I just can't imagine Nintendo is going to go in such a wildly different direction with their next gaming device that it won't be bc with Switch games. Literally >90% of their annual revenue is tied up in the Switch, I expect the successor to be super conservative in form factor and marketing.
I agree and I do think that's what will happen, but keeping the Switch alive for the next 5-6 years could be a solution for the "fear" they have of releasing a completely different system.

The hardware discussion thread is really funny in an insane way. 38k posts and over 3 million views, that thread is probably repsponsible for half the engagement on this site to be honest and I haven't read one post in it.

I'm not really sure how much material there even is to discuss to reach 38k posts in a little over a year, but hardware discussion when a hardware announcement is close has always been insane in all the good and bad ways.

It’s a lot of circular discussion with the same handful of people & a couple new ones every now & then.

How many pages will this thread get when Direct is finally announced? $5 US eShop giftcard giveaway.

Let's have a little fun. Let's try to guess how many pages will this thread get when Nintendo Direct is finally announced (the moment the thread will close to be precise, so no new posts will be there).

This is something that every one of us can effect and it's not as boring as "Team January/Feb."

What are the rules?

You have to quote this post (so I can find you guess easily) and type the exact number you think the final thread page count will be.
You can send your guess until Monday, January 16th 3pm UTC. So that the final number cannot be guessed so easily (if we will get the last week January Direct).

The person who will quess the exact number or the nearest one will get the giftcard. If more people guess the exact number (it could happen lol) than one of these will be selected by random selection.

And you can edit your number until the end date. - January 16th 3pm UTC.

Honestly I think people forget this when they talk about Nintendo winding down Switch support or about Nintendo deliberately waiting too long to launch a new system. It's a tough balancing act between launching the new system with enough software to make it a worthwhile proposition for customers, while also keeping the Switch itself selling enough hardware and software to (at least initially) still provide the bulk of the company's revenue.

This is why it doesn't make sense for Nintendo to either withhold a successor system for a lengthy time, and it's also why Nintendo will want to push cross-gen software and a backwards-compatible successor. Sure, there'll be exclusives (maybe 3D Mario - perhaps Monolith Soft's action game?), but there's going to be Switch software from Nintendo themselves for several more years. GC, Wii and 3DS remasters would provide easy cross-gen pickings, as would remaining Wii U ports; but I expect we'll still see Switch getting original software so long as that is feasible.

The reorganisation back in 2015 was for exactly this scenario, and so the next few years are the real test for EPD and Nintendo's hybrid model.

But it also allows companies to generate money to invest in new games.

With that said, you look at the negatives of remakes/remaster but don't seem to account for the positives. Link's Awakening allowed people who never experienced the previous game to experience a version of it. It allows new gamers or older gamers to play games they missed. One could say "just throw the old game up as an emulation," but there's a very real lack of desire from gamers who didn't experience an old game pre HD era to play that game as it was. They want the fresh coat of paint.

There are other remakes/remaster that have served a good purpose. Look at the Resident Evil remakes, Crash N-Sane Trilogy(which paved the way for Crash 4 and revitalized the franchise), Shadow of the Colossus(god bless BluePoint), Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2, Metroid Samus Returns, etc etc. Also, you pointed to Pokemon BDSP and LGPE and my rebuttal to that is that there has been a Pokemon remake that excelled and that was HGSS, which might just be the best Pokemon games ever lol.

We're constantly being fed games, as this past year proved, and we have such a busy year this year that it's pretty obvious the industry is big enough to have remakes/remasters and new games. The gaming industry is nothing like Hollywood lol. Hollywood struggles with big budget new ideas(indie films continue to thrive), the gaming industry doesn't for the most part.
I can see how it allows them to generate money to invest in new games, however this is only reasonable up to a point, when a lot of the output we're getting is reused (of some kind) it does make you sort of question, especially past a certain point. For example just like how we all know providing a better service for customers increases demand which increases revenue and therefore profit... on paper, but it doesn't quite always play out that way.

I think it's debatable whether consumers would turn their nose up at the original games and it's clear there's a market for all graphical capabilities - the repopularization of the pixel art aesthetic and also low poly aesthetic supports this, see DUSK, ULTRAKILL, Frogun, Minecraft and other "Low poly games". But I mostly play games from all eras as well as indies and fangames and don't just stick to the new stuff so I suspect I won't see eye to eye on this with the average consumer. Worth mentioning you can force 1080p for most games even PSX, N64, Saturn and turn off dithering and other hardware compromises that were originally in place (although I don't like higher resolutions for these games some do). But all of this comes down to personal taste.

In my original post I tried to make it clear that remakes aren't inherently bad, but my issue is mainly the over reliance (I understand this is a value judgement) on remakes/remasters as well them frequently being of dubious quality. I haven't played a few of the ones you've mentioned, so good to hear they pleased you. Shadow of the Colossus was a decent remake and Pokemon HGSS is indeed an example of a remake done well where it builds upon all of what was originally there and then adds more. Fwiw I like FF7R too since it is basically a new game in a lot of ways. But still, for myself I feel the industry relies on them far far too much.

re: the hollywood stuff I mistyped and was referring to AAAs.

Not trying to push a doom and gloom narrative either, because I'm actually enjoying games more than ever since there's so many smaller scale games to enjoy, indies, fangames, games from the past 50 years. I have enough good games to play to last a lifetime. But I can't help but feel dissapointed at when we could have more new ideas. I suppose it is greed but as a consumer I want the best deal possible for us all!

This is just something I've observed.

I know there are too many rumors because of some gamers' eagerness to get new information about Zelda TOTK, but let's be honest, in January we won't have any kind of event from Nintendo, Fire Emblem is an IP with a growing success and releasing something from Metroid or Zelda during these weeks would be completely overshadowing it.
In February we have games like Octopath 2 and Kirby that although they are important for a small sector, they can be eclipsed without problem by a Nintendo Direct, since one is a Port and the other is a Square Enix game which does not give much profit to Nintendo, on the other hand, we have seen how Kirby's marketing is already starting in their networks and surely Octopath 2 will have its exclusive previews in Nintendo events, so most likely there will be a Direct before February 24, but not in January.
Relax and enjoy Fire Emblem, it's a great franchise that I just started playing and I'm looking forward to keep discovering it.

The thing is, a new Nintendo Direct could easily feature Fire Emblem and also, people who are getting the game are getting it with or without a direct. Having a direct, that shows off Zelda isn't going to take away the sales of Fire Emblem.

Will it be after the game releases? Very likely, but is a direct not going to happen before next Friday because of the game? Not necessarily.

Here are my predictions for the next direct

Show off:
Zelda
Pikmin
Kirby
Bayonetta Origins
New NSO Games
Hogwarts Legacy (it's surprisingly getting a switch version)
Next wave of Mario Kart tracks

Reveal:
Final Fantasy Tactics remaster
Skies of Arcadia remaster
Lord of the rings Battle for Middle Earth 1&2 double pack
Metroid Prime remaster
A new Resident Evil remaster/port/new game for Switch
New Donkey King (show opener)
Ring Fit Adventures 2

"Yeah" this message if you miss exciting Nintendo news and think it's time to finally see Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lol.
I definitely miss exciting Nintendo news (nintenews? newstendo?) but I've personally seen plenty of TotK. As soon as I saw Ganondorf was back I yelped and decided to buy, no questions asked. Then the second trailer with Link falling through the clouds and running on the sky islands with the golden trees and the sunset on the horizon, ugh. Day one. Day fuckin one. No more marketing required for me. LOL

Did you mean Shadow of Morder/Shadow of War double pack? Battle for Middle Earth was a very old PC RTS, never released on any console. Pretty detailed game, might not be best fit for Switch.

Nah I just wanted to will it into existence. I never played the first one, but I loved Battle for Middle Earth 2 on 360 back in the day & just threw it in there as a total wild card pick. ;)

If it's any consolation to all of you, remember Fire Emblem comes out soon! I was telling my wife I would not be making plans this Friday because I'll be playing Fire Emblem. Then I realized it was still another week away :(

(I still won't be making plans)

Is it too early to ask about your plans for Zelda TotK? You'll need at least a week off. A weekend and one day is too short for this masterpiece!!!!

On another note, how many people have taken the 12th of May off already? Or is it too early? We can be each other's alibi 😜😂

Could someone imagine if Nintendo releases Mario kart 9 this year !!!! What will be the impact?
Exclusive to new HW? Its the perfect game for late october spot, thats usually a family friendly game from a core IP. Except in 2020 for Pikmin 3 (and was originally SMW3D DX spot) its usually destiny for a Mario IP title (2017: SMO, 2019: LM3, 2021: SMP), well in 2022 they put Bayonetta 3 but it was also near IP’s anniversary.

I think both MK titles can coexist as long as MK9 offers something completely different than MK8 and uses new HW capabilities like idk, a full open world game.

I just hope the next direct will feature Fae Farm release date
That games feels too much like a clone of AC and SoS, just like Dauntless was a clone of Monster Hunter. Personally I want a My Time at Sandrock. Another farming game but with so much more. This is the one with most customization going on.

Wake up Fami new Nate just dropped

I think Persona 6 being multiplat makes whole lot of sense after they released 3, 4 and 5 on everything.
I think it's gonna come to Xbox One, Series(Gamepass ofc), PS4, PS5, Switch and PC. What definitely isn't happening is PS5 exclusivity because PS5 is basically a non-entity in Japan, so at least there it will have at the very least a PS4 version, maybe a Switch version too.
I think that instead of a DLC, we are going to get Ultra Scarlet and Ultra Violet in November.
I also think that a new SMT will be announced, a sequel to V, like Apokalypse was a sequel to 4.

I don't expect any new announcements for H1 in this direct, but I hope that at least MP or F-Zero remasters are announced.
THIS, I'VE BEEN PREDICTING IT SINCE FOREVER. Makes too much sense. They didn't make that huge ass world and all those demon assets to not use them again.
I think V-2 or V: Subtitle is a matter of when. 2024 is my guess.
Talking about SMT there was a rumor about SMT 4 coming to xbox or have i imagine it?

Because that will be probably on Switch too
Wait, there was??? Can somebody link it please.
I would totally LOVE if SMT IV came to modern platforms, mainly if it's cheap like P4G and P3P on Switch. I would buy it day one. Couldn't finish it on the 3DS emulator, hope some adjustments would be made to make its map system easier to understand.
Yes, I expect both IV and Apocalypse to be remastered and released for all systems.
That would be the dream!!! I mean the game looks great already. Due to the battles being stylized 2D it just needs an upres and call it a day. Some reworking on textures of the 3D exploration sections and characters would be needed, but wouldn't need any big effort to make it look good.

Agree with pretty much everything here. I don't think DK will be there tho and I think Resident Evil will be an original one like Monster Hunter Rise. Ring Fit Adventure would make for the huge announcement of the show like Splatoon 3 February 2021. Thank God the terf game definitely won't be there tho, Sony has a marketing agreement so neither Xbox nor Nintendo can show it - our Direct is safe from its contamination 🙏

If SMT V-2 is 2023-2024 then we won't hear about Etrian Odyssey before 2024-2025 😔 SMTV shares a loooot of key developers from the Etrian Odyssey series

Some sacrifices have to be made, sadly. But maybe they can work on both or V-2 won't have the whole team on it?

Nintendo will surprise us all with games like:

Lego - Mario
Super Mario Touchdown
Xenoblade Warriors
Battalion Wars 3
Star Tropics: Raider of the universe
Ice Climber Climate Crisis: Save the icebears
Disaster: Two days of crisis
Golden Sun Trilogy
Nier 3 exklusive

...im tired. I daydream already and should go to bed. Good night everyone :)
