If 2023 is going to be a light year, then either:

a.) there wouldn't be a Direct in February

or

b.) the February Direct is going to be extremely underwhelming
or

c.) the February Direct will rock because of Silksong and Zelda and then every other 2023 Direct is gonna be extremely underwhelming

This but genuinely, while I thought a Q1 Mini containing the necessities followed by a June Direct with the rest of 2023 made sense, I guess Nintendo's probably just gonna blow the lid off everything they've got for 2023, giving us a banger Direct, with the asterisk that it'll be the only one until September, and the only one with major reveals for 2023 (and we probably won't get anymore reveals outside of the odd Ring Fit or Big Brain-esque title

Okay what the heck?? Either the return of Game Vouchers is happening outside of the Direct, or my theory rains supreme and we get a Mini tomorrow morning

The thing is, we all kind of feel like we're due for some kind of Mario, so it is something. Mario I guess refers to both 2D and 3D, so that's certainly a curveball, and Donkey Kong, another series we expect to see soon, is in a very odd state. Donkey Kong is a big IP, it historically sells a lot, but it has had a hard time maintaining relevancy, so it's hard to determine if it should be considered unreasonable to expect it for Switch.

There hasn't been a new game in almost 10 years, so it would feel like a revival, but considering the attention his series is getting in the movie, and the fact that he's next in line after Mario for GETTING A THEME PARK, it feels like Nintendo wants him to be up there with the big dogs, but there's yet to be proof where it really counts, the games.

But yeah rumour is pretty telling
I‘d be disappointed if both 2D and 3D Mario are a case of „yeah they’re too popular. Let’s wait until Switch 2“

I still believe in the possibility that there's some holiday blowout that nobody knows about. Remember all the dooming about 2020's H2 release schedule before all of a sudden Age of Calamari was revealed with no leaks or hints ahead of time?

I'm actually kinda excited about all this "Nintendo has a light year past TotK" talk because.. it could just mean that nobody knows what Nintendo has coming.

Now we reached the point of the story where all the leaks that we've been seeing and expecting to be in a Direct are actually announced outside of a Direct and the Direct ends up not happening and we're all left in PAIN. :p

That's my thought too. At the beginning of single year on every single gaming forum there's always a "Nintendo has a drought" topic because of the only games that have a release dates so far. Then the first direct comes and gives us a few good games to look forward to.

Sounds like every direct cycle that I have ever been a part of.

Where in the news is it mentioned that these games could still exist? Donkey Kong, Metroid, etc.

Under the right circumstances series like DK and Tomodachi can do 5 million plus and I think Nintendo would treat both as major releases. DK is a historic IP and Tomodachi hit 6 million on 3DS; in a post New Horizons world, Nintendo may well view it as having potential. They're both possible this year, but I'm also not sure either is ready yet.

I'm still leaning towards 2D Mario being Nintendo's other tentpole release after Zelda, and I've thought for a while that NdCube could have something this year. The issue with NdCube is I don't think the next Mario Party will come just yet, and so maybe they do a solid budget release rather than a year-end title. But I think they'd potentially be the developer for a multiplayer focused Animal Crossing spin-off, and that kind of game could well be a big hit.

Or maybe Nintendo go a little heavy on Mario to try and capitalise on the Mario movie, we get 2D and Party, but they save the next 3D game as the launch title for new hardware.

There's 0 confirmation that these games exist, but the primary motivators in this discussion have been people claiming that Nintendo has no heavy hitters post TotK in 2023, and then clarifying that by heavy hitters they're ONLY referring to franchises that have sold over 10 million copies. Which is a very narrow list that suddenly makes this "scoop" a lot less valuable given most people were not expecting any of those franchises anyway and it clearly isn't accounting for a franchise to suddenly break the 10 million mark either with a new release.

Sounds like every direct cycle that I have ever been a part of.

We'll get our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer when someone steals a copy from the backroom of a Wal-Mart, records some footage and slaps together a quick trailer in Windows Movie Maker for us. :p

Andy Robinson's claim is that a light back half necessitates Nintendo skipping E3, so make of that what you will.

I think what really has me intrigued is that we're kinda done with the games we've been waiting years for! Prime 4 is the only outlier, and none of us really expect that for 2023 anyway. Basically, after ToTK, with the exception of Pikmin 4, everything's a total mystery, anyone's batshit crazy predictions can come true!

I think that Dring, Robinson etc just think that Nintendo won't have any major release in 2023 after Totk, intending no multi million/big know IP like Mario, DK, Pokémon et., but we have to consider two things:

-this doesn't prevent the release of some niche but core experience like MPHD, Pikmin, maybe other dormant IP that will please N audience.

-They might just not know the whole plan? we already saw in the past games that was very little rumored and then announced for a FY release, so who knows if this might be the case.

IMO the concept of Nintendo winding down Switch support for a speculated Switch 2 early '24 release is reasonable, but we have to consider that in the next (roughly) 12 months the Mario Movie will debut, and the DK attraction in SM theme park will open. A game to tie in with one of these event is not a given, but it would be reasonable.

Feels like this year we may be light on heavy hitting new content. Maybe some decent DLC, already announced titles with release dates (TotK), some side-titles (Mario Sluggers-esque), random third party games that can be handled by the Switch, etc. It's more than likely either this year or next year that the Switch successor could very likely be announced and released. Nintendo will probably hold some of the big reveals or showing off big titles for the successor to replace the Switch. Either as an "Only on the Switch successor" or a cross-gen title of some kind.

I bet there's like four undated games left for the year:
  • One for late-June/early-July
  • One for September
  • One for October
  • One for November

Any date(s) we’re comfortably banking on?
It's definitely next week, Jeff said so
  • The 8th since that's the Wednesday and the February shows are always Wednesdays
  • The 9th since Jeff said it's probably "later in the week" and Nate may have posted a funny hint on Twitter

I doubt the Vouchers return is related to the Direct, as the leaked video didn't feature a single unannounced game.
I think they'll probably still mention them if there's already an NSO segment in the Direct. It was never going to be a "they're back!" announcement in the Direct, because they never went away except in NA. But now that they're available in all regions again they're free to plug them in a Direct without worrying about region specificity.

i am sure we get 2d mario as its big but its not "Major" as that is usually for releases that will be ground breaking and TOTK is gonna be the last one for the switch

Makes me sad when people are like, "The second half of '23 could be sick! You've got: Metroid Prime Remaster! F-Zero Remaster! Pokemon DLC! Advance Wars Remaster! GBA games!" Might as well be nothing to me.
Add Xeno 3 and Fire Emblem story DLC to that and you have one of the best 2nd half’s IMO

Age of Calamari

there's been a number of folks over the last few pages saying that the conversation in here is pointless/inconsequential/boring and uh I hate to break it to y'all but... yes hello welcome to the speculation thread? we are crazy folks who will never be satisfied in the hunt for more, nor will we accept no for an answer when we can instead hope hype and believe

Wii Rainbow Road and Tour Vancouver Velocity are coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe this year why are y'all complaining
Because Wii Rainbow Road is trash, even without the comparison to the infinitely better Double Dash Rainbow Road

Stoked for Vancouver Velocity tho

2023 is going to look more like 2020 and 2021 than 2022, as far as I see it. Spin offs, DLCs, re-releases and a couple of big releases.

So none of those are bad tracks?

MODSSSSSS
You fall off the ledge after that figure 8 and hit the boost after Lakitu drops you off to slam directly into the guardrail and rebound into the abyss three consecutive times like a mocking Groundhog Day.

Then call the mods if I'm wrong. Absolute trash design.

Oh very nice I missed that so thanks. Did Grubb say that on his show or on twitter?

What if... journalists and insiders know that the Direct is not going to be a general Direct? That may be one explanation for the "light year" thing.

Another explanation could be (some people might get nervous with this) that a bunch of AA games and remasters don't make it a strong year. If TotK is the only AAA game, while the rest are just smaller and shorter AA games, I could understand that many people might think that this year is less interesting.

In my opinion. this is the most important Direct in years, not only for the games, but for people who like to speculate about Nintendo's movements.
Is Switch 2 coming soon? Is Switch going to be "alive" for the next years? Imagine if they announce several big games coming in 2024, or imagine if they only show smaller games and just for this year...
This Direct can reveal a lot of things, and it's very exciting lol

You're wrong, so MODSSSSSS

Since we're doing this, let me share my definition of a heavy hitter:
Any new, full-priced game developed by an internal Nintendo team.

Not a heavy-hitter:
Any remake, remaster, refurb, reheat, re-whatever, and DLC for existing games (unless large enough to be a self-contained release, XC2-style).

Makes me sad when people are like, "The second half of '23 could be sick! You've got: Metroid Prime Remaster! F-Zero Remaster! Pokemon DLC! Advance Wars Remaster! GBA games!" Might as well be nothing to me.

But hey, I know that Zelda is coming soon, followed at some point by Pikmin 4 and Metroid Prime 4, so it's all good. Those might be my three very favourite game franchises in the world. Doesn't get any bigger. They'll release when ready. It's fine.
I mean, that happens sometimes. 2022 was regarded as a pretty great year, I think. I got both Pokemon games, Kirby...and that was pretty much it from Nintendo for me. Switch Sports? Three Hopes? Mario Strikers? Xenoblade? Splatoon? Bayonetta? Those were all major releases...and none of them really appealed to me.

Nintendo generally appeals to as wide of an audience as they can, but sometimes it's not for you.

My expectations for this Direct are that Nintendo shows everything coming this year other than some DLCs, some NSO stuff, some f2p stuff, and Pokemon stuff.

Jokes on you! 2021 was my personal favourite year of the Switch! Really hoping next week brings the goods
Ha, I'm not making any comment on the quality of the year. I get that, depending on tastes, that could mean great things for people.

Personally I hope it means we get to see NdCube do something outside of their usual Mario Party; that EPD 4 put out something wacky and fun; and that when they reach into the Schedule Filler Drawer, Nintendo accidentally grab a localisation of Buddy Mission BOND and the GB and GBA NSO apps.
