I remember having talks with my friends about designing a game and everyone but me was saying "the first thing you need to do when designing a game is come up with a good story, world, and characters" and I was thinking about how Splatoon characters were initially just cubes in white space while they got the gameplay concepts and mechanics worked out and was like "noooooooooo the first thing when designing a game is to come up with A GAME TO PLAY"
Honestly the older I get, more I understand Miyamoto's insistence on removing story elements from games. There's a time and place, people!! Story, world, and characters are why I love old Square RPGs, not why I love old Sonic games.
Look what story, world, and characters did to Sonic for chrissakes.
