I mean I dont find it any more sexist than something like Style-Savvy and people love that

I don't think this game in particular is sexist (it just seems to be aimed at children), just the situation of mostly making games aimed at women be games aimed more at young girls is a little frustrating.

really like Peach's new voice direction in this too btw, hopefully that carries forward to the rest of the Mario series as well

When I said it was stereotypically girly, I didn’t mean “stereotypically” as a negative, or to say it’s sexist.

I largely include that word to indicate that while I’m using gendered terms, and labeling certain types of content as masculine or feminine, I’m doing so strictly in the context of those traditional or stereotypical boxes.

I understand that plenty of men also like things that are feminine, and always have, and that even people don’t necessarily fit neatly into concepts of female or male. I’m non-binary myself.

But it’s still necessary to discuss certain things in terms of how they fit into traditional or stereotypical boxes, as long as we have certain types of content being treated different based on how they fit into those boxes. So if I need to discuss them that way, I’m always going to include “stereotypical” or “traditional” alongside “girly”, “masculine”, “feminine”, etc.

Having a playable female character is only one element of what I’m talking about. I’m also talking about any time the actual game itself is more stereotypically girly or feminine, then there’s a tendency for those to have lower budgets, more limited scope, and target young children more directly than that all-ages approach a character like Mario gets.

To a lot of these companies, stereotypical girly-girl stuff is strictly for 6-year-olds.

This isn’t just a Nintendo problem, or even just a video game problem. Look at a company like Lego. When they make licensed sets for Batman, there’s a wide range of age groups being targeted. There’s something for everyone, from toys for toddlers to play with on the floor, to collectors’ display pieces with thousands of parts, price tags in the hundreds of dollars, etc.

But for anything overtly feminine, it was largely all relegated to something like the “Friends” line, with simple builds, aimed at the under-10 crowd.

Anything neutral or traditionally masculine could be for any age, but anything traditionally feminine was only for children. It’s only been in recent years that Lego has started to acknowledge that maybe 40-year-old women would like some Disney sets too. Or that maybe some of their adult audience that isn’t female might also still like complex and expensive feminine things, because people don’t fit neatly into boxes.

It’s all related, and it’s something many of us have been frustrated with for decades. It isn’t just about this one Peach game, it’s about a long history of a lot of things. But this Peach game just happens to provide an appropriate space to get into it all.

These are discussions that were also happening last year, around the release of the Barbie movie, and how the numbers it did put a spotlight on a hungry and underserved audience. There are lots of fronts for these discussions to come up, and this is just one of them.

I think your own perception of these games is part of the issue.

Kirby’s Forgotten Land is one of the best new games on Switch.

A Mario game .... being shallow?

From this same thread:
Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land are my two favorite Switch exclusives, and they’re catching so many strays in this thread.
I wish this Peach game looked anywhere near the level of those other games. Or that a separate Peach game on that level could exist alongside the one we’re getting.

My guy, how do you know for certain this is not on that level?
I never claimed to be certain of anything. I watched the trailers, and came away with an impression. Same thing everybody else does when they watch game trailers.

I’m certainly not going to lose any sleep over the possibility that something about the game might be different from my current impression of it. There’s nothing at stake here. If new information at a later time makes me feel differently, I make that adjustment and move on.

I will say I do think the website clips do a better job of displaying the outfits and how they will be applied to the scenarios.

For instance you see the following with Ninja Peach:

  • Hiding in the grass to sneak up on an enemy
  • Blending in with a wall to sneak on an enemy
  • Use a bamboo stick to breathe while walking underwater
  • Wall jump
  • Parkour against a wall in the background
  • Apparently summon and control a massive tidal wave
I'm sure there's other stuff I've missed as well.

Yes the gameplay section of ninja Peach on the site really showcases some fun diversity and creativity.

From left to right they appear to be: Kung-Fu, Ninja, Mermaid, Gentlewoman Thief, Ice Skater, Swordfighter, Patissier, Detective, Cowgirl and Superhero.

Oh, my bad lol. Don't mind me.
Edit: Speaking of TOSE, outside of Super Princess Peach, have they worked on any Nintendo related IP since then? Because if not, then I highly doubt it's them.
Again, there’s a difference between their usual hidden grunt work and claiming the whole game for themselves.

Also, this is not a sequel to Super Princess Peach at all. Other than starring Peach, Showtime and SPP are completely unrelated in every other area.

TOSE works on everything. Well, maybe not everything, but they work on a lot of Japanese games as an uncredited support team. I think we have proof of them lending assistance on several Switch-era Nintendo games, though: porting the Switch version of Breath of the Wild, additional tech work on Splatoon 2, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Famicom Detective Club remakes, the recent WarioWare titles, etc. Whether they'd actually be a lead developer on a Nintendo game again (with Showtime being that game), who knows.

Friend of mine really wished for a vampire world, gonna have to be the bad news bear tomorrow. Otherwise good selection, though I thought there were twelve worlds, not just ten

The bottom right statue closest to the viewer is also a good look at the "sci-fi hero" helmet one

the statues look to me to be ???, swordfighter, ninja, patissier, detective, cowgirl, superhero, and ???

one of which is probably Kung Fu but the other one is giving top hat to me

Sure, they can codevelop this in their own shadowy way as well. I just wouldn’t expect them to be credited as the main dev. The last game that can be called their own was released in 2008.

The top hat is the thief, it's being worn on the poster too (very large, unless you really zoom in you might misinterpret that silhouette).
Nice! I totally did lol

it'd be great if Peach played both the detective and the thief

Edit: also, seeing the one you referred to as "mermaid" closer up, it sort of looks like it might be Arabian nights themed outfit to tho

There's like a fez on the head and something like a palm tree towards the top? they look like they have gold coins flying around them as they dance.

really that's the hardest one to make anything of imo

I have the feeling this game will be very praised for its variety and creative in its design/gameplay mechanics/visuals but criticized to due to its length. 10 different sections of 1-1:30 hour long (at most) each mean a game with 10-15 hour and unless it has post-game content or something like minigames, I feel this will be its heavy weakness.

Definitely the hardest one to place by far, but the Castons (that's their name, from the Japanese site) have very rounded feet and that particular poster seems to have them ending at a very fine point (which I interpret as fins).

Speaking of, the JP site has this screen that does not align with any Caston designs seen so far; could be another one for Detective (we haven't seen any enemy designs in that world yet either) or Thief given the backdrop. There's also artwork featuring a bat enemy that I believe has not been seen either.

At first I thought there may be additional clues in the Grape posters that appear in this image and this video but they appear to just be the same two repeated.

I'm really curious how this one turns out. I greatly appreciate the gameplay insights in this thread. Depending on execution I wonder if we could be looking at Nintendo's equivalent to Puppeteer. That's the closest game immediately coming to mind. As for the unrevealed website section, maybe there's a multiplayer mode of some type, or amiibo support.

I'm still split on the dev. I'm leaning towards Good-Feel despite the lack of craft aesthetic. I also like the theory about Tokyo EPD making this akin to how they did Captain Toad but that could make this their 2D action game and then I'm slightly concerned what that would mean for MonkEPD. In either scenario I'm confident in a worthwhile game and hoping there's some unrevealed depth or replay value. The heart medal brings Yoshi's mellow mode to mind.

If it's neither of those devs, though, I'm not quite sure what to expect. Hopefully it'll turn out well, I'm very curious.

10 different gameplay style might be a bit too many, tbh if it works like a mario game or even Luigi’s mansion 3 where each costume works as it’s own world with multiple levels it could be reaaly good, but with 10 different costumes it might end up kind of shallow, or maybe the game is actually 30 hours long with every costume having a huge macro level.
Seeing this is giving me live a live vibes tbh with all it’s different styles.

Sometimes it’s nice to have games designed for a younger audience. My 4 year old absolutely loves the Kirby and Good Feel Yoshi games. This looks like another game he’d love to play as well. There’s plenty of games aimed at older gamers without adding to it with a game about a transforming Princess.

There's plenty of games aimed at kids as well. If a jumping plumber can be designed to be for everyone then so can a princess. So don't really agree with this argument.

But I get what you mean, everyone likes different product and as someone who doesn't have kids I'm going to be less interested if a game is aimed at young kids obviously. I believe that games aimed at kids/everyone can also have a level of complexity like Mario Odyssey or Mario Wonder. I'd rather it be that type of game instead of what modern Yoshi is for example.

For FDC they got credited because they co-own the copyright of the first game. It was a Nintendo / TOSE co-production back then.

Some people put the clips from the website in various twitter videos. I think it shows the gameplay more.

It does show more depth then what is shown in the normal trailer (Ninja seems to have a very fun action moveset) so hopefully it is a sign that the game has more to offer with every outfit.

Lol somehow didn't put up the rest (it's the same twitter thread but I know some people can't access it anymore)

It does seem like each theater will emulate a different gameplay style. I did lol at the Professor Layton-esque finger pointing.
