StarTopic Donkey Kong Community |ST| No Country For Old Kongs

If the Mario movie crosses a billion, Nintendo and Illumination would be mad to not greenlight a DK spin-off film.

Hopefully that means the Kremlings aren't far behind...

DK will definitely be getting a spin off.

I doubt they would go through the trouble to redesign Diddy and Dixie just for a few second cameo. Those two and Cranky have the biggest redesigns out of all the characters here. Well, except for Spike who needed a 3d model overhaul anyway.

Can't forget my boy Swanky. Chunky.was pretty faithful to his DK64 design, but Swankys design in the movie gives him his afro form DKC2 while he wears his DKC3 drip. That seems like such an odd conscious design choice that I can't help but wonder if it's the defacto Swanky design that EPD prefers but we've never seen, like how all the animal buddies that aren't in Returns or TF have modern desigsn that we only ever saw as Smash trophies because they never made it to any DK game post-Rare.

I've now added the new segment of the OP i've made mention of before! Once again need to express my thanks to @CyberWolfJV for creating the wonderful timeline of Donkey Kong releases!
Really glad to help out! And it will be a pleasure to update that soon when we get an announcement ;P

-- also, I want to bring a little tangent in the whole thing about the VV cancelled game overlapping with the Mario movie..

Well, Pauline is there! It's a minor appearance, but she's playing her role from Odyssey, down to the look.. and we know that the movie is on the works for several years.. If Pauline had indeed any major presence in DK Freedom, I don't think it being cancelled is what led Nintendo to repourse the idea for Odyssey.. That scenario would be a little too late to have her in the movie, imo.

Other thing..

Hope Swanky is OK from the car crash! lol

Shigeru Miyamoto: Bringing the world of Donkey Kong into the Mushroom Kingdom. In this past, there was the the Mario group, and then Donkey Kong was a separate thing in my mind. But looking back, there are games like Mario Party where they appear together — to the point where I was thinking, "Why am I separating them?" And when the idea of bringing them together came up, we just thought it was a great idea.

Don't think I've seen anyone else bring this up, but

You can see a portrait of Funky Kong in DK's house. It's the scene with Cranky looking at the SMW styled map

Also, if we get a DK movie, I really want Jemaine Clement as K. Rool!

Mario movie stuff
Eric Bauza apparently was the Diddy voice in the movie, I wonder if he would stick around for a DK movie. He did a good job, sounded just like the DKC TV show so I would definitely be for him being the voice.

Yeah the way they presented the whole DKC part of the film makes it obvious they're laying the groundwork for a movie if Mario were to meet their box office expectations. (and it just blew past everyone's!) There's a ton of detail packed into the designs of the Kongs that is different from their video game counterparts. That's a lot of work when most of them were cameos.

Cranky's redesign is the most drastic of the main voice cast other than Foreman Spike. With the headpiece and red robe giving him the look of a monarch.

Diddy's shirt is far more loose fitting, has a yellow trim around the edges. His hat has a pin on it and the Nintendo logo may be absent but it's hard to tell at the angle we saw him in the movie.

Dixie also has a pin in her hat. Her shirt no longer has the knot tied at the bottom, but is also loose fitting near the neck like Diddy's shirt. They added a white star to it which matches the stars on Diddy's shirt.

Chunky now wears pants and the back of his vest may no longer have the green checkerboard pattern. Swanky is largely based on his DKC3 look but has his hair more styled like his DKC2 appearance.

They'll probably celebritize him for a movie. Regardless if Bauza stays or not, we now know what kind of voice they are probably looking for with Diddy. I liked it. It's like the show, but not as ear splitting.

Haven't seen it yet, but a friend went to see it in theaters and
Diddy had the largest reactions out of the cameos. The jig is up Nintendo! You can't keep sidelining Diddy forever! The people have spoken. 😤

Mind blown.

More specifically; it seems like Diddy's role was cut down a bit in the final theatrical cut. Far from the only thing trimmed out to fit the 90 minute runtime from what we've heard and seen. Wonder if an extended cut is on the table for the home media release; I think the film could really use an extra 10-20 minutes or so.

On Bauza; he's a talented voice actor with plenty of range, so I wouldn't be opposed to him keeping the role in the inevitable DK spin-off.

If they don't keep Bauza for Diddy, I think Greg Cipes (Beast Boy) would do a good job.

I think Greg Cipes has a high chance at showing up in one of these after Scott Menville's role in the Mario movie (nepotism at its finest), but I think he might be on the table for Funky Kong instead.

So if there's a DK spin-off movie, who would you want to play K. Rool?

It might be a bit of a cliche answer as he's made a career out of voicing big scary monsters, but if I had to pick one person, it'd be Keith David:

keith-david-headshot.jpg

And not just because the K canonically stands for Keith!

I see K. Rool as a sadistic, feral animal pretending to be regal and composed. In a word... Ratigan.

I LIKE this casting.

Similarly, I'd volunteer Michael Dorn. You want someone who can run the full gamut of "proud warrior race figurehead" (Worf/Star Trek, General Mozar/TMNT2012), jovial comedic personality (I. M. Weasel/Cow n Chicken) to outright imposing, nigh-unstoppable menace (Battle Beast/Invincible)? That's who'd I call.

Kevin Michael Richardson is another good one, and already "in the system" since he played Kamek in the Mario movie. Let him give Rool the same absolutely UNHINGED energy as Principal Lewis (American Dad), why don'cha?!

Keith David is an amazing fancast for K. Rool. The first person I thought of was Clancy Brown but if I had to choose, I'd go with David.

The material is there for K Rool to be a phenomenal animated villain

The crazy look in his eye, constantly dressing up as other personas, the flamboyance….

The material is there, I NEED them to take advantage of it

Think you accidentally put your pic in my quote lol.

Michael Dorn would also be a great pick. I do love KMR but I would feel a little weird having him do double duty with Kamek (even though KMR and Keith David have very similar tenor and deliveries, to the point where KMR has subbed in for David on multiple occasions).

Just from watching the Mario Movie trailers, I think any of the voice actors for N Gin in Crash might be able to sub in for Kamek, the characters sound really similar to me lol.

I went into that Mario movie expecting so little and left that theater on an emotional high. I must not have been paying attention but I did not expect Donkey Kong to have such a big role. Seeing Diddy and Dixie like that front and center even for just a few seconds was really something special for me. Cranky wasn't clowning on fools like I would have imagined but whatever. That little Rambi emblem, Chunky, Swanky, the Returns rocket barrel and Donkey tossing barrels left and right were just what I needed.

I loved Tropical Freeze but it only feels like since Smash Ultimate that the Donkey Kong brand started to feel S-Tier again. Now Ultimate is a good few years old now but in video game years it still feels like that barrel his been silently rolling strong waiting for this movie and DK is about to hit the turbo.

It’s crazy how DK was literally half the movie. He was the real other Super Mario Bro, not Luigi. To me it’s painfully obvious that one of this movie’s goals was to reestablish DK in the cultural zeitgeist and prime people for a DK movie, theme park and eventual game(s).

And they’ll definitely succeed with that goal!

The stars have never been more aligned for a big DK comeback imo. Not saying it would 100% happen but the fact that we have no holiday game makes it seem like a hypothetical summer Direct would be prime time for DK to get the spotlight again.

If we do have to wait til next year for the next game, then there should be a huge blowout for Kong and friends- The Year of Donkey Kong. In 2024, EPD should be finished with the project by then and we got the DK theme park opening that year in Japan as well. Perhaps we could see some other surprises in store like an announcement of a DK film. It would be wild if there was another game secretly in development too like a DKC6 from a studio like Next Level Games or something. I'm not gonna get myself too excited over that happening though.

With that said, I still pray we see MonkEPD announced this year regardless if it releases this year or not. 🙏

For sure. I would definitely be a lot more at ease if we had just a title and release window, even if it were a year+ away. But I don't well see the game until it's <6 months out, much like how Metroid Dread and Kirby and the Forgotten Land were announced.

Yeah, seeing the movie convinced me Nintendo still has lots of plans for DK. Despite only appearing in the second half of the movie, you could argue that DK had the biggest character arc of anyone in it. He was easily my favorite character in it and I'm really excited about the potential of a spin-off movie.

Heh...yeah, I guess I did! Hahaha!

But I just think KMR would be great because the dude definitely has a quite a versatile range. And I'd love to see him in a role like The Batman's Joker, again!

Upon reflection, it's absolutely insane how much of a W this Mario movie is for our fanbase, the Mario franchise and Nintendo in general. This will easily cross $1B and it'll be fascinating to see how much it ends up doing.

As DK fans, this couldn't have possibly been a better outcome. DK hasn't been this culturally significant since the 1990s. Hyle claimed that this decade is the "decade of Donkey Kong" and that the theme parks and movies are the biggest thing for the DK brand since Donkey Kong Country in 1994. I agree. My thoughts are that if not this year, 2024 will be the year of DK. I think at worst, we'll get a port of Returns to line up with the launching of the theme park in Japan. I'm convinced that Illumination's going to want to make a DK movie as their next project to really push the mine carts and the DK land. As much as I enjoy the Mario movie, one of the main purposes of the movie is to be advertisement of the parks and you can totally see that with the Mario Kart scene, and all the iconography that I mentioned earlier.

I usually don't get hyped up about anniversaries. The Super Mario 3D All-Stars game kinda ruined people's expectations for anniversaries. But DKC does turn 30 in 2024, the same year as the opening of the theme park. Not saying it'll happen, but If there's any Nintendo franchise they'd want to have a big anniversary blowout for, it'd be DK next year. That would be a great twist of fate that DK fans were so sad that Nintendo ignored us on the 40th anniversary of DK, but their plans may be for the 30th anniversary of DKC, once they announced the theme park expansion opening in 2024. The sting of being ignored by Nintendo for the 40th anniversary did go away though when Miyamoto acknowledged it in the 2nd Mario movie trailer. I can't ever be mad at anything Miyamoto says. What a beautiful soul.

My advice to DK fans is don't sweat that much about the DK game. It'll happen sooner or later. Just enjoy everything that'll come in the coming years. The theme park opening is only a year away! Even if you can't visit Japan, just enjoy people experiencing it on YouTube. I'm sure Miyamoto will do a Direct advertising the park. That'll be so much fun. I can't wait to see what kind of merchandise they offer in the parks.

Better yet, we're just 2 years away from Donkey Kong opening in Epic Universe. Really think about this guys. Universal is opening their biggest park ever in 2025, and they're leveraging Mario and DK of all franchises as their primary attractions. Donkey Kong guys. We're about to enter the golden age of the Kongs!

I see Nintendo is eager to use the movie to talk more about DK, huh? 👀

also, I wanted to comment on the timeline we've made for the thread.. and it's really apparent how Donkey Kong, as a brand, dropped hard when Super Mario Bros. debuted, huh? the gap is really apparent..

Though, as mentioned, DK characters kept appearing in stuff up until DKC revitalized the franchise; -- in a way, it's not much different of how we're waiting for a new game since TF's original release.. there's a need for another shakeup!

In the coming years it's pretty likely we'll reach the point where we get consistent DK releases every few years not unlike Kirby. It's kind of funny but I can't even process the idea of that happening. I'm too used to not seeing new DK releases lmao

It's hard to fathom, but it's true. We're right at the beginning of the DK renaissance and I don't think most of us have realized this yet. I get it if people only like DK bc of games, but I implore people to be open minded and enjoy DK in every form of media that we'll be getting in the future. I've always loved DK as a brand more than strictly a video game franchise, which is why I love the cartoon too. I also love movies and theme parks so I'm basically in Kong heaven now lol

The Mario movie is now one of my favorite movies of all time, because DK is amazing in it. Seth Rogen is the definitive DK now! It's awesome because we're finally seeing what Miyamoto's vision for DK as a character has been. We're also seeing that with all the other characters like Peach and Mario. Remember when everyone was confused when Miyamoto said that Mario to him is 25 years old? Watching the Mario movie, it totally makes sense now. I love that Miyamoto views DK as this cocky, vain himbo that hates Mario because he hurt his ego, but deep down it's all a front to cover his insecurities bc he's desperate to gain his dad's approval.

We're also at the beginning of a shift from Nintendo as strictly a video game company to becoming a multimedia juggernaut. The Mario parks and movies is the very beginning of this. Phase 2 is all DK baby! It's such an honor!

I never really thought about it until someone mentioned it on the DK Vine forum, but Donkey Kong is actually Nintendo's 2nd most popular character after Mario. It's really true. Donkey Kong is as recognizable as Pac-Man. That's why we're getting all this love. Nintendo is trying to expand their IPs beyond the traditional gaming crowd, and DK is their most recognizable property outside of Mario to people who don't play games.

I do think it's telling that when Mario, Link, Yoshi etc get these generic spotlight pages on the Switch menu no one seems to care that much but the second DK got one there's been quite a few online articles about it and a lot of attention online. Really shows that what KremlingKuthroat is saying checks out, DK is still popular after a decade of no games and there's a clear sense of demand/enthusiasm for more

This is incredible! Did this clip just confirm that the character between Cranky and DK was indeed Funky, but his lines were cut? I always thought it was him just because he was placed between the two primary Kongs. Are we also getting a soft confirmation that Funky will be voiced by Kenan Thompson? I think that's pretty great casting tbh. It could also be just a throwaway line, but he said that his cousin is DK. That'd be pretty interesting.

Before everyone says that this was just a goofy SNL parody that has no meaning, you may be right, but keep in mind that SNL is an NBC property and NBC is owned by Comcast. Comcast owns Universal and Illumination too so it's one giant conglomerate. I think they're intentionally marketing Funky Kong to the normies. They've been doing skits recently with Pedro Pascal in Mario Kart. Jack Black has said that he should play Wario. Maybe they're teasing these two characters appearances in future movies?

Pedro Pascal is waaay too sultry to voice Wario.

He should be Waluigi.

The Funky Kong ASMR videos are obviously a Nintendo PSYOP to make audiences view him as caring and supportive. A trustworthy figure. A friend. Buy Funky Kong.
