It's a pretty short game unlike similar games of that era.
Gonna need some citations on which JRPGs in the 16-bit era ran longer than 25-30 hours on average. It wasn't until the PS1 era that things started to get out of hand. And really that was everyone looking at Final Fantasy VII and being like "well if Squaresoft can do it..."

Now if Zelda AND 3D Mario don’t show up this year, it’s definitely not gonna be 2017-2. Not that this would be disappointing or anything, but those two or even would be crucial for comparing the output.
A 5 year gap for the 3D Mario team is also quite remarkable

I'm going sicko mode on Friday, AKA I'm seeing Everything Everywhere All at Once, then immediately switching into the IMAX theater to watch some excessive, mindless Bayhem thanks to Ambulance. Haven't done a double feature in forever.
I WANT TO SEE THOSE SO BADLY but no word of either of them coming to my local theater yet. 😭
Weirdly, they have the poster up for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (which I also want to support), and I at least have tickets to an advance Wednesday screening of this other movie that I'm kinda excited about I guess 👀

Seems to take 25 hours for Story + Extra based on howlongtobeat, which isn't really that different from Chrono Trigger main story, so I'm fine with that.
I much prefer short JRPGs like this over too long for their own safe JRPGs like DQXI lol.
Someone on reddit said 13-15 hours for the whole game and howlongtobeat says just story is 18.5 hours. Sadly we don't have enough on a game that niche right now, but hopefully we will as we get closer to the release date.

DQ and FF games on SNES clock on 30 hours on average yes but Live A Live is supposed to be only half of that. Still I can't speak for sure as we don't have solid info on that.

That's true. Super Mario RPG takes 20 hours to complete, games like Earthbound and Bahamut Lagoon weren't that long either. Even the Dragon Quest games from that era were half as short as the most modern entries in the series.

In the span of 6 years (November 2011-October 2017), they released 3D Land, 3D World, and Odyssey. Maybe the 5 year gap is because the team had to split in two to work on Mario and Donkey Kong simultaneously?

Honestly, the fact that Live-A-Live is sub 20 hours sounds pretty appealing right about now. I've bounced from BDSP to Legends Arceus to a replay of FireRed, and I'm probably gonna start Octopath Traveler soon. I could go for something short.

To be fair we have got Mario 3D All-stars and Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury during this gap. Most of the devs from EPD Tokyo weren't involved on the making of this game but I think Nintendo wants to space the 3D Mario releases. Also usually it's one 3D Mario game per console, I wouldn't be surprised if the next 3D Mario is a launch title or it releases close to the Switch 2/Pro (or it's at least cross-gen)

Hahahaha I still have to catch the first one!! Might just say screw it and rent it on Amazon Prime since I don't have Paramount+. I got my tickets to The Northman today and I'm waiting for Unbearable Weight to go on sale :)

Sure! There was a lot of Mario stuff.
Particularly, I meant that the team wasn’t really active since Odyssey (I think Bowsers Fury was NST, not EPD). It’s just surprising to me considering that Mario usually needs less time than Zelda, but for that we got pretty major DLC expansions and the sequel really is on the horizon now, while the 3D Mario Team (and 2D as well) is basically radio silent.

Do people think Nintendo has announced everything for 2022 that isn’t a remaster or a 1-2 Switch sequel?

Im really hoping for a Metroid Dread or Age of Calamity situation, a mid-sized game we don’t currently know about that comes out a few months after announcement.

New Pokémon snap has beaten, great little game. Was always a fan of the original and happy a sequel got made after all this time

Now that it’s off the list, time for more backlog games. A few smaller ones right now though

Not even close. I expect the June Direct to give us a few surprises for the latter half of the year.

This is what I'm expecting.

Getting incredibly excited for 13 Sentinels now.
It sounds like a real love letter to folks like me who love sci-fi/kaiju/time travel/multi-threaded narratives/etc, and it's wonderful news to hear it's a quality port as well.

Everything I've seen and heard of it from trailers and such seems awesome, from the art to the music to the combat.

My only concern is hearing the difficulty has been bumped up from the PS4 version; I'm really not good at strategy games and I don't cope well with frustration and difficulty. The game's combat being "laid back" was actually something I was really looking forward to. I hope the easiest setting is still accessible enough.

At any rate, my hype levels are spiking and it looks like yet another gem to add to the Switch's crown.

The strategy portions were pretty damn easy in the PS4 version up until the final few. It's not really that strategic. Mostly just fire big missile into groups of enemies. Honestly, the strategy parts at the least exciting sections of the game. If you don't want to stress out at all, just set them to easy.

When your tax return refund is looking good, so you’re considering grabbing something you were going to skip (in this case the moderoid Rayearth trio kits)

I'll echo what HockeyBird said, the strategy sections were incredibly easy on PlayStation. Making them harder will still probably result in them being easy. Looking at screenshots and videos, the strategy stuff looks confusing, but it's not. It's a fancy coat of paint over a basic foundation. Though I actually had a lot of fun with them despite them being so easy.

Yep plus looks like Live-A-Live is not exactly a traditional title and it has a bit of mechanical variety so looking forward to that one

And still, imo short-ish is stuff like Inside or Little Nightmares, which are like ~4 hours xD I tend to switch between several titles if I'm taking several days to complete something and I stop feeling hooked. Ofc some longer stuff got me hooked until the end (SMT IV), but shorter games are def more inviting imo

It's best not to think of the strategy portions of 13 Sentinels as something like Starcraft but more like a tower defense game with movable towers (your mechs) and a pause function. The game is "real time" but it will pause when you mech has either gotten to its location or it's ready to take an action. You will be spending the majority of your time in pause mode where you decide where to move your units and what attacks you want them to do. After you give commands to one unit, the game will play out in real time until another unit is ready to take an action and then the game will pause again. You might be spending 15 to 20 minutes in some of these battles but if you play them in real time without pausing, they are actually are often less than a minute long. It's actually plays more like a turn based strategy game rather than real time strategy.

No doubt there's some surprise we don't know about. Switch Sports and Mario Strikers weren't rumored before the February Direct either and here we are getting them in April and June.

btw 17 gigabyte download of a 19 gigabyte game someone cheapened out not use a 16 gigabyte cart

Stares in the 6 year gap between 64 and Sunshine and the 5 year gap between Sunshine and Galaxy.

The N64 and GameCube Eras truly were Spinoffs on top of Spinoffs. Lots of good ones! But spinoffs regardless.
Kinda surreal to see "We want a Mario game, it's been years!" after the end of Wii into the Wii U & 3DS era of a new Mario game coming out practically every year, NSMBW until Mario Kart 8 / Super Mario Maker

Not saying this in a negative tone, but it's just kinda wild to me lol

I also want a new 2D & 3D Mario game
Times sure have changed, huh? From NSMB to Super Mario 3D World, we got a main series Super Mario game every year. We got two New Super Mario Bros. games in 2012! But things slowed down a bit in the Switch era again with lots of ports and enhanced editions (even if Nintendo considers those main series now). To be fair, 2006-2013 had a lot of New Super Mario Bros., and games that were seen as safe and very on-brand (even if 3D Land and World are much better than just that description)...and that also bleeded into the spin offs of the era too. And now the spinoffs are a touch slower to come out too, what with HD development and all.

Depending on your view, the last 2D Mario game is either Maker 2, a respectable 3 years old, or Super Mario Run, which is turning 6 - if not NSMBU, which is reaching a decade. And Bowser's Fury was last year (and I adored it), but most would probably point to Odyssey as the last major 3D Mario game, and that's almost 5. Makes viewing this situation a lot more complicated I suppose. To be fair though, I'll always want a new Mario game should the development resources reasonably allow for it.

Ironic that the most rushed Mario game (Sunshine) is also the one that took the longest to come out. But the cancelled Mario 64 2 probably had something to do with that.

Yeah, definitely wasn't a situation where they were constantly working on Sunshine. The experimentation on 64 2, not to mention having to support the development of games like Ocarina of Time and the 64DD failing and such, really stalled the main series from getting a truly new game.

I'm so happy movies are properly back.

The Batman was kino, The Lost City was passable entertainment but I'm so relieved to see a big-budget studio comedy with A-listers again, X was a horror-comedy BANGER, Morbius was a trainwreck, and yet I'm just thrilled to be regularly supporting the theatrical moviegoing experience. It also helps that I have Regal Unlimited :)

I'm actually temporarily planning to do that same doubleheader on Saturday. Lol

Can Namco speed things up a little? I wanna play Soul Calibur on my Switch. I don't care which one, I'm even ok with that SC on PSP.

Their 2022 lineup on Switch is very abysmal. More classic Pac-man and Taiko games? We already have plenty of them. Where are Tekkens? Where are Ace Combats? Where are other Katamari games? It's a baffling as hell fact that Switch still doesn't have a single 3D fighter game. Even 3DS had some.
This is pretty late but don’t expect anything BN internally. That means no Tekken, Ace Combat, Souls, Soul Calibur, or anything else under Harada’s purview. Yes this even includes ports of older games.

At this point BN sees the Switch as a dumping ground for family friendly arcade game, family friendly games, and their satellite studios finally getting on the train.

Ayyyyy we'll have to share our thoughts if the double header pans out for both of us lmao
Been MIA for a bit here, sad to share I’ve come down with covid and have been heads down resting and recovering. Hope everyone is doing well.
Ugh, feel better soon! It's no fun, but if you're vaxxed and/or boosted it helps tremendously, speaking from experience.

My life, and the life of everyone on this forum, has been a little emptier and sadder without you here. We hope to have a fully healthy Totofogo back with us soon, and when that day comes there will be celebrations all over the world as we have our glorious savior back to free us from.....wait. Is that Quaxly in your profile picture instead of the objectively superior Fuecoco? Um yeah, get well soon or whatever. Glad you're feeling well enough to post, I guess. We missed you, kind of. I want to marry you, but it's not like I like you or anything.

Nooooooo! Feel better soon, dude! Show covid who's boss!

Quaxly is bae.

If you love multi-threaded narratives and piecing together stories told out of order so that the inside of your brain looks like the Always Sunny Detective Board meme, then you’re going to have a blast with 13 Sentinels. It’s a masterclass in pacing and making sure the big reveals and twists always come at just the right time. It also makes you care a surprising amount about its characters considering there’s 13 of them, which is a large number to get to know, remember, and differentiate in a short amount of time.

Yall're selling me on this game that I was admittedly very skeptical about before.
I know I'm not the one you were talking to but still 😅
