Overall. This reveal is shown to be received much more positively.

Helps that Legends was a surprised to many and that it’s been outright called Open World.

Just need the starter evolutions to see where the direction goes. Happy or sad lol
Yeah I'm a little apprehensive about the starter final forms. I honestly think gen 8's might be my least favorite, that or 5. So I'm mostly hoping these are dual typed and have more interesting designs. At the very least surely the duck will be part Flying.

That Croc is going bipedal and you all know it (well I mean it's already bipedal but it's staying that way)
Man I hope not, I'm not anti-anthro but I don't want it to be too similar to Feraligatr. I like that even though Blastoise and Torterra are both turtles they're way different. But as long as it's a good design I probably won't care much.

I have a question, if it meant having an extremely limited dex, would you want a top tier graphics wise Pokemon game?
Yes tbh, as long as "graphics" includes unique animations. A tight roster of ~150 Pokémon would still feel complete (like Gen 1), and no more than ~70 would need to be new (like Gen 6). All hits, no misses.

If SMTV could do it with 200+ demons, I don't see why Pokémon couldn't. One could say "that's not top tier graphics" but I'm literally not asking for more than that lol.

Give me N64 models if in trade I get some anti-aliasing.
To be honest... I hope battles are mandatory as soon as a Pokémon sees you. And the out of battle ball throwing is gone. I'm almost certain it won't be, but the worst part of arceus is easily that wild Pokémon are basically worthless because you're expected to catch so many, and that the optimal solution to basically all the wild Pokémon otherwise is just to completely ignore them.
You don't have to completely remove the mechanic to change the focus. Catching extras was encouraged in Arceus because that's an easy way to get research points to help fill out the Pokédex. If that's not the case in another game, a person would just be wasting their own time by their own choice to do so.

That cat better stay on four God damn feet and become a panther or something.

Quakly is Donald Duck from KH2. Can't wait to see it becomes part Psychic and can cast Zetaflare and chooses to never heal me.

The croc looks like an apple and I thought it it was the grass type for a second.

I know I should avoid Pokémon discourse on the internet because every time I feel fucking insane

this is a “holy shit looks good I’m so stoked that it’s coming this year” for me

so many assumptions about team makeup and dev schedules and shit like what counts as “unfinished” and “bad” in previous games like ??? I don’t even understand

like… you wanting something different doesn’t make Sword & Shield bad at what it was doing. I fucking loved it tbh, I can understand why people didn’t like some of the choices but they were choices

there are always gonna be choices when they develop these games

like what is it people want?? I don’t understand?? I don’t understand!! like what do you need to mod Elden Ring to catch shit in??? why do I feel so much more fucking insane reading about Pokémon than I even feel railing against and screaming about the state of the fucking world???? what is happening and why is this bothering me so much????????

so yeah uh please disregard, I’m just gonna tap out and y’all enjoy the discourse

it’s totally spain

wtf was happening in that live action intro though I’m v confused about escalator cop

oh god oh no I like discussing it

I’m gonna be subject to these takes forever

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!
pokemon fans sipping that derangement juice

Even entering a battle is a fail state because of the optimal catching method in Arceus being that never happens.

That's completely counter to how I think a Pokémon game should be. I just don't see how it can continue to exist and not have that problem.

The battle is only a fail if you think every interaction is supposed to end in a catch. But I don't think anybody plays with the intention of catching every Pokémon they battle? Sometimes you just need to pound on a Rattata to gain a level.

EDIT: And of course unlike Arceus this game should have plenty of trainers around where battling is the only option anyway.

Bro you’re saying you want them to take the absolute best part of PLA, throwing pokeballs in real time, out of the game. Nah, man. Nah. No way. I hope that shit is permanent.

I'm torn. It looks great, but at the same time I'm not ready to move on from Hisui and can't help but be a bit disappointed that it's not getting a big expansion.

I would be amazed if Pokemon made a game based on problematic countries like Brazil or China, even Australia with its deeply racist history.

I mean Spain and Portugal were the ones that mainly fucked Brazil over, so they seem to be cool with it.

This is where I’m at. I’m really interested in this, but I’m also disappointed that we won’t get a big expansion for Arceus. At the very least I hope they take a lot of the changes Arceus bought in, especially interacting with Pokémon in the world and the capture mechanics. I am pretty happy to hear it will be open world at least, as I think it works better with Pokémon’s sense of adventure than the straight linear progression of recent gens.

Shit man, I just don't think about freaking video games in such a logically organized fashion, and I even enjoy competitive multiplayer games.

Sometimes I want to battle because I'd rather weaken it first and waste fewer pokeballs. Sometimes I have a move I need to use with a different Pokemon to further fill out a dex entry. Sometimes it's 100% impossible not to battle it. Sometimes I specifically need to defeat it.

Sometimes I just feel like battling.

This take reminds me of Enel's Xenoblade videos that explain certain strategies are bad purely because there's others that are better. But if it serves the purpose I need it to, and I find it more fun... does it really matter if it's not 'optimal'? These games aren't hard. If my goal is to catch a Pokemon, and I catch it in battle, that's not a failure just because it took longer. I did what I wanted to.

Edit: Sorry if 'freaking video games' comes across as condescending. That's not my intent, but upon re-reading it struck me that it could be interpreted that way. I apologize for that.

Now I feel bad because like 90% of the cool stuff I caught in Arceus was through traditional fights with HP whittling and/or status

Yeah, I’m in team now mandatory battles minus trainers and special cutscene Pokémon.

Pokémon random battles is just grinding grinding unless you want to catch them.

One of the reasons I am enjoying Let’s Go right now is that I’m not being assaulted by a million zubats. Oh there’s a Pokémon I don’t have? Catch! Oh I want a shiny, let me catch catch catch get lots of an exp and make a shiny spawn or a rare Pokémon.

So apparently there's an orange / grapes motif going on, but how does that go with the in universe berries? Oran berries are blue and grepa berries are yellow 🤔

What I love most about PLA is the freedom the game gives you. If you don’t want to battle a Pokémon, most of the time you don’t have to. If you choose to fight it or are forced to but want to escape, you can run at any time and it never says “can’t escape!”. Nearly everything has been sped up. This game respects your time.

Huh? The game's core objectives are all centered around not ignoring them. It actively encourages choice in the matter by letting you level up the dex by any means you choose– a spread of all tasks or doubling down on a specific one. There are many pokemon who I've caught just one of, and battled for the rest of the dex.

So crazy to me that Legends Arceus is getting ditched like this so quickly.

It was built up for a year as this big new expansive Pokemon game, and then literally within a month of its release, boom, Gen 9 announced to take away all its momentum.

To be far, TPC didn't build up Arceus much at all. We were starving for info which didn't come until after BDSP, because I remember the endless questions about it being delayed or TPC "not being confident in it". The game was a pretty big mystery until the 11th hour.

Some folks online pointed out that Fuecoco is likely based on some Spanish stuffed sweet pepper dish. I’m hoping it’s final evolution is chonky lol

I wonder which part of GF developed Arceus and which is making S&V though.
I don't think they have explicit teams. they just have game leads and then split their programmers and artists
What did they do to the human models? They look like they're from a pokemon ripoff mobile game.
if those are ripoff mobile games, then what are these

The lighting is so much better than anything else we've seen from GF. I think it's the biggest improvement together with the overall density of the environments.

The way light reflects on the puddles here is really good, water in general looks very good:

And how the shading on the clothes here make them look very realistic:

Yeah, I thought Arceus was seen as a high profile release by GF but now I think they view it as a side experience like Let's Go. The good news is that they must be really confident in SV if they're okay with sidelining a game as great as Arceus.

This is gonna be my first Pokemon game, I just know it.

The human charatcers legit feel like they belong in the uncanny valley. This is such a dissapointment when Legends: Arceus JUST had fantastic human designs (and SwSh before that).

About other topics, I guess this Gen will continue the Pokemon tradition of making the female protagonist design appealing while doing the male main as bland as possible.

Totally forgot Unova! US is the role model of problematic/racist.

Likely not, they have enough stuff on their plates.

I also don't know if you were implying they helped GF before, because they haven't.

No, I was wondering if, because they are going open world, Nintendo would offer help from Monolith.

I'm thinking Sugimori isn't in charge of human designs anymore, which is definitely a bummer.

I already miss the character designs of Arceus. Everyone looked bad@$$ in that game. In SV the MCs literally look like they just got ready for school lol.

From the official website: 'battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them'. I hope this doesn't mean that throwing empty pokeballs to catch mons in real time without needing to do a pokemon battle is gone.

Trainer models always look bland, I can't talk for sure about character design before I see some NPC, namely gym leaders.

Game Freak is legendary studio in efficiency, they releasing their 7th switch game, they made a new generation in 3 years with covid, while developing another big scale game and two expansions, both releasing in the same year, insane for a studio with 150 employees

Sugimori hasn't been in charge of character design since Gen6. Yusuke Ohmura was Gen 7 and 8.
Ohmura only designed Marnie in SwSh. Sugimori was the lead of the "trainer graphics" team for SM, and a variety of artists contributed to the character designs in that game and most Pokémon games, just generally. The gym leaders in SwSh were all designed by take.

The new protagonists for SV scream Ohmura though.

I'm sure all of the outsourcing helps!

Legends: Arceus also has battling against wild Pokémon. It just means it's not like LGPE

This was such a great surprise! I do think it seems very early, but I do agree with the sentiment that we've seen Pokemon's evolution as a franchise in real tie and this does seem like a culmination of everything they got right and the wrongs they fixed in Gen 8. I think the region look beautiful and the starters are all really cute and interesting. This year truly is PACKED. Legends really did revitalize my love for the franchise so I am all in!

I'm surprised we don't have a map of the region, or even the name of the region. They unveiled both when they announced Sword and Shield.

People really need to wake up and realise that all countries have racism in their history, if there's less of that then there was no shortage of homophobia. Stop acting like there's innocent countries and problematic countries.

Edit: on a positive note, I just returned from Spain and absolutely loved it there, it's hands down the most gay friendly country I've been in and I've never felt more comfortable. So thank you Spanish folk for that! Definitely excited to see it in Pokemon.
