Yosuke Tamori should be added as a Project Lead in EPD4. (oficially confirmed). Speaking of which, his game still has not appeared, probably something for next system at this point. He was still not credited on anything yet, maybe it was the infamous 1-2 Switch 2 cancelled project but that does not line up.

How do we know this?

I absolutely love him maths Essenc to me m
Shinya Takahashi is the one who took up Miyamoto's old role, if I remember correctly
For me, he is much closer to the role that Iwata played. Moreover, he was the one who appointed him to head Nintendo SPD. Koizumi looks more like the creative face of Nintendo. Anyway they are two exceptional developers and at a time when many things can change negatively at Nintendo, their presence at both the head of EPD is extremely reassuring.

Takahashi literally has Miyamoto's old job (GM for all of EPD)

SPD and EAD merged only in 2015 to give birth to EPD as we know it. Therefore, their respective responsibilities are not really comparable. Being in charge of EAD as was Miyamoto does not amount to the same as being in charge of EPD.

The comparison with Koizumi focuses more on the position he has held since 2015, that of creative fellow. Koizumi is gradually becoming the creative face of Nintendo, and his new responsibilities, such as its appointment to Nintendo pictures, also go in this direction.

Don't see what's so hard to believe. EPD shares much of their engine tech.
Yeah, but that was never the case with BOTW as that game got into production well before LunchPack was established on the Wii U. I would have guessed that TotK is just an expansion of that, but it looks like maybe not then.

Also the original tweet says that "it uses the same engine as Splatoon 3, this engine has first appeared in Switch Sports". Which I don't know what they are refferencing as both of these run on updated LunchPack that's the thing ever since Switch era started.

Nintendo could have been in the process of moving all of EPD over to Lunch Pack 2 during the last few years for the sake of development efficiency. It'll be interesting to see what they've used for Pikmin 4; I'm guessing Pikmin 3 wasn't done in Lunch Pack.

That's really surprising. I guess this was probably done to keep the tools for all EPD games consistent, make it easier to shuffle around staff.

Western publishers are like "Yeah we're Cool Robot, the hip studio behind War Killer 2099, and we make our games with the COOL WAR ENGINE 5" or "yeah we're the latest member of the ConsoleBox family and we make art deco inspired sad dad flâneur survival games with a billion dollar budget using our Concept Game Engine because all our games are powered by CONCEPTS"

Meanwhile at Nintendo:

"Hello we make whimsical games with bright colours and the theme of our game is hands and you play as an elf twink who is probably bicurious because of his attachment to a princess. We wear engineer overalls and work at Entertainment, Planning and Development and we use the game engine ModuleSystem."

to be fair, Cool War Engine 5 makes money this way so they kinda have to, and the premiere Sad Dad game doesn't even have a specific engine name

This might be the first Zelda Yoichi Yamada hasn't been credited on since he began working on the series with ALTTP. Anyone know why?

From Nintendo IR FY23 Q&A (A6):

IMG_6828.png

"starting"

Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom e Splatoon 3 share the same game engine( Module System)

if you scroll up, this was talked about on this same page already with the actual source

wait, nintendo will not have a blank calendar for their system after July??? WILD :p

(seriously, I hope nobody was so deep down the rumor hole that they actually talked themselves into believing there's just the option of nothing after Pikmin or new console with secret launch titles)

they updated they release schedule for this fiscal year, it quite worrysome(only show Tears of the Kingdom, Pikimin 4, the final 2 DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Metroid Prime 4 still TBA e the DLC for Pokemon Scarlet e Violet, dont worry Nintendo will anounce the games for the second half of the year in the tradicional june Direct).

I always wondered how much Breath of the wild had been optimized for the switch and if it was really anything other than a simple port of what was designed for the Wii U.

If this engine history is proven, the use of the term module could be interesting by involving things in backwards compatibility, or even common development between switch 1 and switch 2. It seems entirely plausible to imagine that Tears of the kingdom can also exploit the capabilities of the next hardware.

re: TotK engine.

I think that we should be careful to not equate a Nintendo game engine with modern game engines. Historically "engine" meant something closer to just "renderer", but now often means a whole stack of integrated parts. Instead of a single monolithic engine, the Nintendo approach seems to be a large number of communally maintained bits of middleware that are forked by teams, assembled per-game, and then shared back out.

In the case of Zelda, at some point it appears that Takuhiro Dohta became the lead software architect for Nintendo generally, so it shouldn't be surprising that Tears technology made it's way to Switch Sports or Splatoon 3. And I imagine that is the direction it would flow, as Tears development began well before Switch Sports.

Switch Sports start of development isn't that far away from TotK, if you read the AskTheDev about it.

So yesterday was the last episode of the official Nintendo Power Podcast, quite a shame I liked it a lot, there was still Pikmin 4 in the horizon.

If you were to believe the Zelda team very little of the game was optimized for the Switch due to strict timing.

the release schedule from the investor briefings is entirely meaningless since they don't announce new dates/games/updates/details or anything that would normally be in a trailer or direct or proper consumer-facing announcement. they are just summaries for investors who don't follow the news.

edit: before you say "but that one time..." - yes, like a decade or so ago they would occasionally narrow down TBA windows to seasons and whatnot in these but that was, again, like a decade ago and is not relevant now.

BotW planners who have not been credited since (outside of Supervision/Special Thanks):

Kentaro Tominaga (confirmed to have left Nintendo)
Hiroaki Tamura
Hiroshi Sakasai
Yoichi Yamada
Kohei Kawazoe (Monolith)
Maya Katsurashima (Monolith?)

Yoichi Yamada is the biggest absence. As mentioned earlier, he's worked on almost every Zelda game since A Link to the Past and it's all that he's worked on since the early 2000's. I wonder if he retired or got poached like Tominaga. I can't imagine another EPD Zelda game has been in development.

Edited with Metallord's info. Katsurashima worked on the game too, it's just that the credits list I had spelled her name wrong.

Nintendo is moving a lot of their older designers / game staff into creative teams working on theme parks, movies, Nintendo museum, even toys -- so it is hard to say at this point.

If Nintendo wants to release a new 2D Zelda in 2025, which seems plausible, the development of the game may have already begun. I mean, they’re probably going to do a remake of the Oracle games, but a small part of me can’t help but hope that a bigger team potentially means a brand new title.

also.. man its so weird how people attribute so much of zelda and other games to monolith while they ignore SRD, NERD and the other support studios working on those games. I love monolith but it weirds me out seeing this kind of thing happening

My guess is because of their profile, meaning they make games plus support. But yeah I've seen some takes, specially from xeno fans, that come out as spiteful because all the games that MS supported have been multimillion sellers.

I dont know if it was posted here but SRD was (still is?) hiring for 2024 (I am not sure if this means fiscal)

it's probably because Monolith has their designers sitting high on the Zelda team. we don't hear if about the SRD/NERD designers/engineers since they don't make their own games

Does Yasuyuki Oyagi still work at Nintendo? He was mainly involved in Mario Kart series in recent years with being Director on Double Dash/DS/Wii entries. For 7 and 8/Deluxe, he was Co-Producer and not been credited on anything ever since, not even ARMS which he should have as he had credit in Nintendogs+cats but that was as a Director so maybe (Nintendogs Switch?). He is seemingly absent from Tour too, as he would likely be credited as one of the Co-Producers with Konno in small limited credits we have. Maybe he is working on new Mario Kart in prototyping but given that he is not credited in Tour he probably left the company.
