Pre-Release Pikmin 4 — Pre-release Discussion (UPDATE: "Your First Expedition with Pikmin" trailer, see threadmarks)

The fact that Aonuma will present TotK gameplay makes me think they will do it with Pikmin and Miyamoto too (if it's not a part of a PIkmin 4 Direct already, which I believe will be hosted by Miyamoto too (opposite to just random narrator)).
I hope by some miracle that they get Miyamoto and Matsumoto for a Pikmin Direct again, just so he can ask about the next Pikmin game for the third time in a row

I would love to, but the fact that Directs are done globally now it's not happening. That was the part of weird NCL only stuff. However having Shigefumi Hino alongside Miyamoto has a decent change of happening.

Really happy about how that Aonuma gameplay turned out, they will have no problem doing this with Miyamoto (maybe it will even be part of the Pikmin Direct).

We only ever see the one red-headed leader controlled in the footage. I'm a little worried the other 3 leaders will remain as NPCs and that story co-op, if it's in at all, will be Mario Odyssey-esque "little brother" co-op with player 2 as Oatchi.

The Japanese product page for Pikmin 4 has a little disclaimer at the bottom for player 2 holding the joy-con differently in multiplayer. This implies that multiplayer is asymmetric, so I think the Oatchi co-op thing might be true. :(

Does it matter?

Pikmin 3 Deluxe introduced a really fun co-op option for story mode. A lot of people were hoping Pikmin 4 would feature something similar.

This could maybe mean the game doesn't have co-op challenge mode or battle mode, either. Or maybe I'm just looking too much into it...

I think you're looking too deep into that disclaimer.

I think you're looking too deep into that disclaimer.

The game enforcing a different control layout for P1 and P2 definitely implies asymmetric multiplayer. If both players control an identical captain like in Pikmin 2 and 3, that restriction wouldn't make any sense.

So apparently there's new Pikmin merch coming out in Japan. Why can't we have this in the west? It's so cool. I never really care about clothes but I'd buy this in a heartbeat
I am not even able to buy Pikmin t-shirt that Miyamoto had in a September Direct (Europe).

Perhaps some Pikmin hype is necessary to make the wait for totk more bearable

What are folks expecting regarding the structure / scope of this game? Pikmin games have been pretty slim and trim at about 8-12h to beat in the past. I was thinking this game would turn that on it's head and expand the scope (eg. more open world, less mission based), but knowing what we do now, it seems more focused on simply making a more accessible version of what we already know and love.

Of course, classic Nintendo marketing could occur here and they could pull the rug out from under us with a blow out!

It's notable that the file size of Pikmin 4 (which may change closer to release), is 12 GB, which is nearly double the 6.5 GB of Pikmin 3 Deluxe. I don't know what that could mean for the size of the game but that is a pretty substantial increase.

Wow that’s surpringly large, differently leads credence to way bigger areas. And maybe uniquely themed caves?

We've seen evidence that there may be multiple landing spots in the same area, which suggests that either areas are much bigger than previous Pikmin games or there might be some kind of contiguous/open world going on. Combine that with caves coming back and whatever the hell nighttime gameplay is going to be, and I'm expecting a pretty meaty experience here

I hope it means it's a similar length to Pikmin 2 rather than 1/3. I know some people like them being brief for replays, but not me. Give me 200+ items to collect again instead of the ~60 that 3 had.

I think a good compromise a longer form game could try is having no overarching time limit but setting it up sort of like Persona where you have X days to complete this story objective. If the time limits are short enough the deadlines would also actually have more practical threat than any of the previous games.

There are tiny hints of this in the other games, but you could do a lot more with the day system in general than just having one big deadline. That idea has never worked super well in practice because while Pikmin can be a short run, the players it will actually force to restart are also the ones who will have invested the most time into their playthrough. The game can be completed in under an hour, but it takes 6 and a half hours to fail at Pikmin. The idea of a Nintendo game of all things that can let you play for 6 and a half hours before making you restart from scratch due to a game over is ridiculously ballsy. The reason this sort of design still works for games that can be spoken of in "runs" is that said experience is usually a time investment of under an hour, not multiple days of play sessions. Adding the ability to restart from any day and the sliding deadline of 3 feel like acknowledgements that it's better as a threat than it is as a real thing that can actually happen to you.

I think Pikmin would be a stronger experience in general if it leaned away from the deadlines -- no deadlines, just explore, build your little army, find cool stuff, don't stress about it.

I guess I'm expecting something closer to 2 just going from the trailer, which could mean a lot of bloat, but hopefully the dungeons/caves are not mostly terrible this time around. I think Pikmin is more interesting with the time management aspect, it works pretty well with the level design, premise and general strategy gameplay, also just because of the novelty and not having anything else like it from Nintendo.

For the sake of "length" I think a deadline system instead of a hard time limit would be a good compromise to keep the tighter pacing of Pikmin, and allowing for a "bigger" game.

Been a while since I have watched it but I got the impression from the trailer that we'll be rescuing crew members in this one, if crew members have a deadline to survival tied to them (maybe the better ending/result of a playthrough comes from how many are you able to rescue) it would be neat, being allowed to explore at night to maybe save another crew member while risking a much more aggressive environment would be a good addition of choice as well, obviously this is more my hopes than expectations, and basically what I hope for is Dead Rising Pikmin.

It's going to be so hard resisting watching the next trailer for this. I can't believe we're only two and a half months away!

I hope so, as cool as the fro captain gameplay and go here was for strategy overall three just regressed the growth form pikmin 2 and it just feels like a sequal to one more than any thing. I’m glad there are elements of 2 in 4z

As excited as I am for Tears of the Kingdom, I'm also kinda glad the dust will settle over the next few weeks, and then we can finally learn more about how Pikmin 4 will work.

Did anyone else just get a survey about the game?

It was mostly about the trailer they showed last time in the direct, but it was real nice. There were also some new descriptions for caves and nighttime, these are direct quotes from the survey:

-"Embarking on night-time missions that feature new and intense gameplay"
-"Delving into puzzle-filled caves, and carefully managing your resources until you escape"

I know all the current focus is on TotK atm, but man does it feel so good and surreal that Pikmin 4 is out in a bit over 2 months.

if it was a drake game i would be disappointed lmao.
Why? I'd be super happy

I have waited for this game for 10 years. Make it compatible with the best possible hardware please.

I actually want to wait to see if it has improvements on Switch 2, but I am not sure my wife will let me.

pikmin is the only piece of media in the world that can get me excited about product placement

(though truthfully I don't think they're gonna do that again at all)

56 days until the release of Pikmin 4💚 I predict it’s going to be my GOTY this year, I’ve waited for the game for so many years haha

If there’s no Direct in June, I predict we will start seeing new info being shared about Pikmin by Nintendo. I’m really hoping for a Treehouse event hosted by Shigeru Miyamoto.

For the sake of avoiding spoilers though, I will watch it after I’ve played the game myself.

I also avoided all trailers & spoilers for ToTK too, and currently playing it.
( Having wonderful time with it.)

If you could guarantee 1 thing to be in the game, what would you choose?

For me, I think water wraith (closely followed by online bingo battle). But I don't expect it to be in the game, I think they'll introduce a new wraith like they did in 3.

Does not look like they will introduce any new Pikmin type apart from Ice Pikmin

lol at Flying Pikmin getting cut from the icon but Rock Pikmin getting uncut from the boxart

Also, I'm not very observant I guess but I only just noticed a full on human house behind them. huh.

I agree that eight is a whole lot, but I also don't think them not revealing a type before release is out of the question, even if they haven't done that in the past
otherwise maybe the white ones glow in the dark now? something's gotta glow in the dark.

The current suite of pikmin types is plenty, there are much more important areas I hope to see this game innovate in

Sort of like new power ups in NSMB games, they can be a wash if it’s just a new coat of paint on existing mechanics
