I’ve always wanted a real horror IP from Nintendo. Even if it’s not ED, I’ll take a new horror IP.
It would be interesting to see what manner of horror might be created under Nintendo, sure. I was going to say they could revive Suda51's
Kurayami pitch, but it looks like he adapted it into a manga?
In any case, I do think there's plenty of potential in
Eternal Darkness, especially if Nintendo can find someone to work on it who has fresh ideas that fit what's set up. Even a carefully considered revisit to the existing game could work to start with.
I replayed ED a couple years ago for the first time since release and it definitely has some neat ideas. A sequel could be really cool for sure. I'm still kinda bummed Shadow of the Eternals didn't get funded... probably a combination of the Dyak baggage and ED just not being super popular.
I'm also pretty sure that happened after
the article that detailed the mishandling of
X-Men: Destiny, wherein it was alleged that Silicon Knights, helmed by Dyack, ceased to put their attention on projects and sacrificed its ability to work on that in an ill-fated attempt to put together a demo for
Eternal Darkness 2 (to shop around, even though it's owned by Nintendo), and wherein it was suggested that Nintendo had been a key point in their ability to quality games together.
I'm sure this didn't much impact the general public, but it probably didn't help much regarding the gaming population that might have considered putting money toward a Dyack-helmed successor.
I definitely agree that Retro and NLG would be the on the top of the list to make ED2, but I just can't see a scenario where NLG isn't making LM4.
Oh, that:
"We've already got an Eternal Darkness. Here, look at this Luigi's Mansion."
Nintendo spent like a decade and 4 exclusive titles (that's probably giving too much credit to that 3ds game though, it's really 3 major games) trying to make fatal frame work as a horror series on Nintendo.
That, incidentally is why eternal darkness definitely isn't happening, Nintendo spent a lot of time trying to get horror to be a thing on Nintendo hardware, but it never took off.
I maintain Nintendo's partnership regarding
Fatale Frame was strongly mishandled. Consider the state of
Fatal Frame releases in the West under that partnership, then go from there and consider its handling in America. It's a shame, too. I was really hopeful for that at the time.
As it is, I wouldn't entirely base my expectations regarding
Fatal Frame itself on this, much less something like
Eternal Darkness which might be expected to have its strongest market in those neglected areas.
