I just get the vibe at this point that if they had a major brand new tentpole release this second half, we'd know by now. So I don't think they necessarily need a big event until September where they can start telling us about 2024's first half. I think the rest of this year might just consist of a new remaster or two, more expansions, and something new like a Mario Party sequel or something.

No matter what you vote, it’ll come back to the same result.

There is no June Direct. There is only #TeamJanuary.

With all due respect I don't know which of these is funnier: July, August or September Direct. Probably the September one as that would essentially mean that they are going to Gamescom with Miyamoto showing month old Pikmin 4 and Kawamoto and his team how 2 month old Everybody 1-2 Switch plays.

The date was April 12th 2023 and many of you failed, don't make the same mistake again.

Lmao I can't believe they announced a June first party game after all.

Until the moment I checked it was just a promotional image, no trailer right?

I believe they must've made several changes to the game ever since the first time we heard about it, since QA testers weren't really happy with what it was back then.

I hope it ends up being a fun game to play with friends and that highlights the Switch features because it's 30$.

Also, the game absolutely wouldn't be a Direct announcement(nor were Ring Fit, Labo, Gamer Builder Garage, etc), so June is still very much possible and we still don't have games dated after Pikmin 4, and I don't think they're gonna announce their holiday game just like this.
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, the 2020 holiday game was anounced in a Twitter post

It’s not the same team. EPD teams are literally just creative heads/producers and the rest of the staff(art/programming) just flexes within the company depending on where projects are within their production timeline.
EPD 10 both work on 2D Mario and Pikimin games, same as EPD 5 that both work on the Animal Crossing/ Splatoon franchises

Here's my guesswork for a timeline:

July: Pikmin direct/marketing only

August: BK marketing, twitter drop for something small. Gamescom for bragging about how they built Zelda, and maybe some behind the scenes maneuvering for Switch 2.

September: General direct. New Mario or DK to close out the year, and maybe something else(Detective Pikachu?). Fire Emblem remake announced for early next year. Re-reveal of DQIII remake.

I think that covers the end of this year and runs them through to a point next year where they can start talking about hardware.
What about Metroid Prime 4?

Nah we barely get inside information anymore. If a big game is coming we definitely don’t have to know by now.
Well I don't just necessarily mean from the perspective of rumors. I just mean their "grander" games typically have longer marketing cycles. It doesn't mean the norm can't be broken, though, of course.

I suspect Prime 4 by end of the current Fiscal Year (ideal hope is this holiday, of course). There are other games I know coming to Switch that remain unannounced but I don't believe are 2023-slated.
That's what excites me the most tbh. Knowing Switch will have stuff for 2024 and beyond is very comforting for me.
I can't even imagine what those would be tho, but I do expect some crazy stuff coming in the twilight year and in the cross gen period.
I can see the final year(s) of the Switch being a lot like the end of the 3DS. One or two big swan song games and then a lot of ports and remasters to fill in the gaps as they ready the launch of the next system. I wouldn't be surprised if Metroid Prime 4 is the last major Switch exclusive game we get (either holiday 2023 or Q1 2024) and then the rest of 2024 being remasters of F-Zero, Paper Mario, etc.
I don't believe there'll be much space between the Switch's "swan song" and Switch 2 launch. Tbh I can see Switch's swan song being a cross gen launch title(3D Mario or MP4) and then comes a cross gen period with a bunch of remasters.
It all depends on when Switch 2 comes tho. If it's March 2024 then stuff like DK would be cross gen. If it's holiday 2024, I can see MP4 being the spring tentpole title, DK being mid Summer, and holiday being 3D Mario with Switch 2(maybe cross gen, maybe exclusive and a cross gen game in December).
I don't think they'll want to tank their first party software sales or make for a very dry period for a full year between holiday 2023 and holiday 2024.
Are ya'll still expecting 2D Mario and DK on OG Switch?
Definitely.
I think 2D Mario is very likely candidate to release this holiday season. I think DK will come in the May-September 2024 period. If Switch 2 is out by then, it's cross gen, if it's not, Switch exclusive that receives a patch for next gen.
3D Mario tho... That screams launch title of Switch 2 for me. Unless they release it in March with MP4 and Mario is the holiday game of 2024, but I think holiday launch is more likely. I think it can still be cross gen, like BotW.
Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, the 2020 holiday game was anounced in a Twitter post
Yes, because 2020. That was the first pandemic year when nobody had a clue on what to do, several projects got delayed, so they only announced games like 2 months before their release. They got no reason to do that this year.

Metroid Dread: 4 months
Mario Party Superstars: 4 months
Kirby and the Forgotten Land: 6 months
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: 7 months (at the time of reveal)

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: 7 months (at the time of reveal)
I think Dread is the best example for this. And maybe something smaller like WarioWare was in 2021 for September. That was only 3 months before release as well.

And say what you will about Mario Party’s status as a “grand” game, but Superstars has sold 10 million and Super Mario Party has sold almost 20 million, better than every Mario other on Switch save for Kart and Odyssey.

Nintendo is not gonna kill Switch, when the console is still selling well and is year 6 not year 7, you count Switch years begining for 2018 not for it launch year
No, not generally. The Switch is 6 years and 3 months old, which means it's in the 7th year of its lifecycle. Much like how the PS5 is now in its 3rd year, even though it won't have been on the market for three years until November. 0-1 years old is year 1, 1-2 years old is year 2, 2-3 is year 3, and so on.

Thank you for leading me down a long-ass Wikipedia rabbit hole about the history of Nintendo’s six presidents

All I wanted to know was this Yamauchi story, and now I’ve spent hours researching Nintendo’s long past
Actually the Yamauchi bit I got from a huuuuuuge retrospective on FFVII that the team did for the anniversary. It had a very detailed account of the meeting that led to Square bailing on Nintendo (or rather, Yamauchi very dramatically telling Square to bail and never come back), and then after that big article came out I remember some other devs from that time coming out and admitting that similar things happened to them. Lo and behold, the N64 ended up with very weak 3rd party support relative to the SNES. And it seemed to me like Iwata's whole tenure was then spent trying to get them back.

So like, hearsay and all. But still, I think it's at least possible that it's all true.

My expectation is that late summer/fall lineup will be f-zero gx remaster, a casual title, metroid prime 4 and a platform game (mario or dk) made by EPD

prime 4 and platform epd can be announced via twitter at june/july

f-zero gx remaster and casual title at september direct.

hopefully i’m correct

Yeah, at this point I'm gonna keep my expectations low and say September. Would love to be wrong, but I'm not expecting it. Not that it really matters anyway, I have plenty of stuff to play and get excited for in the meantime. A Persona 3 Remake announcement + the RGG Summit alone would be enough for me to be satisfied, anything beyond that is gravy.

Ain't no way they will casually announce Prime 4 and a brand new EPD game via twitter. I'll eat my switch if that happens

For now, we're likely to get some Switch games announced in the next week between SGF and XBOX shows, so I'm happy to see how that plays out first.

I don't think Detective Pikatchu 2 will be released in the second half of 2023, but if it was, it wouldn't be announced by Nintendo but in a Pokémon presents, I suppose.

On the other hand, the idea of potentially releasing Metroid Prime 4, a new Mario or DK game, a possible F-Zero remaster in the second half of 2023, not to mention the remaster Namco is working on (Starfox or Kid Icarus?), is incredibly exciting, even if it seems optimistic to hope for all that.

Right, I’d expect something closer to the level of those this year. Not to get into the what is and what isn’t “grand” semantics lol, as those are all still big sellers to various degrees.

I've taken a pretty hands-off approach to this thread partially due to the stress of my new job but also in the interest of not asphyxiating natural discussions with my own attempts to drive the thread. However, I think that now is a good time to start our first discussion prompt, which I think aligns well with the current direction of the thread.

Prompt: Predict the Nintendo Switch lineup from now until December of 2024 in as much or as little detail as you'd like. The inclusion of expected reveal timing of games in the near future may be appropriate for discussion. Include as many first or third party games as you see fit. Don't worry about sharing all of your thoughts immediately or in a single post.

I'll provide my own response to this prompt soon, but I'd like to let the discussion start on its own and see some ideas flowing.

With Disney participating in SGF, I'm wondering if we'll see some Switch stuff from them. My assumption right now is that Disney will be showing Disney Illusion Island there, as marketing for that probably needs to ramp up soon, but that won't be a new announcement. Maybe the next TRON: Identity game?

Again, if we believe that new hardware was cancelled relatively late in development that constitutes a significant disruption of the software pipeline. A year of remasters wouldn't be intentional but instead the result of this disruption. Maybe we'll get the games that would've come to Switch 1 while Switch 2 was out, like the last year or so of 3DS.
Yeah, see, I just don't believe that happened. Seems more likely that a lot of insiders didn't realize that the "Switch Pro" they were reporting on was actually just an early version of the Switch OLED.

I really liked the idea!! So here's mine:
2023
June: Everybody 1-2 Switch. Actually ends up selling well, and is more fun than we expect it to be. Third party wise it's a big month, notably RAINCODE;
July: Pikmin 4, Pokemon DLC part I;
August: eShop only title, announced at the June Direct. I think it's something that will really grown on people like Tetris 99. An impossible port comes that month too; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 5 is released;
September: release of F-Zero GX HD, announced at the June Direct. Release of Mortal Kombat 1 and other major third party stuff. Maybe Dragon Quest III remake;
October: that or November is Super Mario 2D Next month. I'm leaning towards November, so for October I predict something that will either be announced on its own or at the June Direct that ends up selling more than any of us expects. Either Mario Party, Animal Crossing spin off, or something in the vein of Ring Fit Adventure or Tomodachi Life. Third party wise, Persona 3 Remake releases on the Switch;
November: the next 2D Mario adventure releases to critical acclaim and becomes another 20m+ seller of the Switch's library(announced in June). First wave of Tears of the Kingdom DLC is released (announced in September Direct);
December: Pokémon Scarlet and Violet expansion and the final wave of Booster Course Pass are released. A third party game nobody thought was possible actually releases.

2024
January: the Side Order Expansion releases. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door HD is released(revealed in September);
February: Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War remake releases to critical acclaim (revealed in September). February Direct happens. A lot of games are announced, some aiming at 2025 which makes Switch 2 enthusiasts agonize in pain. The next 3D Mario is teased to be coming in that holiday season.
March: Metroid Prime 4: Resurrection releases to critical acclaim. Everyone is happy. Becomes the best selling game of the franchise in no time. Best looking Switch game. Was revealed with its March release date in June Direct, got a new trailer in September, another one at The Game Awards and was heavily promoted;
April: nothing, a lot of heavily anticipated third party games and a third party exclusive come that month;
May: Resident Evil Switch is real. Timed exclusive game that's mid ground between a mainline game and a spin off/non-numbered. Nintendo heavily advertise it, Switch OLED special edition comes too;
June: Donkey Kong Country Reborns(announced in September), the new DK game made by EPD Tokyo comes to critical acclaim and sells amazingly well. June Direct happens. No mention of new hardware makes people freak out. New games for summer and holiday season are announced, a lot of remasters, and some are 2025. Astral Chain 2 is announced. Metroid Prime 4 gets an expansion pass announced.
July: Kid Icarus Uprising Remastered is released. Announced one day prior, the trailer for Nintendo Switch 2 is released in that month. The trailer shows first gameplay of the next 3D Super Mario and it's gorgeous. A new Mario Kart game appears too and its graphics are beyond beautiful. In the trailer, people play Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4, DK, Astral Chain 2, Resident Evil, highlighting the backwards compatibility. 4K* and ray tracing are highlighted in the trailer. It releases in October, the same day as the 3D Mario game. It's the Switch 2 killer app;
August: nothing
September: idk some remaster or casual game. Showcase of Switch 2. Animal Crossing and Mario Kart are revealed as Switch 2 exclusives coming in 2025. Astral Chain 2, a 2D Zelda, some remasters are revealed as cross gen games for 2025.
October: 3D Super Mario and Switch 2 are released. The big story expansion of TotK is released.
November: Pokemon Legends Something or Pokémon Remakes. Mainline Pokémon release that's not a new gen. Is cross gen.
December: Monolith Soft new IP.

I'm Team September but I think we're getting more Twitter dropped stuff throughout the Summer. I just don't think they have enough in the pipeline that they're ready to show for three long, meaty directs this year, and I also think that Nintendo has fully moved away from having shorter, smaller general directs outside of Partner Showcases entirely (really, we've basically transitioned back into the pre-Direct era where news is rare, with Directs themselves basically being equivalent to E3 shows now).

this is exactly the sort of response I was hoping for. thanks for getting the ball rolling!

I was interested in trying to guess the Switch release calendar following the big surprise Everybody 1-2 Switch revival so @Raccoon ‘s prompt is a nice incentive. I don’t think I can manage 18 months of guessing though lol so I’ll fill in this year and just throw a few 2024 guesses out. I’m sticking to just Switch 1 here and while I’m ending it at when I currently think Switch 2 is landing, I do think we’ll get some decent cross gen going for a year or two.

June: Everybody 1-2 Switch, Rain Code
July: Pikmin 4, Mario Kart Wave 5
August: Baiten Katos, F-Zero GX HD
September: 2D Mario, Splatoon Side Order
October: Mario RPG something, Fortune Street (willing this into existence!), Pokemon SV DLC1
November: Metroid Prime 4, Detective Pikachu 2, Mario Kart Wave 6
December: Tomodachi, Zelda DLC 1

2024 (just a few guesses)
January: Fire Emblem Genealogy Remake
February: Pokemon SV DLC 2
March: Donkey Kong
April: Something Kirby?
May: Zelda DLC 2
June: Switch 2

Bonus stuff I don’t want to put dates to:

Xenosaga Trilogy HD
Twilight Princess HD, Wind Waker HD, and Yoshi Wooly World for Switch 1 possibly all in the cross gen period. Xenoblade X Definitive Edition for Switch 2. I’m praying, but not hopeful for a Color Splash port.
Mario Rabbids DLC (I forgot the road map at this point and the game won’t let me buy the season pass since I bought it at Best Buy so whatever their loss lol)

Hopes and Dreams

Fortune Street
Mother 3
Zelda Four Swords Online
Famicom Detective Club 3 Remake + New Game
Xenoblade Golf
Zelda Fishing Game

Writing a list of Nintendo's next year and a half is way too exhausting for me, so I'll just leave my boldest prediction here - Wave 2 of Pokemon DLC is being shadowdropped on Pokemon Day and 2024's Pokemon release is just going to be SV's next gen SKUs + DLC bundled in

June 2023: Everybody's 1-2 Switch
July 2023: Pikmin 4, Mario Kart DLC 5
August 2023: Baten Kaitos, Pokemon DLC 1
September 2023: Splatoon 3 Side Order and a shadowdropped Prime 2/3 double pack that's revealed in the Direct this month
October 2023: Thousand Year Door HD and F-Zero GX HD
November 2023: Donkey Kong developed by the 2D Mario team, Pokemon DLC Part 2
December 2023: Mario Kart DLC 6

January 2024: Genealogy of the Holy War Remake
February 2024: Nothing (calm before the storm)
March 2024: Switch 2, launches with Super Mario Universe, Metroid Prime 4, and Switch Sports: We're Sorry The Last One had Problems Or Whatever (idk I'm a N64/Gamecube boomer I don't really play these games)
April 2024: Tears of the Kingdom DLC, also packaged in with Tears of the Kingdom Deluxe on Switch 2
May 2024: New IP from indieszero that Nintendo publishes
June 2024: Paper Mario: Return to Being an RPG
July 2024: Nintendogs: The Realistic Edition
August 2024: Nothing
September 2024: Mario Kart 8 Double Deluxe (comes with all of the DLC waves and has graphical enhancements)
October 2024: Xenoblade Warriors and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe
November 2024: Pokemon: Let's Go Marill and Togepi
December 2024: Monolith Soft new IP

Not predicting third-parties because that's too much for me

Edit: Thinking about it, I'd probably remove the existence of Smash (2025 game imo) and move Mario from launch to October, but idk

I think there's even less reason to believe in a light H2 now than just a week ago; with horse stinker dropping this month and Side Order looking to be dropping within the next season or two.

We're in a very similar scenario to 2021 right now (minus the status of Pokemon); a casual game (Game Builder Garage) is given a short reveal to release cycle for June and the last first-party game is scheduled for July (Skyward Sword HD). The June Direct revealed and dated most of the H2 slate from there; WarioWare (September), Metroid (early October), Mario Party (late October), Advance Wars (pre-delay; December). Really no reason to be pessimistic at this point unless you think they're cramming 7 retail games and a ton of notable DLC in H1 and saving just a few scraps for H2. That's not how Nintendo rolls.

I know we skipped the June Mario game this year but the patented October Double Up (which also regularly includes a Mario game) has been an even more consistent trend in the Switch era:
  • 2017: Fire Emblem Warriors, Super Mario Odyssey
  • 2018: Super Mario Party, Luigi's Mansion 3DS (bonus: TWEwY Final Remix)
  • 2019: Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi's Mansion 3
  • 2020: Mario Kart Live, Pikmin 3 Deluxe (bonus: SMB35, Part Time UFO)
  • 2021: Metroid Dread, Mario Party Superstars
  • 2022: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Bayonetta 3
We'll probably end up skipping August like most years, so no perfect streak, but four releases is the usual average for the September - November period, and I don't see why we can't hit that (perhaps with a bonus for December too). One of the rumored GameCube ports (F-Zero GX or TTYD; depends on if there's anything else Mario), at least one notable EPD game (2D Mario, DK, Tomodachi) and a Pokemon spin-off (Detective Pikachu 2 or Mystery Dungeon) are what i'm sure will show up; and like always there will be something we don't expect.

In the Switch era, Nintendo has been
announcing many of their games closer and closer to release. Prime Remastered being shadowdropped this year is just the latest example of this.

Predicting Nintendo’s game lineup more than a few months in advance is now harder than ever, and imo that’s a good thing.

I did vote September though I do think we'll get a Mini or Partner sometime this summer as well since I imagine they'll want something new at Gamescom. Not totally discounting Twitter drops but I think they have enough third party stuff lined up for a proper smaller summer show at least.

As far as what games we get post Pikmin 4 in 2023, my shot in the dark guess would be F-Zero GX, some kind of Mario Party follow up, and (shooting for something a bit higher) something Donkey Kong related. Could see some 3rd party exclusive published by Nintendo that wasn't on any of our radars thrown in there as well as those often happen.

Ain't no way they will casually announce Prime 4 and a brand new EPD game via twitter. I'll eat my switch if that happens
Good thing that it will never happen. Like never. Even if they had bad Direct for their standards they would still do Direct just to announce these games. It's that simple.

A lot of people are mentioning Mini and that's not too much likely. Last September a lot of people started panicking about being it Mini due to Emily saying it's unnusual airing time (the one it's been pre-Switch era). But the thing is Nintendo would never reveal a new EPD release (Pikmin 4) in a Mini, the same goes for title reveal for TotK. It's the same this time, they will not show Prime 4 and new 2D Mario in a Mini.

I don't think there's any surprises left in the summer...

...but I think for Fall 23:
1. Pitfall 99 - like Mario, Pac-Man and Tetris before it.
2. Metroid Prime 4

Winter 23-24
1. Pokémon Go 2
2. F-Zero GX Ultimate
3. Right before the financial quarter ends, probably some DLC for something, just to show a vague bump in software revenue...

Spring 24 (Super Switch launches--now it gets interesting!!!)
1. Donkey Kong 3D
2. Mega Man Soulslike / The Surgelike
3. TotK DLC - Super Switch exclusive!
4. Master Chief Collection
5. New IP? - Let's call it Furball FaceOff! You're a furry creature who faces off against other furry creatures constantly trying to debuff each other's movement speed by spraying them with ice bombs or sludge. Meanwhile, you can buff you're own movement speed with water pools or grease or... other methods.

Summer 24
1. Detective Pikachu 2: I Think We Need Some Bigger Pokéballs
2. Kirby Extraction - A 20 player online game with 20 Kirbys. You scour the environment for trinkets and trinkets that can be weponized. You can hold 5 elements in your belly and either be transformed by them or fire them at enemies, but if at the end of the round, you can get to the extraction point, you get to keep your good items. Maybe you're also graded by whatever is left in your belly?
3. Mario 128 - The Mario Musou game we've been begging for. Fight hundreds of enemies--but also use the power of multiplying yourself exponentially!
4. The Kid Icarus - Nintendo's take on a prestige single player corridor game.

Fall 24
1. Resident Evil: The Third Revelation
2. Blinx, The Time Sweeper: Nexus (cross play with Xbox and PC)
3. Metroid Prime 2 and 3 Collection
4. Mario Odyssey 2

Winter 24
1. Everybody 1-2-3 Switch - Minier games, stinkier horses, darker alleys, cash transactions only.
2. Pokémon Arceus: Metropolis - Taking it to the city.
