Just a nice movie to watch with your daughter or dad

I think this is one of those movies where it's fine if you watch them once in your life and then never again.

Was also reading the Nintendo Life preview on the MGS collection and I don't think a lot has gone into this on any platform outside of a basic port job. I think I'll just stick with the 360 BC versions of 2+3 at this stage and MGS 1 on Vita. If these are 720p on PS5 and Xbox then woof...
Speaking of missed opportunities, we were also surprised to discover that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are based on the HD Collection editions that were released for PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012. We say ‘based on’, but in truth Konami has made no effort to hide this fact (and to be fair it did announce them as such with an admittedly slim banner on the collection’s promotional material). The menus for both games just flat out have ‘HD Edition’ plastered on them, with ‘© 2012 Konami’ still there as well.

These the versions run at 720p, and the Switch version is also seemingly capped at 30fps, despite the original HD releases running at 60fps. Considering the Switch is more powerful than the two consoles that previously held this pair of games, it’s disappointing to say the least that the frames have been halved.

We asked about performance on PS5, Xbox Series X, plus the newly announced PS4 release; Konami clarified that the games will be targeting the same resolution (720p) and frame rate of the initial HD releases. Given that Switch isn’t running them at 60fps, we suppose we’ll have to wait and see how things fare on the other platforms.

Been working through my backlog and finally got around to FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch.

It's actually a damn fine little Metroidvania with a cool deiselpunk aesthetic, a surprisingly deep combat system, and excellent pacing that keeps the dopamine hits coming. Considering it's a crossgen PS5/PS4 game to begin with, it's quite a competent port to Switch as well.

It went largely overlooked with how packed Switch's 2022 was, but I'm glad I took the time to check it out, I'm enjoying it a lot. Would recommend it to those fond of the genre! :)

Apologies for not posting the weekly question prompt. My Friday + weekend was busier than I anticipated, will have it up later today.

It's Gunvolt 9th anniversary and they just announced Gunvolt channel is returning on sept 14th. hopefully with a new project (prob not main series, it's too soon for GV4). IT would still probably be around mid 2024 since they still have to put out Yohane on November, and Umbraclaw probably around february or march

I really need to get around to actually playing this series...

I think I get what you're saying but locking actual humans out of editing it is not really what I'd call a decent implementation. Isn't the whole point of a Wiki that it's fan-maintained? Saying "we're gonna AI this stuff together and then not let humans touch it" seems like some pretty bad planning or bad intentions or both. Especially during a time when "let's just fire most of the creative team and replace them with ChatGPT and Midjourney" is starting to be legitimate corporate strategy in some industries.
Yea, until the whole "hallucination" thing is solved these things are interns at best and need to be managed in the same way. Otherwise, you've just got infinite monkeys and typewriters.

People internet bitched about it for fifteen years and then it came out
Hasn't worked for the Mother fandom yet 😭

Charles Martinet seems to be stepping back (or being stepped back) from voicing Mario, becoming a "brand ambassador" instead.

Dunno what that means or implies.

The only acceptable use of generative AI is for shitposts though
Yeah and I was okay with it in the beginning when that was what it was being used for but now my acceptance of it is dwindling because of allllllll this other mess

and Corridor Digital's AI-generated "anime" series really isn't helping

Yeah that's very fair. I'm pretty sure I still have a stable diffusion picture of a penguin eating a subway sandwich on my phone somewhere, that was a fun few weeks when I was playing with that.

Now seeing what it's doing to artists it is much, much less fun.

I was warned but I still really didn't expect Guardians 3 to be such a kick in the pants (for most of the runtime).

One of the only times I've accepted an ending dance party.

roguelike starfox

roguelike FELINE starfox

oh my - want want want

EDIT: ooh and a full scale non rogue one is coming

"On-rail" shooter where you go all guns blazing, like the one in Kingdom Hearts - awesome!

But true onrail shooter where you have to AIM while you auto flying, like this game here, or majority of Starfox 64 and Starwing, is truly the devil. Requires much better attention span and I don't have any.

Having watched a handful of Super Eyepatch Wolf videos about fandoms and the memes they spawned that’s pretty darn accurate. Not to reduce the value of the effort people put into their fanworks and memes but Generative AI is just speed running a natural process in this context.

Can't find it anymore but I saw a tweet about denying being part of the Star Wars fandom the same way Oppenheimer denied being a communist and it spoke to my soul.

I never actually joined the fandom and I definitely don't have a membership card.

I used to think I was part of the Star Wars fandom but then members of the Star Wars fandom spent years making it very clear that I was not a true Star Wars fan because I didn't read the books which according to them is the "true" Star Wars as also according to them Lucas is a hack who doesn't understand his own stories and worlds and then when the sequel trilogy came out and I actually enjoyed it, especially epVIII, it basically solidified my place as being a fake fan to the point where I would get mocked for it at get-togethers so I don't think I'm getting a membership card either

Not sure if that's close to how Jrob felt about communism though

is it just me or Starfield's marketing has been almost non-existent? The last thing we have is the starfield direct but there was no preview, no final trailer, no big interviews.

Obviously you committed the cardinal sin of every fandom: Actually liking something, that's a rookie mistake 🤣

Camo must be far more popular than my dislike for it might imply for them to include two of them in the first batch. The Starfield one looks great but it doesn't look like it'd work well horizontally, so not for me.

This is a great idea, though. If they put out a purple one I'm all in. I hope Nintendo follows suit (with this and the PS5's faceplates) and has a way to customise the Switch's successor that doesn't involve buying a new console and/or Joy-Cons.

We've still got over a week left until the 'Early Access' period starts, so they're likely going to be ramping things up hard then. Reviewers already have access to the game so we can at the very least expect a massive review blowout just before launch. Wouldn't be surprised if we get a live action trailer and a launch trailer as well. Anecdotally though I've had a fair few Starfield ads on Youtube, so there's some stuff happening.

EDIT: They also did a big Discord Q&A going into a bunch more details:

also adam savage tested so could be used for a live action trailer

At least part of the fandom has changed their stance on Lucas so it's cool to like him again lol

Lucas was good at making ideas, worlds, and characters that people could resonate with. And his and Lucasarts contribution to the tech side of movie making is underrated. But it's his directing that was always the issue. He needed to bring in someone to smooth out the edges, amend some of the writing, and bring out the true talent of the cast he was able to get.

For me I'm no longer a dedicated Star Wars fan cause I legit just can't care about a franchise where "and then they all died and/or nothing they did really mattered," is the end-point for, like, 90% of the media that releases. They keep building up all these sand-castles with the pre-VII content, knowing that the sequel trilogy is just gonna come in and kick them all over. For someone like me who finds it really hard to enjoy stories that I feel are invalidated in some way (by a crappy ending, a sequel-trilogy style 'reset', or badly-done meta nonsense), that's kinda rough.

Most I really do nowadays SW-wise is buy the occasional Lego set. Just don't have any motivation to watch stuff like The Mandalorian S3, Ashoka, etc. Might play Jedi Survivor eventually, but it's not that high on my priority list.
