Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

Interesting, since you mentioned 'small distance warp' I was actually thinking the Torii gates on the Sky Islands could possibly be warp points, either between islands or - for some select ones - some alternate area.

When looking through key art and screenshots all the gates seem to be on the 'edge' of an Island, technically entrances to nowhere. My initial guess was you'd jump off and paraglide through them, but I think simply walking through the gate could be enough to activate traversal.

The patent does describe 'warp points' and has diagrams showing the instantaneous change, in these examples the star symbols are warp points.

FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 show examples of game screens before and after the instantaneous movement. In FIG. 4, the first warp point 103 is displayed obliquely at the right front as seen from the player object 101. Further, the sound source 102 is displayed at a position which is also obliquely at the right front as seen from the player object 101 and is farther than the first warp point 103. In addition, the second warp point 104 is displayed backward of the sound source 102.

Of course it also could be describing a different instant warp system, might even be another arm ability, but using the Torii gates would be fun. I can imagine walking through one and seamlessly ending up in another island, like Portal.

Time to dig into this patent, I will eat up any morsel relating to this game lol

So what do we actually do on the sky islands? A lot of the islands are pretty small, and we've only seen a couple of islands big enough to hold towns/dungeons. How do we get from one island to the next anyways? Are Loftwings back?

this one on the right looks the size of great plateau, the small ones must be like skyward sword island with one puzzle or the equivalent of shrines

That's one of the only two big islands we've seen so far (the other being that snow island). Maybe there's more hiding above the clouds?

Ok, does anyone else think that if you flip the giant island upside down, you'll get a small city? Not in terms of size, but then there will be a bunch of tall structures.

I wonder if that part that sticks out a lot on the left on that big island could somehow relate to a Hylia statue, similar to how the Hylia statue in skyloft had a large "bottom" (will keep it at that to avoid potential spoilers for SS lol)

Skyloft is 100% going to be in this game lol. It's probably why Skyward Sword got ported. Maybe that's where you fix the Master Sword?

You’ll probably just activate those gates on specific islands to turn into warp points so you don’t have to keep flying to them.

We need cool bosses and minibosses like this thing in TotK, camera is bad don't get motion sick.

Man the modding community really went nuts after Ocarina of Time was decompiled and the native PC version was released.

But every single custom bosses/dungeons I have seen so far are edgy shit. Can't believe people want Zelda to be this dark, still.

Well we know TotK won't be like MM, but if there's underground dungeons, I hope there's one similar to the Shadow Temple.

I have to say I'm one of those. I'm not that into dark stuff but there's something about how Zelda handle those themes that really works for me. They really know how to balance with the more light hearted sections. One of the reasons oot, mm and tp are the pinnacle of the series for me.

Though stuff that is dark all the time like Dark Souls have limited effect on me. Too oppressive and stressful for my taste.

Speaking of hot Link, I am surprised how little his new outfit was shown in the latest trailer, especially when it was so prominent in other footage. I thought for sure he would be wearing the outfit on the boxart but he's just wearing his Champion's tunic. Presumably the new outfit has some story significance. As to why it's not featured on the boxart, maybe Nintendo just thinks the blue tunic is more iconic and now represents the Breath of the Wild storyline of the Zelda franchise.

The Champion's tunic seems to be the new go-to equivalent of a green tunic for Link. Maybe the green sky outfit will have its uses, but the new Champion's tunic could remain the stapled outfit.

Why am I only noticing now that the Master Sword isn't just glowing, here, it's pulsating. It's trying to communicate with Link. Half the blade is gone, and Fi is still trying to reach out.

It's because your eyes were so focused on hot Link

I think Fi will actually play a role, beyond from just memory cutscenes in BOTW, in TotK. I wonder if she’ll just pulse glow or if they’ll do anything further.

That secret cutscene memory where Fi glows and tells Zelda that Link can still be saved definitely made that memory my favourite one.

I jumped out of my seat shouting when they play the few notes of Fi's theme during that scene. I did not expect Nintendo to be so overt with connections to past games in BOTW.

Asking just in case, is it okay to post a tweet of an absolutely amazing fan artwork of Tears of the Kingdom here if the artist also has NSFW content if you browse through their profile? The tweet / fanart itself is completely safe for work and so good it'd be a shame not to share, but I'm not sure if it would go against Fami's no-nsfw rule or not?

Has anyone done an analysis on what weapons Link has equipped in all of the scenes we have so far? Has it just been the master sword and then that one bone axe?

In the 2021 trailer, Link can be seen with a bow and I think a generic looking sword.

I can't see why that wouldn't be allowed. You're posting fan art and not the nfsw art

Okay thanks!

Here's a really great Tears of the Kingdom / Link fanart:
Just as a warning, the artist has NSFW content if you click on their profile (in case their username isn't obvious enough), but the art in this one tweet is completely safe! (even if it says "potentially sensitive content", that's just automatic for all of their tweets)

Okay thanks!

CSR loves him some Nintendo waifus. He's gonna have a field day with TotK

Pretending to see erotic stuff to avoid people at work discovering that I enjoy good Zelda fan art.

When do you think is the next Time we are gonna see Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?
I was just looking into what happened before BOTW and then I remembered we got that 4 minute trailer, actually video release by Nintendo, of just the dynamic weather system in BOTW in October 2016, So I was thinking, actually hoping, that maybe we get another one. Perhaps this time of Link just chillin on a really high sky island looking down at Hyrule watching the clouds pass by and thunderstorms forming. That was 4-5 months out from release but before the game awards trailer in 2016. So it’s anyones guess but I’ll take anything at this point, just throw link in a dark cave and let me listen to all the creepy music and sounds and I would be happy.

I was wondering that too, it almost looks like one of the elevators leading down from the shrines, like its been ripped out of the ground and stuck on the edge of the island.

Well said, I had this in mind as well since the 2021 teaser. There's so many of them, they look so much alike, and jumping from island to island "manually" would get old real fast with how small most islands are. It could also be a great way to connect Underworld, Overworld and Skyworld (if technology allows).

Also yeah, the latest teaser opening of that shot of Link running towards a gate and then quickly cutting away is suspicious =P . It sure looks like the opening area of the game to me, with a Gate to teach you the warping basics!

Secretly I'm hoping that passing through a gate will allow you to enter a ghostly plane that connects the islands, but I'm not sure if they'd go that far =P . Nearing a Tori gate and getting a peek into a distant land that you can then enter would be fantasy AF either way, and I'm all for it.

This sounds amazing 🀀

Thats what i wanted to see when the decompilation was complete. Change every asset with a new one, so that its essentially legal software, and have really fun and great ned zelda games in that style.

Yeah...you new to the zelda fandome? that was the big group that was against wind waker, and that then moved on to Dark Souls calling it "the true zelda successor".
I love when zelda gets dark... but thats mostly N64 Zelda and BotW. The GC/Wii ones did not work for me on the dark/edge factor. Not at all.
N64s dungeons can be so opressing with its atmosphere. MM can we wicked and weird, while having more sadness in its quiet moments. TP just kinda lacked in this.

And while i find it sad that most fan creatings go even more into the edge, i miss seing good less edgy, more mystical, fun, etc stuff to balance it out.

Yeah, just bleak and dark all the time lessens the inpact for me to.

I watched Zeltik's and I agree that many of the islands in the trailers seem way high up and I also agree that a goal will be to get to the top. Going off the theory that Link will have to raise fallen pieces of the sky island, maybe the story is that Ganondorf is somehow bringing down this sky kingdom. It's breaking into pieces with many collapsing the surface while others remain hovering at lower elevations. Not only do you have to raise pieces that have fallen on the surface, but you'll need to raise entire islands, returning them to higher elevations. Eventually, you'll reassemble the entire kingdom and finally make it to the top.

And this is just my theory, but while you are ascending the sky islands, Link (or maybe Zelda) will need to descend below the earth to stop the flows of malice. For example, you descend below and find the source of the malice flow at Death Mountain. You defeat a boss and/or complete a dungeon and the flow stops. You'll need to descend lower and lower to get at the main source. So beginning at the Hyrule we know, the player will have two diverging journeys, ascending up into the skies and descending down below the depths.

Do you think that it's a good idea to play BOTW now again? Have over 200 hours in it but I assume it's better to wait when ToTK drops since the same places on the map appears to be the same.
Thought the same question two days ago and I decided I'm gonna try holding off on playing it again so that when I see TOTK's world I come into it thinking most of it looks new because a.) it probably is something new or b.) I've forgotten about some places in the first game. Though I do hope its the former and that the world does have a lot of new additions to freshen up the experience when not being in the skies.

Oh you <3.

I mean.... a bird told me that it'll be up tomorrow!
Your video about the 2021 trailer theme being a continuation of BotW's main theme continues to resonate with this Ouroboros imagery. Also it made it fun to relisten to the original BotW theme and hear the TotK theme in there.

I'm looking forward to an analysis of this teaser's theme. There's obvious symbolism with the rising piano notes representing Link's ascension to the Sky, the way the song is composed it seems like it could keep going forever.

Then there's the section where Link opens the door which has a similar emotional quality when played backwards. It's not palindromic note for note, but I definitely want to know why my ears perk up when listening to it.

(These are all off-the-cuff, potentially hallucinatory observations. I defer to you for the answers)
