Pre-Release Splatoon 3 — Pre-release Discussion Thread

I’m reminded that unlike other shooters Splatoon doesn’t have hit detecting vibration/rumble when hitting a target. Nothing major but I generally like when shooters do have that.

When people spend almost a year about the scene with snow and rockets and it's actually just a hub

What do you mean by just a hub? There's obviously quite a bit more going on here than the equivalent hubs in the last Splatoon games:

-It's huge: you can see a map that shows you'll be moving around to various islands around the big rocket and you can actually see these areas in the background in the gameplay, so I suspect it's one whole seamless area without loading screens.

Other stuff from the gameplay:

  • Definitely a melding of idea's from the Splatoon single player games (focusing levels around new weapons and mechanics) and Octo-expansion (the way the levels are framed with challenge built into weapon choice and limited attempts, and the starting waiting room).
  • Usage of the little buddy for various things, like attacking and distracting enemies.
  • Looking at the map, there are at least five main areas before getting to the rocket.
  • On occasion, some kind of meter popped up that had a silver badge like image on it. I'm not sure what that could be for. It might increase when you do certain moves or specific tasks.

The squid roll is already in use in the tutorial for a shortcut so I would hope they took the opportunity for some advanced platforming in story mode.

oh yeah, of course I was just pointing to the fact that I have seen ridiculous theories over the months how this place is actually a open world area or one big level which was obviously never the case

I have to say, just looking at the hub I understood something, splatoon is the sequel of miiverse. Nintendo actually succeeded at creating a real community. It truly feels special.
The use of ghosts for your friends for joining games for sure makes it feel more alive.

I would like them to take it a step further and see other players moving in real time. Cause when you finish matches, it populates the hub with players you’ve played with and against. It would be cool if it just had all of us in real time strolling about.

Also, the card game looks really cool, but even cooler would be adding an arcade with some retro inspired games like in Splatoon 1’s loading screen.

Watching youtube previews, seems sunken scrolls are in alterna instead of the levels.
Something I didn't understand well is the youtuber talking about zones in alterna being interconnected and some can go like 3 to 5, skipping 4.
I'm not sure if it's all the zones of the solo mode or just on this map given they weren't permitted to clean the waste so it's a bit confusing how they could have progressed so much.

Mind you the zones are in the loading screen.

I haven't tried the "demo" yet, but are [both?] rolling techniques explained during the tutorial?
They teach you how to do the squid roll and squid surge but don't go in depth, only the most basic use. But once you know the inputs for these two it feels very natural to play around with them to do things like those shown above or in this video (including cancelling a surge into a roll)

...do they? I don't remember being taught how to do them, nor know how to do them yet.

WOW! Some of the charger splats are 🤯
You reflexes and dexterity must be out of this word. I wish I could be 1/4 as good.

It teaches you Squid Surge but I don't recall it teaching the Squid Roll. It's pretty easy to do though and I'm far from a skilled Splatoon player. While moving in a direction in swim form (while in ink) you simply flick the joystick in a different cardinal direction from where your facing and press jump at the same and you'll squid roll (all while remaining in swim form). You can do it multiple times in rapid succession. You can also do it from vertical surfaces.

I dont know if this has been answered (I havent scrolled through 51 pages lol) but since splatoon 3 has in-games purchases, based on the esrb, and 1 and 2 did not have that, I have seen mention that is because of the card game. I tried searching for it but I cant seem to find the reason.

Splatoon 2 had the Octo Expansion which was an expansive single player campaign behind a paywall, and during the Splatoon 3 Direct they already specified that a DLC expansion in the same vein is in the works

I'm actually very excited to try the dapples kit. 180p tacticooler that gives instant respawns + beakons sounds so strong.

Between this and the "Splatoon 3 is not a triumphant conclusion of a trilogy or a dramatic reset of the canon" line I caught a whiff of on Nintendo Voice Chat, which is an inappropriate story-focused framing for a multiplayer game as well inappropriate to conclude about a story-focused game after having played like three levels of it, I don't know what the IGN preview person thought they were doing.

So wait what is he saying? It doesn't look like what he was commenting on had anything to do with the campaign.

It's the opening line to a preview of the mix of stuff all previwers were shown: a bit of Turf War, a bit of Salmon Run, and a few early levels of the campaign.

you could land the entire production of boeing airbus and embraer into frye's forehead.

Also they fixed that stupid camera from 2. awesome

There appear to be cocktail cabinets in the cafe in the lobby area. Would be sweet if they allow you to play the Splat 1 retro games while waiting for your match to start.

All my friends (switch friends) but one was playing the demo today. 20 mill Splatoon3 coming here we go!

I Really love the music.

I like how this time there is not this communication error with that awful sound

nintendo-switch-eshop-server-error-code-2137-8056_feature.jpg

but instead there is a one in-game, which is better.

Tacticooler is so broken, I think it's 100% getting nerfed before the game comes out. Being able to grab a drink for a super strong buff + being able to die with zero consequence will be meta defining if it doesn't get toned down

One unannounced returning stage has been datamined
THE REEF!!
This is cool but I hope that, with updates, the game eventually ends up with more new maps than old maps. It's already crap that only 40% of the already-small launch map roster is new; I don't wanna see that percentage get lower.

I wonder how content updates will work. I know things like emotes and stuff will go through seasonal hotlantis catalogues, however are they gonna do huge weapon/stage/music drops alongside the seasons too? Or are they gonna just add those over time

I'm gonna be pessimistic and just assume that maps and such will come whenever Nintendo feels like it. Probably at a slower pace than most people think; especially for actually new content. I don't expect it to be like, say, Call of Duty's seasons where you can expect a sizeable content drop of brand new stuff every 3 months.

In Splatoon 2 we had a weapon (kit) every week at the start, and then 4 weapons every month later on. Are we gonna get 12 weapons every season now? :p

They specifically said that new weapons would be added around the same time as catalogues but nothing about stages & others. Maybe it's hopium but I don't think they want 3 months of complete void, at least stages will probably remain a monthly thing imo and stuff like X-Battle / League Battle might be random
