Hey I have a very weird off-topic question but it's music-mixing related and the only musicians I know are here.
So I listen to almost everything through headphones and I've been noticing this weird phenomenon for a while where it seems like the right channel is always more bass-heavy than the right. I've tried it with multiple sets of headphones, multiple sources (tv, Switch, computer), and it's always like that. And on my TV I was even able to switch the L & R cables and the bass-heavy side switched with them. So I don't think it's my right ear going bad or my headphones going bad. But it's so pronounced and seems to be this way in everything (games, shows, music, even noticed it to a degree in the (kickass) stuff @Suswave shared last night) so it makes me wonder:
with sound mixing is it normal to put the bass-heavy stuff on the right and the tinny stuff (like hi-hats and such) on the left? This is happening with such consistency that it's making me question my aural sanity.
That would be pretty abnormal. If it’s happening in everything, I don’t think it’s in the mix.

The TV I can’t explain — that’s the one throwing me the most. Otherwise my guess would be a mild and asymmetrical head cold, a really zesty auditory processing disorder (I have one, they’re fun!! but actually not at all in my case!!), or some kind of playback shenanigan.

I think the last one’s the most probable. It sounds a little like an issue I had with mid-side processing gone wonky once, but… that was one guitar in a mix. Not the sort of thing that affects wholesale playback.

What do you mostly listen to stuff on? What service? Apple recently added Dolby Atmos and spacial audio — I only had access to the former, but turned it off because I prefer consistency in my playback. Maybe something like that switched on and has been meddling with your anticipated soundstage?

I will say though that most good and real drum mixes have the hi-hat slightly panned to reflect the drum kit, and the overhead drum mics are usually in stereo. So your perception of hi-hat placement IS a normal thing in most recordings.

Yeah a processing issue in my ears (or brain) was my worry, but if I flip the headphones around on my head, the heavy bass I'm hearing on the right moves to the left. So that was kinda a relief but doesn't help solve what's going on.
I mostly listen to music on YouTube (I've only recently discovered Spotify, don't judge), but I also notice this happening on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, and also my Switch. The overworld music in DQXI is doing it pretty bad, for instance. I have everything (tv, consoles, lappy) set to regular-ass stereo, so I don't think that Dolby enhancement stuff is getting in the way.
It's just weird and one of those things that once I noticed I couldn't un-notice. The thing you said about the drum kit arrangement is a comfort, though. Hearing high hats on the left was making me worry I had lost high-frequency hearing in my right, making the right sound lower. But again, if that were the case then flipping the headphones or AV cables wouldn'tve seen the lows/highs switching (as they should).
Well, it's Black Friday in two hours, maybe I need the home theater equivalent of a full wardrobe replacement. 😛

Okay now I'm worried I killed the thread momentum with my weird audio talk, so uh... What's everyone's favorite licensed-IP video game from the 90s, go!

Mine is Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose for the SNES. Those Konami cartoon games just clicked, I swear.

I'm about to pause SMT5. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing game but with stressful real life going on its not really comforting to play.
I feel you there. Neither do I feel like playing Dread or SMTV right now, for real life's been a lot of ups and many downs as of late. I'd need something more cozy to play, honestly. I really don't need games right now that additionally put me into stressful situations.

Thus, instead of gaming, I've been almost exclusively watching Anime for a few weeks at this point, lol.

The Simpsons arcade game for arcade
TMNT Turtles in Time for 2D
Goldeneye 007 for 3D

So many great memories with all of these games at the time of release.

Same here, honestly. Past week and a half I've used my free time to almost exclusively start (and fully catch up on) Haikyuu. Though I'm sure I'll get back to gaming sooner or later, maybe with something a little more upbeat than I've been playing.

Since you enjoyed Promise Neverland, have you watched Erased? If not, I highly recommend it, it's short (about 13 episodes) and it's on Netflix I believe.

Oh god lmao. That scene was so painful. Poor Nia.

What is it with Xenoblade games and having a character always getting friend zoned lol?
In Xenosaga there's this guy called Allen and 90% of his character is simping for the oblivious female protagonist and always getting brutally rejected... for 3 whole games
Someone at Monolith just really likes this trope I guess

No doubt it will repeat in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. I wonder if the person responsible for this has a trauma of being rejected or something lol?

I have not, but since I started and finished Death Parade again just yesterday (yes, 12 episodes in a row), I'll have a look at Erased!

You will definitely be hooked on the first episode lol.

But man Death Parade, I don't think I can watch it again. The ending legit made me cry so much.

Very uninteresting on the performance side, which is great of course. It's 30 across the board, looks great in both docked and handheld mode (think resolution is able to be this high due to changes it lighting?), native or at least very close to native res.
This sounds great. I'll end up buying it on the Switch so if I don't get to it soon I'll at least be able to play while I'm back at my parents' this holiday.

Thanks a lot!

These are all my purchases of games released in 2021 - Also bought Eastward digitally and plan to buy Death's Door As well once I'm done with SMTV. The only thing I can think of that I havnt bought yet is Monster Hunter Stories 2 but I'll wait for a bigger sale than what's availible here yet.

Overall pretty good year - Outside of Metroid Dread it lacks that megaton for me personally, but a lot of enjoyable games especially from third parties - but Nintendos year has for me personally been very lackluster.

Shin Megami Tensei V is definitely not a good de-stressing game!
Both Dread and SMT V really have had unfortunate release windows for me personally (and even the Swoled, fwiw). I already knew that work would be much more demanding again with the first non-digital-only/hybrid semester and a project being due to wrap up and such. But maaan, there has been even more stressful stuff besides that and the aforementioned things have been even more stressful than anticipated, lol.
Gaming in general just takes way too much energy or focus for me right now, so don't get me started on rather challenging stuff like Metroid or SMT. 😂 Just thinking about potentially having a tough time with some parts of these games makes me want to do anything but play them.

Good morning, folks! I hope my fellow American fami had a lovely Thanksgiving yesterday! And for the rest of you, I hope you had a lovely Thursday!

Maybe you should get BDSP and embrace the Chibi? =P

I don't know; I might as well grab some salt and rub it into my eyes instead.

(While I honestly don't mind the visuals too much, I just can't bring myself to buy any traditional mainline Pokemon game anymore)

Snap is the better destressing Pokémon game anyway because it doesn't have Cynthia :p

Wouldn't force myself to play anything anyway. It's my first week back at work and I'm swamped so I also had to put SMTV aside as well.
