I wonder if the first good shot at sweeping the Game Awards since 2017 will make Nintendo more inclined to be more of a presence at the show this year.
They brought three things last year including a new game reveal (Bayonetta Origins, Mario Movie Clip, Fire Emblem DLC info). Even repeating that level of presence would be pretty solid. If Metroid Prime isn't the holiday game or the Zelda DLC isn't all out yet, maybe we'll get trailers there. If new hardware has already been revealed by then, then the chances of game reveals shoots up.

Probably not. They are in very different positon that they were in 2017, Switch is on whole another level now.

As far as I can tell, the main pieces of evidence in support of a 2D Mario releasing soon are "some devs who have worked on 2D Mario in the past haven't worked on any completed projects for a while", "we know Nintendo are working on 2D platformers" and "it's been ages and feels like it's time". A lot of Fami folks have convinced themselves it's an inevitability but it feels a little shakey to me

Imo 2d Mario is most logical explanation of the very optimistic software forecast for the FY. This is the only game that could pull high sales numbers, and I expect 3d Mario to be made for the next machine.
2d Mario sell to the mainstream audience and should benefit from the movie success.
Donkey kong is a possibility, but it is far from having the same sales potential.

Why is the consensus next week and not this one?
Summer Games Fest and other gaming presentations are in strong force this coming week still. We also haven’t heard too much insider noise yet which makes next week feel less likely than the following.

(Necrolipe is June, Jeff Grubb is July, NateDrake is no comment)

Still possible though!

Not having them credited in 5 years is really a lot of time, even covid delayed things more. If the full development started in 2019, it's not unreasonable to expect this game this year, especially if they want to sell 15M Switches this FY. There was no way this game would be ready like last year, it actually has little to do with Movie release, it's just EPD developmemt schedule. 2D Mario is the only Nintendo's biggest holiday seller in the last holiday of the Switch.

Cheesmeister on Twitter always makes a good chart of the upcoming conferences if you want a quick sense of how crowded the presentation schedule is:

As of this post, there are still 15 to go!

I wouldn't say it's inevitable, but that it's the likeliest candidate for me.

I would also say it's important to remember Nintendo don't have a Pokemon RPG this year and so they'll need another big brand to step up for the holiday season, and every October on Switch has a Super Mario franchise title of some kind. That bit of context is pretty vital to me, because you have to ask: what title will Nintendo use to replace Pokemon? And will they break a long span of Super Mario every October? On the latter front, this is the first June/July without a Mario title since 2017; but I can't see the holiday season going by without Mario.

Sure, DK or Tomodachi would perform strongly on Switch, and both are feasible from a development perspective. But neither has the selling power of a mainline Mario release. I do think an alternative possibility here is Mario Party in October. Perhaps DK or Tomodachi get September, and Prime 4 comes in November. But we have even less pointing to DK or Tomodachi than we do Super Mario, because we know 2D Mario in Kyoto is inevitable at some point, while there's still some debate as to what EPD 8 are doing.

Haven't been here for a while, but I see some people talking about Mario and Sonic Olympics game and I have to ask - I remember reading somewhere that apparently the next one would be just Sonic at the Olympics without Mario, is there any truth to that or was that just rumours/speculation (or am I completely misremembering and making things up)?

There have already been 'Sonic at the Olympic games' titles on mobile.

It's extremely unlikely the mario and sonic series ends any time soon.

Everyone: ah, here comes 2D Mario
EPD: 2D moooonkeeeee strikes back

I know about the mobile game, but I thought I read something about the main 2022 Olympics console game.
Once again, maybe I'm just misremembering...

I have never played a Mario & Sonic at the Olympics game, but I really should get into it actually.
the first Winter Olympic Games and London 2012 on the Wii are the highlights for me! Of course, it's all on the Dream Events... which sadly they reduced more and more on each title (which I assume it has to do with the Olympics committee asking for deemphasize them);

But the 8-Bit Story Mode in Tokyo 2020 by AlphaDream is really cute!

Forget 2D Mario and 2D DK. Where's 2D Zelda? It's been 4 years since the LA's remake and nearly a decade since A Link Between Worlds. When's the next one coming out Nintendo?

And where's 2D Xenoblade? The last time we got one was never! Pikmin gets a 2D game but not Xenoblade! And we haven't gotten a brand new 2D Fire Emblem on Switch yet. Come on Nintendo. Start paying attention to these neglected series!

If 2D Mario is this holiday, I will have to move my expectations for Switch 2 to from Spring 24 to Holiday 24 because I can't imagine so little time between 2D Mario and 3D Mario, which I think has to be a launch title.

If right now Nintendo doesn't have at least a single person working on a new 2-D Zelda (and by new I am excluding remakes), then I will be an extremely disappointed individual. It's been too damn long!

The same goes for a new 2-D Metroid. I mean, I know in this case it hasn't been long since the last one, but I want them to keep those coming.

Not a wise move foe Nintendo to open their cinematic universe with all their big names. It'll work out well for them now, but down the road they'll be in the same position as Marvel, trying to hype people up to see shit like Kuru Kuru Kururin and Sheriff

Nintendo doesn't have the Disney money to be pumping 3 movies and 2 shows a year, it'll be one movie every 2 years at the most, and even that is gonna take a while before we get to that point.

I watched the bonus features for the Mario movie and it's hilarious how like every damn segment of "meet the voice cast" ends with the actor leaving it at "and I'd be thrilled to voice this character again!"

Like it feels like an open secret that Mario 2, spinoffs, and other Nintendo franchises are happening. They just can't yet make the announcements either due to negotiations with Nintendo or cause of the writer's strike.

Nintendo focuses too much on 3D and 2D games and not enough on 1D games

probably a bit of a hot take but personally i've always viewed Donkey Kong games as less good Mario games anyways
As much as I love them, I’ll admit it’s hard to compare even the best DKC games to the “golden age” Mario games like SMB3 and World, but tell me with a straight face you’d rather play one of four NSMB games over something like DKC2 or Tropical Freeze

My uncle who works at Tesco told me they already have the display boards for the Heinz tie-in products for when Tomato Adventure: The Movie comes out this autumn.
