, and the story was appropriately brought up to modern standards unlike the downright terrible remake of Shadow Dragon, but when the actual maps which make up all the gameplay are easily the worst in the series...

Will people really go crazy if the game score marginally lower than Three Houses (which will probably happen anyway) ?
People will go crazy if the reviews are higher, lower, or the same as Three Houses. You think people will go crazy if this game scores lower then 3H? Imagine the people who've been round the clock bitching about the "weebification of FE" if this game ends up the best reviewed game in the series.

You can complain about male Alear missing in Heroes, but even when Three Houses content first came to FEH, male Byleth debuted well before female Byleth, and the only bonus you got in either Three Houses or FEH when linking them was the debut male Byleth unit as a free gift. (So honestly, Engage's bonuses are a step up given TH bonuses were a fat nothing.)

Male Alear will probably show up in a banner in the next month or so.

When Echoes released Alm was in the first Heroes banner, with Celica releasing in a different banner shortly after. I don't think it's too big of a deal to have to wait for the other Alear.

Huh? FByleth came 4 days before TH console release date with the first TH banner. MByleth was first only via the Three Houses promotion where you needed to unlock the Gold Points from purchase, and followed ~ a week after FByleth banner with the legendary heroes banner of that month.

Even if we only count the banner releases, that was only 9 days in between. But you could get him earlier than those 9 days via the promotion.

Also, i didn't really complain about Heroes bonuses in Engage, i complained about the Engage bonus in Heroes. We're going from a free 5* hero to 5 orbs, which is a single pull. If you get a 5* with those 5 orbs, grats, but if not (which is more likely) it's absolutely a worse bonus.

Ah, my mistake. It's been a while.

Seems like the game is starting to get datamined now too? For anyone who wants to remain completely spoiler free, be aware.

Some light stuff in regards to romance though:
You can, Alear has S supports. Seems like some of the underage ones are platonic, like Hortensia , Anna, and Jean. Alear is apparently 17, and most of the cast is in that age range, so I don't really know if the platonic S supports is only the obvious children or if it extends to anyone who's also 16ish. Have to imagine the older characters are also platonic too.

Also, Grandpa Vander is only 45 lmao

I mean

45 in anime age is like 90 in real world so it makes sense lol
