Pre-Release Princess Peach: Showtime! — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Kirby has some explorable levels and collectables to give replay value and depth to the simplistic combat and low difficulty. Peach has yet to show anything like that so people are, understandably, more aprehensive
Yeah, instead they showed more gameplay variety than the average Kirby game. (y)

Still looks like a pretty small game. Can't say I'm too surprised but small games are always welcomed. Plus, this could be a good game for younger audiences. I don't know if I'll give it a shot at launch but down the line, maybe. Kinda just want to see what this game ends up being before I spend money lol.

We still don't know much about it though.
I mean that's kinda the problem, no? Granted we probably have a direct coming up but that trailer was a nothingburger. It really just shows that Peach acts in certain set pieces as the main character but almost in a borderline minigame way, at least for a couple of the transformations.

Just re-watched the trailers for this game and it looks exceptionally bland. The trailers make it seem as if it's a collection of minigames that have no cohesion

This was probably the best-looking trailer for the game, but this still feels like a 7/10 spin-off. I can definitely see why they didn't save this for Switch 2 now.

Also maybe it's just me, but it kind of feels like this wasn't always meant to be in the Mario universe. It feels more like Nintendo or whatever dev made this had a prototype idea for an action platformer based around theatre performances, and they then turned it into a Peach-focused game so it would sell better.

That's fair but ultimately just the direction they picked for this particular title based on their target audience. I don't see why this can't also be a high-quality title just because it doesn't have some perceived depth. As for more complex stuff, Metroid and Bayonetta as the female-led franchises they've championed are squarely aimed at older audiences, with Bayonetta Origins skewing a little younger.

Kirby is also aimed at kids and pretty shallow and nobody loses sleep over it.

No one is going to lose sleep over this game. It's just that it would be a shame if this title is going to stand next to Yoshi and Kirby instead of next to Mario and Luigi's Mansion. And Mario already is a franchise designed to be played by everyone.

No shame in standing next to Kirby. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is vastly superior to Luigi's Mansion 3 (imo).

I just realized this game was suppose to be shown at an event that was canceled in Tokyo. Hence the random twitter post.

Honestly what's the perceived difference between this game and Luigi's Mansion in depth? That the combat may not be omnipresent? It seems similar in structure. I feel like there would be less anxiety over this if it was Wario World 2 or whatever vs. the girly Princess Peach. I'll eat crow if it releases and turns out awful but I'd be really surprised.

Game is giving off some strong mini-games vibes. Like a single player Mario Party without the board.

I’ll be there day one regardless because it does look fun.
I got those vibes, too. Like those late 90s / early 00s tie-in games that were a glorified collection of minigames.

Not sold on the game. I remain cautiously optimistic because it's Nintendo, and there are Good Feel vibes.

Luigi's Mansion has a cohesive structure, gameplay-wise from the beginning to the end. Here, it seems every power-up has its own gameplay mechanics. Each level might be its own game.

It was also an easier game than Mario games. This doesn't look like it'll be in the scope of Forgotten Land anyway. Looks more like your regular 2D Kirby or Yoshi's paper craft game.

If Luigi’s Mansion is the bar in terms of complexity this will have an easy time clearing it.

The depth of Luigi’s Mansion 3 doesn’t come from the size of the environments or structure, it’s about the density in those environments. Even in a very small space, there’s so much to poke around at. I don’t see anything of that nature going on with this Peach game.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land are my two favorite Switch exclusives, and they’re catching so many strays in this thread.

Sometimes it’s nice to have games designed for a younger audience. My 4 year old absolutely loves the Kirby and Good Feel Yoshi games. This looks like another game he’d love to play as well. There’s plenty of games aimed at older gamers without adding to it with a game about a transforming Princess.

I guess I don't see that as a bad thing, I should probably force myself to stay out of these threads maybe even post-release because I'll get heated defending it lol

Well, to be fair, if you showcase a bunch of Wario's transformations from the Land games and nothing else, you would get a similar feeling. It is still too soon to declare the game shallow. I'm open-minded and if the game is good I'll be happy! But what they show doesn't look very interesting to me.

no reason it can't be both. that's usually what Nintendo puts out. we just haven't seen much of the game despite coming so soon. we don't know how all the parts connect together. could be fun in short bursts or be very front heavy. we just have no idea

No one is saying to not make this game. The problem is that Nintendo has only ever made two Peach games, the last of which was almost 20 years ago, and both of them were targeting a younger audience than a Mario game typically does. This happens a lot, where anything overtly/stereotypically “girly” tends to only get made for young children.

The solution I’m asking for isn’t to stop making Peach games for young children, it’s to stop exclusively making Peach games for young children.

If Nintendo was actually making all-ages games starring women more often (Metroid and Bayonetta are not in that space), the wants and needs of so many different kinds of people wouldn’t have to fall onto the shoulders of this one single game by default.

whatever man this is Super Princess Peach 2

SPP1 on DS is no lie my 2nd favorite platformer behind Tropical Freeze

edit: 2D platformer

I think each stage is gonna be like a Paper Mario chapter

So each one gets a bespoke scenario, some of them more action-platformer heavy, some more puzzle focused, with the lobby of the theater the primary hub zone.

But more importantly, by staring at the image of the outside of theater that is towards the bottom of this page of the website, I've deduced that there are still at least two Peach occupations left to see: two posters that seem to indicate an Ice Skater in a cold northern lights area on the left side of the theater & all the way to the right is a poster that screams Anime-style Super Hero

There's also what looks like a Paragliding mini-game segment for Detective Peach

also just above this image on that page there is a some more footage of each stage. Definitely gives off more Paper Mario-y chapter vibes than anything Luigi's Mansion to me

My guess is either Good Feel or Hal Labs. There's is something very Kirby about this game imo

After the first trailer I was totally on board. Following this one, I'm not sure anymore.

I guess I'm gonna need more info to make up my mind.

To add to this, I think each stage/scenario will have an encore or a showstopper finale which really leans into the theme. The duels in the first trailer and the horse riding section in this one might be examples of this.

I think the devs are aiming for variety as opposed to depth with this game. Feels a little bit akin to Barbie in the "she can be anything" vibe, and I wonder if that's intentional.

Peach was playable in 3D World and Wonder and was a great character to play as. The entirety of both games can be played as her. Those are games aimed at everyone.

As relates to this game, the concept of the game may have always been for younger gamers and then Peach was later decided as the main character.

I think Peach looks like a great star for this game. It’ll also set a good example for these children that a woman can lead in a video game just as a man can.

Just my view as someone with young children who are fans of Kirby, Yoshi and Peach. I find that gamers want games aimed at Kids to be aimed at everyone and games aimed at everyone to be more difficult…

I agree, they want Peach to be viewed as more than just a Princess, she can be anything now.

Tho I wouldn't rule out a final area where you must use each stage's power to defeat Grape herself

Also, total baseless speculation here, but does anyone else think Grape might be using Peach's crown to give herself a Princess Grape look and power set?(Umbrella, turnips, float etc.) I just assume she lured Peach here in the first place to steal her powers by snatching that crown

It’s hard to say given what we know, but it definitely seems like they are aiming for a “each level has different gameplay entirely aside from a few cohesive controls” approach. Might explain why it has been such a hard game to pin down.

In that sense, maybe its more comparable to something like a Pilotwings? Different stages that have their own quirks and control schemes? There’s probably a more comparable game but that was the first example of a game like that I could think of…

Having a playable female character is only one element of what I’m talking about. I’m also talking about any time the actual game itself is more stereotypically girly or feminine, then there’s a tendency for those to have lower budgets, more limited scope, and target young children more directly than that all-ages approach a character like Mario gets.

To a lot of these companies, stereotypical girly-girl stuff is strictly for 6-year-olds.

This isn’t just a Nintendo problem, or even just a video game problem. Look at a company like Lego. When they make licensed sets for Batman, there’s a wide range of age groups being targeted. There’s something for everyone, from toys for toddlers to play with on the floor, to collectors’ display pieces with thousands of parts, price tags in the hundreds of dollars, etc.

But for anything overtly feminine, it was largely all relegated to something like the “Friends” line, with simple builds, aimed at the under-10 crowd.

Anything neutral or traditionally masculine could be for any age, but anything traditionally feminine was only for children. It’s only been in recent years that Lego has started to acknowledge that maybe 40-year-old women would like some Disney sets too. Or that maybe some of their adult audience that isn’t female might also still like complex and expensive feminine things, because people don’t fit neatly into boxes.

It’s all related, and it’s something many of us have been frustrated with for decades. It isn’t just about this one Peach game, it’s about a long history of a lot of things. But this Peach game just happens to provide an appropriate space to get into it all.

These are discussions that were also happening last year, around the release of the Barbie movie, and how the numbers it did put a spotlight on a hungry and underserved audience. There are lots of fronts for these discussions to come up, and this is just one of them.

with Ninja, Kung Fu, Cowgirl, and Swordfighter(and also potentially anime super hero) Peach Showtime is also giving off strong "a Live A Live fan made this" vibes lol

There’s nothing bad about the Peach game being comparable to Yoshi and Kirby, instead of Mario and Luigi. It’s how Nintendo saw fit to utilize Peach in a standalone video game.

Personally, I’m not getting the game, but I welcome its inclusion in the Mario brand. Hopefully it does well and warrants more games and an evolution of whatever they’re doing with it.

I mean this is far less stereotypical than Peachs last game for sure

Yeah, it looks okay but at this point I'm not on board. What they've shown so far is clearly targeting a very young audience, and not in a "lol-kiddy girl game" way, but in that it just seems to be lacking any type of depth or complexity. I'm trying to keep a tighter budget on gaming this year and that just won't really cut it for a full price release for me.

This one is the Barbie brand of “girls can have any job, and playing dress-up is fun”. Which is still stereotypical, but it’s a much better look than her last game, where you could practically hear the pitch meeting where someone said “what do girls do? They get super emotional at the drop of a hat!”

I reckon the final transformation might literally be Princess Peach, as all the transformations have "X Peach" as their moniker.

Presumably Peach losing her crown has some significance, so maybe getting it back will lead to some endgame transformation for the final boss.

anyone figure out what the closed off part of the website might be about?

They clearly haven't shown all there is to know about this game and are likely saving that part for the Direct trailer, but I wonder what could merit having an entire section all to it's own like that?

The Switch 2 enchantments.

Yeah in all honesty, I'm not sure what makes people worried so much because this seems fine. Luigi's Mansion 3 is the closest analogue to this and I don't see this being that far removed from that gameplay-wise. This is not a diss against Luigi's Mansion, but rather a question to think about regarding what appeals to you with Luigi's Mansion.

I'm liking what I'm seeing and this could certainly be a fun low-stress romp over a weekend or a week. I don't think it's worth $60 for me so probably get it on the first sale that kicks it to $50 or less depending on how reviews go.

Am I alone in still not really having a sense of the gameplay loop?

Like, the ninja and swordfighter stuff look pretty straightforwardly platform-y, but the pastry one just looks like a minigame to me and I'm not sure how the Sherlock Holmes outfit translates into gameplay
My impression for the last two trailers is that each stage or section of the game is going to be focused on Peach and one of the costumes. There's not going to be a typical Mario or even Kirby style powerup system. It's bespoke gameplay all the way here. As other people have said:

Japanese website is up and the Transformations page has more footage of each setpiece / costume / gameplay; from what I see, it’s not hugely engrossing but I think it'll still carry enough gameplay at least within each set (agree that things do seem more like an omnibus rather than focusing on a core moveset with set specific additions).
I think each stage is gonna be like a Paper Mario chapter

Princess Peach Super Star
This is a very good comparison point.

Not sure why people expected this to be more than an easy breezy title. From the start this looked like it's targeting a casual/younger audience or people looking for a chill experience.
Yea, this honestly looks like it might be a good contender as a "primer" for people new to gaming (similar to how Spore tried to do it on the PC side with each "stage" of gameplay being a simplified take on completely different genre). It could be a good companion piece to say Kirby or Yoshi which I think are Nintendo's some of Nintendo's more "chill" franchises.

TOSE is definitely a bigger contender than both NLG and GoodFeel, but I wouldn't count out someone previously worked with Nintendo before: Dimps, Ganbarion...
Wasn't TOSE the original dev on Super Princess Peach?
