StarTopic Nintendo First Party Software Development |ST| Nintendo Party Superstars

They really need to expand at this point. Unless the owners don't want it to expand.
The only reason to expand would be to either provide more long term support for their sports titles or create a sports mix that needs multiple teams.

Either way I see Nintendo as being more then happy with Camelot compared to AD. I can only see Nintendo being hesitant on them being a studio to bring back GS, if they even want too, and the GS ip not being up to snuff.

Don't forget Nintendo partners with all these outside companies. They probably have Camelot design the game and courses while Nintendo themselves make all characters and the trillions of animations that go along with it.

I still think Camelot would be able to simply remake GS1&2. I don't think they will, I think they're going to be at the Mario sports cycle until and unless they either expand or shut down, but I think they could.

Though as it stands now I agree with Emily that it's probably going to have to be Nintendo finding someone else to work on GS. I wish they would, already.

I thought it was already common knowledge that Camelot was an incredibly tiny studio, and that the HD titles were them punching above their weight. Honestly I find it incredibly impressive they can pull that off. It also shows you don't always need massive studio head counts. Sometimes a smaller team streamlines operations.

Camelot doing better then NLG with their sport titles at least.

Granted. If golden sun were to comeback. They will need a support team to co-develope. Or give it to someone else. But I think if it returns. It’ll be a remake of the original 2

I believe Emily mentioned that Nintendo still has faith in Golden Sun and might want to hire other studios to work on the property just like they did with Advance Wars and Wayforward.

Their faith in Camelot is more in doubt now.
Camelot still holds have the rights to the game. so things will have to be ran by them as well

Some Sales context on Mario Sports x Mario RPG

yZS3UmH_d.webp

Blue = Golf ; Yellow = Tennis; Green = Strikers; Orange = Baseball; Grey = Other
Titles marked with * lack official sales numbers

Blue = Paper Mario ; Yellow = Mario & Luigi

Yikes that Color Splash cratering. The Wii U really was a graveyard for IPs in its later years.

Some 2015 and 2016 Wii U games that sold under a million, sometimes even less than half a million:

Xenoblade Chronicles X
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Tokyo Mirage Sessions
Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival
Paper Mario Color Splash
Star Fox Zero

Considering Mario Kart 8 is the best selling Wii U game at over 8 million, and there were a handful of 5-ish million sellers and then a sharp drop off from there, it really shows that some franchises shouldn't be judged by Wii U sales, when the system was just not popular regardless of game quality. Glad many of them found new life on Switch via ports or sequels.

What other Mario sports games could they be making?

What other Mario sports games could they be making?
My faith in them making a GS is so low that even if the next piece of hardware is an upgrade of the current one and thus doesn't necessitate the next round of Tennis and Golf, I'd see them trying a new sport over returning to the IP.

They may also try something small apart from Nintendo like Good-Feel, Game Freak and HAL do from time to time.

I would love to be wrong, though.

I am not sure they are working on another sports title. The others were made by Namco and Square, Baseball and Basketball respectively. Any other sport is not as popular as tennis, golf and soccer/futbol.

Why not light a large pile of money on fire while they're at it?
I don't think Golden Sun would be exempt from the Switch effect, especially since the system has such a viable ecosystem for RPGs, wherein even new IPs can break past the million mark, which GS has also done in the past, more than once.

Did better than Advance Wars ever did.

Dang. Isn't that sport included in the Sonic & Mario Olympic games?
Yes but there was no S&M Winter Olympics for unknown reasons this year (in 2018 it was because Ubisoft had exclusive license).

Why not light a large pile of money on fire while they're at it?
Horse game is exactly that right now for Nintendo lol, also Gust games are on a budget always the most successful ones sell 500k ish Nintendo can give them a higher budget than usual and still break even if they dont sell even one million.

I'm not convinced that creating a massive, fully 3D Golden Sun game would be worth the cost at all.

They should release the horse game for free on the eShop and give anyone who downloads it a $60 USD credit for their account

Golden Sun is an odd one for me. I think Nintendo would be willing to find a partner for Camelot to bring the series back, probably through a remake, now that Tennis and Golf are out.

But I'm also not sure another RPG would be a priority. Fire Emblem and Xenoblade are growing, and the one genre Nintendo can count on for third party is the JRPG. The flip side to that is that there definitely is a market to sell Golden Sun to.

I can definitely see Nintendo remaking the first 2 Golden Sun games regardless of how Fire and Xenoblade are doing. It would take someone to bring it to them.

Not sure if Camelot can do it alone. Maybe they can or maybe they need another dev to help.

Yakuman Tenpai
Hmm... it's true that Yakuman DS had a Mario theme, but I think fans of the series would rather see the return of the iconic Yakuman cast: Yakuman, Yakumam, Yakumiss, Dr. Yaku, Yakuinfant and Evil Yakuman.

Golden Sun should be Nintendo's classic Turn-Based JRPG franchise
If only Nintendo had a turn-based JRPG franchise. Not just the biggest JRPG franchise, not just the biggest video game franchise, but the highest-grossing media property in the world...

Pokemon is a thing on its own.

(And to be honest, I find Golden Sun more compelling).

Golden Sun should be Nintendo's classic Turn-Based JRPG franchise, they should market it that way. Hopefully Emily's comments about it materialize into something.
Idk if they want to take the risk on a new one. Because now that’s a whole different ball game compared to remaking old games. Camelot can’t do it. They would need to find someone else and hope it sells well enough

Are there any current 2D RPG that Nintendo owns? Nothing comes to mind. I feel like Golden Sun perfectly fills that niche. Not everything needs to transition to 3D.
They use Team Asano games that they publish for that purpose, but they dont own any active 2D RPG series.

A 2D, sprite based remake of the first two Golden Sun games seems reasonable. I don't think it would be nearly as expensive as a fully 3D RPG.

You've added a few of adjectives that weren't present in the original post which would indeed inflate the costs.

So you would want Gust to develop a small scale, 2D Golden Sun?

Nintendo has no issues financing 3D RPGs that are not expected to sell more than 1M (Astral Chain), sales are not the problem when it comes to Golden Sun, lack of a trusted dev team is.

This thread's become so confusing. Gust should make Golden Sun and Astral Chain is an RPG???

I'm gonna go eat pizza and watch Stranger Things.

I feel like the logical transition for Golden Sun should be 3D though. The original GBA games had a style that resembled 3D graphics and Dark Dawn went even further with that. A sequel that had a big enough world to explore (not Xenoblade big but at least Dragon Quest big) should be ideal.

Not like I expect remakes of the first two games to be full 3D. If anything the safest thing for them is to have a Link's Awakening remake approach.

From previous conversations one of the brothers mentioned wanting to return to the series and only needed to see that there is demand.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. Astral Chain and Golden Sun are different types of business moves.

As Musterspo said AC isn’t an RPG

So you would want Gust to develop a small scale, 2D Golden Sun?
If those are the first steps to gauge the viability of the series, then sure. Well not the 2D part, but the rest.

Why would you tap on modern Gust's shoulder to make a top-down 2D game?
Because it's clearly not something that would require the entire studio to accomplish, and yet it's a dev that is familiar with RPGs, has multiple teams making smaller-budget games, and now with some Nintendo collaboration behind them. I'm not saying it would have to be Gust, like they're the only ones capable or the obvious choice.

But they're also not going to be the most expensive studio to work with, but they have small capable teams, which is probably what Nintendo would want with an unsure property. It's not going to be 2D though obviously, I didn't say that. It's just not going to be some massive open world either.

Two; Tomato Adventure by Alpha Dream (more or less became Mario & Luigi right after), and Magical Vacation by Brownie Brown (it got a sequel on DS called Magical Starsign).

Seemingly much of the AD leads are now at Arzest (fitting as they helped out on M&L Bowser's Inside Story 3D), they could do a new Mario & Luigi or actually try to maybe give Tomato Adventure a second wind, and the core team from Brownie Brown left to form Brownies. Let them remake Magical Vacation, that never got localized either for some bizarre reason.

And Gust for Golden Sun works because they're at KT who's been a huge asset for Nintendo, and is by far the most qualified there to do so (if Nintendo wanted KT for it), I mean maybe they could ask Matrix Software or hell actually convince Tri-Ace to have a crack, I mean despite never making their own Switch games, Nintendo/Monolith have them on speed dial for each Xenoblade game on Switch it seems. Better than another mediocre Star Ocean.

Yeah, that statement must be a decade old by now, though. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly better late than never, but at this point the only way I'll believe in Camelot making a GS is if I see it. On the other hand, these days I can more readily believe some other dev would be handed the reins to at least try a remake.

Though yeah, now we might be in a phase where Camelot has the time to make something that isn't Golf or Tennis. It will be interesting to see what they do.

This is what’s great about the Switch. When you run through the usual games you develop for a system, you can now do something new. In the past you make your Mario Golf and/odd Mario Tennis for console and then for handheld.

This is a good situation to be in on Switch.

My guess is Nintendo gets WayForward to remake Golden Sun 1 and 2 the same way they did Advance Wars, and Camelot can help.

Either that or Nintendo gets Camelot to do a new Mario Sports Mix with Camelot making one or two minigames having other support studios like 1-Up or Bandai Namco do other games for the same package.

This did start about Gust, but I guess now it's not for one reason or another. But surely there are cheaper ways to gauge the viability of a niche series like Golden Sun. Perhaps the HD-2D approach could work nicely; not from Gust of course, who I see as just being the latest company in the "third party company should make dead Nintendo series" formula.

Didn't they say current?

Wayforward isn't a bad idea at all! A small scale remake like what Advance Wars is getting would be a good fit.
