Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

Commonwealth is saying what I've been saying. Not allowed to see Zelda until after the Mario movie. Maybe around April 12th or beyond. Nintendo wants gamers only focusing on the Mario movie.

An intense one month marketing campaign leading up to release.

There were only two bad things about Divine Beasts; their interior presentation is fairly uniform and the overall "tasks" of each dungeon are the same.

In every other capacity, they're the future of Zelda dungeon design. They have a significant buildup, they have creative and fairly free-form problem solving approaches, they put mastery of the moving pieces into the hands of the player, and they're interwoven into the world at large as their own set pieces.
Only part I really liked about the divine beasts was getting to them I'll be real. But the whole open form design thing can be expanded upon to make something incredible, I really think it comes down to:

1) Scale. Divine beasts were over way too fast for being the 4 main attractions of the map corners. I think a lot of people expected sprawling labyrinths that were like extended shrines.

2) Themeing. Give me specific gimmicks for each one. Unique color pallets. Something to make one stand out from the other.

3)Puzzle variety. The whole shifting dungeon thing is cool, it's what makes up the majority of each divine beast. They can definitely improve on this by having more shrine like elements.

I was just sitting there thinking "Uhhh, the fuck is even happening?"
Getting my first Blood Moon scared the living heck outta me. Meeting Naydra was one of those moments but in a more positive sense, as was meeting the Lord of the Mountain. And Vah Ruta blowing me out of the sky when I tried nearing it. And the Lynel at the end of the Lanayru Promenade. And and and...

Heck, this game man.

Of course there could be more stuff, especially in terms of unique interior structures
This is the single main point of improvement for me: more interesting (indoor) locations. Seems like they'll nail that going by the art book.

None of this is confirmed, at all. There aren’t even exterior shots of the areas you’re describing. It’s all just based on heavy speculation. There very well could be but it’s not true to say it’s confirmed.
Based on the description you provided in another post, I understand what you mean now. Yeah I definitely agree with you we likely aren't getting something like the forest temple from OoT or any Twilight Princess type dungeons (City in the Sky aside as I can see there being something like that in TotK).

Just to foster some fun discussion, what would be your dream approach to dungeons in TotK?

I really love seeing how diverse the opinions are in this thread. I think there's a lot to learn from what others value in their gaming experiences.

Also, anytime I hear that the sky islands are not going to add that much in terms of explorable area it makes me wanna work harder at finishing that island compilation I promised! 😅

Truth be told, I've gone through a number of procedures lately and have been on some pretty heavy pain meds, making it hard to have the energy for this project. It sucks though because I'm just sitting right now on 54 high definition images of sky islands from marketing screenshots, the last trailer, and title reveal teaser.

To report on the progress of this project: I've compiled all the images I need, ran them all through an AI upscaler, and did some map shenanigans using the 3D model of Hyrule made by "v7x" on Sketchfab, which allowed me to identify a lot of the sky islands and where they're at.

I still have more sky islands to locate and identify, and I wanna go through and enhance the images further to get the finer details to show up. Regardless, trust me when I say (as someone who has probably looked at sky islands a little bit too much!) that in total there's way more 'surface area' to explore than you'd think.

Also, I posted this in the spoiler thread a couple of days ago, but u/CryZe92 of Reddit managed to make this really awesome chart where they found the rough size of the great plateau's equivalent in the sky (basically what we think is going to be TotK's tutorial area as a sky island).

I'm almost more excited for this than a new trailer

Except the Mario movie comes out on the 28th in Japan.

Aw shucks. I wouldn't have your expectations too high! Really I'm just trying to get the best shot of every island we've seen and not have any duplicates (some bunches of islands look completely different from various perspectives).

I should be realistic though, as with the way things are going now I might not even get this out before we get a new trailer or direct for this game.

Because of that I might just create the post with only some of the sky islands identified, and then have the rest for y'all to dissect and figure out what they are. The purpose ultimately is to just help others see how much larger and more numerous the sky islands are than they might think.

That chart I posted from Reddit shows that pretty well I believe. I know many were saying the new set of tutorial islands didn't look to be as grand as the great plateau, but from some analysis we can see otherwise.

Nintendo has been pretty clearly pushing people to play/revisit BOTW before TotK comes out. I wonder if this strategy has anything to do with the nature of TotK’s design (does having knowledge of BOTW Hyrule make TotK a better experience?).

One of these videos is going to sneakily be ToTK footage and we'll only find out once someone analyzes the shadows or something

Don’t know, I think they just want to promote the game without showing it (until the Direct/overview trailer)

It's interesting to me that Nintendo must have plenty of data to guarantee how much people loved BOTW and are willing to buy the sequel.
To the point they don't need to market TOTK on how it improves and differentiate from BOTW. They probably have enough data to be sure that a OOT -> MM (expansion pak aside) drop is pretty unlikely.

Btw, not trying to say MM was a commercial failure as selling around 3.5 million with 1 year development is the definition of it prints money. Just comparing the users that bought Oot but didn't get interested enough to buy the sequel.

The strategy is that they want people to buy and play BOTW so they can buy and play the sequel.

How long will these vouchers be available? I’m tempted to double dip with the digital TOTK to accompany my CE. My kids will want to play it while I’m playing it, and I ain’t switching out my game card over and over.

Just don’t know what my second game will be, ironically for the same reason, as I don’t want a digital version of a game my kids will want to play on their Switches.

I'm getting tired of the talk over this games marketing. We really should just wait till the 12th, one month out, at the earliest before getting all doomy.

You're right, but on the other hand there's just not really anything else to talk about until then. Other than artbook stuff, but I think most of us are in here because we want to stay away from that.

I'm feeling optimistic about this coming week, though! Maybe we get the OLED finally, at least that'd be something.

I could leak the artbook in this topic then get banned. Everyone can talk about Dark Cloud taking a ban to give everyone something new to talk about.
Then the Zelda Direct will be announced Monday, if the Old Ways are still relevant

They haven’t announced when they will run out, if at all. Note that they were only temporary in the US, in all other regions they’ve been available since.

I hope I can just do it right before TOTK hits, and better my chances of Nintendo releasing something only I will want to play.

Thanks for the answer!

It looks like the there’s an object in the art book that got the text written on it translated.
Let’s not discuss it here because obviously if this is correct then it contains spoilers and that it’s related to the art book.

Edit: By spoilers I mean heavy spoilers. I only read a couple lines but it looks like it's revealing main story details.

Now you got me interested. Care to share the link? I’m avoiding the spoiler thread because at some point people speculation will be to close to reality and I will be pretty spoiled.

It’s on a small subreddit, r/TotKLang

I think the translation is spoiler heavy, i mean mainline story details, and I only read a couple lines of it.

I can’t believe that
We’ll be able to explore the vast lands of Hyrule and the skys above!

But for real, let’s keep discussion of the actual text to the spoiler thread

Yup, already made a post over there for those interested. No spoilers in this thread from me. :)

Thanks for the heads up, I have enjoyed the speculation in that thread but that’s all it’s really been without context, if you add the context of text, then thats too much for me and I won’t be going back to that thread. I have noticed that more and more people seemed a lot less enthusiastic about talking about the pictures in the art book lately anyways across all threads in different forums.
I think the people that went the art book route, really for the most part, wanted some level of more info, they got what they individually thought wasn’t too much of a spoiler and were satisfied enough for the time being.

Someone on Reddit has a pretty plausible theory:

that the glyphs are a kind of key that must be scanned from a particular perspective or vantage point in the sky which shows the image at the correct orientation, and that this will unlock a dungeon or something similar. this forces players to think about the map in a new way.

could be a pretty cool puzzle which starts on the ground around each glyph and then encourages exploration of the sky islands above the surrounding area in search of the ‘correct island’

idea seems obvious in hindsight but I haven't seen it laid out like this before

For those discouraged about Nintendo’s marketing efforts so far, I will say the art book highlights an insane amount of potential and got my super hyped for Tears of the Kingdom. Without going into any specifics, it’s very clear this game will take the BotW framework and make it a much grander & complete experience. I think when it’s all said and done, this could be the greatest Zelda game ever made.

Also, I truly believe the final trailer we see for the game will be similar to that E3 trailer for Mario Odyssey where they first revealed the capture mechanic. It’s remarkable how little Nintendo has shown of this game and the art book 100% confirms that. This final trailer is going to blow people’s minds.
