Has Square’s Switch support actually been that good?

Octopath
Dragon Quest XI
Bravely Default 2
Triangle Strategy

All of these have Nintendo listed as the publisher. What has Square actually put out on the system that Nintendo didn’t have a hand in? Retro ports of older Final Fantasy games?
Neo TWEWY, Trials of Mana, a bunch of DQ games, a bunch of ports, and those Tokyo RPG Factory games nobody remembers. Chocobo Racing as well. You're right in that only Asano and Hori want to grow an audience in the platform, but it could be worse.

Read more about Castlevania Bloodlines and that has shot up my to play list.
It seems exciting but also I’ve been playing it for a couple years already with the Castlevania Anniversary Collection

I understand. But you have to understand my situation too. I always have been a mainly handheld gamer, pixelated stuff were the everything I got. AAA 3D stuff is a rare sight for me and now Switch has the power of making it possible. I absolutely loved what I have tasted with DQ11 and Trials of Mana and now I want more. But I'm not sure if i'll get more.
Got you. DLSS will deliver us all ... maybe?

I don't even need that much. Square porting their PS3... hell even PS2 games would be enough for me. FF13 trilogy on the go is my true dream.
I’ve just about given up on getting FF13 on Switch. I’ve considered getting a Steam Deck just so I could play FF13 portably.

This and Disgaea 6 are sooo weird to me. Like, hey, I couldn't care less if they're on PS or not (I only want more Ys anyways, lol), but I'd love to know the reasons for doing it like that. Like, were PS4 sales as of late that bad ww?

this was the first new disgaea in so many years. one platform had a thriving rpg space and the other's had slid into relative obscurity. switch normally does 2-3 times as well as your ps4 version. ps5 is the new shiny which makes it hard for ps4 games to stand out unless there's a ps5 version. sony's not going to promote a niche third-party ps4-only game in a ps5 world. they're definitely not going to give it any mind if it's also multiplatform with their strongest competitor. nintendo wouldn't support a multiplatform game the same way either. so, it's exclusive to the west, gets in a nintendo direct, gets some ads, and has presence in more retailers as a download card you can buy off the shelf at places like target.

meanwhile the playstation fanbase gets to stew over it for a while until the inevitable ps5 version releases and they can really ramp up the concern trolling over switch performance issues and espouse the virtues of the best platform, and pc fans chuckle pcily at the chaos until they run into crashes and bugs on steam. and through it all, people are talking about disgaea 6 since 2020 and what it means for such-and-such and keeping it in conversation and awareness up for it in a way they wouldn't have done for any ol' mid-70s metascore multiplatform game.

LOL I was about to say "don't forget the Tokyo RPG Factory games!" because I was so jazzed for each of them that I imported the physical editions from Japan so I could have them in my collection. So I remember them, at the very least. 😅

You’d still have to port the games to the system.

Honestly I feel a switch successor, even if it’s as powerful as a PS4, companies will continue to move the goal posts and say it’s not good enough and continue to ignore the platform.

The fact that we didn’t get a big wave of AAA ps3 and Xbox 360 games ported over will go down in history as one the biggest missed opportunities when it comes to the Switch’s library. We got some stuff but arguably we coulda had more.

How hard is Death's Door? I don't enjoy difficult games anymore. I don't mind a challenge obviously but these unforgiving difficulties just discourage me from even finishing. Like for example I enjoyed Dread's difficulty level but absolutely hated Hollow Knight's difficulty.

I’m kind of surprised that you found Dread less difficult than Hollow Knight — at least not including all the optional content. Maybe I’m just stronger at slashy things than shooty things.

After playing four times, I can say that I love Metroid Dread. It exceeded my expectations by a lot.

Nos I hope Nintendo decide to make a Super Metroid remake/remaster with Dread graphics and controls.

Yep, me too. I was completely against the idea of a Super remake, but after Dread I’m all for it. Hell yeah, give us Super in the style of Dread!

That feeling when someone completely new joins your NSO family plan that you have with friends and you then realize that this new person is actually a friend from high school that you completely forgot existed for the past 15 years...

Hard to think about, that's a mighty specific feeling. Gooooooooood? ? ???

It is a weird feeling bumping into someone you had completely forgotten about even though it was someone you hung out regularly back in the day. And I mean completely forgotten about. When I thought back to high school, I could remember all sorts of people even if I never really interacted with them. But this guy completely left my brain until my friend mentioned his name a few hours ago.

I've done multiple playthroughs of both games and absolutely adore both games and I can very much confirm that for me too Hollow Knight was significantly more difficult than Dread.

Like, an order of magnitude of difference.

I kept dying, no map because I kept dying and couldn't afford to buy one, and nothing looked familiar so I had no clue if I had been there before or not. I ended up playing over 20 hours but since I kept dying and making no progress I deleted the game from my Switch. And since it seems like the devs aren't fixing my issues with the game in Silk Song I am not going to buy it when it releases. Everyone says I should just memorize the map but I can't.

Well i just finished Metroid Prime 2 and...
Hmmmm i liked it but ultimately Prime 2 i think its a step down from Prime 1 sadly. In some ways its very ambitious and i really like its setting, its story, its atmosphere and damn the music is a BANGER. But dang half the boss battles are an exercise in frustration, the underwater sections of torvus bog is a slog, Dark Aether can be outright MEAN to traverse depending on where (yes i know its meant to be like this but...it didnt make it more fun knowing that) and some of the spiderball puzzles are .The bosses especially it was clear they wanted to make it more unique compared to prime 1 but man it was very hit or miss. The best boss battles were the 4 Dark Samus fights and Emperor ing. I know there are people who place Prime 2 as the best in the trilogy. People like its atmosphere, the oppressive environment of the dark world and the exploration and like the more challenging difficulty compared to Prime 1. In terms of exploration it really is top tier, i had fun finding things.
But for me? It didnt win me over, not a fan of being dicked over like that, difficult games arent my thing. I liked Prime 1 cuz it was engaging . I also disliked the hint system in prime 2 wasnt as good as Prime 1 on where to go next bleh

Good game but not Metroid's best imo. Id rank it like this. Just Above Super Metroid in the B tier
But below Fusion , Zero Mission , Prime 1 and Dread. Mind you a B tier Metroid game is still amazing
Its just like the Zelda series, even the worst are better than lot of other games

I dont regret playing, i can see why people love it more than me.

Hollow Knight kicked my ass to a degree where I was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish it. There were two bosses at least that were total stopped-in-my-tracks points where it took me days to get past them. My reactions to the patterns just weren't gud enough or something. Dread, however, was a joy. Whenever I died I saw why, and could correct. Hollow Knight just felt like being punished and not knowing what I did wrong (though I do love Hollow Knight overall).

Yes!! Same here! I used to be in the "Super is perfect, no touchie" camp but.. I think the things about Dread that underwhelmed me did so because I was waiting for Super-like moments that didn't come (because obviously Dread was its own thing and that's good). But it felt so damn good to play that I think, maybe what I wanted actually was a newer, flashier Super Metroid? So I'm totally down for Mercury Steam to do a SM remake now. Use Dread as a base, and just do it, guys.

and treat your employees a bit better this time kthxbai

here's a sentence I'm a bit too old to say: I just finished watching gravity falls for the first time

I'm gonna go cry on the shower floor
You're never too old for Gravity Falls. I didn't see it till I was like 32-33. Blew me away. I still quote it sometimes.

Now go watch Over the Garden Wall and report back.

Surprised to see the SMT V trailer not have much spoilers in it. Usually, Atlus spoils a lot when the game get's closer to release.

The boss "Inviso" ain't so invisible anymore from Yoshi's Story. An entire boss's whole gimmick gone because this was rushed out the door. If it's not clear, you're not supposed to see Inviso at all but a subtle motion blur effect in the background. The NSO version is clearly broken, where you see a sharp outline and the birds and background art being magnified through him. Hopefully Nintendo can fix all these issues in a patch out soon.

Yeah, HK is far harder than Dread. Like, it's not even marginally close honestly. The hardest boss of Dread is about as hard as a mid-level HK boss to me. Specifically

The hardest fight in Dread for me was the first dual Chozo Robot fight (Raven Beak honestly wasn't even that bad) which I'd say is about on par with the Mantis Lords, which I'd consider one of the medium difficulty boss fights in HK

Obviously it'll differ based on how much you jive with either games' gameplay but I think the majority would probably agree on HK being harder.

Oops! Haven’t been on all day. What’s up!! What did I miss!!! I’ll check the replies in the morning. Good night, friends!!!!!!!!!

Random question, but has there been any developments regarding removing the borders around NSO games? With the OLED model those static icons and text would make their online service a complete nonstarter for me.

Morning, Fami! The GotY just got a Demo, which makes me happy for people who are on the fence about it.

Everyone needs to play Dread.

You've been able to remove the text for years.

The borders, no. But they're not a particularly bright grey; I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm happy with SE's output on Switch but...

games like Final Fantasy XIII and Star Ocean 4&5 were developed on platforms less powerful than Switch lol

The Switch is just too underpowered for Square Enix’s games. You need a real powerhouse system for native Kingdom Heart games like a 3DS for example.

Huh, they really rebuilt Pokémon Café Mix. The puzzle mechanics are still the same but they reworked the progression by quite a bit.

I was scrolling Nintendo's website and the homepage is:

Sora in Smash
New 2D Metroid
SMT having a worldwide launch
Gen 4 remake

All in the same page

Just to chime in on the NSO discussion on page 211:
  • I immediatly felt higher input latency in NES/SNES games compared to original hardware and Wii VC and it drove me nuts. And I'm not even a speedrunner
  • A high inout latency can make a game not enjoyable for some people. If I would have a few frames of latency on a game like OoT which runs with 20fps I would hate every section with aiming.
  • If you have no problem at all, great. But for others it is a problem and not acceptable to pay for that. And it annoys me personally when a problem gets talked down. Same with the shit that is Splatoon 2s netcode. Without adressing problems and being loud about it, nothing will change.
  • But dogpiling someone who still enjoys it is stupid as hell. Disagree with them, but don't shit on them (unless it's about Other M, then bombs away)

Ahh...I see. Yeah, the game essentially tries to keep you moving forward without giving you much room to backtrack until like near the end of the game. I believe there should be an area where you need to use the morph ball bomb within those launchers you can access in your morph ball form. I'm sure you've seen them around, perhaps taking a look in your map for them could help

I'm going to go against some of the praise I've seen of Dread and say that it does have a couple 'how the hell was I supposed to know that' moments, other than just shoot every block in the room.
Sorry for quoting from dozens of pages ago, but thank you for the responses! I think I’ve figured out how to get going again.

Eurogamer are pretty positive on Dungeon Encounters.

This might go on the list, though I'll be keeping purchases to a minimum while I make my way through more of the NSO games and while I wait for No More Heroes 3 and Shin Megami Tensei V to arrive.

I like it. I shared my thoughts on it here a couple of days ago. I was mainly interested in it because some key people who worked on FF12 worked on this as well.

On an unrelated note, I've been playing Dungeon Encounters the last couple of days and I like it a lot. It's a very divisive game by nature, with it being a barebones JRPG with no story, no character interaction and no NPCs outside of shops. The whole experience really is stripped to the bare minimum in terms of presentation, with the focus entirely on exploring a grid based dungeon and of course the turn based ATB combat.

Outside of the oddball characters, you can pretty much tune every character to your liking. Every one of them has two weapon slots, two armor slots and one accessory slot. There is no mana system for the spells, and they only differ in fixed or fluctuating damage output and single- or multi-target spells. No elemental damage either. You are only limited in what you want to equip your characters with based on PP. No healing/res spells, either, though you can unlock them as abilities with limited uses. You can not use those outside of battle, however.

What is there, is really solid, though. It starts out very simplistic at first but gets more and more complex the deeper you go. The combat is fun, and as a sucker for turn based combat who doesn't always have the time or commitment to play an RPG with actual, you know, story and character development, this scratches the itch nicely.
