I think that Nintendo just doesn't feel like it's necessary to do Gameboy stuff right now. They must be satisfied with the numbers and reception to N64 and don't see the need to add another console to the service right now.

They must be confident that enough people will renew/maintain their subscriptions to the expansion pass. Maybe they won't add Gameboy stuff until that N64 well dries up.

Ugh, Nintendo Store fucked up my address when I put it in and there's no edit option on the order. What a crap website.

Why are you thanking me for noticing yourself that it's back in stock in the UK? ^^
I wouldn't have looked again without the notice - I get a lot of brain fog so my memory is useless. Checking the German store made me double-check the UK. Need to bug them to make sure they get my delivery address right, though.

I just wish the subscription service and pay-per-game model could coexist.

I know why they don't. But it'd be nice. I like that I have access to a library with a fee but I do want to actually own Super Metroid on Switch and have it still be on the SD card years later. Sigh.
That would be nice for third party stuff - though I guess there's absolutely no reason a company like Capcom or Square couldn't dump their old games on the eShop if they wanted to. They must have just almost collectively decided that doing collections and remasters is more profitable.

Alright, draft 1 is done! Lemee know what ya'll think before I publish it!

Watching it a few more times I think the opening is much too slow before the title, gonna see if I can change that a bit then reupload.
hell yeeeeeeeeeah

I don’t know how much feedback you’re looking for — but in general, I would recommend tightening up some of the cuts. nothing wrong with a lingering shot, but some of the cadence doesn’t feel as… lyrical? as it could. doesn’t arc for as much punch.

the angle on the fairies + bear shot is a little too skewed, too — everything else has a good visual read, but that shot may be slightly too oblique

the “gameplay” title seems unnecessary, and also like it’s running away oh no goodbye! same with “coming eventually” — combining it with the baller FREE DEMO title might hit a little harder

if you have access to music editing, even if it’s not your wheelhouse, I’d recommend adding even just a kick and snare ongoingly to make the loops feel like they build

ALL THAT SAID

I love seeing so much of the game though, it’s very exciting and interesting!! there’s so much of it!! I’m still on one or two patches of grass!!

so hell fuckin’ yeah!!!

So, uh, friends, I know we are all having good fun here and all but could we close the forum or at least this thread for a few days so we can mourn the fact that Roger Federer is retiring ?

hell yeeeeeeeeeah
First off, thank you for the feedback! I always want feedback, it's what I crave, it keeps me going and wanting to improve.

Yes, this was something I was struggling with. The program I'm using is literally the one coming preinstalled with Windows 11 and it uses a slider to manage trims and cuts, making it almost impossible to get everything exactly where I want it to be in time with the music. But I said to myself, eh close enough.

Good to know. That one also had a super choppy framerate, I wasn't a huge fan of how it looked in that area. Might have to setup an entirely different shot.

I needed something to break up the two music tracks, and again this editor I'm using has very little in the way of features. I couldn't figure out a way to fade between shots or cards, so this was the tradeoff I came up with.
if you have access to music editing, even if it’s not your wheelhouse, I’d recommend adding even just a kick and snare ongoingly to make the loops feel like they build
Nope, these tracks were made by a friend of mine I think 6 years ago, I don't know shit about music editing. I played around with Fruityloops like, maybe 15-20 years ago? And didn't really accomplish much.

Thank you! I've been at this for like 7 months now so yeah I'm really glad I have this much to show for it. Makes it feel worthwhile, especially when I get comments like yours.

Scheduled a doctor’s appointment for 2 weeks from now because my meds are running out. Time to be anxious about it every day.

So, in addition to being FANCY and treating myself to the FE Engage special edition for January, I've decided to preorder Neir Automata, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and Bayonetta 3 for October. Still deciding what to do about Splatoon 3, but I don't think I'm getting anything in November or December (unless Pokemon, Harvestella, FF Crisis Core or Dragon Quest Treasures really suddenly take my fancy).

Assuming the full Rare lineup is added (except for the Mickey game), we should have stuff through mid-2024, barring Nintendo going crazy with 3rd party stuff. I still have faint hope that Nintendo is going to surprise us with the Gameboy/Gameboy Color stuff before this time next year, but who knows.

If we are really riding out with the current systems then I hope the Genesis will be getting more regular updates. We are going on almost three months since the last one.

I actually just cancelled my Sparks of Hope pre-order, even though it came with a $10 gift card. People have pointed out how quickly, dramatically and regularly Ubi games go on sale

But I have now pre-ordered Nier Automata, and I want to pre-order Persona 5 (although I'd prefer to do it at Best Buy, not GameStop which is shipping only)

tbh the main reason I kinda dread seeing GB/GBA NSO is because it might indicate that the N64 service won't be getting more games, at least regularly.

I just want:

Super Smash Bros.
Cruis'n USA and its sequels
Donkey Kong 64
Banjo-Tooie
Diddy Kong Racing
Blast Corps
Perfect Dark
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Jet Force Gemini
Killer Instinct Gold
Mischief Makers
Chameleon Twist and its sequel
Bomberman 64 and its sequel
Bomberman Hero

...man they still quite got a bit to go. Just gotta hope Nintendo's willing to keep playing ball with third parties because that's all that's basically left outside of Smash, DK64 and Cruis'n.

This is great, and it's cool to see how this is coming together after all the screenshots and puns! I echo most of what Sus replied with. I'd also add, depending on how easy it'd be to do: Is the tone of the game going to be fairly comedic, or at least have comedy touches like all the puns, etc.? I think that might be something to highlight a bit more if so. Watching this trailer made me think just how hard it would be to make one, since I knew you were talking about that. But I think it's a great first effort!

Oh I don’t think there is ANY way the Pokémon games don’t come to NSO. I highly doubt they’re going to package up a separate GB emulator for a la carte purchases anymore, when they can rope people who wanna relive their childhood into a yearly subscription.
Yeah this is one reason I honestly expect to see all GameBoy systems in the Expansion Pack. Retro Pokemon will be a lure for the higher priced subscription. You can start with gen 1, then do Yellow, then gen 2, follow up with Crystal, and you've still got gen 3, Emerald, and gen 1 remakes to someday offer through the GBA.

I've decided to get it soon because it'll at least be a little different, and I think I could do with New Mario vibes this winter. Splatoon 3 is super tempting not just because I like Splatoon, but also it'd be a break after months of Live Alive, Xenoblade and Sunbreak.

But there's so much still to do in the latter 2 I don't know how much I'll engage with Splatoon 3 for now...

Thanks!

Yeah it's definitely somewhat comedic but not really going for a "comedy game" if you know what I mean. More or less a light-hearted tone that doesn't take itself too seriously, but it still has a story to tell beyond all of the jokes and puns.

Most of the comedy (so far) is in the writing and enemy names, so I'm not sure how well that translates to a trailer like this. I was thinking of one particular NPC I could show off but it kinda interrupted the quick-pace flow of the trailer. Like you said, it's not easy to make these!

I had covid but I'm back now. Sup everybody
COVID bros unite.

COVID sucks, sorry you had it.

Awesome! Love how the lollipop monster or whatever made it in the trailer. There better be a way to lick it to death…

'Fraid not, at least not yet. Not for the Licked Lich either.

Maybe I'll have an "eat" or "bite" ability that doesn't really do much against most enemies but does tons of damage to them...

Well shit, big layoffs at Fanbyte Media. Both the EiC and Head of Media, as well as others, were let go out of nowhere:

One of the things I'd been wondering was whether we'd start to see a more aggressive release schedule from EPD whenever new hardware arrived. This fiscal year was presumably meant to have (and might still have) 3 EPD titles in the shape of Switch Sports, Splatoon 3, and the 1-2 Switch sequel. To me, that feels like what a standard EPD fiscal year should be like these days, though some years will be presumably have 2 to 3 bigger productions as opposed to 1 big production and 2 smaller titles. They managed that in 2019-20, arguably 2018-2019 if you count Labo as a series of smaller titles, but not in 2020-21 or the 2021-22 fiscal years. Obviously, 2017-18 was noticeably more active in terms of internal games.

That being said, the weird pace of EPD can be partially explained by the pandemic and projects simply not working - the aforementioned 1-2 Switch sequel seems to be a wet fart that Nintendo either clean up or incinerate behind closed doors, and Pikmin 4 is only launching eight years after Miyamoto described it as "nearing completion", suggesting that Emily was (yet again) on the ball by describing it as rebooted in 2019. But looking at what we know of, through hiring calls and certain staff being absent (I.e. Splatoon 2 level designers with 2D Mario experience not working on Splatoon 3), I'm wondering if the 2023-24 fiscal year - and perhaps the first part of the 24-25 fiscal year will be that more aggressive period from EPD (let's avoid 2017-2 memes, but I do wonder if generational transitions are going to be targeted as high-output periods for EPD's internal teams). Right now we have:

  • new Zelda (EPD 3 x Monolith Soft, May 2023)
  • new Pikmin (EPD 10 [+ Eighting?], 2023
  • delayed and or canned 1-2 Switch sequel (EPD 4)
  • 2D Mario (EPD 10)
  • 3D Mario (EPD 8)
  • 2D game (EPD 8 - odds are this is DK)
  • EPD 9 as a Mysterious and Unknowable Enigma outside of Kart content
  • EPD 4 presumably continuing to have a wide array of zany games in the works

I could see 2023-24 having Zelda to kick off in May, followed up with 2D Mario in the summer period (July?), Pikmin 4 and 3D Mario that winter, and something from EPD 4 as the March title to close the fisal year - potentially they take on Tomodachi Life and rework it somewhat so that there's more in the way of actual gameplay (but please keep the frankly unhinged vibe of the game - maybe even Grezzo join as a codeveloper after their work on Miitopia). Perhaps the reworked 1-2 Switch even appears as a budget release, so that 2023-24 and the presumed launch of new hardware is accompanied by a big string of hits and a similar number of EPD releases to 2017-18.

That leaves EPD 8's DK game as a 2024 title, presumably in the 24-25 fiscal year. I'd also guess we see DLC for Zelda, at the very least, but unless EPD expansion has really ramped up, 24/25 fiscal year presumably leans more on external subsidiaries and affiliates for games. The real question is whether Nintendo are going to continue to pace out their major internal games - in which case one mainline Mario series might not reappear until 2024 - or whether they're deliberately targeting the hardware transition as a period where EPD provides a splurge of games that are at their best on the new model to motivate the core fanbase to move over. There's the real question here of whether that's even necessary, given we're likely to see a notable cross-gen period and, perhaps, strong hardware sales even without exclusive blockbusters on a regular basis. Given Nintendo can't count on high end blockbusters from third parties to lift up the slack, though, and given their historic struggles with hardware transitions, I'm leaning more towards EPD having a noticeably bigger presence across spring 2023 to spring/summer 2024.

I agree with this except that 2D and 3D Mario in the same year seems very unlikely (especially since your schedule would have them like 3 months apart). I think the DK game may appear between the two Mario’s.

But the new hardware release date is definitely the biggest question mark, Nintendo’s slate could vary wildly based on this.

Hoo boy. There a good number of games coming out in the next two months that I will ABSOLUTELY be buying. Both Return to Monkey Island and Shovel Knight Dig this month, Mario+Rabbids Sparks of Hope in October, Sonic Frontiers and Pokémon Violet in November.

I should be able to afford them all no problem. Playing them all, though. That might be an issue...

My Nintendo UK can't amend the address on my order despite previously asking me for my postcode to confirm my identity so they could amend the address on the order.

My options are: cancel the order of a limited edition game (!), hope it turns up at the right place, or maybe have the option to amend the address if the courier allows it in January.

What's so difficult about having an account option for changing delivery address for a preorder?

The timing for the Mario games interests me, yeah; I just wonder if DK is further behind the pecking order in terms of priority and development time. It's difficult to know, of course.

With hardware, I think Nintendo are happy to slot it somewhere in that fiscal year because they may well end up with several options for launch games (Zelda, Mario, DK). With cross-gen sales also very likely, the software they launch would also sell across both systems regardless of the launch.

For me, the key point is they may have enough EPD games in the works and due 'soon' to have big hits either side of the launch.

Let me tell you, folks -- long covid sucks ass.
If you don’t mind me asking: how long we talking? I have been extremely lucky and haven’t gotten Covid yet (I say yet because I feel like it’s simply a matter of time until I do) but every time I hear about Long Covid I get genuinely pretty scared about it.

In any case: I do hope you feel better soon.
