I've thought of a Switch 2/Pro/U gimmick I'd actually care about. I nearly posted this in the hardware spec thread, but it's too much of a tangent from figuring out as much as possible about Dane.

The question of whether The Next Console Iteration will have a control gimmick, with the general consensus being that no one wants one. I realize I'm gonna get some shit for this but you know what I would really welcome? Wii Style Pointer Controls.

The Switch has an amazing trick with the Joy-Cons + The Touchscreen. Touch allows pointer centric games to run in portable mode (sometimes awkwardly, ala Mario Galaxy) and pointer emulation with accelerometers does an admirable job with emulating a Wii pointer.

But the Wii generation is about to be in their Nostalgic Feels, and the pointer emulation limits a lot of the Wii library from coming over comfortably. On the other hand, touchscreen gaming is going strong in the mobile world and PCs still have a mouse - getting those games up onto the TV is a challenge.

I think there would be real value in bringing a Wii style pointer back - especially if it can be made sensor-bar-less. Weirdly enough, I have a tiny bit of experience with that. Back in the aughts I worked in a psych lab that used IR cameras for eye tracking. I did some experiments with CRTs, and you can absolutely see a TV as a square of light with an IR camera like the one in the Joy-Con, and with some processing power use it to orient a pointer just like a sensor-bar. I have no sense of whether that technique would work with modern TVs (it's probably a no go on OLEDs), and I think the ergonomics to put a camera on the front of the Joy-Con would be a nightmare. BUT - I didn't have a Wii so I want it, nyah nyah
I'll start by saying I'm 100% with you: Wii-style pointer controls are sorely missed on the Joy-Con. Gyro pointing is okay but it's not a perfect replacement. That said, for that to work, there'd need to be a camera on the top of the Joy-Con where the R/ZR buttons are, and I just don't think there's nearly enough room for it.

I figure there would have to be a special attachment that slots connects the railing and has its own buttons to take over R/ZR inputs.

Have a question for y'all with Black Friday around the corner and some accessories on sale.

Looking at updating my microSD card from 256GB. I just realized a 512GB card has gone down in price drastically ($82 CAD full price on Amazon for SanDisk UHS-1), but I was wondering is people have a preferred brand between SanDisk/Samsung/Kingston/Lexar, and if it might be cheaper elsewhere? I've seen Canada Computers for $70 for the Kingston, but just want to know what people prefer and has more reliability
I’m a big fan of the SanDisk 512GB!

Just be careful and check for hairline fractures — if it’s cracked, it could create a heat issue. This is apparently significantly worse on the 1TB card — there are reports of it generating enough heat to melt a Switch, or worse.

I would hypothetically love a TB of storage on my Switch, but between the tiny chance of a defective one causing a fire and the cost… I’m staying away from it.

512GB is great though, no issues at all for me.

After years of waiting and acts of God delaying it, the fabled Big Year is finally approaching. At last all of the little normies will have their Zelda 2, their Metroid Prime Unology, their Xenoblade and Splatoon 3s, a 3D Kirby after thirty years, Octopath 2, and Mario + Rabbids 2.

How’s it going everyone? Figured out that the casual game is Everybody’s Endless Ocean yet?
if someone at NoA called Endless Ocean a stinker I'd slap them. I don't care if it was Bill fucking Trinen, he would catch these hands

Yeah, no idea how to make it work ergonomically, like I said. I had some DEEPLY WACKY ideas about combining the accelerometer data with something like radio decay from a signal transmitted by the dock to help orient the controller in 3D space but I don't think that's precise enough.

I have become Boo

Boo’s are cool.

Certainly cooler than what I was before - that Metroid enemy which literally kills itself to take a small amount of health off of ONE of Samus’ two dozen energy tanks. If its lucky. It often isn’t.

I can’t promise I will take any suggestions, but if anyone has any ST3 title suggestions, please let me know!

loose concepts I’m working with:
  • The Game Awards
  • Big Brain Academy
  • vague holidaying that is both inclusive and undercut
  • it’s cold some places but not all of them
  • the number three
be warned that I have considered [REDACTED]

actually, wait, maybe I like that one

YOU SAW NOTHING

@Red Monster @Emily @Suswave

Thanks for the insight, friends! I'll stick with the SanDisk option then and keep my fingers crossed it gets marked on sale shortly!

I just hope there'll be a way to easily transfer all the data from my existing card to the new one through my PC without having to redownload everything from Nintendo's atrocious eshop servers 😅

Amiibo Festival would be the best case scenario, because there's nothing inherently wrong with an Animal Crossing board game or party game. Especially when there's already a mainline game on the console and that it probably won't be tied to Amiibos, so that's already two major complaints out of the way.

I feel like, if they were gonna do Amiibo Festival at this point, they would have built it into New Horizons DLC like they did with Happy Home Designer. Maybe they could have made something called "Party Island" or something that acts as a big game board.

I would love if the menu at the airport was like

  • I wanna fly!
  • I want visitors.
  • I want to go to work.
  • I want to party!

No shame in admitting I cried very hard multiple times for my favorire shiny colored CPU.

"Poppi made promise"

While we're no shame admitting, I don't agree with Xenoblade 2's ending artistically, but watching reactions to it has given me such joy I no longer mind.

Based on all the hints and clues about this casual stinker, I unfortunately have to conclude that this is the title we're looking at...

At least in PAL regions; maybe the US title will be Festival Folk.

Just one minor (exceedingly amateurish) change:

Considering the reaction and context of the first game , I just couldn’t see it being an amiibo festival sequel as a thing that would mostly just get a shrug from people and no reaction , lol .

BOTW2 is March 3 2023 to coincide with the launch of the Switch Generation 2 OBVIOUSLY

There seems to be a recurring trend with open world Nintendo games recently. People desperately want them to be delayed for whatever reason.

Arceus should be delayed to "improve performance".
BotW2 should be delayed to coincide with the Switch Plus launch.
Xenoblade 3 should be delayed indefinitely.

My super loony Nintendo prediction is that since Mario has to be the big holiday title, they're aiming for a Summer 2022 release for BotW2.
Hell yeah, the sooner the better. Though I see Splatoon as being the big summer game, so BotW2 for March to align with the release of the first game. 😁

Everybody? Everybody....I've got it!

Wait, no, that implies the Homestar Runner series stinks, and it absolutely does not. Nevermind, I'll think of something else.
