I was watching a video of zombie rollerz, a pinball roguelike. Looked like a lot of fun.

Thanks for the thread.

I got this one up a little later than I'd like, but I should be set up better going forward. Not sure what or how much I'll be picking up this month. For sure Kirby, as that will be great with the kids. Young Souls also looks like a decent beat'em up. I'll eventually get Triangle Strategy, but I'm currently playing Elden Ring, and there is no sense getting it now if I can't actually play it.

What are you all going to get this month?

Also, going forward, if there are any upcoming titles that you all think should be highlighted, please send them my way. I'm basically just going through the list of games and picking things that I think look interesting, or have positive impressions from previous releases/platforms, but realistically there are too many releases to keep track of all of them, so I'm definitely missing some cool stuff.

Kirby and I've already got the Mario Kart dlc to look forward to. There's some Indies here that I've wishlisted but they'd just go on my backlog so I'll wait before picking them up.

This month is wild. Digitally I’m picking up Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (despite the huge bummer that it won’t be getting rollback), Phantom Breaker Omnia, and the Mario Kart 8 Booster Pass. I’m pretty sure I’m also picking up Chocobo GP, but since it has the Lite version I will try the actual racing out before I commit.

Triangle Strategy, Rune Factory 5, and Kirby FL I’m picking up physically.

My buy List:
Kirby (duh)
Triangle Strategy
Persona Arena Ultimax
.hack/G.U. Last Recode
Rune Factory 5
Chocobo GP

Waiting for reviews:
Aztech
Crystar

I know that people will disagree with me on this, but:

This time in terms of video games (such as sheer variety, quantity, and even quality) is better than the 1990s.

IMHO

I totally agree with you. Nostalgia aside, as I love the videogames from the 90s, we are seeing an amazing and wide spectrum of videogames of all kind, from expensive AAA to cheaper but great indie games. And regarding Nintendo in particular, I think they are doing amazingly well in variety, quantity and quality. I'm enjoying gaming nowadays a lot.

So far, this month is just Kirby and maaaaybe Young Souls. I have a backlog that’s starting to get pissy and I really want to tackle some of it before Forgotten Land.

I'm in for Kirby and Triangle Strategy. If I have time also The Cruel King and the Great Hero as I enjoyed their past game The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince

Looking for a shorter game to play, after playing Arceus.

One of the game I'm thinking about is FILMECHANISM, which released in December and currently is on sale in the EU. Any impressions on that one?

As a 90s kid, yeah, gaming is the best it’s ever been. Honestly probably the only people who would disagree with this thesis are those missing specific franchises (not having a modern Silent Hill does hurt a lot)

Kirby and Mario Kart DLC for sure. Triangle Strategy looks cool but I'm a bit RPG'd out right now so I'll wait on that one. I'll probably be spending most of the month shoring up what I want to get from the 3DS and Wii U eshops.

It's not on the eshop yet (hopefully not delayed) but Dark Deity was announced for the 17th. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Thank you so much for the new thread, your effort is greatly appreciated.

This month it's all about Triangle and Kirby. My 6YO boy will love the latter, I'm going to pick it up for him, mostly.

A Musical Story has released today iirc and just got a whopping 9,5 from NWR. It seems a little on the short side but I want it °_°

I'm playing Roki currently, it'a a point & click game with some really good moments and very nice graphics. Not my favourite genre, though, I find it too slow for my tastes, but I'm enjoying it enough.

Sumire is 6,5€ in the EU eShop (50% off) until march 6th. I've tried it a little and I'm impressed, frankly. It looks gorgeous and semms like one of those "feel good" games we all need, like Wandersong.

Well, that, and this:

That some of the gameplay trends and genre trends have changed here and there.

During the 2000s, a lot of stuff were shooters.

During the 2010s, some people (not me at all) got sick and tired of open-worlds.

One thing absent for a while after the 1990s was: CRPGs and JRPGs. So, certainly, a lot of people felt that missing.

However, since the start of the 2010s, there was been a growing resurgence in a lot of the more-or-less "dead" genres. I would also argue that that was about the time where you saw more experimentation with different gameplay styles and a bigger plurality of genres.

On a slightly more political note, when it comes to labor issues and business practices (and this technically doesn't have to do with the quality and variety of the games themselves):

This is nothing new. The only difference is that the video game developers are bigger now. And I doubt we'll ever really know about the abusive practices that happened during the 1980s and 1990s to a major extent. And if you look at the wider industries today, not just in electronics, but in the economy, in seems that the video game industry isn't any special in this regard.

If there IS a trend, then I believe that this isn't a video game trend so much as it is as an economic and corporate trend since, actually, the 80s themselves, one involving most or all industries.

So, regarding the criticism about labor and business practices, I completely understand this, but if I were being frank, I would say that people should be looking at more systematic issues regarding the wider economic, labor, and even cultural atmosphere. Looking at the video game industry exclusively is rather platonic, imho.

(Not sure if I should be having this discussion here so I guess I'll stop, but that's all I had to say for now.)

The Cruel King and the Great Hero looks... great.

But having a story with a dragon in it? That's just cruel.

(...I hate dragons.)

It's a wonderful time for games but the late 90s to early 2000s was really something else entirely. The Golden era of just about every genre was during this time. The amount of innovation on top of the quality of titles coming out was unparalleled outside of maybe the mid to late 80s.

I... can see what you would think that, but keep in mind: the times were different and the video games back then that innovated in new ways first were the ones to get there first. Nobody else can do what they did again. One someone is the "first of their kind" nobody else can be the "first" after that any more than we can be the first on the moon. By this point, there's little new under the sun. Maybe I'm being myopic, but I think that we call it the "Golden Era" because many of the first video game enthusiasts grew up with that era and are still alive today (lots of Gen Xers and Millennials) so, in my opinion, the view today is at least a bit unbalanced in that regard.

Lauding the late 90s/early 00s, I think, is another case of gen xers being blamed for something that’s literally a millennial thing- even late gen xers like me were in our early 20s by then so we didn’t exactly ‘grow up’ with it. Obsession with 8/16-bit (and the jump between the two as a defining gaming moment) is more of a gen x thing. As is anyone who still can’t let go of Sega/Nintendo console wars after ~15 years of Sonic on Nintendo platforms :D

That's why I said Gen Xers and Millennials.

And I have seen Gen Xer YouTubers do this.

But of course, the problem is that many Millennials, especially when they were growing up, always assumed that what came before in the previous generation was "better" and that the opinions of the previous generation "mattered more."

IMHO. Just what I observed. It was sort of like that "damn, I want to play what the grown-ups are playing" attitude, but I think it plagued a lot of Millennials more. I don't really see that with zoomers, but eh, maybe I'm not looking hard enough or something.

Ah fair enough, I see what you mean.

I've been revisiting Nintendoland on the Wii U today and really enjoying it - Donkey Kong Crash Course is so addictive! I wish Nintendo would put out some more experimental mini games again. The old Art Style games on the Wii were great too - Cubello was my favourite. In this era of bite sized indie experiences it would be wonderful to see some small scale experimenting from Nintendo again.

The Cruel King and the Great Hero is coming out later this week. I can't wait for more people to get their hands on the game.

I'm still early on, but the game plays well both docked and in handheld mode.

I played this a little bit when it came out, but I enjoyed it..It reminded me a bit of Box Boy.
I really wish I could have a digital copy of Ring Fit for the same reason.
I believe certain countries had a digital option..sadly US isn't one of them.

I see that Going Under has a 75% discount on the EU eShop right now. How is that game compared to games like Hades, Dead Cells or Enter the Gungeon?

It's very different, but a quality game all the same. It's one of my favourite roguelites on Switch.

The Wunderling update had dropped - it's now Wunderling DX, with a new world added. It's one of my favourite Indies and now it's even bigger. Highly recommended 👍

This looks really cool but I also see it's been on sale for like $4 a couple times recently. I think I will toss on the wishlist and wait for the next sale!

How many worlds are there now total? I'm enjoying the game, and going for 100% as we go through the levels so I'm sure that prolongs each one quite a bit, but it's feeling a little long at this point with 18 levels per world. In World 7 now.

I‘m currently eyeing Lacuna and Kraken Academy, which both look very unique. Not much talk about these games that I could find, but Lacuna got excellent reviews. Does anyone know whether the Switch ports are good?

I‘m really glad that there are so many rather hidden, but very fun and/or interesting games on Switch! What a great library!

Damn, I like SwitchUp.

They're the least annoying YouTube channel out of all the Nintendo YouTubers out there.

Also, they aren't a GenX fat white person with dark hair and a pudgy face who wears a hoodie inside for some fucking reason (also, can't fucking shave well despite their age, but I'll stop there).

...No, seriously, am I the only one noticing the, err, fact that some of these people on camera look the fucking same!?

I actually mentioned to a friend yesterday "hey is there something with youtube reviewers, like every custom thumbnail where they appear and it's no a template pict they never smile, look almost angry, is this like a non-spoken thing when doing reviews?"

Regardint this topic I'm actually amazed at Aztecha performance (docked mode) as open worlds tend to struggle with switch, but looking at that video it's now in my wish list

So Chocobo GP is already out in Japan and players are finding that the multiplayer network protocol is not synchronized. That means the faster connections get to start first lol. Probably better to wait for patches if anyone is interested

There are some good Indies coming out so far this month. Next week we have Dawn of the Monsters and I've really been enjoying that, but today we have Young Souls. This was one of my favorite games last year when it launched on Stadia and the Switch version delivers as well so far(I'm 3 hours in). So So good. I went ahead and made a gameplay video, but it runs really well in both docked and handheld mode and I can't wait to dive into it some more. here's a gameplay video.

This looks really good. Definitely picking it up (eventually).

I didn't enjoy this one for the first 40 minutes or so, but once the game opens up it is more fun. I feel like this game was just so close to being something really special, but instead feels really floaty and not quite there.
