it was arguably a holdover because we only got thirty seconds of half of the first party games

September 2017 Direct - No new major first party announcements. Mario Odyssey coming out the following month was the big closer.
September 2018 Direct - 40 seconds of Luigi's Mansion 3. Animal Crossing announced in a Smash trailer. No footage at all.
September 2019 Direct - The new game announcement was Xenoblade Definitive Edition
September 2020 Direct - Nothing. Was a Mario Direct instead
September 2021 Direct - Kirby and Forgotten Lands is the only brand new announcement plus first gameplay of Bayonetta 3.

So all of these are holdovers then?

hmm, I suppose so

So Twitter directs are the actual real directs because those usually have multiple minutes of gameplay footage over consecutive days/weeks. Why they are the best way to announce things (I genuinely believe this too).

Definitely excited to see how Nintendo's library on Switch continues to grow next year. I think the small peek into 2023 is already pretty promising for the year.

I'm only replying because this beautiful image deserves to be on a fresh page

I think you're right, honestly. September Directs are only "holdover" in the sense that they've consistently been a holdover for February lol

I think we'll be seeing a lot more Twitter news, Youtube uploads, and game specific Directs going forward. If you go back and watch some older Directs of the Switch era, good portions of those were spent going into detail about specific games. September 2017 had big segments for Xenoblade 2 and Mario Odyssey. I remember the February 2019 Direct having a big section for Fire Emblem Three Houses. I feel like those are becoming their own Directs. Nintendo could have spent several minutes going over Bayonetta 3 but they just said watch the new trailer posted on Youtube. We of course had Xenoblade 3 and Splatoon 3 Directs this year. General Directs going forward will be used as quick looks at the many things coming out and then you'll get more details from other sources like Twitter or Youtube.

Makes a lot of sense with the sheer number of releases from third parties they probably want to highlight. Not like the old Wii U days where Yoshi’s Wooly World gets a 5 minute spotlight on how Ike of the coordinators came up with the yarn yoshi amiibo idea (although maybe they should do more stuff like this).

I think at this point I'll just emulate Wind Waker for a replay and Twilight Princess for a first-time full playthrough. We don't even know that those ports are on the way anymore, and I'm looking to run through all of the mainline titles from ALttP through TP before TotK.

There's a really good stretch of time between FE Engage on January 20th and Kirby on February 24th for Nintendo to host a Direct. That'd give them time to solidify their first half titles and promote Zelda.
Seems likely to me. I would be willing to bet we'll get a Fire Emblem: Engage Direct just after the holidays, and then a General Direct 2-3 weeks after that game launches. It lines up really well.

There's no way that Nintendo waits until after the holidays. That would only leave a two week Direct to release period. We'll see Fire Emblem again in early December.

It might be cutting it a bit close, but they've been doing game-specific Directs roughly one month or so before launch, which puts it just before Christmas so I figured they'd wait until after. Do they ever do Directs in December that aren't Indies? I don't remember any, so I just kind of assumed it was off-limits.

I'm not saying it'll be the next time we see the game, surely they'll do more marketing before that.

2022 has less games than previous years but that’s mostly because there were no remasters or ports this year.

Its comforting to think that we carry a part of our parents on (physically and mentally) so even if they re gone a part of them lives on with us.

Random small rant. It's always been bad among the Nintendo community online but I feel like this last direct has brought an increased amount of stupidity and anger to a level that just baffles me. I'm seeing a lot of arguments that just makes absolutely no sense at all to a point it gives me a headache. I question if they even like Nintendo or Japanese games because they're comments sure make it hard to tell.

This gen for Nintendo feels like the gen of "2's" meaning a game and its sequel or follow up both on the same console

  • Octopath
  • Splatoon
  • Legend of Zelda
  • Bowserrs fury and Odyssey
  • Traditional Pokemon

Yeah these are more or less exceptions but a man can dream. Just waiting for the 2nd Metroid game to hit, and Tomodachi Life(similar vein to Animal Crossing).

I think there's an actual reason for this, and it's because Nintendo's development teams are internally structured to mostly focus on one IP. This led to the Splatoon team doing 3 instead of like, idk, putting them on a second Kid Icarus revival or some shit.

NGL, it's gonna feel really nice having a BOTW2 (or ToTK) release date to look forward to after Pokemon this year. Normally we don't get release dates this early. It makes it feel like it's just around the corner instead of some vague date.

But this isn't true? The Splatoon team is also the Animal Crossing team, the 2D Mario team is also the Pikmin team, NLG made both Luigi's Mansion and Mario Strikers, the Ring Fit team made Switch Sports, the Mario Kart team made ARMS, etc. If anything the Nintendo teams are a lot more flexible than Microsoft and Sony.

y'know I think it's pretty funny that @Skittzo and I were both right about the Zelda situation

I was right that Zelda was more than half a year out and he was right that we weren't getting the ports anyway

I probably should have said like, two IP. I'd be very surprised if the Splatoon team got put on anything other than Splatoon/AC duties, and because they're always working that pretty much guarantees we'll be getting one of the two every few years, barring major shakeups.

it may surprise you that the Splatoon team is 100% not the Animal Crossing team

and unless Pikmin 3 was made in less than a year it was not made by the Mario team

WARNING

I will rant a bit now, because I am bit frustrated about the online aspect of Splatoon and it absolutely sucks.

Splatoon is one of the most unique and cool games in the industry today, and it's multiplayer at it's core is just a beauty. Turf War is the best thing to happen to shooters in the last decade at the very least - It feels like playing an arena shooter with a unique twist. It's so frikkin great, still feels as fresh (sorry, not sorry) as it did with Splatoon 1.

However, I just cant with the online. It absolutely takes the fun out of because of the infrastructure of Nintendos online.
Roughly 20% of all my games are dropped because someone in the game got disconnected, mostly others but on occasion me as well - which is something that never happens in any other game. Ever. How can this happen? I dont get it..

On the other side of the spectrum there's Monster Hunter Rise - it's a game I have played over 100+ hours on between MHR and Sunbreak and me and my friends who have played equally as much or even more has a grand total of 0 disconnects since it launched. It just works, fast, lag free and no problems.

I'm going to wait another week or so to see if Splatoon gets better when the load has decreased a bit, but right now I dont think I have ever been as dissapointed with a game I bought on Switch.

/end rant

No, that's fair. Disconnects are pretty frustrating to deal with and that's because the game uses P2P, if I remember correctly. If it had dedicated servers, it'd be a massive improvement and something I can only hope that they do on the Switch 2 or whatever it'll be called. I still have a great time with it but, yeah, this is a pretty notable blemish on an otherwise great game

My favorite moment was listening to John die a little bit when I told him Forever Entertainment was the developer of the Front Mission Remake.

Poor John, totally unprepared. Kinda similar reaction when I learned about their involvement. lol

Forever Entertainment seems like a development house that takes on way too ambitious projects for their capabilities. The Panzer Dragoon Remake is currently in a pretty good state, but it took quite a lot of time to get there. Also: too much projects.

To be fair, Forever Entertainment is also a publisher, not all of those games are being developed internally. It's true though, Panzer Dragoon wasn't great at launch, I should probably redownload it and see what it looks like today.

It doesn't necessarily replace the SEGA Saturn original, but if you have no nostalgia for that game then the current builds of the game can be seen as the way to go. Also looking forward picking it up physically when Microids are making it available (likely when Panzer Draggon II Zwei remake is done).

I want to play something cute and chill, i'm considering Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Pikmin 3.

What do i do famiboards?

You cannot go wrong with either, though I am a bit more biased towards my current favorite game of 2022; Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Still baffled at Octopath 2 not being on Xbox...
S-E's MO for (almost) everything not AAA is NSW/PC/PS, so not really surprising, I'd say. Xbox will have to foot the bill yet again, and they've kinda got to blame themselves, at least to an extent.

They never did a game specific direct for Fire Emblem:Three Houses so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just trailer drops on Twitter leading up to release

Trailer is coming along better than I expected actually. Found some old music a friend made for me for another game that's working well.

That feeling when you wake up and see a Twitter notification that Guilty Gear is back on Xbox.

Also the combo of jrpg, dungeon crawler and third person shooter is a cool one(to the point where your stat point distribution effects what guns you can use)

I saw someone post that Age of Hyrule was announced on Twitter on 9/8 and released in November...hope for something else this fall via Twitter announce? Maybe? Please???

I just read the news about the Overwatch 2 battlepass. Playing game is a fucking job now. No way I would be able to grind that out in just 9 weeks.

I honestly wonder if Microsofts strategy (paying for ports) will hurt them in the long run even if it helps them on the short run. Like if I was the publisher in this case I wouldn't develop anything for Xbox and would instead wait for Microsoft to send me money for an Xbox port plus being on game pass. Then the next game won't be on Xbox either because I'll be holding out for more money to do a port. I just wonder if this will encourage publishers to wait and hold off for Microsoft to pay them to put games on Xbox.
