In retrospect, it's kind of telling how much the Wii fell off in popularity by 2012 that there weren't tons of scalpers trying to capitalize on something with the Wii brand on it with the release of the Wii U.

I always thought the Wii was an unmitigated success but it such had a severe drop after the first half. I think even if the Wii U were called Wii 2 and had much clearer marketing, the Wii brand was mostly dying at that point and there probably wouldn't have been such a fever to buy one as there was in the Wii's first year.
Yeah the 2010-2012 time for Wii was not managed the greatest by Nintendo. But it makes sense they had to juggle development for Wii, Wii U and 3DS.

Let me tell you a story.

It was March 2nd, 2017. I was so, super excited for the launch of the Switch. But, I had not yet gotten in a pre-order for Breath of the Wild or even the Nintendo Switch. The only things I had a pre-order for, were the 5 Breath of the Wild amiibo that launched the same day.

I called one of the stores around me and - by divine luck - they had both a Nintendo Switch AND Breath of the Wild left without pre-order, available for pick-up on the next day. They said they couldn't really place it as an order under my name, but I just had to be there as quick as I could.

Fast forward to the next day. I woke up early so I could hopefully go and get the console and Zelda. But first, I had another pick-up to make. I went to another shop where I had placed my pre-order for the 5 amiibo. They told me barely any came in, and I was disappointed. They went in the back to check which ones did arrive.. and by a miracle there was a complete set of 5 amiibo waiting there for me. Mine were the only pre-order that day that came in completely. I was OVER THE MOON.

Then the real nervousness kicked in. Would I make it in time to the shop, to pick up the Switch and Zelda which, as of yesterday did not have a pre-order on them? Was the journey there going to be worth it? Would it all be for naught? I stepped out of the car, and as excited as I was I entered the store with tempered expectations. I asked the woman at the checkout if they still had these two items in stock, and she replied: "Oh, I'm not sure. Let me check for you!" I mustn't lie, that dampered the excitement a bit. I was sure they wouldn't have them in stock anymore. Someone else must've gotten to them first!

But then, the checkout clerk re-emerged from the storage, with in hand, a beautiful new Nintendo Switch console, and at the time my most anticipated game of all time finally within reach: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That might've been the best day of my life.

switch was easy to cop on launch, no one i knew even wanted one.

everyone and their mama wants the switch 2. i wish u all very good luck. i hope we all get one

I managed to get 2 PS5 preorders for launch in. My body is ready. My body is trained.

Miyamoto isn’t releasing anything. He has small takes on game development. The director, producer and everyone else is making Pikmin 4. This isn’t a passion project. This is the next game in a series they want to grow.
I know Miyamoto isn’t hand crafting the game himself. I know he has only a small hand in development nowadays. He’s still decided to be linked to the game, and show that he very much supports it and is involved with it, which is something he hasn’t done for many (or any iirc) other Switch games.

If it was a series Nintendo wanted to grow, they wouldn’t put one mainline title out every 10 years. That’s not growing a franchise, that’s letting someone work on a passion project to keep them happy.

I pre-ordered a PS5 on a golf course. I have full faith in myself that I will succeed with the Switch 2 because I have no idea how I will react otherwise, but I know it won't be pretty.

Reminds me of that woman in 2007 who wanted to buy tons of iPhones to scalp online, paid someone $800 to get ahead in line, only to find out that the store had a limit of one per customer.

I remember walking into a GameStop shortly before/after Easter and getting the last Wii they had in stock.

i didn’t preorder, i got one way later when it was very hard to buy. the stress of waiting in online queues only to have them be out of stock once it was my turn, is not something i wanna repeat

I've never had any issues getting a system. Although, with the Wii my family did wait outside a toys r us for 3 hours to get one. That was a legendary memory for me.

As for the Switch and everything after. I can't see myself ever struggling. Wario64 with notifs on and it's as easy as it gets. That's how I got a switch. I got my cousin a switch when it was selling out like crazy soon after launch. I got a limited edition xbox series X. I did also get several PS5's for people who asked for my help.

So I don't expect to run into issues getting the Switch 2.

I know it doesn't mean anything Direct wise, but just out of curiosity has Nintendo always pushed Nintendo Live this much? Maybe they're trying to grow the event I guess?

Finally. The NIntendo Amico. I heard Miyamoto, who worked with Tommy Tallarico for four or five years on Metroid Prime, was so sad about the Intellivision Amico situation that Nintendo bought the company and is helping doing the console.

I guess someone's mother must be very proud.

Oh uhh direct speculation uhh SEGA YOU COWARDS WHERE IS THE SONIC ADVENTURE 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON SWITCH WITH 1 & 2 WITH CONNECTIVITY TO GBA NSO WITH SONIC ADVANCE 1-3???
☝️☝️☝️

y'know scalping one (1) preorder for everyone on a forum who wants one sounds like a good idea...
I believe that'd be using your powers for good.

not that it really needed to be said but uh

I don't think it's coming in 2023 lol
It's a 3 month contract (albeit renewable) that appears to include post-release responsibilities. That doesn't exactly sound like a far from release thing to me, but it's hard to draw any precise conclusions from it.

yeah I am not missing out this time around

I'll write a god damned scalping bot for a single console if I have to

preorders will probably open in like September 2024, maybe late August
One Nabbit requesting one spot on the scalping bot train from one 🦝. Thanks 🙏

I really want to play super mario rpg, nintendo doesn’t make snes classics anymore so I can’t buy one. They shut down the Virtual console that sold it so I can’t buy it from them. Why don’t they want me to play this game?
Because Square Enix is preparing an HD-2D remake that, like the original before it, will be the last major first-party (outside of Japan) release on the system.
I think the big question re: new hardware is now “is it coming out in March 2024 or November 2024”

but also this is the direct thread so let’s stay on topic
team june lets go
I can’t imagine it coming out in March 2024 if Nintendo is trying to push out 15 million Switches this fiscal year.
I wonder when pre-orders for the new system will open up... maybe 3ish months before release, like the switch? I need to prepare myself for watching 5+ tabs and constant refreshing.
The second the release date is announced I’m buying a plane ticket to New York to attend the midnight launch at the Nintendo store.

I’m so happy for you. It reminds me of when Tears of the Kingdom came out I went crazy trying to get an online preorder of the collector’s edition to no avail. Then I found out Target would (presumably) have them in stock on launch day, so in a last-ditch effort I went to my local Target early in the morning on May 12. I got there a few minutes after they opened and a line had already formed at the electronics counter, so I was scared they’d be out before it was my turn. Fortunately, not everyone in front of me got a collector’s edition, and I left with the second- or third-to-last one they had.

As nice as this merch looks, I don’t know why I would get one if tickets to the event are on a lottery system.

You can get a guaranteed ticket if you get one for PAX early enough I think

New games are always better, but I'm still excited to see more remasters and ports in the coming months. It reminds me of 2018, when I experienced Tropical Freeze and Hyrule Warriors for the first time. It wasn't the best year for the Switch, but I still had some good times with it.

I wonder how they will handle pricing? If a potential Paper Mario TTYD or F-Zero GX remaster is $60, I guess I would still buy them since I have never played either before. It would be really nice if they went the Metroid Prime Remastered $40 route.

Also, it's not rumored anywhere and I don't expect it anytime soon, but a remaster of the Fire Emblem games on GameCube & Wii would be great. I have heard they are really good, but I have no personal justification for spending hundreds of dollars on eBay for only two games.

That $40 price for Prime 1 really threw a (pleasant) curveball. I'm pretty sure that this was the first time in the HD era that Nintendo threw a "discount" on a remaster. Heck, they threw a $10 upcharge on the Tropical Freeze port back in 2018. I'm guessing that it will be on a case by case basis. Paper Mario TTYD can probably get away with being a $60 release since it is a ~30 hour campaign and that is an active franchise with a fanbase dying for a "return to the classic format", but I would hope that Nintendo understands that a $60 F-Zero GX remaster probably won't be that hot of a seller.

And yes, we need Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn ports like yesterday. There is no way I will ever pay those ebay prices. Unfortunately, I feel like both of those games are a long way out from returning.

Current Miyamoto isn’t. He was producer on Pikmin 2 back in 2004. He wasn’t producer on Pikmin 3 back in 2013. His job for years now is basically non video games.
He was General Producer on Pikmin 3, and likely on Pikmin 4 as well. Just because he does non-video game stuff nowadays doesn't mean he's completely done with video games.

The final "big Nintendo game" for Switch will probably be out at least one year after the successor launch and will be a mainline Pokémon game just like DS and 3DS.

Pokémon Black & White 2 was launched 15 months after 3DS launch,
Pokémon Ultra Sun & Moon was launched 8 months after Switch launch.
I agree with this, fingers crossed for a Johto or Unova game in 2024!

I know it will probably end up being a Let's Go Johto release, but I would love an HD version of SS/HG instead.
I personally think that the Lets Go ship has sailed, i'd be surprised if they decide to bring it back after 6 years (in 2024).

What i think is more likely is ILCA handling a Johto game. DPP and HGSS already look quite similar, and BDSP being a faithful remake of DP could reflect this hypothetical remake being faithful to HGSS (with the obligatory removal of the Battle Frontier, i'm still a realist :p). I doubt that they would base a Johto remake off of the original GSC, and i think TPC is well aware of how beloved HGSS with a lot of fans, i think they would try and capitalize on that by developing a faithful remake of HGSS.

I also think its a little too early for Unova, i expect that in gen 10. But other folks have suggested a Unova game being likely this generation, so we'll see. That's just my opinion though.

A remake of HeartGold/SoulSilver would be fun, just to see what they decide to cut out for no apparent reason, and then we'll never get the reason, because game development is more secretive than the government for some reason.

which honestly is very disappointing because Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee was good. Maybe ILCA will make a more competent game but there is zero reason to have trust in them.

I'm pretty sure the only thing more secretive than game publishers are head NFL/college football coaches.

Hahaha yeah, GF can make some weird decisions. Besides the BF, I don't know what they'd realistically cut from HGSS though. Maybe Kanto, to later sell as DLC? Ah never mind, that's probably too cynical.

I respectfully disagree, ILCA is a good team filled with talented people. Just look at this screenshot from their One Piece Odyssey game from earlier this year:
one_piece_odyssey_1.jpg

Looks pretty good, right? The way BDSP turned out is not the fault of ILCA, they did the best they could, being forced to work with very tight deadlines during the pandemic. If TPC gives them more development time for their next game i'm sure it could turn out pretty good.

That is kinda why I said hopefully they make a more competent game. The door is open but I ain't sitting by it waiting for a competent pokemon remake from them. I will wait and see with low expectations.
