forest for the treesGlad this thread's been created and it's going strong!
Question: What's better? The DKC games on SNES or DKC on GBA? On one hand, the SNES games have the best audio and visuals by far. On the other hand, the GBA versions have more content, link cable support, mini games, more collectibles, and other QoL improvements.
I think that DKC3 on GBA is better than the SNES version given it's got a brand new world and a new David Wise OST.
Diddy Kong Racing on NSO when?

Honestly, my biggest worry is the inevitable backlash that will ensue if it turns out that EPD Tokyo scrapped what Vicarious Visions was working on and made a 2D game instead. After Tropical Freeze was unfairly maligned for being a 2D platformer, I'm not looking forward to going through that again.I was afraid this was gonna happen. Just hope the internet doesn't get upset if the next DK is 2D again.
I'm surprised the one thing these outlets are getting right is that VV game is cancelled and has been for some time. Knowing how knee-jerk some of them are they will jump the gun without reading and say "Vicarious Visions IS Still developing a 3D DK!" Which would make zero sense, especially today.Wow, they're spreading misinformation to 1.8 million followers!
First of all, we don't know if EPD's Donkey Kong game is "open-world"—only that Vicarious Visions was working on an open-world Donkey Kong game before development was shelved and handed off to a new team at EPD Tokyo. It could be 3D; it could be 2D; it could be a mix of both. Furthermore, I'm not sure why these outlets are attributing the report to Nintendo Prime when people in the Donkey Kong community have been talking about this game for like, four years. All he did was regurgitate a few posts from this forum and nonchalantly claim that somebody showed him "40 seconds of footage" of the cancelled Vicarious Visions project—a claim I'm admittedly skeptical of.
DK also came out at a time when 2D was very devalued due to the indie boom of 2D platformers especially at $50 (which was only in the west) so the game was met with pretty obvious backlash towards that. Mix that with Metroid fans who desperately wanted a win after Other M and you had a recipe for disaster. Those reactions to TF are always strange to me lol, they’re like the complete opposite reaction I’d have to a new DK game being announced.
I feel like there won’t be as much backlash for this DK game though, from what I understand the backlash to TF was mainly from Metroid fans who wanted Retro to make another MP game. Not that all Metroid fans were like this, but some were I guess. Now that Retro is making another MP game, my guess is there won’t be as much resistance to a new DK game.
Tbh though, I don’t really care about how much backlash there is. Like, I hope Retro makes another DK game some day, and I really don’t care how much the mature crowd throws fits about it online lol.
Definitely agree here. Now we have "Ugh this should have been Odyssey 2" instead of "Ugh this should have been Metroid", but this time its before the game has even been announced. In reality it's pretty common sense that a 3D Mario is ALWAYS being worked on, and the next one will probably come out within the next few years. Whether it's Odyssey 2 or something new is up in the air, though there was that survey leak that claimed Odyssey 2 was in the works and had pretty much completely correct info about Sonic Frontiers as well. And either way the amount of ambition put into Mario has no effect on the ambition put into DK, where it ends up 2D or 3D.Unfortunately, this is how the Internet works. What's amazing to me is that amid all of the EPD DK stuff that broke in 2021, they completely buried the lead. The lead was what Hyle at DK Vine reported where allegedly a new team is making this EPD DK game, and that they'd probably become a new dedicated DK developer from now on. But that's not what was reported. It was the clickbait headline, "The team behind Mario Odyssey is making DK" to make it seem like they're making DK instead of Mario haha smh

This woulda been amazing actually, wowIn a parallel universe where Wii U launched with Splatoon instead of 2D Mario and had Xenoblade X and Bayonetta 2 published shortly after the launch
Not too far from what we got with Switch! They learned their lesson. This woulda been amazing actually, wow
Yeah, I agree with this.I think Tropical Freeze was the right game at the wrong time. There was nothing wrong with Tropical Freeze per se (nor with the general notion of Retro developing another 2D DK game), but at the time, Nintendo was seriously in need of a ground-breaking "wow" game, and most of their lineup included of 2D platforms. Even the 3D Mario game was a "3D but 2D" platform. The platform was so saturated with 2D(-ish) platforms that none of them really had the chance to shine (even 3D World, I think, has been received a lot better on Switch).
In a parallel universe where Wii U launched with Splatoon instead of 2D Mario and had Xenoblade X and Bayonetta 2 published shortly after the launch, Tropical Freeze would have been received much better.
I think that's the sentiment shared by 99% of the people disappointed by the Tropical Freeze announcement (but who then likely played and enjoyed the game). Then there is the 1% with hyperbolic reactions. This 1% greatly overlaps with the "Nintendo should make MATURE REAL GAMES" crowd.
This headline always got me the most:
"Another damn Donkey Kong Country" said with such exasperation as if it was the 10th one Retro made even though it was their second. It was a sequel to a three-year-old game that sold remarkably well on Wii, after the series was mostly relegated to spin-offs for a decade. What exactly did they expect and why were they so frustrated? I don't get it at all.
I have a strong theory that the current EPD DK game will have multiple playable characters. Something besides Donkey Kong.
I could even see a scenario where Banjo & Kazooie cameo in the new DK game. Anything is possible even if it's extremely unlikely!
Speaking of playable characters, I'll toss out on an old idea of mine that I'd love for EPD to adopt.
Hardcore DK fans are aware of Rare's lore within the DKC games. Cranky is the "OG" DK, and our current DK is Junior grown-up (or DK III to some, it's confusing). I've always been a fan of Cranky's character being an older arcade DK, but never really liked that Junior as a character was basically erased. Diddy is a great replacement, but I feel there's always going to be confusion among casual fans on who DK Jr. is.
So my idea to please both sides would be to simply introduce a brand new DK Jr. (an actual DK III) in a new Donkey Kong game. This Junior would be an entirely new character but with the design of DK Jr. Think how Bowser Jr. was introduced in Mario Sunshine. He essentially is just Baby Bowser's design with a bib, I'd say do that with DK Jr.
Plus, how cool would it be to have a DK game where you could play as DK, Diddy, Dixie and Junior?
I remember seeing this online around the 40th anniversary. Good stuff! Also, I'd like to share some artwork I did for DK's 40th anniversary a few years ago! Still very proud of the work I put into this.
Ah, you are the artist behind that artwork? Welcome to the forum! I love that you celebrated the whole DK legacy -- not Rare DK, nor Arcade DK or modern DK, but everything DK.Also, I'd like to share some artwork I did for DK's 40th anniversary a few years ago! Helper Kong from DK Jungle BeatGreat artwork, but who is that little monkey in between Funky and DK?

So this new DK Jr. would essentially be the son of DK and Candy? That'd be interesting, you don't really see most Nintendo protagonists having kids like that.
Nintendo kind of has limited options when it comes to parents. Whenever they celebrated Father's Day or wanted to show an example of parenting, they always had to use Bowser, which is funny. I am all for firmly making DK a dad in canon again. So this new DK Jr. would essentially be the son of DK and Candy? Tropical Freeze was what made me get the Wii U. I just got my 360 when the Wii U came out so I was fine with waiting several years to get the Wii U. During E3 2013 I was really hyped for MK8, 3D Worlrd and SSB4 but Smash was going on the 3DS anyways and I was willing to skip MK8 and 3D World until later but as soon as I finished the DKC trailer I started saving for the system so I could play Tropical Freeze day one lmao
Not sure why "sequel to Tropical Freeze" is losing here. And DKC 4 is Returns.

Unfortunately for DKJr, he doesn't work in the present canon.
Hence why he appears the way he does in Mario Kart Tour.
They'll present him as an out-of-time nostalgia homage throwback, but either he is the current Donkey Kong all grown up, or they'd have to reintroduce him as an adult. It's not worth it
Tbh, I've noticed some division between DKC fans on this topic, it seems like there are at least some fans who don't like the direction Retro DK took and want another game in the style of the SNES games. Personally I have the opposite opinion, I like the Rare DKC games but am much more a fan of the Retro ones.
Either way, I don't really like the idea of disregarding Returns/TF and calling a new game "DKC4," like somehow Returns/TF aren't DKC games. Regardless of which games people prefer, these are all still DKC games.
Anyway, I don't have a Twitter, but for what it's worth my vote would go towards a DKTF sequel. Not sure how much that would make a difference lol, but it's 1 more vote for that option I guess.
Yes to all of this but can we also include ancillary Kongs (Chunky, Lanky, short Tiny)?Speaking of playable characters, I'll toss out on an old idea of mine that I'd love for EPD to adopt.

Well.... they're not wrong about one of those. It's simple, really. It primarily came from Metroid fans who, in their intense jealousy, believed that Metroid was both a better selling franchise than DK, and superior in quality to DK. Completely wrong on both counts of course. None of them had any idea that Retro was about to release their best game by far.
As of 2017 the Donkey Kong IP has internal brand management oversight. Confirmed by the Mario + Rabbids team that actually worked with them. So there are certain guidelines and oversight on how certain elements of the series can be distributed and portrayed.I don't think the "DK canon" is something that actually matters. If they want to put DK Jr in, they will. It doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense, it's Donkey Kong.
Anything that gets me a great new 2D game is my pick! I see Returns as being "DKC4", so really this would either be "DKC6" or "Jungle Beat 2", or something entirely different.
Which is not necessarily a bad thing. Thankfully because of the new DK team at Nintendo, the Kongs are not forced to wear silly costumes in Mario Kart Tour due to the restraints by the internal brand management for DK.
Honestly, this style of misreporting makes me wish the VV project remained unknown to the public -- at least, until the time was right, NDA expired, and the developers could openly discuss specifics without fear. Discussion was being had amongst people for a long while, no one felt the need to share specifics since the project was dead, the curiosity factor of what could have been was discussed for a while, the future of the series and such.Wow, they're spreading misinformation to 1.8 million followers!

Quality is subjective, but Donkey Kong Country Returns outsold all three Metroid Prime games combined and yet people acted like it was a baffling decision on Retro's part for wanting to take another crack at DKC. The vitriolic reaction to Tropical Freeze’s announcement—and the ensuing conspiracy theories that Iwata "forced" Retro to make it against their will—is possibly the most embarrassing moment in the history of online Nintendo fandom. Can you really blame Retro for not wanting to touch the IP again after that? At least we got New Funky Mode! It's simple, really. Now, we have bad information spreading & conflation. And the victim will be the Nintendo DK game. People are going to set an unreal expectation due to the stories based on some truths and based on misinformation and then get mad if (or when) the new DK game isn't what they wanted/expected.
On the matter of the claim of seeing footage, I side with you. I'm skeptical of the claim, as there were no specifics mentioned from the footage that differed from the concept already discussed. Speculating the DK game from Nintendo could be a launch title for Switch 2 making headline is just poor form of the outlets reporting things, as well.
