Pre-Release Pikmin 4 — Pre-release Discussion (UPDATE: "Your First Expedition with Pikmin" trailer, see threadmarks)

The point of introducing new pikmin type is to bring something new to the gameplay. This time we have a new pikmin type and a brand new creature that serve the same purpose, bringing something fresh to the gameplay.
I am not holding my breath for a new type honestly. If the 8 types are in the main campaign maybe they don't want the player to feel too overwhelmed by the possibilities ?

My feeling about the game is that they are aiming at streamlining the pikmin experience : 1 character to control, 1 helpful dog and 8 pikmin types to toy with.
I think that would be a good idea to make the game more accessible if they want to expand the pikmin audience.
This is something that came up a lot when people around me, rather casual or children, tried 3 for instance : they found it too difficult to control. They liked the pikmin, the asethic but couldn't get past the rather complicated controls.

Well, after getting the Target deal, it looks like I am buying this at launch!

Hope I can fit in a playthrough of 1-3 before then.

Really? It's pretty fucking good for a placeholder if it is one, which is uncommon.

Also, it's weird to me they've never done green Pikmin. Wonder if this will be the game.
it's not a placeholder but I suspect it's unfinished. compositionally it looks like it could fit the second type

I think they've already hinted at it too: glow-in-the-dark pikmin, as indicated by the otherwise pretty odd effect on the date in the trailer. the moon or other possible meanings aren't that shade of green; that's specifically glow in the dark imo

That'd be fucking hype. I thought only introducing one Pikmin type was odd, but thought the dog would be their make up for it.

You might be into something.. just like the reveal trailer when they revealed the logo and the 4 made of the pikmin flowers started white and turned yellow... which is the new color of the ice pikmin's flower. Actually I didn't give much thought back then lol

As someone who loves Pikmin 2 this has me pretty hyped. The Ice Pikmin + Doggo have me feeling pretty neutral right now. Not very fond of their designs but the gameplay mechanics seem solid.

The nighttime mode feels like something straight out of the various fan proposals people have made over the years, which is pretty neat.

Nighttime mode/moments
New ice Pikmins, with their gameplay consequences on exploration
The "dog" with its gameplay consequences on traversal and QoL
The new camera angle with larger visual (and more detailed graphics)

not bad

I can't remember the last time I've found myself coming back to a game trailer over and over like this lol......it looks so good 😭

as much as I loved the swirling tie-dye onions in 3 (and I do miss the more rigid unfolding legs of the first two games), I'm loving the new plasticky look too—it looks like this kind of juggling ball:

the lake-freezing & wall-destroying animations are still really jarring to me...the wall breaking in 3 looked so amazing and here it's just a bit of shaking until the whole thing breaks at once, and the ice pikmin just floating in the water until the entire pond suddenly freezes out of nowhere feels especially out-of-place

and there are some small details that have me thinking the overall direction from 3/3DX that I don't love is here to stay, but in all other respects I'm so, so excited—I'm glad to see they're trying so many new things at once, and as someone whose favorite in the series is 2, the return of caves is strictly a plus

I agree with everything you said, except for the captains. I think we'll have at least another one. Multitasking fits Pikmin very well, and they went out of their way to introduce a coop mode in Pikmin 3 DX.

I believe the technical capabilities of the switch over the Wii U will be use on gameplay mechanics and the size of the world.

What about 3/3DX are you nervous to see return? I saw a really great video essay way back about how Pikmin 3 was fundamentally flawed at its core regardless of being an enjoyable game, but I can't remember who it was by or why they felt that way lol.

Im hoping the wall breaking is an early build thing. It breaking gradually is something minor that should easily be added in

An interesting take I saw somewhere (I don't think it was on this forum) was that the 3 other captains stayed behind with the big rocket while the main one and Oatchi entered the tiny one and took off at nightfall. Maybe we have those 3 to control during nighttime?

Anyways, I'm super hyped and I feel that there are many things yet to be shown. (Like compare Metroid Dread's reveal trailer to the second one) Less than 6 months to go!

the biggest thing that currently seems like it's making a return is the "pikmin-as-ammo" action gaminess that they started leaning into with 3 and further in Deluxe (just hold down a button to fire off all your pikmin and watch the number in your cursor tick down, the dodge roll, the general ease of saving them from getting eaten or burning up or whatever) rather than the messy & chaotic group of guys you have flopping around in the first couple games. it's obviously a result of the focus on replaying days to do things optimally (which is not how I've ever played these games personally), and I don't think it's necessarily a flaw, just not what I want out of these games

I'd be curious to see that video if you happen to track it down! I haven't read too much criticism of 3, it seems like it's many people's favorite in the series, but I have some other big issues with it (I wrote about some of them in one of my earlier posts here). it's probably too soon to say, but it maybe seems like 4 will be a bit more open-ended and less focused on rushing to each of the big cutscenes and bosses, which will be an automatic improvement for me.

I said it before but Nintendo apparently not attending E3 is a huge loss for Pikmin 4. (Well not really). But the booth would be cool and also Miyamoto playing the game live on Treehouse (here is hoping that this one will still happen).

they went all out for AC:NH at their last PAX East... here's hoping this year's booth gets similar love for BoTW 2 / Pikmin.

I could see them doing the big link arm statue in front around displays for BoTW 2, and then smaller dioramas for pikmin around..

it is official, but I feel like sometimes this sort of key art crop gets changed

it is official though, sorry to get your hopes up

It's weird not having the Rock Pikmin on the box art as well. So maybe there still could be another type just not featured on the box art. Fingers crossed!

Just FYI, the original box art for Tropical Freeze didn’t have Cranky Kong but they added him to the image when he was revealed to be playable.

Another more recent example is when they revealed the Splatoon 3 game art. It initially had 3 inklings with 2 colours, but after the reveal of Tricolour they changed it to 3 inklings with 3 colours

Edit here's an article about the early art: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/07/heres-your-first-look-at-splatoon-3s-home-menu-icon-for-nintendo-switch

And one for the updated one: https://goombastomp.com/splatoon-3-review/

Couldn't easily insert any images

Another new Pikmin type is certainly not off the table!

Huh, that's weird. The switch icon is the original boxart
That's weird yeah. But also slightly understandable as Tricolour is nowhere near a main mode of the game with its very limited availability.

Also, chances are slim but I'd love to get the full main theme for the game soon, maybe via a tweet or something. It's so pretty!

Man the more I watch the trailer, that really was one of the best in the entire Switch era.

I love how they gave us SO MUCH TO LOOK AT but also didn't give away how everything would work. They gave us so much new while still leaving enough for us to speculate.

I'm pretty sure the trailer mainly showed just one area (with the park bench and wagon wheel). Then there's also the park area with the elephant slide, cherry blossoms and stream (and the house on the box art). There's also a few shots of caves, but that's it. I appreciate not being spoiled too much.

pikmin 4 is 12GB

It is twice as much as 3dx. Honestly surprised by the file size, Nintendo internally developed games tend to be rather small, save for botw. For instance odyssey is 6go, AC is 11go but that is with all the free updates+expansion. Really wonder what is the reason for the files size here

Also I rewatched the trailer and don't know if it was brought up already but the battle against that spider skeleton thing takes place inside a building, you can see a window at some point. Maybe a garage or something?

So, a treehouse presentation? I hope so, because I dont think a direct suits Pikmin

(they did something like that for Pikmin 3 right? But Japan only)
the pikmin 3 direct was miyamoto and a famous comedian playing the game together and making jokes. not even kidding

yes, it was Miyamoto and Hitoshi Matsumoto. I agree that Treehouse style presentation is better for it but I don't want Treehouse members to play it. I want Miyamoto and maybe other team members. Not really counting on it though since they haven't done this with Splatoon 3 for example, it was just NOA members. This is the reality what we've got when there is no E3. If Nintendo was attending E3 the Treehouse would be full of Pikmin 4 with Miyamoto and co.

I am glad that Pikmin 4 delivered what Splatoon 3 did not last year when it swapped date with Xenoblade 3. And that is being the perfect summer title, literally the perfect date.
Fun fact: Pikmin 4 release date is the same as the Splatoon 2 was almost 6 years ago.

Each time I watch the trailer, I get more and more hyped. Y'know, I'm a huge Pikmin fan so I was expecting myself to get crazy with Pikmin 4 reveal and gameplay. I got spoiled about Pikmin 4 reveal last time and... Well, I think I expected so much the game to be showcased in the last direct that I was stun and almost not appreciated it as its true value. Now that some days have passed and that I watched it like 20 times, I can say that I just can't wait anymore. I would freeze myself to July 21st if I could make it alive. The game looks so cool 😭

I still can’t believe this game is real. After all of this time. And it looks great! So happy at the variety of Pikmin types. Also I didn’t see a timer?? Are they going the Pikmin 2 route??

Out of all the “mysteriously absent but confirmed” games we have been tracking for the past 5-6 years or so (Bayo 3, TotK, Pikmin 4), the only one left is Metroid Prime 4! We have almost come full circle!

To bless your day

Oh, man. I remember that day quite well. That E3 was the last before I started highschool, and to see Miyamoto and the Pikmin around him in its lodge was a shock, really. At that time I had completely lost any hope for Pikmin to comeback lmao, so it was one of the most incredible moment in my entire life ahah

I do wonder if pointer/gyro controls are gone now. It'd make sense given the camera angle is now so much lower but I'd hope they have a good workaround if so.

It is also interesting that some shots in the trailer do indicate that the camera might be at a more traditional angle as well.

I think it looks nice but I'm just not feeling super excited for it. Like so far it's... another Pikmin game, with the same type of gameplay in another same-y looking location. I figured Pikmin was ripe to go the open world route -- how cool would it be to have a big seamless open world with all these different puzzles and progression instead of 4-5 smaller disconnected 'worlds'.

As it is, it looks like more Pikmin, which is fine because this is a great series and it's been a while, but at game #4 I kind of expect there to start being more of a hook or an innovation or a reason to get really excited. I don't think I'd be excited at all for a Pikmin 5 that's again more of the same but with another new Pikmin type.

I doubt they are gone. Many people are uncomfortable with Pikmin's traditional control scheme. They are like gyro aiming.

We don't know if the world is disconnected, unless I missed something. The last trailer also teased a night gameplay. Plus, we have the return of the caves (which admittedly leave me a bit cold, but that's a gameplay element we haven't seen in 20 years).

Humans also seem to still live in Pikmin 4.

I think that's selling what we've seen of Pikmin 4 short. Like you can seemingly explore the planet at night and caverns are back. Add in Oatchi helping with traversal. I think there will be a lot more to explore in this game.
