isn't switch heading to its grave A) already obvious and B) a good thing at this point
For me, I'm not concerned about the Switch dying. I'm just really nervous about what the next system will be and if they can make a smooth transition. I know the Wii U era of Nintendo is long gone but I still feel like Nintendo completely fumbling the next launch is certainly on the table.

This has definitely been done already but I thought it was funny

I also think it’s funny seeing all these people on twitter freaking out about this game getting released before [insert sequel to beloved game here] as though Nintendo is a monolith and the decisions on which games are greenlit are made by one or two people.

A lot of people bring up Mario Odyssey specifically as though we haven’t had public confirmation that a 3D Mario has been in active development since at least fall 2019.

I watch Kit & Krysta podcast from time to time but am not really fan when they say something like last Summer, Kit said something along the lines "Nintendo don't want to be too predictable, they will change the schedule" and people starting looking way too much into that, so it was part of every Direct conversation from there on. And what happened? Yes, we got exactly pre-TGS Direct and early February one. I got it, they worked at Nintendo and all but that's it. Recently they said something like "Nintendo don't want to show their developers anymore" while completely ignoring that stuff like Ask The Developer exists. I like their stories about when they worked there and some insights, but that's about it. It was same deal when Switch Pro was in talk last Summer, people starting to looking way too much into what they said.

I would be totally fine with this dry period if Nintendo themselves would just tell us that the next generation of Switch is coming later this year or 2024

Content creation is a real job though

Right but what I mean is they had the job - basically Youtubers but in an official capacity working for Nintendo, doing the real thing and presumably a steady paycheck and benefits etc. to go along with it. So they left that to become just more dime-a-dozen Nintendo fan Youtubers whose claim to fame is that they used to have real jobs at Nintendo.

You know, if it were not for the fact that there are no leaks or rumours for hardware atm, I'd bet on new hardware this fall. The gap Nintendo have left in their schedule by refusing to show anything past July would make for a perfect hardware reveal with a bunch of enhanced/new games running on it.

But no rumours for such a thing means that it ain't happening. Still, it's very intriguing to not know anything past July.

I've been team holiday 2024 release for a long time but I don't think a Q4 2023 reveal for a Q1 2024 release is out of the question, unless I've missed evidence to the contrary. The wide open nature of the second half of this year makes me think that they could be saving something big for it like a next hardware reveal.

2021 is the last year of the Switch
2022 is the last year of the Switch
2023 is the last year of the Switch
2024 is the last year of the Switch
2025 is ...

You say that as if it's some sort of consensus, when it really isn't.

There's never going to be a consensus for speculation related to such a hot topic. But the most credible source so far, DigitalFoundry, has pointed towards this timeframe. And NateDrake, a source that is revered in this forum, has pointed to that same period

… the hell is “fun-datory positivity”?
It's doable from context clues. It's a portmanteau, like Metroidvania. As used in a sentence "I just had to go to a fundatory work event/family book club and the forced positivity is killing me."

Nate has made it clear that he doesn't really know much about what's going on with upcoming hardware (and what he's said in the past doesn't really seem internally consistent...) and Digital Foundry similarly doesn't really seem to be approaching the topic from a place of inside information.

Got it, now that you point it out it makes sense. I guess it’s just such a weird concept to me that my brain didn’t even go there.

Maybe this isn't the right thread to post this thought but

I'm wondering if it would benefit or hurt Nintendo to have the next hardware keep the Switch brand active rather than completely replacing it. Kind of like how GameBoy Color kept the GameBoy alive.

Maybe it's too late for a "Switch Pro" at this point but I'm wondering if it would be better than a complete restart.

Cancel all remaining Nintendo-published Switch games. Everybody 1-2 Switch has killed the Switch.

This isn’t really the whole story. They were based out of the Redwood City, CA office that Nintendo shutdown. Apparently people there were offered the opportunity to move up to Redmond, but Kit and Krysta declined. The reason for that is up to them, but there are many obvious reasons to not want to uproot on short notice. So they parlayed their notoriety into a YouTube channel. You can argue that the content isn’t great or whatever you want, but can’t bring in false narratives on why they formed the YouTube channel.

“There will be no more Nintendo games, we have officially shut down as a company as we believed that we have peaked at this very moment.”

They won't do it but it should just be called Switch 2. No confusion on it being an add on like Wii U did and it makes it clear it is the newer system but they won't do it.

Wasn't the issue that Nintendo closed down their marketing branch in SF and consolidated people to Redmond, and they didn't want to move there? Can't blame them for wanting to stay where their home is. But I do see how they are hustling with the YouTube culture and thumbnails, which I'm not the biggest fan even if I know the algorithm is

Cannot wait for the calls for Stinky Horse to be in the next smash. Also. Give a 1, 2, Switch stage where the platforms are joycon and human characters move them around doing the game motions. Don’t tell me this isn’t a good stage idea. Would be the new poke floats

My late 2024 stuff is informed speculation. It's not baseless but doesn't have the firmest foundation... yet.

I don't mean to derail this thread so I'll make this my last post about hardware, but I think both of those points also paint the picture for late 2024. If a console was coming soon (i.e late 2023/early 2024), these sources would know much more by now

EDIT: See above as well

Eh, not really. IIRC Digital Foundry never even mentioned the NX in an insider capacity until like July 2016, and that was after a delay, too.

O good people of Famiboards,

far too long have we lived under the tyranny of the Direct, its presence lurking like a spectre in the corners of our humble message board, waiting to strike at our hearts and fill them with despair and dismay. Look around you, to your fellow gamers. Look into their eyes and behold the power that the Direct exerts over their spirit. Every facet of our lives has been taken over, every month of the year, every second of the day the cruel finger of the Direct is pressing down on the scale of our fates. We must not turn a blind eye to this despicable state of affairs.

And I ask you, my fellow members of this community: How many of you have ignored the blessings you have received over the course of this generation? Every game you acquired with your heard earned funds only to put it aside into your repository of shame, this "backlog" you speak of. And for what? The prospect of seeing more of these games that will meet the same fate? And is it not the Directs that make us resent our neighbours and suspect them of ill intent? What kind of life is this? No life at all, I say. For a gamer who waits with bated breath to be told what to purchase, what to enjoy... is no gamer at all. They are but a worm, only fit to be crushed under the iron boot of the Direct.

So hear my plea, my brothers and sisters and enby family. It is time for us to break free from the shackles that bind us, these chains that suffocate us, this prison of the heart and the mind. Join me and reject the Direct! And when the Direct comes for you, stand next to your fellow gamers and meet its savage gaze. Say no to this false prophet and its deceitful promises of a better future when we have the opportunity to grasp the present, together, now!

No wonder nobody likes him.

Maybe it's a Miiverse Purple badge.
