I'd bet money it's a new character not tied to any existing ones
best case scenario. I love all the characters and their design (besides Louie) but I really wanna see some new faces. Not gonna lie... I would love a character creation.

ew I am strongly opposed to that

Pikmin characters are phenomenal and I'd like to get some new ones
Doesn't have to be too deep for me . Splatoon's take on it would be absolutely acceptable to me. But I understand your point.

Still I would really love to give my captain a few personal touches.

I really hope they go even further with upgrades then in Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Felt really satisfying finding some upgrades in the levels. A double whammy of character and unit progression really hit the spot for me in 3.

I wouldn't mind some customization as long as the integrity of the original characters isn't touched too much. The camera is close enough to the ground that you could give them slightly different clothes, badges or other kinds of accessories. But I think you could easily have avatars in multiplayer modes.

new fear unlocked: the character in the screenshot is just an avatar

throw that on the pile with open world, death of the timer, and playing at night
I would love to have an interconnected world with bigger levels but open world surely goes too far for me too. I love the level design structure in Pikmin and it is its strongest point right now besides the satisfying gameplay.

IF they theoretically go open world or bigger and interconnected with the new game I guess they would design certain missions and regions around a temporary time limit. Like for example a rainy level that floods the level more and more the longer you take.

There are tons of possibilities how they could design the limit more organically instead of a hard time limit.

But generally speaking I am with you. Pikmin 3's level and time structure is perfect. I love to improve my routes and time. Improving and altering your strategy is quintessential Pikmin and I hope it doesn't get lost.

Character creation in Pikmin? Ew, no

I want to see what charming characters Nintendo comes up with, leave it to the professionals.
Guess my take is really controversial lol.

They could just create a base character thats just as charming as ever. Works pretty well for Splatoon.

Nintendo Land isn't related to Wii Sports but it's in the same timeline as Tomodachi Life where all Miis are little freaks.

but the player in splatoon isn't really a character
Speaking of the Agents not being characters: I love how they handled this with humor in Splatoon 3's story mode and Old Agent 3's appearances. The self awareness was pretty funny.

I personally think it would be really cool if Pikmin 4 has a female protagonist as the singular playable character.
Agreed. Its also cool to see how a female
Inkling is the face of Splatoon.

I know it's a minor detail, but the clock that appears on the trailer is not properly working... Did anyone notice that?

One day, around 23 years ago, Miyamoto was relaxing on his patio and saw a line of ants marching past his feet and off into the grass, carrying leaves towards their nest. Then he imagined for a moment – because this is how the Miyamoto mind works – what the scene might look like if they were tiny people.
"Ants, as you know, always have a leader, and tend to be carrying things, and as they move they create a kind of rail," he says. "And I started thinking about a game about lots of small people carrying things in a line, following a leader, with everyone going in the same direction."

Miyamoto is really one of the few people in the industry I would consider a creative genius.

I really wonder what type of Pikmin they are introducing to take advantage of the new camera angle. The game has also more potential for verticality with 3rd person. Can't wait.

While the puzzles and strategies and such with the multiple characters is great, I partly really want you to be all alone again in Pikmin
Pikmin 1 has a very unique sense of dread, I think, Olimar being alone, missing his family, will die if he does not complete his mission in time, having to take help from the Pikmin
It is just a very cool unique sense of lonliness, in the first game, that the other (still amazing) Pikmin games did not have.
I doubt we will have just 1 character again, but I WOULD welcome it

I kinda agree. I wouldn't be pissed at all
even tho 3 is my favorite game in the series.

Yays thank you
Luckily, I am fine with both options since they are good in very different ways. I just in general like being alone in games
and in real life
Also, about exploring at night, I have had this idea that a game would introduce Green glow-in-the-Dark Pikmin, and use that as a excuse to why you can now play at night. Since they help you and teh other Pikmin see better.

A need to light fires or positioning certain Pikmin at certain places would really add a welcome sense of tension to exploration.

I think a segment where you play at night, with some really, truly eerie/alien enemies roaming around and an amped up sense of dread, could be an amazing setpiece and subversion of expectations

The atmosphere comes together so well in Pikmin 1. In that regard I don't think Pikmin 2 gets enough credit for pulling off the tone shift from the first game.

Reading this thread thinking I really should get Pikmin 3 DX on Switch. Played the original version on Wii U in early 2014 and loved it.
