As a rule I try not to gloat or take schadenfreude in the unhappiness of others, but holy moly right wing folks are in a meltdown here Down Under since the conservative party lost power yesterday and I must confess it is kinda hilarious.

Seeing so many takes along the lines of "RIP Australia, we are doomed", "Communism has taken over our country", "All hail our new ruler Xi Jinping", etc.

They're carrying on like the sky is falling and seeing them rage be like

Hopefully Labor can deliver a promising government. It is nice to see ScoMo and his goons get their shit kicked in though. Ideally the Liberals have completely alienated fair weather voters with their nonsense given that the overwhelming majority of Australians live in urban areas, but there's always a pendulum swing.

It is encouraging though to see some good election news, between this and Northern Ireland. Shame same can't be said for the Philippines.

The NSO voucher I wanted to use for Advance Wars almost ran out, glad I set an alarm. Sadly, I couldn't use it for Splatoon 3 due to its expiry date so I ended up using it for Mario Party Superstars.

Guess I know what I'm playing on the weekend.

I'm taking a break from Sekiro because I haven't played it in 3 weeks and going back to it this weekend I felt sloppy and incapable of making any progress against Genichiro. Like playing it for the first time again. I think I might have to restart it. Sigh.

So i made some progress on EarthBound and started Tunic, which is pretty fun and I really like its gimmick of... well... being inscrutable. However, maybe it's my failure with Sekiro, but seeing the soulsy checkpoint system is making it harder than it should for me to play it.

It's so weird that NSO vouchers expire over there. What happens if you don't use it? They just... disappear?

Though personally idk what I'd use the two vouchers for. Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade: DE, maybe? Don't have many games where I could feasibly say "I want to put down £42 on this," right now.

Yeah it's very encouraging for me at least that the LNP's losses seem to have flowed to more progressive Independents rather than the likes of Palmer and other far right parties as I'd feared.

I already hear LNP cheerleaders claiming they lost cos they drifted too far left which is laughable given that not only are they still strongly conservative, but the seats they lost were all to more left leaning candidates. I only hope that if this does drive them even further to the right then doing so further alienates the average voter.

It remains to be seen how Labor will fare, but at the very least we're no longer led by a party with values straight out of the 1950s, and there's been a definite progressive shift from the rut we've been in since 2013.

Yeah, they just run out. Depending on where you live, there's not much of a point in buying them unless you want a game digitally. From my experience you can get physical copies for the same price or cheaper.

Hey Fami.

I’ve been quiet, working all weekend and catching up on the election stuff in my spare time.

I’ve got my days off now so will be playing a bunch of Kirby 64! Managed to do the first two worlds earlier so onto the third tonight.

My partner is on night shift so with her gone I might treat myself to an old fashioned a snuggle up with the pup while playing Kirby.

Taking a break from .hack// games right now. Not really making progress.

I I’ve decided to go on a mission to recreate Great Plateau in game builder garage, complete with all the sheikah slate mechanics. Gonna be a tough one.

My n64 controller tracking info hasn’t updated in a week :( it’s only coming from 2 states over!

I’m up early this morning because I have a one year old and he never sleeps past seven. Also my wife and I are home all week on account of catching covid, wheeeeeeeee

How many Mega Man games have you beaten? I've beaten 4.

I've beaten 2, 3, X1 and X2.
MM1-9, 11, &B, Power Battle, Power Fighters, Powered Up
MMII-V
MMX1-6, Xtreme, Xtreme2, MHX
MMZ1-4
MMZX-ZXA
MMBN1,3

So, 35, in all. I should go back and do something about MM10, it just came at the wrong time for me to have 8-bit MM fatigue...

I used to wake up at 9-10, even sometimes on work days since I have a flexible schedule.

Then I had a kid. Then another.

Now it's 6:30, if I'm lucky.

Also sorry about the covid!

Jesus the digital trading card game market has exploded

Growing up I loved Yugioh and Magic, then later played hearthstone for a bit

Anyone have any recs on what I should jump into these days? The new YuGiOh game on Switch caught my eye but I’d probably be playing it on iPad / mac. I’ve been looking around and have found Master Duels, HearthStone, ES: Legends, Eternal, Mythgard, Gwent, Legends of Runeterra, Magic Legends

Literally every company seems to want that hearthstone money lmao - just want to make sure I don’t screw myself over with a shitty economy. An interesting single player is a plus to learn the ropes.

I’m sure there are plenty of indie games I could add to the list (Steamworld Quest, Slay the Spire come to mind), but I‘d prefer something multiplayer to rope my partner into down the line

EDIT: Damn I know nothing about it but Shadowverse + the RPG adaption on switch seem nice
I kinda gave up on digital CCGs after realizing how much of a grind / time-suck they are unless you want to constantly feed the beast. Maybe the current crop is better but up until Hearthstone the monetization on most wasn't great. Also most of them tend to cater to Spike type players basically meaning games are typically just quick beat downs because that's how you grind currency fastest + everyone wants to win. None of the ones I played at the time had any sort of "casual" option. Everyone was in the same pool and that just sucks when you're more of a Timmy/Johnny player like myself.

Also it's funny how Hearthstone pretty much killed the first wave of digital CCGs, a number of which were on Kickstarter originally. I think the only one I tried back in the day that's still going is Faeria which started out as a LCG (living card game a la Netrunner) model during the KS period, then switched to F2P once Hearthstone made big $$$, and then went back to LCG model to keep the game alive.

The games I played or backed that are now dead:
  • SolForge - Interesting idea by the Ascension folks, but marred with a design that just didn't really work well in practice, poor economy design, and a bad client that got a rewrite way too late. I think they're trying to bring the game out physically which I find funny because I expect it's going to be a flop again.
  • Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes - This was a really solid lane-based CCG which took the concept and added a second column to each lane. Heavily based on the Heroes of Might & Magic and was a fun approximation of that game as a card game. Unfortunately it never found an audience and was put on hiatus after a couple expansions. But it had a better economy than SolForge at least which was nice.
  • Duelyst - Kickstarted this one, played a couple rounds, loved the art style and TRPG style gameplay. Never found out why it died off.
  • Hex: Shards of Fate - Kickstarted this one at the lowest tier because the KS was stupid nuts and designed to drain people's wallets. Hype for this was through the roof if I recall correctly. Never ended up playing it and then when it became very clear they had basically cloned MtG I really lost any interest in it. Not surprised it died off.

It's also a little frustrating how nearly every digital CCG these days is using the Hearthstone card frames with the serial numbers filed off. I miss the early days of physical CCGs when every game had a unique look to their frames.

So I guess my recommendation would be Faeria in that case. It's pretty cool with a gameplay loop like Magic the Gathering but you don't have to worry about land screw since you can always build a land of your choice each turn, which also fills out the board where you put creatures into play. It's also by the devs who are making Roguebook (since you mentioned StS & SteamWorld Quest which it's similar to I believe), and was their first game.

If you can find it in the app stores still, Spectromancer is a cool lane-based psuedo-CCG which Richard Garfield did some consulting on. It has a lengthy single-player campaign with some expansions and there was online multiplayer at one point. Calculords is another digital CCG that might still be available on Android (it was delisted a while ago on Apple I think for not updating) which is very unique since it uses math as a central mechanic, I think that's single player only.

These days I mostly just play around with deck builders which scratch a similar itch without the need to chase after cards. Things like Star Realms/Hero Realms, Ascension, Dominion, Millennium Blades, and Clank!/ Clank! In! Space!. Unfortunately the latter three don't have digital implementations yet.

Exhibit C:
Love the retro look of your coffee table and entertainment center!

I haven’t beaten any Mega Man games. I had the PSP X1 remake, and I think I might have had a collection of the NES games on PS2.

I applied to a position in Nintendo Europe.

They recently said they will not consider my application :(

My dream of being a leaker will not be truth :( .

Good flight to you ! Order a Gin & Tonic, play a nice game, and enjoy your time on the plane
Thanks! I'm having stomach issues so alcohol is probably out of the question but my physical copy of Chrono Cross arrived on Saturday so that should keep me nice and occupied.

For sure; I got my SNES fairly late (the N64 was already out; and my system was refurbished), but SEGA fever was everywhere,.. Though I do remember seeing Nintendo commercials on TV and printed ads; I even got to see a legit NES at a neighbor's house a couple of years earlier, and not one of the Gradiente's Famiclones.

As I said, Nintendo did what they could with their distributing partners in the country, but they came in way too late, and the conversation was all about SEGA. Thankfuly (?), SEGA's later consoles were such a mess, that they were dropped quickly and Nintendo finally became more of a respectable presence alongside the PlayStation 1.

Funnily enough, I actually got to buy a Tec-Toy's SEGA Saturn when I started collecting lol
I wasn't aware of a Tectoy Saturn. This is wild. Did they released any portuguese translated / exclusive games for it?
Wrt SNES, I remember a company signed to represent Nintendo in Brazil (guess It was called Playtronic) but their presence was not really relevant (from what I recall, obviously)

Thanks for the recommendation and background! Confirming my suspicions there that I might regret getting into any actual live digital CCD.

I'll look into Faeria later today once work calms down and get back to you– I remember seeing it when it came to Switch a couple years ago!

Going on safari in Botswana in July and decided to take my 3DS instead of Switch as to not risk its loss or destruction RIGHT before Xenoblad3 comes out. Will be interesting to look at that screen for many many hours of plane rides after not using it for 5 years. Used my credit card for the last time to pick up some games I never played before (Link Between Worlds, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Pokemon Crystal (had Silver back in the day but never Crystal) and more). I also hope my 3DS won't get destroyed but I guess it's either that or... books.

Just curious...how often do people dig into the retro libraries on NSO? I feel like they get a lot of discussion and hype but a lot of people don't actually play the old games very much.

I've got something like 35 hours on SNES, 30 on N64, 15 on NES, and I haven't touched the Genesis app yet.

I have maybe 20 hours between the NES, SNES, and N64 apps. I don't play them too often. Banjo-Kazooie alone is probably half that time.

Despite save-stating myself into an extremely precarious situation yesterday with seemingly no way out and becoming very frustrated until I finally reached some salvation, Earthbound is a very, very special game. I'm in Saturn Valley at the moment - these guys are amazing

I just realized Stranger Things 4, Obi Wan, and the season finale of the Owl House all come out this Friday. You gotta be kidding me. DO Y'ALL THINK I HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD?!

Whenever I leave the house I make sure I have both in my bag. Except when I go to work, in that case I just take a book with me.
Same, I have a cross-body bag that's just big enough to hold my some combination of my Switch/iPad/current read, two out of three.

So what’s the overall consensus on Bugsnax? Is it actually fun to play or is the focus more on the narrative/twists? Should I wait for a deep discount? I feel like that game got a ton of hype during the PS5 reveal > launch period, but then the conversation got buried away out of sight faster than a Japanese sales thread on Era.
