HOLY SHIT
something something anti-consumer

Remember when games used to release and they were, like, done?
Imagine buying a game with only the promise that it'll be finished someday with content you're looking forward to and then after you buy it the company is just like "lol nevermind we ain't doing the rest thx for the money tho"

See this is why I fucking hate video games, because they appeal to the corporate fantasy.

Gotta be honest, if implemented properly (lol), an XP system that debuts in November for Infinite will satisfy me in many ways.

There's this picture that's like

Games before:
100% game

Games today:
50% game
5% day one patch
5% pre-order bonus
20% DLC
10% microtransactions
10% land purchaseable via NFT

Don't forget the percentage of completed, on-disc content that's locked behind a paywall and masked as "DLC."
*side-eyes Capcom*

Okay what about a non-videogame example, because it's so heavily expected and accepted in this industry now... So like imagine buying a car that is technically fully-equipped but has actual physicaly-installed features electronically disabled and unlockable with microtransactions or subscriptions. Batshit, right?

OH WAIT

I'm learning that it pays off in the long run to keep code as simple as humanly possible every step of that way. That way if your need to add something later on it takes minimal effort.

Also, I think some games fit perfectly into the whole update and DLC and season thing and could only really exist the way they do because we have that technology ( Fortnite for example). I also obv like getting more stuff in games I like, e.g. Smash characters. But damn I also kind of wish the ideal of a game just having all that shit from the beginning and not having to worry about updates. Obv bug fixes especially are great but man even Indie games get updated for years sometimes and it just makes me not want to play some until I know there won't be more stuff, which again could be years.

But at the end of the day mario kart woosh, mario go jump, animal crossing cute mamelamamlemala talk, so I can't complain

The sicko part of me wants to peer into an alternate timeline and see the version of Halo Infinite that was supposed to release in 2020.

Is this related to your odd dream where you were beaten up by- I can only assume- Schmidt?
It was Winston actually but no, just been dealing with a lot of uncomfortable crap from third parties. Trying to move out of an automotive shop is hard. 😅

and then on top of that there's this weird creeping feeling about whether or not the place I'm trying to move to is even where I'd wanna be, after spending nearly a decade dreaming of it, because of how drastically the country is changing and now having to consider whether I'd even be safe and comfortable in that place, with the only thing I really know for sure is that I don't feel safe and comfortable here.

What's your favorite Metal Gear Solid music?

I mostly just like the standard level music tracks from MGS1. Hangar, Nuclear Warhead, Blast Furnace etc. Eerie choirs, ambient, lots of reverb, low piano notes... mmmm!

Potential hot take: Halloween is the new Christmas in terms of calendar creep and might actually be even more egregious. Halloween stuff is already up in full force at local stores in my area. It’s going to be all Halloween all September and October. Christmas at least gets buffered by Thanksgiving and New Years.

On one hand: Yes, this is true, sometimes starts even in August.

On the other hand: This is awesome

All I can say is I'm sorry you're dealing with stress and crap and also this

Is this the longest we've gone without a Rayman 2 port on a new console?
I believe so. With all the mascot like characters making comebacks like Crash, Spyro, Kao, Pacman, Klonoa, etc. it's a shame Rayman hasn't gotten at least a remaster or a collection of some sort. 😕

Great video to play in the background for random motivation

In recent years, shops here have given up on trying to make Halloween happen. As a consequence of this, all the back to school aisles have turned into Christmas aisles overnight. September is Christmas shopping time now.

Daily update because I'm walking my dog and have little else to do on these long walks:

I managed to implement an "illusory copy" ability which creates a duplicate of the player and has a chance at drawing enemy attention away from the player. Now, you might imagine this being difficult for a first person game where the "player" comprises 4 party members only really visually represented with 2D portraits. But I managed to put a cool "static"-like skin on the default UE4 mannequin to make it look neat and somewhat illusory. I only wish I could've made it translucent also but I'll let future skittzo handle that one.

Anyway, the point is in so doing I had to modify the enemy code to be able to attack someone other than the player which was way easier than I expected since my base code was relatively simple. Now this works like a charm PLUS I've laid the groundwork for other abilities where the enemy targets someone else, like confusion or friendly summons. Not bad for an hour or so of work.
