After dying for 45 minutes to the first boss of Dread I discovered that the green toxic good he vomits gives me armor and missiles if shot. I felt very stupid.

Arlo with his take on the NSO controversies

I like Arlo a lot, and usually agree with him, but I’m not sure what all the outrage is about here. He complains about the button mapping, which I mean, sure, we should be able to remap buttons. I don’t personally mind the A and B thing, or the ZL and R thing that he complains about, but I’m sure that’s a personal thing. Then he goes on to talk about the input lag, which he says he doesn’t really notice. He closes by saying that basically Nintendo needs to justify the cost increase by giving us every N64 game right now. Which is obviously insane. It’s clear that some games have more issues than others, like OoT, and there’s no doubt titles in the catalogue that need some work before they’re ready for the service.

I’m a little disappointed with Arlo for how he’s handling the NSO thing. It seems like he didn’t like the price increase and since then has been determined to dislike everything about the service.

So, any fun predictions for N’s six months earnings report?
Hopefully Metroid selling Super well, maybe selling as much as a Fusion of all the past Metroid game copies put together. I have Zero regrets buying the latest game, and now find it my Mission to wait for the next installment. Now I Dread for the thought of an even longer release wait time for Samus’ Return in Metroid 6.

That's a problem 'cause I'm dummy dummy
You definitely will get better at it. I'm not a Metroid/Metroidvania guy and the first boss was hard for me. But by the last boss, I was doing my thing, reading moves, and thinking outside the boss. Don't give up! Challenge again!

I remember him mentioning something about Halo, yeah. Maybe it got scrapped?

I also remember that rumor about MS and Nintendo working together for something this fall, but I assume that was Banjo for NSO, which might have been pushed back?
Like Nate said, I guess Halo's status is just up in the air. Who knows what's come of it.

What ShpeshalNick said though about Nintendo and MS collaborating in the fall is probably Banjo and Perfect Dark on NSO, I guess. I would have hoped it was something with a little more fanfare, but I guess it's still nice knowing we're getting a few Rareware games

Not to mention there already is system level button remapping...

Which I feel like people tend to forget.

Metroid released in Q3 so it won't be in the earnings report, though they do sometimes give tidbits about games that released in the following quarter in the slides.

But there's no guarantee they mention Metroid or the OLED model.

Can’t stand this muppet.

I posted the video in the NSO thread but Nintendo World Report has the best breakdown of this I’ve seen so far. They talk about both the good and the bad of the service. Ocarina of Time has been a sticking point for Nintendo’s emulators since the Wii. It’s the game that has the most issues now but it doesn’t suffer from anything that is game breaking.

The other game they’ve had a hell of time emulating is Star Fox. The NWR video points out that Star Fox 64 is running damn near flawlessly on NSO and they’ve fixed a ton of emulation bugs that were on the Wii and WiiU versions. So clearly Nintendo is putting some effort into making sure these games are accurate. But of course nobody is talking about how great Star Fox 64 is because water textures in one room will get you more outrage clicks.

I wish the current system was a bit more convenient and better incorporated. It should be possible to have it on a per-game basis and also change the button prompts. Hopefully it's done better in the successor system.

One of the first replies to that tweet:

“The console wars have always been gay.”

I’m thinking, in what way are console wars gay? Is buying a specific console some kind of pride thing now?

But no. They used the term as a derogatory. It’s legit been so long since I’ve seen gay used as a slur that it confused me seeing that reply.

As much as I personally don’t care for arlo, sometimes when it comes to nintendo tubers or youtubers in general I do have to throw up my hands and just accept “this is how the sausage gets made” . I think some of the nso stuff is definitively overblown even if there are genuine issues to be found, but you probably aren’t doing yourself favors being the optimistic or evenhanded youtuber right now over this .

My personal pet peeve over all of this other than the usual insane “this is how you make this right, nintendo” demands that go beyond simply fixing it, is again how much people right now are purposely dismissing that the price increase wasn’t just for n64 and it’s something you should have factored in before buying it if you did buy the expansion pack. Ultimately Nintendo should fix the issues had with the n64 emulator in games like oot, etc. But it’s absurd if one wants like a public apology and them to announce ambassador program 2 or something lol.

I seem to have a problem taking seriously the opinions of a talking puppet, regardless of how helpful or insightful said opinions might be.

That is to say: on the spectrum of expected opinions to completely shocking stances, anything that channel creates has no effect because the schtick is... a talking puppet for engagement. I'll never quite get used to it.

Yeah it could absolutely be better improved but it is there for those who just need it.
I don't use it cause I find it inconvenient without per-game profiles
I thought it had individual profiles, but yeah it would be nice to have each profile automatically tied to a specific game you start.

Excited for the Journey‘s End version of Terraria on Switch. Seems like it‘s progressing well. Hopefully we will see optional keyboard/mouse support, which is planned. Would be one of the few Switch games that officially support this control scheme for the whole game.

And as GoldenEye 007 is (finally) not on the German index any more (by request 👀), German media finally don‘t have to write code words for the title any more.

Personally I think Nintendo's rigid approach to button mapping is a problem, especially when we're talking about the emulation apps, but also when we're thinking about accessibility. People should have more options to make gaming comfortable for themselves and Nintendo aren't always the best at that.

That being said, yes, the suggestion that Nintendo need to upload the entire N64 catalogue is a ridiculous solution given the quality of emulation clearly differs on a game by game basis and, as is being said, some games are clearly improved versus previous offerings. That improvement will only happen with time and effort. I did a run through Star Fox 64 and it was fantastic. It's frustrating that these issues are present, especially in an iconic game like Ocarina, but a ROM dump won't fix anything. It's such a ludicrous 'solution' that I can't help but suspect this is another video playing to the outrage crowd knowing that's the best way to gain traction.

I mean really , if the issue is the n64 emulator is bad , why in any context would you or nintendo want to release a ton more games right now for folks to find more fault with versus more extensively looking for issues in upcoming games ? it just sounds like taking a moment of outrage to break out your demands list again .

So I paid a guy on eBay to give me a bunch of like rare event Pokemon and whatnot... annnd well... dayum.

Only for Sword/Shield though! Volt Tackle Pichu is cute tho!!

Also I do not think these are hacked or anything. I recall some of these event Pokemon.

Yeah, my issue is that I find dealing with sub-optimal mappings more convenient than going to the settings every time I play a different game lol

Especially if I mess with A/B, since it applies to the OS too

Lol I just recently bought a Soulsilver copy from someone who performs a "glitch" (it's not really a glitch but apparently a specific trainer ID you need to get that effects some sort of algorithm in the game) that makes shinies appear like 20% of the time haha. He made sure my starter was shiny too!

Haven't actually started my playthrough yet since I'm still going through Platinum.

The demand to release all the roms at once is ridiculous and shows a clear lack of detachment and understanding of the issue in the first place. The only way you could come to that conclusion is if you have a surface level understanding of how emulation works (and an even weaker understanding of n64 emulation and the historical issues it’s had).

It sucks that a large part of gaming discourse comes from people with zero development experience and simply think “give more content please!!!” as the solution to problems.

Can you imagine if Dread had issues and instead of saying “I hope Nintendo can fix the problems with this game” you made a YouTube video demanding the immediate release of Metroid Prime 4.

Chad NERD optimizing their emulator around Star Fox 64 in order to please the highly cultured SF fanbase.

Oh, neat. I was gonna buy Heartgold/Soulsilver but think with just the game cart it's under 20 or so. if it's CIB it's a looot more.

It’s just funny to me cause it’s not like youtubers like this don’t also make “my wishlists/ this is what nintendo needs to do to keep me on board” videos already. If you want them to release NSO titles quicker that’s a whole other issue to be brought up . Same if one wants more systems on NSO or other matters .

the PlayStation PC logo is infuriating because the P in PC is like the PlayStation P but scrunched in several dimensions that don’t make sense to me whatsoever. high stalked fuckin’ nightmare y’all

What is everyone doing for their November releases? Pokemon, SMTV, and Animal Crossing DLC for me. I'm thinking my first playthrough of SMTV is going to be the easier difficulty so I can familiarize myself with the systems and get through the story before my real playthrough. Pokemon will probably be pushed to December for me since I've got nothing else that month.
