just... big yikes
and i thought this year was gonna be one of the better ones with geoff's incessant hyping.
Yeah, it's quite surprising how long Geoff gets away with hyping his shows up and then not really delivering on them. At least, that's how I feel personally. Could be TGA's are awesome shows for certain kind of gamers just not for me.

Geoff always hypes it

And honestly I feel like it's almost as if the quality of the show is inversely related to how much he hypes it

But he does that every year. He wouldn't be a good host and show runner if he wasn't trying to get people to watch it.

It was the same last year. Sephiroth started it off. Perfect Dark I believe was announced in the first half.
The only year (2018 and onward, at least) that I can remember anything really cool and surprising happening in the back half of the show was the Joker reveal. Otherwise, at least off the top of my head, the second half of the show is usually much worse than the first half.

I know a lot of people on the internet want people to set reasonable expectations in advance but you have to remember that the goal is to get people to watch whether it's an Award Show or a Nintendo Direct or an E3 Conference. It's in their best interest to get people hyped and watching. If people came away disappointed because their expectations were too high, then from the standpoint of the show runner, you at least watched it, you know about the products they are selling, and you may talk about those products to other people. That's better than you not knowing something exists at all. You can't sell what people don't know about.

So of course Geoff is going to hype up his show each time. It's against his interests to try to lower expectations.

the thing is all the good reveals were announced before the show anyways. there really was no surprises for anyone except... alan wake and hellblade i guess. and those weren't really surprises either.

But he does that every year. He wouldn't be a good host and show runner if he wasn't trying to get people to watch it.
i felt like he did dialed it up to 11 this year

I think this show summarizes why gaming from some aspects still is perceived as a weirdo hobby.
Adopting an award show concept from the film industry but then not addressing what gaming has to offer on top of graphics and story telling (like movies) is bad.
But maybe me selling my Gaming PC and PS since I'm bored with AAA graphic showcasts is the one on the wrong train.

Slowly catching up on announcements so I have no strong feelings on the show yet but this Suicide Squad trailer looked like the biggest parody of what gamers think is cool. Mechanically it actually looks interesting, however.

Didn't bother with the game awards. Just played Tetris Effect Connected and Loop Hero. Figured playing some games would be more enjoyable than watching another lackluster show. Seems I made the right choice.

Looking forward to next week and indie world.

If I was Geoff, I’d probably be bouncing off the walls with hype from all the things he gets to show and reveal. I think he genuinely is excited for his show and yes he hyped it up way more than previous years.

I do think that unfortunately even though this was actually shorter than previous years, it felt way too long with not enough substance. This year really didn’t work out for anyone, the awards or the trailers. They didn’t even read the nominees this year for most of the awards and there were three lightning round where four or five awards were announced in a minute or two. The trailers suffered too since they were often back to back and ultimately all blended together. I watched all four hours of it and I don’t think I could tell you much more than 25% of what was actually there. He needs to split it into two shows or reject somewhere between 33-50% of the trailers. It just isn’t working as is.

Agreed. This is like an all encompassing gameshow smashed together with an awards show which makes it kinda awkward and rushed, even with the long running time. I see where he is coming from though. "Just" a gameshow means it'll be like some sort of E3 showcase, so he needs the awards-part for the show to be it's own thing so to speak.

And even though TGA's might not be my thing per se, I'm glad it's here. And I believe Geoff is genuinely excited and that is just a great thing to see imo.

I'm saddened by the fact that most of the games I wanted to see gameplay of only had very little to none of it.

The end of the game awards always signals the most stressful and uncertain time of the year to me - that it’s time to start thinking about the first direct of 2022 lmao

As someone who wasn’t hyped for a single reveal I can admit there was some super cool stuff that people outside of the ERA/Fami bubble would be excited for, so I definitely see where Geoff is coming from when he hypes these things

Glad i chose sleep over watching the TGA show.

There were a few things that are definitely cool, like Homeworld 3 (but i have no PC for it), Warhammer 40K Space-Marine 2 and the Elden Ring trailer, but really neither is worth having a miserable work day for.

Atlus big lol. It's one thing to put a Persona 5 sequel on multiple platforms without the main game when it's still fresh in people's memory, but doing so for a game released years ago (i know i know PC port) sure is a decision.

Basically nothing from Nintendo did indeed surprise me a bit. I would've thought there would be at least something for a already announced game for example. Something small.

Oh well, i'm expecting an Indie Showcase next week, so bring that on.

So what did happen? If it was several hours, there must have been something.
Nintendo specifically was the Monster Hunter Rise DLC trailer.

I was super pumped for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax coming to Switch/PS4/PC and Alan Wake 2 getting announced. Also excited the Cuphead DLC is finally coming out in June. I was excited for Forspoken getting a release date despite another meh trailer until they dropped that it’ll be $70 at launch news. People seem to be really excited over the ten minute Matrix demo, I’m still downloading it.

Hi guys, I'm new here, hope I won't bother you with my not-so-good english (I mean I understand what people say/write, but I'm struggling with using it for communication myself).

I just read the official info on Hisuian Voltorb and now i'm sad.

They're friendly guys who like humans, but they kick them out of their settlements. ;_;

I know main Nintendo thread, but while we are still processing/recovering from the game awards, The Matrix demo they ended the show on is actually pretty darn rad! You can tell it’s a demo, but the graphics are amazing! After the car chase section, they walk you through some unreal engine 5 features and then drop you in an open world you can just wander around. I don’t think there’s any gameplay here, but the world they made is impressive looking and you can find a day/night toggle. Worth checking out imo!

This is gonna be the first thing I check out after work.

Replaying Paper Mario on NSO reminds me I will always be bitter about what happened to the Mario RPG subseries.

Okay back to the GOAT

So honestly, there were some fine announcements for the game awards. There really was.

Hellblade 2 gameplay reveal
Alan Wake 2 reveal
Star Wars Eclipse revealed
Wonder Woman revealed
Sonic Frontiers 'reveal'
The Expanse reveal
Arc Raiders reveal
Suicide Squad gameplay reveal
Elden Ring story trailer
Matrix experience shadowdrop
and more..

That's objectively a good lineup, I truly believe that - even if it's not for me.

I just think I no longer have much interest in much of the western high fidelity AAA games that Geoff likes to showcase in his show. They do nothing for me.
AAA games with flash and flair, From Soft and Kojima is Geoffs comfort zone.

It's his show and all and he can do whatever he wants, but for someone who claims this show is about celebration of video games.. it's just not very diverse in terms of games. And I cant imagine there arent devs and publishers that develop games for Switch that doesnt want to be on the show.

Not gonna hate on Geoff - I'm impressed with what he's done for himself, but as a Nintendo fan first and foremost.. it's kind of a dissapointment.

I feel sad SMT V has not been awarded as the best RPG of the year. I have not played Tales of Arise, I have heard it's really good too.

That Matrix demo,... Is it the demo of a game? Or just an Unreal Engine 5 demo? The car chase part was visually very impressive, but the gameplay looks too scripted.

It’s presented as just a tech demo for Unreal Engine 5 and a loose ad for the new movie. It’s only like ten minutes, twenty or thirty if you want to wander around for a bit afterwards. Worth checking out imo.

The TGA's main problem has always been that it uses an awards show format to drum up hype for Winter E3.

Geoff needs to desperately decide what type of show he wants. If he wants to do an Oscars For Games (TM) then the constant hyping and focus on reveals needs to go. No other awards show does this, and most manage to generate plenty of excitement without needing it. Parasite winning Best Film at the Oscars was enough to generate headlines around the world, they didn't need to reveal a new MCU or Harry Potter alongside it.

If he wants to just do Winter E3, then he needs to actually structure it as such, and stop having Awards only to give them next to no coverage. My abiding memory of the TGA's is Nintendo winning Publisher of the Year one year (I believe this was 2017), and Geoff just quickly handing the award to Reggie backstage before rushing off to the next reveal.

Grumbles about the TGAs aside, the Star Wars Eclipse announcement was interesting for a couple of reasons:

1) Despite hyping up the High Republic as its own thing, it looks as though they're tying this really hard into the Prequels. Pretty much every other shot was referencing something from the Prequels. It would be nice if Star Wars could have settings that go out and do their own thing, rather than constantly rehashing the films, but whatever.

2) Star Wars famous borrowing from Dune continues.

3) Quantic Dream are a terrible, awful studio, and it's amazing how hollow Geoff's words about Activision are that he would give a prominent slot to them after the exposure of their awful working conditions and management. There is nothing of worth to be gleaned from a Star Wars game made by a man who thinks women are whores, and that he doesn't make games for "f*gs".

Glad I decided to dip out after an hour. What a waste of time. Also I've learnt my lesson, if Nintendo dosen't tweet about tuning into TGA, then they won't announce anything.

It was also insulting how the TGA started, showed off 1 game, 1 award then goes to say time for a break and start showing ads.

That's harsh man.... Like, say what you want, but Geoff is putting in the work in the show. It's not for everybody, but I don't think he deserves these kinds of responses :(
People have always told me I'm too hard on Geoff, but this all really comes off as a massive ego trip/marketing bonanza to me. Its so disingenuous to call this a celebration of gaming, then spend the whole night minimizing the people who make the games in favor of announcing some CG trailers.

How is the input lag? Is it noticeable and does it affect the timing of combat?

I agree with what you're saying - if Switch is your primary platform, the framing and emphasis of TGA simply doesn't match up with most of what Switch does.

I don't hold that against Geoff at all, even if I wish we could have something with the reach of TGA that didn't end up being such a mixed bag (3 to 4 hours long, awards shunted in with advertising) while also largely limiting itself to that PS/Xbox audience. Maybe some of that is on Nintendo not bringing all that much to TGA, but some of it's down to Switch and its software ecosystem simply being somewhat different to a chunk of the industry.

Chrono Cross is a psy op. Wake up, people.

Also lol at David Cage not making games for us. We won! Merciful Quantic. 😌

Just woke up after staying up late to watch the first hour of TGA. Looks like I missed nothing giving into sleep. It was like turning up to watch a Hollywood movie at the cinema too early and being subjected to CGI trailer after CGI trailer interspersed with ads.

To call this a celebration of gaming and to introduce a clip about diversity (drag streamers) that is immediately followed by adverts with no further discussion and ends with a round of applause for another trailer... So disingenuous.

Basically E3 a decade ago without the "booth babes". Poorly disguised as an awards show.
