Film looks super fun. The first one in years that will bring me to visit the cinema.

That said. Super Mario has a lot of potential for sequels. Theres a lot of characters and places to visit. Bowser Jr, Koopalings, Wario and Waluigi, Rosalina, Daisy and Captain Toad are no brainers. There are also other villains like Wart, Tatanga, Shadow Queen and so on.

I just realized the combination of this movie releasing later in the US than most of the world, and social media being what it is, I’ll likely have seen like 90% of this movie before it even hits the theaters here.

Really? Oh great.

Edit: almost two weeks in some places? AHHG Why?

I am very excited to see what the sequel (there will SO be a sequel) will be about. As in, proper sequel, not DK spinoff, which is rumored.
I suspect at least 2 big new character(groups) will appear. One that is more plot-related, and one that is more just to be there.
Like, I could see the sequel be about Rosalina, Bowser now attempting to take over Space instead. While Wario and Waluigi appears to be sorta pests-turning-good-guys over the course of the movie.
Or
Bowser Jr arrives, having been away for a while while Bowser was trying to take over the world. Stuff happens and Bowser for some reason says that Peach is his mother, and Jr now wants to meet her. Bowser reluctantly goes along and kidnaps Peach but accidentally kidnaps Daisy instead, not realizing until Daisy is in Bowser's Castle. Hijinx ensues as Daisy is too much to handle, and Daisy and Bowser Jr totally bonds over being chaotic people.
Oooor
Mario Kart-based Sequel and Bowser joins the races but attempts to sabotauge things, while Wario and Waluigi and Daisy just appears simply.

I feel like the sequel pipeline is Super Mario Bros. Movie -> Donkey Kong -> Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 -> Luigi’s Mansion. The latter two could be shuffled, and I’m expecting the sequel to be Galaxy focused.

and here’s the last piece missing to confirm what we all knew.

It really is supposed to be Lumalee.

Really liking that the text explicitly say "The 8 toys from the new Super Mario Bros. movie arrived on the Happy Meal!"; We are not erasing history! Good stuff McDonald's Brazil!

Surprised we didn't see a thread bump for this...

We have a new clip - part of this we've seen before, but we get an extended look at Toad Town as Mario and Toad make their way to Peach's Castle. There's a lot of details and references strewn about, and the music absolutely carries this scene. If the rest of the soundtrack has this much reverence and joy towards the game material, then it'll be a treat to listen to both in and out of the movie.

The music being true to the games is joyful, as are all the little nods and jokes, but the most positive element in that clip to me is seeing that the movie seems to have gotten Mario's character right after all. There are many little moments of compassion and joy (and even annoyance when Toad pushes the crowd around on his behalf!) that just feels like Mario, despite Pratt's weak acting.

That looks so good! Love the music, id love to explore a bustling toad town like that in a game

i couldn't tell it was Pratt actually, he sounded legit like someone from Brooklyn.
Agree the musical cues and nods to Mario games are great. I love the animation and the facial expressions

I still think that it's missing the whimsy and wonder that I tend to associate with Mario (I would assume that's meant to be his character arc, besides him just becoming more of a hero?), but it's certainly the closest that the movie has shown thus far. I'm curious to see how it ends up showing in the less bustling or comedy oriented scenes, because I think that will be key ultimately. If they can nail those scenes, then we can have a decent Mario...besides the Chris Pratt voice, because it still isn't doing much for me.

The musical arrangements are so good! Really impressed by how they've managed to pack classic Mario tunes into this without it feeling out of place.

So at 0:41 Mario does the 3D World run and I appreciate that

Obviously all the musical cues and sound effects are great, I totally agree with everything VolcanicDynamo said

1:03 Pratt almost makes a Martinet sound

1:21 Did that whole musical bit end on a NSMB "bah?"

And the only thing I don't like is the big smash pan to Peach's castle at the end. Like, they shoulda treated that building with reverence and wonder, not.. a fast pan into pow now it's in frame! sorta thing. Seems more like the camera move modern animated films use to punctuate a punchline, not a grand reveal. Kinda threw me, but everything else was sooooooooo good

Mario: "so these bricks are just floating here?"

I wonder how close to reality the "Brooklyn" the Mario Bros come from is going to be? Are we going to have a scene where Mario is surprised he can triple jump in the Mushroom Kingdom? Or is just that people in Brooklyn can do it, they just don't think about it?

God I'm so glad that awful Trailer Music (tm) is gone. This sounds lovely! Not completely sold on the film personally ("so these bricks just float here okay wink wink nudge" groan), but for a wider audience it's probably going to be nice.

Also happy they seemingly didn't went with another Peach kidnapping plot.

I think that there has to be a level of leeway in how excitable he is since the character is, after all, new to an absurd world that flies in the face of logic, specially since there are these platforming elements in the clip ( we know falling off the platform means you die in a Mario game ) so I think those moments of wariness are justified. The story would, I think, seem a bit off if he just accepted all of this weird world without blinking since the major driving threat and motivation is that he is worried for Luigi, so if he found all of this instantly amazing and easy then this strange new world seems a bit less strange and a bit less new.

If this is a "Mario Begins" deal I think what they're going for here works, wouldn't in a vaccuum (like the trailer made it look like), but after seeing this new clip that shows the character's benevolent streak in all of his little animations and posture I think it works well.

Illumination put the clip on their YT channel. I hope they regional branches follow with translated clips. i need to see this with the german VAs, who're (imo) doing a surprisingly good job going by the two trailers so far.

I wonder if in the second movie his gained skills will be visualized by him having ass

Does anyone have that size chart of the characters? I think the link got taken down.

I found this one, but it's low res. Not sure if the original was the same.

Is each line supposed to represent a foot in imperial height? So Mario is 6' with his hat, Luigi is 6'5" with his had and Peach is 7' tall without her crown?

Dang.

Wait holy shit

Imagine a Larry King-like Kong interviewing a celebrity Donkey Kong for like a solid 2-minute scene of the movie
Larry Kong interviewing Candy Kong, voiced by Paris Hilton
So now will this get an official soundtrack release? Surely it will, right?
I am salivating at the prospect of a special edition vinyl record

Glad to see confirmation the movie will be dubbed in Italian

You know.. besides Pratt's flat performance, I think they're going for something closer to DiC's Mario and Bob Hoskins portrayal as well; which is weird in this day and age, but I welcome!

But I'm sure they'll become closer to the Mario of the games eventually

It kinda sounds like some of the Toads in the TGA clip are voiced by Samantha Kelly - particularly the one that says "Morning!" to Key's Toad.

Would be a nice touch. For all the talk about Martinet, it'd be cool if the other long-time VAs had small roles as well.

The music is just the icing on the cake honestly. I'm not watching any more footage, this movie is going to be a treat

I like how Mario gives the coin to the Toad, and tips his hat. Very Marioesque

I've watched the clip from TGA a few times and the animation on Mario looks really natural now, like there was that slight uncanny feeling in the initial still frames and whatnot but it seems to look really good in motion.

Oh wow the Crazy Cap store made it into the film:

Probably just one of the many other references in the film, but now I really want to see Pratt Mario in different outfits.

I hope the whole movie isn't scored like that single scene. It's refreshing compared to Sonic's movies but a constant medley of recognisable Mario themes all the time would be too much. I think the Super Mario World overworld theme strikes me as the most unnecessary of the bunch; because if you really need a game music cue for the clear pipes wouldn't a Super Mario 3D World track at least have relevance to what is happening? Still appreciated, again, compared to the Sonic films having a single game song each.

On a totally different note, one reference in the scene that is absoluely going to fly past most is the purple Toad named Chanterelle; named after the Paper Mario character. No unique design though... but this is an origin story for Mario after all, so hey, maybe she transformed herself later in life?
