StarTopic Metroid Prime Remastered |ST| Prime Prophecy Fulfilled

Before tackling the final boss went to explore some rooms I missed and I think this is the first time (without a walkthrough) I've got all the energy tanks.

With 91% completion and 09:52 clear time, game's done.
I'll leave my full thoughts in 2023 games completed thread tomorrow, but long story short, what a god damn phenomenal game and series.

The one thing that struck me playing the Remaster, apart from how great the controllers are and how drop-dead gorgeous the entire thing looks, is that it's so.. short and compact, at least in relation to, say, Hollow Knight. Like, sometimes it feels like some areas should've been allowed more time to breathe, but for the most part, it's all killer no filler. The world is large enough for it to feel imposing, but small enough for it to be just orientable enough, and for backtracking to not feel too much of a chore. It's difficult enough to provide bite, but doesn't make you feel like you're banging your head against the wall. The tempo of the experience is dense enough to keep a beat, while still allowing a sense of serenity and desolation to seethe through. The secrets and collectibles are hidden enough so that they feel like a delight to discover, but not so much that it feels like a daft and far-fetched endeavour to go for 100%.

The act of balance here is just nothing short of immaculate.

Yeah, HK’s length is a bit of a joke really. Someone really needs to do something about that: like release a director’s cut with way more QoL options, or honestly just retroactively cancel it.

Out of curiosity, what playthrough is this for you?

For me it's my first time ever replaying it and my first time playing it since the Wii U vc in 2015 and I feel like it's still a surprisingly long game all things considered. Took me about 13 and a half hours for about ~75% item completion? I think my original run took about 16 and a half hours or so but I can't remember.

That's pretty long for Metroid though yeah, dwarfed by Hollow Knight.

Oh, it's, like, my 7th or 8th. Maybe that colours my opinion, haha.

Excited to try this docked for the first time later! The last time I played this game was whenever the Trilogy came out and I remember really liking the pointer controls then. Will mess with the options for sure

Either way, the train is already rolling. I don't think they were waiting for any reception. I also believe we've all been talking about someone's poor interpretation of circumstances and events (like so often) but because they sometimes know about marketing plans early, we're giving it much more time of day than it's worth. What we've heard from that Belmont guy's post back in 2021 is also what makes the most sense, Retro setting the bar with the first game themselves and then having another studio (you'd think it'd be Iron Galaxy who was trained on the job with this one already) take primary for the other two with obvious oversight from Retro/NCL to the spec of what the first one was like, freeing up Retro for the new one while not impacting continued reworks of the older two.

The only thing I hope the reception is making them do is revise the decision to not have the OG devs in the credits and update those and avoid that same drama with 2 & 3 and also maybe look into getting the beam lights back in there or back in there stronger since that was such a beloved thing.
The other factor for me is that Prime Remastered wrapped up development during the marketing period for Metroid Dread, when it was pretty clear Nintendo were committing to the series by giving Dread a huge push and using it to launch a hardware revision. The fact Dread then rapidly became the best-selling title in the series is another factor that Nintendo would've been able to take into account when deciding on plans for Prime 2 and 3 remasters.

One thing I haven't seen much talk about are the new animations, primarily new running animations in cutscenes. The new running animation reminds me a lot more of how Samus runs in the MercurySteam 2D games.

I know shit is great for Metroid fans right now but this is for @Aurc whenever they may need it

Halfway through the game and, boy, what a pleasure to play, even after all these years. My only complaint would be about the save points, which are few and far between. I hope that Prime 4 has at least auto-saves before and after the bosses.

Also always love how readable the Metroid maps are, even in 3D it’s clear where you’ve been and where you have to go. The only thing you could do to improve that a bit would be to borrow from another Metroid-type game – Resident Evil 2 Remake – and use another color for the rooms in which you have found all the secrets.

Speaking of RE, I hope Prime 4 has an even more lonely and almost scary vibe than this one. I’d be down for a survival horror-lite game, especially at the beginning when you don’t have your powers.

Finally got the hookshot! =D Had been looking forward to that one for a while.

Save system still kinda sucks, I actually died backtracking to a save point because I didn't want to lose progress... Autosave functions in modern games are a godsend, and I retroactively appreciate Dread's saving system a lot. Doing an autosave on elevator rides couldn't have hurt here. I get that dying feels more impactful with limited saves, but this feels too much like a '90s JRPG to me and a better balance can be found.

Proud to say that I figured out the path forward after acquiring the spider ball without using the hint system! I remembered that sneaky little room from way back during the first three hours or so.

Too bad that I jumped into the sunken frigate location without the gravity suit after the Hall of Elders lmao. I don't know where to go next, but considering I just unlocked the ice beam, that seems primed for a snowy/icy locale...

Can't wait to dig back in tonight. First playthrough has been magnificent so far, 8 hours in.

Wow the metroids (the enemy not the game) work so much better in 3d.
In the 2d games they're usually in the final rooms when you're full powered up and they're pretty easy to kill with the ice beam super missile combo, and you can always see from where they're coming from.
In 3d instead they're something else, they're fast and can charge you while you're not looking, especially near the endgame when you get to fight tons of them. They're such an amazing enemy in prime.
I'm near the end of the game now, only 3 artifacts left and almost at the 15 hour mark, the game is indeed splendid from start to finish but it can get a bit tiring during some backtracking sections since the enemy respawn and attack you non stop. Other than that it's easily a top tier metroid game.

If it makes you feel any better, I think everyone jumps down the sunken frigate without the Gravity Suit. The game almost pushes you to do so. Retro definitely wanted that classic "Oh you can't go that way yet, good try though" moment that the series is so beloved for lmao

Did this on my first playthrough back in 2002 haha. I feel like the game purposely trolls you, because it basically leads you there right after getting the Ice beam.

I did the same too. It's extremely irritating but nothing to feel bad about

Hahaha right?! My common-sense detector told me "You have to take the elevator closest to the save room," and who was I to question it?!

they did new animations for remastered and yet they left in the bad version of the phazon suit acquisition cutscene :(

Got the Spiderball and completely at a loss. I’ve gotten the hint of where to go next, went as far as I can on multiple paths in Chozo, Talon Overworld, and Phenandra.

I was just bragging to myself last night that I’ve made a lot of progress from such vague memories.

STUCK

In case you want a hint:

Chozo Ruins are your friend

In case you want the solution:

In the Furnace area in Chozo Ruins, there's a room containing a spider ball track. It's the track right next to a morph ball passage

I’ve been there! 😅

I’m in the
Frost Cave
and can’t get the
stalactites
to fall.

And shooting 40 missiles, they finally fell. WTH.

I beat the game twice in a week, 100% both times - on hard the second time, which honestly, wouldn't do again, it's more tedious than not. Anyway, my wife and I took turns for the first playthrough, this is one of few games she loves. What a dream come true game. This remaster is a miracle, a gift especially to me, since Prime is probably in my top three favorite video games and has been since I was 12.

I hope we get Echoes at the very least, remastered like this (Sanctuary Fortress is one of my favorite worlds in gaming), but if not, I'm so happy this game exists.

I'm very happy it has a wider audience this time. It's such a special video game. Can't wait for my physical copy to get here.

Played an hour of this and it was wonderful, but I cannot play it any further in good conscience knowing that I never went back to beat Dread and dropped it around 5 hours in (how and why? No clue… what else released around that time lol)

EDIT: Ah, ACNH HHP is what whisked me away back in 2021 lol / screenshot history told the story

Anyway, a couple hours into Dread tonight were a delight… having this waiting at the end for me is wonderful motivation!

This is a sobering reminder that I got stuck on the purple EMMI and just never got past it :/ Maybe someday…I want to love Dread!

Wild!!! It worked on the first try for me, but man, if I was in your shoes, I would've been absolutely dumbfounded lol

Were Metroids in this game always called "Tallon Metroids" or is that a new change? I could have sworn they were just Metroids in the original.

Just lost over an hour of progress in the mines on the way to what I assume is the power bomb upgrade.

This sucks.
whew, got the power bomb and found the save point on my second attempt. took me way less time and i was able to keep a lot more health just by knowing which color coded enemy was coming up.

i don’t love having my time wasted. i’m glad i’m through that part, hopefully there isn’t any more sections like that..

There isn't really, I got to the savepoint there with one energy tank left only to be met with the turret enemy, which brought me down to 24 health.. Only to then have to go through that electrical maze thing, nerves were high but I did make it. The game is pretty easy from there until the very last fight I thought anyways, which I didn't lose at, but got close.

Not really, that's pretty much the spot for gauntlet runs/losing progress in Prime. You're pretty much past that now.

Looking forward to the physical release to play it, it's been so long since I played Metroid Prime.
I still need to finish Fire Emblem Engage and then the Xenoblade 3 DLC 3rd update is out. I need to find more time to play games =(

I want to talk about the final boss but I don’t know how to spoiler tag anything. All I can say is that I died during the last phase and it sucked

And fuck fission metroids

[edit] I quite literally cannot get back to refight the final boss because the room before it is another tall room filled with tiny platforms. Only it’s time it‘s filled with fission Metroids that are impossible to dodge and take 10 years to kill. And they infinitely respawn so I can’t just kill all of them and move on. I hate it here. I can’t just ignore them because they cannot miss and keep knocking me down and I have to climb back up again. WTF do I do????
I might be a bit late on this, but power bombs will ice fission metroids. They will simply cease to be

Also keep in mind you're "off the clock" for cutscenes, looking at the map, reading scan logs, and the clock is reset to your previous save point when you die. But it is the shortest of the Prime games... 2 and 3 are maybe like 25% longer.

Got to the Phazon Mines on Hard and met my "favorite" Power Ranger Troopers... Welp, it's going to be a pretty miserable experience for me.
Welp, seems like I overreacted a little bit, cause on the second attempt I got to the grapple beam without dying. It's just that I really dreaded (no pun intended) the moment when I will get to the mines and because of that I panicked on the troopers, losing too much health in the process.

I feel like the only reason the Phazon Mines is hard is that hole that has both the electricity AND the spinning rails. For some reason I couldn't go down there without taking damage, and it does like 200+ damage, but I made it the way back up fine 😭

Is that the cutscene they messed up in the Wii version? That's very surprising they didn't fix that
From the comparison I saw, the Omega Pirate falls on top of Samus, but instead of doing the "power pose" when she comes out of it (like in the GameCube version), she now looks at her suit in awe as she emerges from a crouched position.

The way they redid the "melting Phazon" effect of the Pirate too looks real nice.

I honestly prefer this more to the GameCube, and the animation used from the original does look slightly exaggerated and dated.

Gravity suit acquired, and I used it to obtain an artifact in Chozo Ruins and made my way back to the Sunchamber for another while I was at it. I'm glad super missiles were finally needed for progression lmao, I've had them for a couple hours but never used them outside of combat.

Sunken frigate tomorrow. A phenomenal game continues to get phenomenal-er!

Also I finished my replay Tuesday and I have to say I actually really, really like the Chozo Artifact hunting, to the point where I'm kind of mad at 14 year old me for being lazy and just looking up the locations to finish the game.

Not only do the clues basically spell out where they are, it contextualizes late-game Metroid in a really cool way where it felt like the developers knew how a lot of people played Metroid; grabbing power ups and collectibles towards the end so they could get their item % up. It also lets the game use the power ups in some pretty cool ways, which is a staple of late-game items in Metroid, but its nice that the developers made sure more people would be able to experience that feeling of realizing a late game item works in a far corner of the map.

Honestly I like the new version better.
Confusion on what just happened makes more sense to me than "YEAH I'M THE BEST, CHECK OUT THIS SUPERCOOL NEW EDGY ARMOR I JUST GOT THAT I TOTALLY KNEW EXISTED!!"

Amazon and apparently Best Buy are trash. I saw a few Twitter accounts saying the physical is delayed and for whatever reason the game is getting scalped on ebay.

Don't know if this has been asked before, but if I start a new game on the same save do the Scans carry over?
I missed a few last time like Flaagrahs goddamn Tentacle.

Just wanna know if I'll have to go and scan everything again when I do another run.
Was only missing a few Creatures anyway, have all the Pirate logs, Chozo Lore and Research.
