Pre-Release Pokémon Scarlet and Violet — Pre-release Discussion Thread (UPDATE: new trailer, see threadmarks)

I fully expect ~70 or perhaps even less. Don't think even mid gen Pokemon will be enough. We'll get #1000 in Gen X.
Well that would be super disappointing. With mid gen additions, gen 8 had 95 Pokémon. I wanted them to top that.

Regardless, it's amazing that we're already so close to number 1000. In few decades Professor Oak in the anime will be right: There will be 10.000 species of pokémon in the world!

I dropped the series after Ultra Moon but an open world with proper gyms might be enough to bring me back. I'm intrigued.

The starters are looking great - then again creature and character design were always the series' strengths. It's the overall art direction that I feel needs change, I still don't think it translates to 3D all that well, but this is the best we're gonna get on Switch.

I wonder what Scarlet and violet are supposed to represent

Why people is talking about racism in a new Pokemon announcement thread?

Genuine question right here.

Someone said Game Freak won't make regions based on Brazil or China because they were problematic. Other people pointed out UK/US etc are worse and already have regions.

This is extremely dismissive of legitimate concerns of racism, and will not be tolerated. You are receiving a three day ban. -Harina, hologram, Squiddo, Sumio Mondo
STOP. NOT EVERY DECISION NEEDS TO BE VIEWED THROUGH THE LENS OF RACE.

Let’s just enjoy video games instead of fanning the flames of another divisive topic.

This looks better than Sw/Sh
Looks better than Arceus (despite I prefer Arecus artsyle)
It is real open world

I would say they are improving, tech-wise

Fir me, I hope they are going to implement as many Arceus gameplay mechanics as possible

One day we’ll get a South American region, my dream is Patagonia but I know it’d be Brazil since that’s all South America is for most people.

I accept Fakemon usage to rid of troll account.
I'm glad we could come to a truce.

Bro I didn't do shit, all I said was I wanted to see some non-European regions and was told that is verboten because the global south is problematic. It's not my fault they made an easily dunkable argument and apparently got a troll to register to fight back.

Also there's never gonna be a bad time to talk about politics in gaming. Racism is only "divisive" for racists, anyway.

I think Bolivia would be my pick but there's so much diversity and iconic fixtures in Brazil that it would be a missed opportunity, IMO.

Mexico is also very diverse and would have a lot to offer.

Bro, I wasn’t calling you out specifically. I’m asking for ALL OF US to move from this topic.

Plenty of people play video games to escape the topic of politics, racism, etc.. if you want to talk about that go make a thread specifically about. I don’t think this is the right time and place to talk about it.

We got Gen 9. Let’s be happy.

Unless it gets debunked in like an interview, I will believe that 2021 was supposed to have 2 games not 2022. BDSP was supposed to be a summer game and Legends the holiday game, but the pandemic pushed them back.

One thing to note is that a lot of SV's development would have been remotely from home due to the pandemic.

Gonna post what I said on the other site and add a bit to it:

I wish this was more inspired by al Andalus specifically. It covers the Iberian peninsula, but it will be something non-Western finally. Making it focused on science, and perhaps even making it take place in the past. It would be far more interesting than being inspired by a western culture. It would give us more poc's as well.

Would also be very awesome to get Pokémon or elements in the game of astronomy, surgery, medicine etc.

A professor who specialises in Pokémon medicine or something would be cool.

On the trailer:
Game looks pretty rough, but that's to be expected by now. It'll probably be better by release.

Environments look better than Legends for sure, towns and indoor look hideous. Except that lone house though.

Pokémon still look soulless, but they actual textures on them now. They don't look like plastic toys walking around.

Seems like artstyle changed? Trainers look hideous, and I'm not talking about their outfits.

I wonder why they didn't show any battles. It'll probably be seamless like Legends, but they better not go back to the old style. I'm still cautious..

They're cutting Pokémon it seems? I thought they started with dexit because they had to put all the models from scratch into the games. By now they should have done a huge chunk of them already, why would you not put in what you have already worked on? Of course, we don't know this is the case for sure...

I really don't like that they're making gen 9 already though, AND we just had 2 Pokémon games recently. This doesn't bode well for the quality of the games. Still happy for those that were waiting on this.
Why can't they wait till next year? Why can't they make a new game/gen without new Pokémon. They know they're creating a problem by adding more and more Pokémon to the already high amount that we have. Heck, they don't even need a new region imo. Oh well...

Seems like Legends was indeed a proof of concept thing that they made. It always felt like it to me, it had good ideas that is leading into this. I hope this isn't just Legends mixed with old style Pokémon, I hope it's another big step forward.
What they've done with the Pokémon models for Legends and seemingly SV is much closer to the sort of upgrades that they were implying they did to the models in Sword and Shield.
Genuinely curious with all the concerns about crunch I'm hearing – what is that history? Is there truly reason to believe there is a poor work environment at GF versus them having actually scaled up their team enough to handle this?

EDIT: Not doubting it whatsoever, just curious if there's been any speaking out
There's not really any direct evidence for crunch, but there's plenty that the games have been getting rushed out before they're ready. Game Freak has shown a very consistent pattern of overestimating their ability to deliver these games as intended on a 3 year cycle, with a giant uptick in obviously cut or absent content since they moved to that timeframe. The most obvious example of this is Sword and Shield, where the entire story starts falling apart towards the end and there's a very obvious drop in quality in the second half of the gyms from the first, among other things. I don't want to make any assumptions about whether or not this leads to crunch, but the impact on the games by itself is significant and enough to cause concern about the release date by itself.

I vote Venezuela :p

Desert dunes? Check! Mountains? Check! Lakes and forests? Check! Snow? Check! Valleys? Check! Rainforest? Check! Caribbean seaside and islands? Check!

I have a question, if it meant having an extremely limited dex, would you want a top tier graphics wise Pokemon game?
Nope, gameplay over graphics for me, always.

I'm fine with the current dex size/graphics situation they have though since the improvements made are really solid.

Never. Especially after seeing how "top tier graphics" games take years to develop. I want my 3 year intervals between gens. I'm ok with limited dex even with lower quality graphics.

The trade off for me if there's an extremely limited dex is not graphics, but animations and complexity of pokemon designs. PLA is already there, with how expressive the mons are both in and out of battles, but there are still rooms for improvement: cross-species interactions and more overworld behaviors. The latter can also be integrated with the nature system for even more variety and make each mon truly unique with its own personality.

To answer your question, no.

But then again, Nintendo is in a position where they could easily fund a great looking game, even if it's for mobile or PC.

After playing PLA I was dreading going back to SwSh style , happy to see they are updating the mainline game with some PLA influence

Overall. This reveal is shown to be received much more positively.

Helps that Legends was a surprised to many and that it’s been outright called Open World.

Just need the starter evolutions to see where the direction goes. Happy or sad lol

John Halo is here to tell us a country governed by Boris Johnson is not racist, a country with a new scandal involving racist football fans every year
Isn't that the guy who made the postbox and robbers comment? What a horrible piece of crap he seems reading that article, yikes.

Ignoring the racist troll, can't people say they want regions based on non-Western regions after getting 4 regions based on western ones?

Yeah, looks like it. They added animations with Legends and now new and improved textures. I still think they have a lot of work to do to make them more part of the world. Like, have Pokémon eat and drink in the wild, climb trees and cliffs, graze from the fields, move in hordes, stuff like that.

Me personally, no, I don't care that much about graphics. Shit, I'd go back to sprite-based gameplay if it meant bigger regions and campaigns.
After the Sinnoh remakes were more traditional style than in the style of the Galar games, anything certainly seems possible these days!

Ok so battling seems to be seamless in the world itself.

Now I'm wondering if battling will be required to catch a wild Pokemon, or if we're still going to be able to sneak up on a Pokemon in the wild and catch it by throwing a Pokeball without battling at all.

I'm also wondering if Pokemon will attack us in the overworld, and if we'll have evasive movement options like the dodge.

To be honest... I hope battles are mandatory as soon as a Pokémon sees you. And the out of battle ball throwing is gone. I'm almost certain it won't be, but the worst part of arceus is easily that wild Pokémon are basically worthless because you're expected to catch so many, and that the optimal solution to basically all the wild Pokémon otherwise is just to completely ignore them.

I think if it wasn't for Legends, opinions on this would be much more mixed. People might have been excited for open world but more skeptical that GF could pull it off

Not that there aren't concerns about that but they bought themselves a lot of goodwill after Arceus

I'd argue that was always the case, running or using Repels was always the optimal solution to wild Pokemon, and actually being engaged was just an annoyance. Like, I don't think the games were made any better because you had to fight so many damn Zubats in caves

Legends made me actually want to engage with wild Pokemon for the first time, and also forced me to engage in a lot of situations (thanks to aggressive Pokemon) without it feeling forced.
