Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

My predictions:

  • At the start, Aonuma says it's been a while, casually talks about how his haircut was debated.
  • He shows the title screen. The ver. 1.0.0 can be seen there.
  • Tutorial area is showed (altough without the real start, with the Ganandorf and the underground stuff) so we are in the sky.
  • UI is fully shown as well, this of course also applies to sound effects and overworld music.
  • While playing, Aonuma casually talks about how the HD Rumble feels nice since it's supported now.
  • Shows the Link skydiving from the sky to the ground (and maybe viceversa).
  • Talks about the arm and powers (maybe crafting is touched on also a little bit).
  • Maybe talks about what the spinning egg shaped things are.
  • I do feel it will not be just only the tutorial area, there will be cuts but it will still be pretty early in the game so without spoilers.
  • Aerial combat finally shown (?) altough this one will be probably saved for the final trailer.
  • The gameplay ends with a huge tease (likely a dungeon) and Aonuma says: I think we will end it right there, with smile on his face.
  • After this, the OLED, Pro Controller and new amiibo are shown. Thank you for watching. The whole video is 12:38 long.

My predictions:

  • Aonuma appears on screen
  • His hair is slightly shorter than in the picture from the tweet
  • He shakes his head back and forth and we watch the hair slightly flap in the wind
  • He covers the camera with his hands
  • When he moves his hands away his hair is once again very short, just like last year
  • Applause erupts from the studio
  • Aonuma brings in his hairdresser, who discusses what it's like to prepare a haircut for these videos
  • Applause erupts throughout planet earth
  • There's some footage of some game I dunno
  • Aonuma announces he's quit Nintendo to become a hair model
  • The earth implodes from excessive applause
The end of life as we know it

This is pretty much what I expect, I watched all the YT predictions on this topic and they were all so unrealistic on what is going to be shown, it was like rewatching their wishlists for the entire game.

Seems like a lot of gaming websites picked up that Reddit Zelda OLED model post/SKU photo. Makes sense that it’s announced here.

Anyone here actually going to try and grab a Zelda OLED?

This is my barber Mr. Fujibayashi, we worked quite a lot on this haircut, it has codename GOAT.

It's likely that when the gameplay ends he will say something like "But there is still a more that awaits you on Link's next grand adventure" and they will show small snippets from various parts of the game.

Tears of the Kingdom looks hysterical. Such a clever way to build upon the physics and properties interactions from BotW - the mushroom creating a smoke screen in particular was super inventive! Also: DAT MUSIC :O . Jazzy clarinet, erhu going wild? Sheesh! =D

Wish Serif was still here to screenshot us all to death. Hope you're doing well buddy!

That new theme they played at the end of the video after the gameplay demonstration was over sounded SWEET

Things I have noticed right away :Stables music is the same, pickup item sound too aswell as the snow theme. Kinda hoped they changed it a little bit.

Re-using the base world map, the UI, audio jingles and some music tracks tells me that they're just completely unconcerned about making this feel like it's own game.

So any "looks like DLC" takes are entirely on Zelda team. Like, 100% on them.

I can't understand why you wouldn't switch those elements up more, just to give the game that zest of freshness, you know? Instead they seem to think familiarity is the most important element here. I think it's a massive, massive mistake but we'll see.

The amount of work, both dev and QA, to make Fuse and Ultrahand this seamless, easy and (seemingly) restrictionless must have been insane.

Folks, building shit, on.the.fly, without any menu-work.

Now imagine what the game designers had to do. You gotta create puzzles/shrines/dungeons/whatever for a game where the player has all the freedom they want.
These game designers had to outwit the playerbase before the playerbase even had a chance to play around.

I'm so going to buy that Pro Controller, am i?

And yet they still won't outwit a lot of the players, judging by the years of videos I've seen of people nearly breaking the chemistry and physics systems in BotW.

Hell, I might've even jokingly said at one point that TotK would be inspired by the things those players did. I'm not joking anymore.

For folks who loved BotW, a very large number of people, more of the same is not a bad thing. I'm fine with it as long as they do it only once, and then throw out the formula and try something new for the next installment. Sure, I can quibble with some of the sameness (music, UI, etc) but I can't be too mad because Majora's Mask is one of my favorite Zelda games. And yes, that took way less than 6 years, but I don't mind waiting. I'm not champing at the bit for a new Zelda game. However long it takes, I'll be happy to play it when it's done. Maybe that makes me a weird fan. I don't know.

Also, it's clearly more of the same and what's different is taking aspects of the first game and stretching them to an extreme. That's a clever sequel philosophy. Hey the first game was this weird sandbox-y take on Zelda, so why not up all the sandbox elements. I'm sure there are other things that have been ramped up but they're being very cagey about the whole thing. Hell, I bet some of what they're sitting on are changes which the conservative fans have been clamoring for (dungeon-like environments for example). We'll see, I guess.

The way I see it here, with how different the Skylands look and sound compared to Hyrule: they seem to have built a sequel literally on top (and probably also under) the first game. That's kinda wild...

Visually the game looks identical to BotW from what I can see here, but the YouTube compression is wild. They could definitely optimise the encoding during video render. It's super cool to see Hyrule so far down below!

Also skydiving has it's own dynamic music track it seems, that intensifies when you speed up. Lots of saxes/clarinets in the exploration music too, in addition to the main theme.

By my (very) rough maths, you can spend over £550 to get everything for the game (before the inevitable DLC)

Am I going to? No. Am I tempted? No comment.

Crazy that we're only now seeing gameplay application of powers we've seen in 2021. As of course, it's as free flowing as it gets. I don't think anyone expected those powers to be that crazy, especially the Fuse one.

My gripe is that I wish the UI was more different, and the music in the overworld too.

Remember folks, Botw had 100s of puzzles designed around rune abilities.

Imagine what crazy puzzles they're hiding that you have to solve with these new bonker abilities?

The pessimism is too much and unwarranted. It's okay to be disappointed.

On the side note, I'm genuinely excited about all the hidden secrets in this new world they built 👀

RIP to the rumoured switch pro that was supposed to come with this game

"In TotK, you can build your own viking boat, put the Switch Pro rumours on it, sail it off remotely, and then shoot a fire chuchu arrow at the boat to give it a viking funeral. The world is yours to create!"
