Pre-Release Princess Peach: Showtime! — Pre-release Discussion Thread

I'd concur with what people are saying w.r.t. a trailer in January. If we consider the Kirby and the Forgotten Land trailer, which revealed the Evolved Copy Abilities alongside two-player co-op, I'd expect a similar showing in January: details of a new mechanic or two. That said, I doubt Nintendo will want to reveal all of Peach's transformations pre-release, so perhaps the rumoured shop and/or structure might be elaborated on?

We're in a weird position with this game, because I feel they've actually done a rather poor job so far detailing the moment-to-moment flow of the game - especially seeing as some of Peach's transformations (Detective and Pâtissière) seem to completely change the core gameplay rather than supplement Peach's moveset. I do hope they clear that up sooner rather than later!

it's a game with next to no "game essence" as it's made to target 4 year olds who like peach
We can't really confirm this for sure at the moment.

It's healthy to be skeptical, but this seems a little negative to me for a Nintendo first party developed game.

Nintendo's track record doesn't really include true baby games. I mean Pikmin 4 is easy as all get out but people still like it. idk
There's still an illusion of strategy.

....Look, you're allowed to not be interested in this type of game, but what kind of response is this lol? You sound like an edgy teenager who claims he only plays "mature games".

I wouldn't entertain a response like this if I were you unless it's to laugh and criticize at how childish, stupid, and condescending it sounds.

why are all of you assuming I'm talking about the game in a negative light by saying it's for 4 year olds. there's nothing wrong with making a game for 4 year olds
either I'm missing something or you need to reassess your investment in any and all games
edit: ok I just remembered i'm on a forum, a nintendo forum of all places. there actually have been and continue to be people that see a game as inferior and worthy of ridicule because it's made for even younger children, so it's my fault for not being more express with my post that was really just meant to reign in expectations to what I think is likelier to be the reality of the game. it's still gonna be good from what we've seen

I think there's way too little to go on in terms of expecting its gameplay or age demo or anything like that.

But like what about the game makes it look it was designed for four year olds? Because of its setting with the theater play?

It's because it features a cutesy princess character named Peach. The commentary surrounding this game is borderline sexist.

They get around the sexism by saying it looks like it's for children. What is so different between this and luigi's mansion? It's just a female character.

In the same sentence as saying it was for 4 year olds you said it had "no game essence" (???), how is that not a negative light

You gotta define "game essence" for us and why it's not a negative for it to be missing if you want to say that wasn't negative

And we have to know how much of a fan you are of other Nintendo franchises, like Kirby and what its targeted age range is to really judge the level of respect implied

game essence is sakurai's term for a game feeling fun because it gives you some sort of stress, and release from that stress thereafter

never thought I'd catch heat for this but that's definitely on me for not thinking about how esoteric the things I know are
anyway the point is the game doesn't look like it's designed around very tight or engaging gameplay but rather more about the less complex gameplay experience of playing as peach, the character, going on an adventure doing things. which is typically what you do for games aimed at kids that are too young to play games that put you in somewhat stressful situations like any mario game does, and is what has been done for games that aim at specifically younger female kids like the entirety of barbie games
I vibe with that, having a game like this with good production values and peach is just neat
some of you are describing this as luigi's mansion but with peach which I don't think is what they're doing here

Interesting video but I feel like this "game essence" is really just a proxy for risk-and-reward like it translates as, or even just plain difficulty as when he invokes it being in contrast to "broad appeal". And he seems to acknowledge himself it's not that total for what makes a game good. What comes to mind is a game like Animal Crossing, or Ace Attorney - there's pretty much zero risk-and-reward, or "game essence" there, but I don't think many would imply that life simulation or story-based games are for 4-year olds as a basis. Might as well just talk about difficulty or depth, it's much easier to understand what you mean when you say it's aiming for a younger audience.

Considering how easy a lot of modern Nintendo games are then, like dang, Pikmin 4 is trivial, it's hard to be worried on the face of it as a Nintendo fan that they can't still make this game have fun or depth in spite of that, whether it's "targeting 4 year olds" or not. Nintendo is the gameplay company, so it's much easier to be confident they're focusing on nailing the gameplay rather than be worried they're trying to nail a "Barbie-like".

It'll probably shift from being a public demo to being a press demo at smaller press-and-influencer-only events, that will later be recycled for use at store kisoks closer to launch.
Whichever it is, maybe then we'll find out the team behind this game.

The only reason it's a big mystery at the moment is because it's a whole new kind of game (new in every sense). We know by now what teams make what other games/series.

Word. First teaser felt like: hey, this exists, we’re obviously capitalizing on movie Peach

Secone teaser felt like: hey, we teased this, here’s a more limited look at it
Again, it’s also the only 2024 release so far that isn’t a remake/port.

They may have to force themselves to make a big deal out of it.

Of course. I presume their marketing campaign was gonna blast off with Nintendo Live and the demo, but I presume that changed

I played mainline Mario games as a kid, I hate this dumbification of kids that companies and their marketing are into these days. This is why Yoshi games are hella boring now, I hope Peach doesn't go down that route, but it does look like it.

I did too. But there wasn't anything else. I have my own children and it has been great that there are games for a different age groups nowadays. And different genders. I really don't like your comment at all. It shows complete misunderstanding and ignorance of children.

My three year old just discovered Peppa Pig games and it was a joy to watch. But no, hardcore gamers laugh at those titles.

It's not wrong to want this be more adult game. It would be ok for me as well. But I don't like that kind of attitude towards children and children games.

You've got a good point, sorry. I don't think Peppa Big game are laughable, just not for me.

Was trying to say that it feels redundant when Nintendo does it, they already design Mario games to be playable by everyone.

Ok. I understand. But actually Mario games aren't playable for everyone like younger children. But if we talk about Peach game, I would too like it to be something for gamers that has grown with Mario, but it would be great if it could also be for a new fans like my daughters. And I have to say, I don't think Yoshi games are really for children only. At least Woolly World can be really hard.

Remember when Super Mario 3D World was first announced? A lot of people were like "Wait, the next 3D Mario is just a 3DS game with slightly better graphics?? Ugh". And then it turned out to have some of the best/creative level designs in Mario.

I'm not saying this will be GOAT-tier (though would be nice), it's just that Nintendo has a history of making really meh/underwhelming announcement trailers, then as release date approaches, show off what the game is really like and gets people hyped.

I'm going to assume that Feb's direct is gonna show us a "real" trailer of the game.

They've absolutely saved the wildest transformations and scenarios for the final trailer, where they will probably show too much of the game off, like they usually do nowadays. That seems to have been a winning formula for them on Switch for creating last minute hype for games, so it's what I'm expecting to happen here too.

Kind of weird there hasn't been another trailer for this by now. You'd think there would have been with the original schedule for Nintendo Live.
If they really were really trying to spotlight this at an event and then those plans got disrupted, maybe they'll give it a special mini-Direct of it's own?

Or maybe it's own Nintendo treehouse Live segment?

could be major elements of the game they've kept close to the chest this whole time, like they did for other Switch games in past years

It seems like they mostly have the marketing bandwidth to only push one unreleased game at a time. The plan might have originally been to show Peach more at Nintendo Live, but with that scrapped and Another Code out the door they seem in full-on Mario vs Donkey Kong mode at the moment. I'm guessing whatever they had for Peach is being held until either the next direct or closer to when MvDK launches (whichever comes first)

They never would have announced anything at Nintendo Live itself, but you'd think they'd have a trailer detailing the game a bit more beforehand since they were supposed to have a demo there. Perhaps that trailer has been delayed with the event cancelled.

The whole thing surrounding this game is beyond weird, like what the fuck:
  • Barely shown off, just twice
  • Name wasn't even decided on yet in the first reveal
  • No word on the dev team (only reason it's still a mystery is because it's a whole new kind of game)
  • Barely any advertising
  • The "controversial" movie-ish Peach change to the box art
  • No further word since then
  • Demo was supposed to be at an event that got cancelled (thanks a lot, assholes who made those threats)
Like, can this scream Switch twilight year leftover any harder?

Uhh, this is normal? We're still two months out from release, marketing hasn't started yet. We didn't know who was developing Mario RPG or Another Code until they were about to come out. And names aren't revealed during the reveal half the time, just look at Smash Ultimate, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and Tears of the Kingdom. The only thing that's a little weird is the box art change, and that can be explained by the movie design.

There aren't any red flags yet.

Don’t know if this has been discussed yet, but how do we feel about Grape sticking around? Mario doesn’t really have any recurring female antagonists outside like… Wendy and Pom Pom.

I feel like she’s liable to be another one-off, but if Peach becomes its own series, she could always end up something like King Boo in Luigi’s Mansion; a main antagonist in a subseries that shows up infrequently in the main series and spin-offs.

Just a thought. I think it would be fun.

the answer to that question would be the developer's intentions and if the game succeeds. that said, I'm not sure if Nintendo or NLG expected King Boo to continue as he did

Is it just me, or does the gameplay we’ve seen seem kinda barebones? Like there hasn’t been a real hook yet, which is bad for a new franchise (yes it’s a Mario game, but it’s still a new spin-off series with original gameplay/ideas). I hope I’m wrong though, I would love for this to start something great

Yeah, like I said previously, what little was shown so far hasn’t really gotten the message across yet.

Oof, if only those jerks didn’t force them to cancel Nintendo Live.

If it's a good villain, why not. But I also wonder where that fits because it feels like Bowser is Peach's antagonist first, and he's Mario's antagonist because of Peach.

I’m sure we’ll get some sort of trailer in its place. And if not, we will surely get an extended look at the February direct

Unless Showtime surprises and goes on to sell like 10 million, I'm fully expecting Grape to be a one-off and join the likes of Wart and Tatanga on "And we never saw them again" Island

Agree that it would definitely be neat to get a recurring lady villain though if Showtime goes on to spawn a consistent sub-series; don't think the Marioverse has had one since... Wario Land's Captain Syrup?

What you didn’t like about Luigi's Mansion 3?
The camera angle and controls, mostly. I hate not being able to control a camera in a 3D game, it throws off my depth perception. I also felt that Luigi wasn't fun to control. Other than that, the game was just kinda boring. It's weird because Dark Moon was the first game I ever completed and I liked it, so I'm not sure why LM3 was so different.

Almost the opposite for me. Dark moon was alright, but also lukewarm. LM3 was really good, pretty much close in quality to the original Luigi's Mansion.
