Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

I want to bring wildlife up to a sky island with the quadcopter and establish a zoo, I can green goop together logs to make fences so they don't accidentally or purposely run off the island.
I will bring all the Bokoblins into sky and make a sky prison. Then I will free them and will be watching how they are falling into death.

What if we can build a cage, attach the cage to a max power quadcopter, lure a molduga into it and then fly it out of the desert.....omg I have to try this.

Sky Islands, for example, should be just an instant win of an idea, something pretty unique in an open world of this scope, a huge expansion of BoTW's already impressive verticality, a playground for a ton of interesting gameplay concepts, and a neat way to capture and expand on the explorative aspects of BoTW while reusing the same overworld, and somehow the marketing has messed up to the degree that they're still being casually dismissed as just some floating rocks and have people asking where the fishing rods are
I think what's really cool about Sky Islands as a concept is the idea of linear challenges in a non-linear structured game. I think Matthewmatosis talked about this in his Wind Waker review iirc, how Wind Waker's island concept was a great way to make a game non-linear, but also have challenges that are specialized on the islands themselves. Of course, it didn't really work out that way in the actual game, but it was a neat idea. Seeing that this might actually happen in Tears of the Kingdom is pretty exciting.

Wait, if you get a bow that fires 3x arrows, and then use those news arrows shown in the last trailer (that automatically hit an enemies' head), will each arrow hit each head of a Gleeok? Maybe that's how you stun a Gleeok.

I like the first look trailer of the game a lot. Very good atmosphere and tone.
Made me very hyped.

I also think the E3 2021 teaser was cool. The change from the recapped depressing and dark sequences underground to Link skydiving between these bright floating islands was very effective and the rest they showed was interesting.

I think the trailer #1 for the name reveal was not very exciting and way too short.

And in trailer #2 I didn't like the voiceover very much and the editing was not the best, so at first I was underwhelmed as well.
But I think it showed enough interesting stuff people could speculate about.

So, yeah - I hope they end the marketing on a high note with a superb trailer #3.
But I don't need the game explained to me in detail. Personally, I don't want a treehouse or indepth previews anymore.

They will definitely show gameplay before release. Can't think of any first party Nintendo game (apart from shadowdrops) that haven't shown a gameplay before release, the UI and everything else.

It’s been one whole page now, so I need some confirmation:

Does this game allow you to explore the land of Hyrule both via land AND air?

Nobody needs to “trust” Nintendo at this stage unless they’re making a decision to save $60 right now or not. And even then, when the game comes around, and reviews hit, you can decide not to spend said $60 on the game and nothing is lost.

It’s wild in here. Marketing will ramp up when they want it to. Either speculate about the game for fun, or do something else
$60?

I just want a trailer that I can rewatch once a week until the day of my death like the BoTW Switch Presentation trailer. Once I have that, I can peacefully wait for the release with no worries.

I don’t think we’re getting a BotW switch presentation trailer. Expectations shouldn’t be that high considering it’s arguably the greatest trailer of all time.

People aren't dum enough to imagine how stupidly crazy these vehicle customizations options will be, I almost want to open up Paint to illustrate the insanity.

I don’t want to assume too much in that regard. It does seem against the Breath of the Wild ethos to limit creative freedom when building things, but we don’t know that the vehicles they’ve shown aren’t among say, 3 of 10 templates you have to use.

It's fair I think to assume they aren't just based on the fact that the car doesn't have a very aesthetically pleasing design. If it was a specific pre-designed template it would look a lot nicer.

I can confirm as your residential pseudo insider that more information on TOTK is coming.
But what if it isn't?
Maybe Nintendo is scared because they forgot to work on the game and they're scrapping to finish the game in the 2 months left before release? They should ask game freak for help to finish the game in time.

Idk how I’d feel about a building menu would be weird

And making a custom car would be a lot of work without it

So idk where thag leaves this

Based on the brief footage we saw plus what was possible in BOTW with Octorok balloons (i.e. attaching them to whatever to give that object a defined lift force at the connection point) I believe the whole thing will be completely freeform and modular. If you want to make an 18 wheeler go find 18 wheels and glue them to the sides of a flat base wherever you want. If you want to glue a flamethrower to the hood of a sports car sized vehicle go for it. If you want a bomb launcher on your hot air balloon go for it

Just based on the design ethos of BOTW I think it has to work this way.

I'm gonna be honest. The game is rapidly approaching, I don't really care at this point if we get more info or not. As we've only got till like May 5th before the embargo lifts on reviews I would assume.

Seems possible but I don’t want to get my hopes up and be let down

I don’t remember the octorok balloons from the first game seems cool though

You could drop an octorok balloon on more or less any object in the world and it would tie itself to it. People built flying rafts from 4 balloons, you could tie it to a bomb, a mine cart, all sorts of random things. Even weapons.

Wow what seems insane

If this has full no reigns this could be crazyyyyy

30 wheel flying tanks, giant train to take you across hyrule etc etc

The community will go crazy With it

Is there anything you have in mind to make?

In less than 2 months, we will have:
  • A bunch of new puzzles to solve.
  • Many new places to explore.
  • New quirky NPCs to talk to.
  • New hidden lore to uncover.
  • A brand new Zelda OST to binge listen to.
  • New bosses to fight.
  • New mechanics to master.
  • Countless potential for emergent gameplay.
The excitement is really starting to set in for me now.

Yeah I totally agree.
The time for more substantial info was probably last month.
If we go through march with nothing on zelda TotK it's just better to wait for the embargo and the game release
It's only 2 month, it's not a long wait

Hope it’s not to similar to botw and gets stale quickly

Nothing yet, I'm not great at imagining stuff without being able to play around with it first.

Yeah this realization has been hitting me too.

I’m not disappointed in the world reuse and art style reuse like some, but it definitely made me take for granted everything else that’s guaranteed to be new (especially because we haven’t physically seen much) like everything you listed

The OST one in particular hit me last week. Like, I hadn’t thought of the fact that there’s gonna be a new battle theme that is permanently drilled into my head over the span of 100 hours lmao

There's going to be limits on what you can build in some form, I don't think you're going to be able to carry 16 wheels around with you. I think most vehicles will need to be made from what is immediately around you. Some areas will have more parts than others. I'm sure there will be youtubers making challenges like that, transporting parts from across the map to build crazy stuff. But for most players, I think the builds are going to be much more simple.

Like every system in botw, the idea is still based around moment to moment gameplay. These are disposable modes of transport. They aren't going to become part of your inventory and you can pull out a car whenever you want.

I agree that it makes sense for the freedom to be there. I said as much in my post. But I'd hesitate to assume it's there. It sounds like a lot of work, and it also opens the door for a lot of time wasted on building a plane that just doesn't fly. Perhaps there's an in-between, where you have schematics for working products to cover anything the game actually requires, as well as the freedom to be dumb as.

We’ll have previews for this game in April. Previews are where it’s going to be exciting

Yeah that seems likely too. I think there were some NPCs who told you about attaching Octorok balloons to stuff, I'd imagine there will be similar guides within the game on how to construct a particular vehicle or something.

I just don't think any of it will be menu-based, or like template based.

Ah, when I said template I didn’t mean to imply anything about how you assemble them or the UI. I just meant the game would make it obvious, like a recipe of sorts, for building a hot air balloon. Your hot air balloon is your own tho - perhaps you use the key components and the base is some planks in a haphazard cluster, not a tidy basket.

Now if we can find a really small sky island, attach propellers and the control shaft to it we could fly/steer the whole island.

Knowing how the Zelda team likes to take old ideas and improve upon them, I've been thinking about how both BotW and now TotK have a big emphasis on advanced ancient technology.

Ever since seeing the stone golem from the E3 2021 trailer, many have made the comparison between it and BotW's Guardian enemies. I think that comparison might hold more truth than we initially thought, and in a far simpler way too.

Guardian Scouts were able to store weapons in their bodies, which they then use during combat trials. The stronger the variant, the more weapons are held.

The major reward for defeating a guardian scout then was to be able to take its weapons, and to use them for yourself. I don't think this will be too dissimilar to how it works in TotK with the more robotic looking enemies. The exception here being that instead of rewarding you with a weapon you will get a weapon part instead.

Notice that on the Zonai Golem the connection point is on the exterior of the body, facing outwards. Naturally this would mean that the weapon part is in the interior, being stored away in the body much like with the guardians.

This makes a lot of sense, I think, when you consider that in order to find Zonai parts that will help you to explore the game (wheels and propellers) you need to go exploring for them. If you want Zonai parts that will help you in combat, you need to fight for them.

This also begs the question: will Zonai golems be able to have more than one weapon part stored in them? Well, looking at the precedent with what has been done in BotW I think that possibility is not too far off. They could implement this by having a wide range of different guardian type enemies, with the tougher ones possessing a greater number of components to loot.

Also, on a possibly unrelated note: here's a Peahat maybe? There's a suspiciously placed propeller on the ground that's definitely turning. It could also just be there to create updrafts on the island too though.

DON'T TALK ABOUT ZELDA!!!

Nintendo called me. It was bad... they told me they didn't want me talking about the new Zelda game or getting hyped for it. They told me if I did they would kidnap my family and torture them while making me watch...

I then heard the sound if a bone saw followed by hellish screams of anguish... I heard... I heard what sounded like Mario's voice... laughing... I think they wanted to make a point.

Nintendo only wants you talking about and playing Bayonetta Origins and buying tickets to see the new Mario movie. Stay away from Zelda!!! You have been warned!

Luckily I don’t talk about Zelda I only write about it in online forums.

Take a seat Nintendo.
