Alright, so the consensus is that a new 2D Mario game is releasing later this year. One thing i'm curious about is if this game will take inspiration from the Mario movie? Such as the characters designs from the movie and a similar narrative to the movie.

Edit: First post of page 100? Neat!

Pikmin fans are getting a brand new game in July while us Zelda fans haven't gotten anything in almost a month. This is unfair and unacceptable. And for Xenoblade and Fire Emblem fans, the period since we last got something new has been even longer. Nintendo needs to start paying attention to its neglected fan bases.

This, but unironically

We Metroid fans haven't eaten in four months. We're dying.

If it is a General Direct, it will be announced next week. Otherwise, a Partner is likelier for June imho.

"We actually have 1 last thing to show you."

Screen goes black

We see two figures in a dark underground area, one is holding a torch. We see a rat scurrying between glowing stones protruding through a running river. Strange ruins are seen in the background.

Then we see a scene where a mysterious green hand is holding a corpse in a paralyzed state.

We see our two heroes more closely.

IT'S FOX AND KRYSTAL LOOKING AT THE MUMMIFIED CORPSE OF ANDROSS!

STAR FOX ADVENTURES 2!!!!! RELEASING TODAY!!!!

I laughed then made myself sad from how unlikely this is to happen 🥲

So, a switch physical version of Persona 3 Reload was found online. I'm now certain there is a direct within the next 2 weeks. It's either a Partner Showcase or a General Direct.

true but it's highly unlikely we get a Partner Showcase with no first party games announced for fall

unless, of course, it's true that they don't have any
I think they have something, but probably(?) nothing big. (Or, well, nothing bigger than Pikmin 4 size. Unless we get awfully lucky with Metroid Prime 4.)

I don't see Nintendo letting Switch's last holiday season slip by without something that they think can shift 10 million copies or more. 2D Mario would be my front runner, but Mario Party could do that. Maybe an Animal Crossing spin off, or a new Tomodachi, would have a shot at 5 to 10 million.

They aim to ship 15 million consoles and 180 million games this fiscal year. That needs more than a 3 million+ selling title after Pikmin 4.

Riffing on what other people have said previously:

Week of June 18th: General Direct
Week of June 25th: Pokemon Direct
Week of July 2nd: Pikmin 4 Direct
Week of July 9th: Pikmin 4 Previews
Week of July 16th: Pikmin 4 Reviews and Launch

Looks good to me

“We made it digital only to keep prices low for you, the gamers!” is going to be the convenient excuse to get out from ever having to make a physical product again. Genius really (then the prices will magically creep back up).
I don't understand why these companies wouldn't partner with a company like LRG, or do a pre order based limited run of physical games through their website. Even if it's at a premium, those of us who want physical are generally more inclined to spend extra anyway.

I remember when digital games on consoles were first becoming a thing, many people had the belief that publishers would sell games for cheaper because they didn't give a percentage to retails. I'm like "No. They're gonna sell the games for the same price to pocket the cash that would have gone to the retailers".

And deep digital sales just ate the profits of the used game market

Sounds about right, I'd be very pleased with that! It's crazy we might have a Direct in less than two weeks, since I'm just so obsessed with Zelda right now, and that has been the game I looked forward to the most in any Direct since 2019.

Pikmin 4 Direct at the same time as the Starfield Showcase because Miyamoto wants to make it clear what the biggest space adventure of the year is.

I knew that this trend was coming, but I am not ready for it lol.

....why are we acting like digital only games haven't been a thing for several years now? I don't get why everyone is annoyed at this.

$60/70 AAA games being digital only is still a relatively new thing. Regardless, people have a right to be upset that a buying option is being taken away from them,

Any time a previous physical series goes digital only is going to be immensely frustrating for physical game fans. Even more so when the game is going to suck up tons of storage space. You also lose out on a lot of value by no longer being able to share your games with friends easily or return/sell them. There is no gain for physical game fans. As Barely Able rightly points out, sure Like A Dragon Gaiden and Alan Wake II may be cheaper than the $60 or $70 they could potentially be otherwise, but prices are going to creep up and stuff like this accelerates the death of physical media.

  • New 2D Mario
  • New 2D DK
  • Yoshi's Woolly World port
  • New Wario Land

All alongside Sonic Superstars and new Prince of Persia. It's 2.5D time, baby.

Seeing the gameplay trailer of MK1 I can only wonder how the hell they'll put it on Switch. A whole other build using some MK11 assets? Pre-rendered backgrounds?

Sonic tho looks really really impressive but it's actually quite feasible, we've seen some indies and 2D games just as impressive on the Switch, it's just that it's minimalistic and 2D style makes it mind blowing. I mean the NSMB aesthetic got everyone tired of it but the "models"(I remember seeing they went for a mid ground between sprites and modeling) were very rounded and everything was very clear.

I expect the 2D Mario game to rely heavily on 2.5D or something and be in the same ground as Dread, with Luigi's Mansion 3 being the dream but ain't happening imo.

Every day we’re closer to seeing a new art style for the Mario series and that makes me very excited.

Mario & Sonic in an upcoming June Direct? A Persona party game? Rumblings in June and July potentially? Smells like a partner showcase in June to me.

Alright, so the consensus is that a new 2D Mario game is releasing later this year.
As far as I can tell, the main pieces of evidence in support of a 2D Mario releasing soon are "some devs who have worked on 2D Mario in the past haven't worked on any completed projects for a while", "we know Nintendo are working on 2D platformers" and "it's been ages and feels like it's time". A lot of Fami folks have convinced themselves it's an inevitability but it feels a little shakey to me
