StarTopic Donkey Kong Community |ST| No Country For Old Kongs

I'm not surprised, there had been rumors online for a long time now that they were months behind schedule on certain milestones with this ride. I think the hope was to get it open before the end of May because the competing Tokyo Disney was opening a big expansion early June. But here we were in the middle of April with no opening date or promotion for months until we got this news.

Given this is a low capacity ride (meaning in terms of how many people in the line you can get through every hour) and a new ride system, they need to take their time getting this ready otherwise it wouldve been total hell for guest experiences. People are saying late July at the earliest for when Universal can actually fix these issues, so I'm guessing an official opening now won't be until September/October.

Finally got all the beetallion members and twit coins in Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair, so I guess it’s time to finally try the Impossible Lair. All I know is that it is pretty infamous, even post-patch. I guess I will be busy for the weekend?

Got this done in 11 attempts and about two hours. Of course, I can only imagine how long the actual Impossible Lair would take me as that requires a perfect run, but I think this is the exact level of kaizo I can manage in my mid-thirties.

Will copy and paste my thoughts from the Completed Games thread:
6. Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair (4.5/5)

Impossible Lair harkens back in many ways to DKC3, both in terms of presentation and setup. The addition of an overworld feels like a natural evolution of that game’s structure, yet the top down sections are better integrated here.

Impossible Lair manages to make collectibles feel actually meaningful. TWIT coins and quills are needed to unlock more levels in the overworld, and tonic discovery in those sections incentivizes experimentation inside of the side-scrolling levels. It creates a positive feedback loop that shows just how well both halves of the game are crafted, and they never feel disparate from each other.

This would mean little should the levels not be fun. Thankfully, the developers borrow from over twenty years of experience, and they even go ahead to include some elements from the Retro duology, like timing jumps to collision and a penchant for set piece gimmicks in the latter stages.

Impossible Lair is a bit on the short side, but I think that works to its benefit. The twenty stages (plus variations!) all feel like just the right length, and if anything, I have finished the game wishing there was more.

Ironically however, I think the titular Impossible Lair is the weakest aspect of the game. A kaizo to end the adventure and test your mastery of mechanics is something I should like in theory, and to be honest I thought the platforming sections are genuinely fun, despite their challenge. Where this final level falters is its constant interruptions with a Capital B boss fight, each one marking the beginning of the next quarter of progression. Platforming boss fights are rarely that good, and in this case I believe four is far too many, especially when there’s very few ways to speed Capital B up while you wait for an opening. Were the Impossible Lair be exactly the same, but with two final boss confrontations instead of one, I would be more forgiving of this endurance test.

That is, thankfully, just one small portion of the runtime. Impossible Lair is a joy to play through, and it made me realize I really like these characters and world a lot. The sequel does way more with its setting in just a few hours than Yooka-Laylee 1 did, and it feels like there are many ways in which Playtonic could expand this further.

Whether that happens, who knows. For now I can say this is in the upper echelon of Donkey Kong Countries, and it makes me hopeful that Playtonic could one day retake the mantle now that Retro is done with that franchise.

Cranky's keychain is quite literally:

I've said this before, but it's cool to see more Donkey Kong characters in this very characteristic Mario 2D art style. Cranky and Squawks were in the Mario Movie concept art and Diddy has been in several art pieces before, but it's the first time we get to see Dixie, Chopps and Rambi in that context.

I do hope eventually we get to see K. Rool and Funky as well.

At least that's one small benefit of the DK and Mario brands being so tied together these days.

Wow those key chains are awesome! Seeing Dixie, Squaks, Rambi and Cranky like this is so good! Not just in this Mario style but as this type of purchasable nick knack!

It’s been 60 years already, what’s another year or two for the long awaited come back? DK is coming back in full force you just wait.

Edit: There is something very Rare like in all this. Well in all of them aside from Prof Chops I suppose but I’m getting a really old school feeling from all this.

Something about Diddy and DK giving one another a High Five is something we haven’t really seen in the main games since the original Donkey Kong Country. This statement is probably mega untrue lol but I can’t recall it.

And then you have Cranky actually being cranky? Man when is the last time he’s been an absolute grouch in game?! I love playable Cranky but man he needs to tone down all that giddy sweetness!

These Keychains are absolutely awesome. Even Professor Chops.

This better be a sign of things to come. I want to finally have plushes of DK characters that aren't DK and Diddy! Obviously Funky and K. Rool should be the next characters that deserve new merch but I'll take as much of this new merch as I can realistically afford lol

Rambi’s expression looks closer to the Rare version than the Retro one, or is it just me?
It's the eyes, only Rare had them as ovals like that. It's not exactly the same shape that the 1994 model had, but they've been circles since Barrel Blast and it always looked kind of silly with his permanent angry expression.

...I always kind of hated the Returns Rambi render, and I now realize that's because in addition to the creepy little teeth and the squinting Family Guy eyes Retro loved to give their characters, they moved the eyes to the front of the head for some reason. It looks terrible.

It's funny how keychains can lift our fandom out of abject misery lol. Pretty cool designs imo. I'll echo the sentiments that hopefully DK gets a standalone keychain.

BTW, has anyone seen this tweet and does anyone think it has merit?:

I do think that a "Donkey Kong remake" is extremely likely given Nintendo is on a remake kick lately. DK64, Diddy Kong Racing, Returns, Jungle Beat and even Donkey Konga are the most likely choices imo.

It's IMDB, the site that acts as the tomfoolery site where people can edit anything they want on there.

Wouldn't trust it at all.

I think it's just someone having a go on imdb, but a Returns HD could definitley be a last minute port job to fill out the Switchs schedule. The Nvidia version already exists, basically an HD, motion controll-less version of the Wii game, so I don't quite expect any new content, but it would be something, I suppose.

is false, anyone can edit a MDB listing

Love these a lot!! I do really appreciate Professor Chop's presence in this park. Retro deserved to leave their mark on DKC, so it's nice one of their characters gets the spotlight.

Funky's absence from the park makes the lack of a keychain for him no surprise to me. Still feels wrong not seeing Enguarde anywhere, to me Rambi, Squawks and Enguarde are the essential trio of Animal Buddies.

Cool Krusha model that seems to be Paon-inspired

It's weird he never appeared in any non-Rare game, since he was part of the cast in the cartoon that made Klump popular (which would later reappear in Barrel Blast as well)

Funny how this is how I find out I'm blocked by Liam Robertson. Never interacted with the guy, I assume it's because I'm a part of the Crash community.
Yeah around the time he joined Fami a couple years ago I tried to check a tweet be posted and found I was blocked. Which shocked me because I barely ever, ever post anything on twitter and really only use it to follow artists. Noooo idea what I did or said or even how it managed to be seen by him (the posts I have made got like maybe a dozen views at most). 😅

So I assume it's nothing personal, he must keep his account really tight somehow. Which I can't blame him for cuz... ya know.. it's twitter

Looks like Universal Orlando will start to talk more about Super Nintendo World in Epic Universe tomorrow. Don't think there will be as much new stuff that they will talk about, but at least we will get a detailed, miniature, animated scale of the land if the past videos on Celestial Park and Isles of Berk are any indication.

I just listened to this, he had me on board until he said $70 for digital and $90 for physical. I get were talking hyoptheticals here but if people thought the bitching about $60 for Tropical Freeze in Switch and $70 for TOTK was bad, this would be a whole new level of controversy lmao. If the physical came with some cool merch, like something that isn't just DK, Diddy, a Barrel or a banana, then it would maybe be worth it. Or just also throw in Jungle Beat and DK64 and it might sweeten the pot a little bit. It's still a neat idea, I was just really caught off guard by that price point he threw in at the end
It's amazing how, even when I'm supposed to completely agree with them, Kit and Krysta somehow manage to talk nonsense.

Our first official press release of Super Nintendo World, still being really coy about Donkey Kong Country but hey we do see Funky's Fly n' Buy is called that. So the main man isn't absent from his shop.
