How could they design that world like that is what I can't get over....

It's so bad and uninspiring.

Not to be rude but I kinda feel bad for Sonic fans. His games just almost always seem a bit shit haha. That combat just looked dreadful, and what was with those enemy designs?
I'd very much like a 3D Sonic game akin to this:

This on the other hand actually looks really cool and like what I would expect a Sonic game to be like.

I thought it was confirmed this was the gameplay video SEGA themselves wanted to show? Like they choosed to show this, it isn't IGN fault
Totally, it isn't IGN's fault. It's definitely on Sega. However, the fact that this glitchy game play is the stuff that Sonic Team wants to show tells horrors of how the game actually is.

Of everything that's wrong with this new trailer, the thing that caught my attention the most was the complete lack of battle music.

what if......we got a fantastic 3d Sonic title......but Sonic is slower than usual.

Would that be ok or would you have an issue with Sonic being slow?...i'd be ok with it...i mean, isn't the whole point of gaming to play great games?

I liked the big robot fight and how some of the moves looked (mostly the rapid kick one tbh), but the regular enemies taking way too long to beat is gonna kill most of the fun of the fighting.

Sega really shouldn't be hiding so much at this point either, there's no good reason not to have the UI or combat music in this footage.

Other than the stiff animations, I'm in the same position as last time : Nothing impressive nor alarming for me.

I'm really done with the boost mechanic so honestly, if he were slower (more like Adventure) and the terrain was designed for momentum-based speed I'd be 100% down for that.

That's actually one of the main reasons I've been begging for an open-world Sonic. I figured momentum-based traversal at speed in a BotW-style or XBX-style world would be a blast. As opposed to the push-button-to-go-fast system they've been using since Unleashed.

wow I love the “spin the sonic model in a circle around the enemy’s axis point several times upside down” animation

incredible

There is no way this took 5 years. It definitely has been rebooted at some point with no changes to the release period.
It was at least delayed a year ago, Sega admitted that much. Shortly after their previous community liason (and meme factory) took a corporate job as director of strategy, they said their position on Sonic games switched from "we must have a new one out every couple years" to "we just take our time and ensure quality and polish." I assume he had something to do with it because he was the only guy at Sega who would openly recognize and make fun of the bombs like Sonic 06. But that was in 2021 so.. yeah, like what have they been doing if this gameplay demo is after they delayed the game a couple years for polish?

I recently watched a playthrough of Forces and besides the cringey story and dialogue, it didn’t look that bad?

Edit: by “watched” I of course mean had on in the background while I took care of my one year old

This does not look good. I didn't think it looked good after the previous gameplay video but it looks so much worse after the combat. It looks generic and it looks tedious. Outside of some surface level aesthetic elements like springs, rails, rings, and Sonic himself, this could just as well be a completely different series (and not a good different series). Completely checked out on this game, personally.

Not sure if anyone here plays Phantasy Star Online New Genesis (also made by Sega), but this game looks like they’re building a Sonic game based on that tech. Though I think PSO:NGS is a fantastic game, this ain’t quite up to what that game offers…

The animation quality in this video is something else

Not something good, mind, but definitely something else

I completely agree, but I'm not liking what we have seen so far of frontiers. I'd rather them make a literal sonic adventure 3.

Wow this looks bad. Better than first video, but still very bad. What was the last good Sonic game?
Fully good one Colors, problem with Generations is that the last stretch of the game is terrible and the mission system is just unnecessary and filled with either redundant or plain bad challenges. Mania has some questionable level design (which is partly because is being faithful to bad level design from the source material) and level choices.

they could have done a good, goal oriented gameplay demo, a demo where they run around the open world with some commentary explaining shit, or even just a short 2-3 min trailer. all of which would have been better than the 14 mins they given us so far

I ain't ever seen reveals go this poorly before

Looks like IGN was given footage of an older build. This model looks like the Unleashed model! The Tails Channel leak could still be real.

Forces was fine. The worst part about it was the bad writing (which hopefully won’t be a thing with future games now that they’ve finally gotten rid of those writers) and the obviously low budget nature of the game. It was on the shorter side and the level design wasn’t exactly amazing, but it was enjoyable enough and the customizable Avatar character was great.

Also, one big thing that Forces doesn’t get enough credit for is being the first main series Sonic game to ditch lives. That was a great and long overdue change.

Im still optimistic but they really needed someone talking during the gameplay and giving details and to lower enemy health otherwise i like it

Sorry, for the double post, but the footage from the beginning of the Sonic Frontiers combat video with the longer quilled Sonic was taken way more recently.

There’s no fanbase more patient and understanding then the Sonic fanbase.

Must be a roller coaster of emotions really. Cause they get lots of merchandise, now movies, classic games every once and a while. But the main series seems to be the one that misses the mark lol.

I've watched both gameplay videos and I just don't see a game that's far along. The world seems like a generic UE5 demo with random Sonic rails and elements thrown around. Sonic feel so out of place, the soundtrack is very forgettable and just "noise" during the gameplay, on top of being BotW like for no reason. The enemies look really boring as well. I can at least see the combat being somewhat interesting if they can improve what is there.

It really feels like they made a world but didn't know who to put in there, and just decided to make it Sonic.

Sonic has always been a multimedia franchise but it's to the point where the games are now becoming the side projects to the movies and TV shows.
