For some reason the one that came mind was the April 1st 2015 show. The moment when the finally revealed Fire Emblem x SMT and it was a J-Pop themed smt style RPG was so wild to me.

Non specific action figure!

Why haven’t we seen this hunk of plastic again? Bring back miiverse Nintendo.

This is not a real entry, just wanted any excuse to post this ridiculous miiverse ad

E3 2019 Direct's "The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development" announcement. It's the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time (tied for my #1 spot in fact) so you bet it was meaningful to me. I also love the fact that it was so secret. I remember reading that it was a surprise to those who had previewed the presentation before it aired.

Iwata fighting Reggie in the E3 2014 Direct. I loved goofy Iwata moments like that. Legendary meme material

You know what, I'm gonna go against your rules a little bit and talk about the Switch Presentation 2017 instead.

I ended up successfully convincing my best friend to hop on a video call and see what Nintendo had planned to reveal for the Switch. That night was just banger after banger, but one moment really sticks out in my head.

Mario Odyssey's reveal. Seeing the little teasers of Donkey Kong references in the opening shot, seeing a realistic looking city, I had no idea what to expect. Then Mario jumped out of the god damn hole. We both collectively lost our shit because "holy shit, an open world 3D Mario!". We were just amazed the entire time the trailer went on, seeing all the different areas. We honestly thought it was Galaxy 3 or some shit, but damn am I nostalgic for 2017. Other highlights were the Splatoon 2 reveal (I love Splatoon), and of course the absolute banger that was the Breath of the Wild trailer ending with it coming out the same day as the Switch. Total mindfuck. Sonic Mania being announced for Switch right afterwards was icing on the cake.

There are three that stand out to me. The first was the January 2013 Direct, which, despite being a banger from front to back the likes of which are still memorable almost ten years later... it didn't make me all that happier about the Wii U, lol.

A more recent moment would be Banjo in Smash / BotW2 back-to-back. Killer finale.

And then in terms of pure laughing through the entire announcement, the Mario movie cast reveal. What a gong show.

Oh, and honorable mentions for conference moments, both the Wii Music catastrophe which I watched through my fingers (shout out Ravi Drums), and also a few years later, Reggie proclaiming that he felt like a purple Pikmin. Good shit.

The internet's memory is just soo bad. I remember when Luigi's Mansion 3 got announced and yes it was rough but people literally thought it was the 3ds lm games lmao.

Xenoblade Definitive Edition's announcement at the end of the September 2019 direct. After about 35 minutes of a nothing burger presentation they announced the game I was most excited to play, probably EVER. I played Shulk in Smash Bros. for Wii U and really wanted to play his game, to get to know the character. At the time I really wanted to get the game but couldn't find a physical copy (I wasn't even aware of the eShop digital version when that launched, oops). I even got Xenoblade X because I just needed to play a Xenoblade game. Years passed and I was about to give up and even started watching Chuggaaconroy's series, I think I watched 1 episode or 2 before the direct so just listening to the title screen music being in the final announced filled me with unfiltered happiness and hype.

Little did I know General Directs would vanish after that, lol.

The Prime 4 tease, Dread reveal, and AW Re-Boot Camp reveal.

Seriously, when I say my taste in Nintendo is niche as hell, I mean it. The Switch has only now started getting amazing for me personally.

I do enjoy other Nintendo games (usually a few standout titles in each IP, like Thousand Year Door) but Metroid is pretty much the only of their IPs that can get me HYPED.

Well, that and Advance Wars now obviously, but I had written that series off as dead for so long that I had forgotten how much I loved it until that reveal made me light up like a Christmas tree.

Excellent submissions everyone! I’d been reading as they came in, and it was a big tossup. I had fun reading all your favourite moments!

🥉 Let me know what you want me to write about @1UP inc. and I’ll write four paragraphs on it! I chose this answer because I like how you mentioned how it affected you emotionally. It’s cool to hear how a game ended in tears because it was so special to you.
Easily March 8th, 2018, when Luigi's Mansion Remake was announced for the 3DS. The GameCube game was the very first game I ever played and seeing it remade in 3D on my favorite system ever was just so damn hype. It is my favorite game of all time. Cried for hours, and even missed some other hype stuff due to the shock still being there 😅

🥈 Congrats to @Mr_No_U on second place! I picked this because of the cool fact you included, which was the original intent behind these Direct quizzes: to spread cool facts about Directs! Let me know your topic, and six paragraphs will be lovingly written!

🥇 And the series wraps up on @ezidro3 ’s submission. While not technically a Direct, you put in something really meaningful to you and explained your thought process. The detail here was really nice and scored you a W! Let me know what you’d like me to write about, and I’ll write ten paragraphs about it.

I want mine to be a 10 paragraph dissertation on why Sonic Frontiers' marketing has been brilliant and innovative so far. 🙃

I need to stop checking this place every now and then, but regardless of what kind of Direct is is, I am very hyped! 😀

Plus I got Xenoblade 3 next month, which will demolish my entire summer and year. My most hyped game!

I want mine to be a 10 paragraph dissertation on why Sonic Frontiers' marketing has been brilliant and innovative so far. 🙃
Why do we have to abuse @switchum in this thread? He’s just trying to have fun and we make him shit on one of his favorite games, praise amiibo festival (I fully accept responsibility), and now this! Let’s hope @Derachi never wins one of these or else the Yakuza fan fiction with come out…

I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but the January 2013 Direct gets worse with every rewatch. Like a third of it is OS updates and name dropping “the next title in the ____ series”.
@WhyS you gonna just stand there and take this January slander?

This.. Januslander??

It was 100% a panic Direct because the WiiU was flopping hard.

There’s nothing cooler than a game that shows off naught but its highs. And I cannot think of a better example of this than the marketing campaign for SEGA’s Sonic Frontiers.

The moment I laid eyes upon the game, I knew I would be in for a treat. Only SEGA could think of creating an open world, nay, an open ZONE game that features Sonic’s classic railways and obstacle systems. The ways that the railings appear in the sky above the overworld is breathtaking, and keeps the game true to the Sonic tone.

People have made the argument that “Sonic should have some momentum in his movement while traversing hills.” To which I say, if you think you can do better than the indie devs over at SEGA, be my guest and develop a “momentum”-based open-zone Sonic game yourself. That’s right, I didn’t think you’d have much to say about THAT.

Plus, SEGA is demonstrating through the gameplay that Sonic is above the laws of physics. He need not listen to Isaac Newton, for he is a divine hedgehog. The fact that people are not picking up on this is simply disappointing. Have the “fans” forgotten the power of Sonic? Or are they simply looking for something stupid to complain about?

Another foolish argument I’ve heard oft repeated: “the person playing the game in the first gameplay demo is too slow and boring in their gameplay style.” Um, I don’t mean to call you dumb, but you are acting EXTREMELY idiotic. SEGA is demonstrating the different gameplay styles that Sonic Frontiers allows for: if you want to take it slow and take in the world, that’s fine. If you’d rather zip through to the end, that’s fine too! SEGA has created a revolutionary concept, which has never been done before in a video game, where there is no “wrong” way to play the game. And nothing encapsulates this better than the difference in gameplay videos’ styles of play.

The indie devs at SEGA are giving the small news reporter site IGN a chance to show off the content, which is why IGN has had the gracious opportunity to show off all the footage. It’s so kind of SEGA to allow such a small, relatively unheard of company to display such a beautiful, vast game; and it speaks to the hearts of the developers.

People are upset that SEGA has commented that they won’t be changing the game based off fan feedback. This is to keep the game pure to its developers’ original intent, and not have it skewed by stupid fans that have no idea how to develop a game. Keep going, SEGA, and show the world what YOU are made of, not the fans.

Can we talk about that Sonic Central? ooooooohhhhhhhhh it sends shivers down my spine. The tiny amount of footage we received was just enough to give me a taste, leaving me wanting more. The marketing strategy here is, “let’s get fans excited and then they’ll crave more information!” And it worked beautifully.

In conclusion, Sonic Frontiers has had the greatest marketing campaign known to man. I’ve never seen a game marketed as well as this one, in such a way that shows off the intent of the developers, the variety of gameplay styles, and the small teasers leaving us BEGGING for more.

I leave you with a quote from Lenjamin Q. Davis, my game design professor from University: “it is not what the fans desire what matters. Fuck them all. Make what’s in your heart, and you shall succeed. And if you don’t, your fans are clearly plain fools.”

Night, fami! I'll see you bright and early at 9am ET, then 10am ET, then I'll actually have to focus on work. But as far as I'm concerned, if we don't get an announcement at either of those times tomorrow, it's a Mini instead of a Partner :)

Feels like going to bed as a kid right after you see the first bits of snow falling from the sky.

Come on Nintendo! Snow day!

Yay! Write 6 paragraphs about your grandpa and gaming, please.
Ok. I’ll actually take this one seriously, lmao. Here’s the real story of my grandfather’s newfound love of gaming. My grandpa was never really into technology. He thought “a phone should just be used as a phone”, and never thought it should do anything extra. But when I noticed how he got into the news, weather, time, Solitaire on the family computer; all from different machines … I knew something could be done. So I talked my grandma into getting him an iPad.

He fell in love with his new tablet. To this day, he plays virtual golf every morning while he drinks coffee, with strangers from around the world. He uses a chat feature to message the strangers (sound familiar?) and forms friendships. I noticed that he used his iPad primarily for gaming, and I wondered… is there any further I could take this? So I decided to get him a Switch Lite for his birthday in March 2021, along with Zelda BotW.

I had let him try it on my Switch before, but he was frustrated with the controls and how to maneuver Link and the camera. He forgot the buttons, pressed the wrong ones, and so on. But I felt there was something special there, so I invested in the turquoise Switch Lite. At first, he was resistant. He didn’t use it often, but every few days I’d notice him playing on it. Then, something clicked in his head, and he was on it 24/7. He’d play from 11 AM to 2 AM the next day. He found so much enjoyment in it, and in sharing it with me.

So I teamed up with my family to buy him a full Switch. Again, he was resistant at first, claiming he only wanted to play in his hands so that he “didn’t have the pressure of people watching him”. But we continued insisting, and now he REFUSES to even consider playing in his hands. He now rocks a Pro Controller and plays on the TV for hours a day. Since he got his Lite in March 2021, he’s put in about 975 hours. That’s about 2.15 hours every day since then!

We noticed that his gaming was very humourous. He’d swear and curse and flip out. “STOP CROUCHING!!,” he’d scream at Link, as if he could hear my grandfather on the other side of the TV screen. So my mom and I decided to take it one step further… we bought some streaming equipment for him. We thought he’d resist (this is the same guy who didn’t want a full Switch so that people couldn’t watch him!) but he was genuinely excited!

And now here we are, and my 75-year-old grandpa is sharing his love of gaming with you all. He’s taking some time to acquaint himself with his viewers, and is learning to become more talkative and receptive. I sit behind the computer, reading the chat to him and running the stream from a PC, and all he needs to do is play and talk. It’s truly an experience that I am so grateful I get to share with him, and that I will never forget.

If you want to catch a stream, follow him @ twitch.tv/calamitygrandpa . We stream every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 5 PM ET! I hope to see you there.

Tbh this is how pokemon fans sound

I really try to stay away from Pokemon negativity because it gets so repetitive but I got to the concert part of my Sword playthrough and good lord.

(I never beat the game so I'm trying to get through it before the new ones later this year.)
